Having long since shed their image as hip-hop's clown princes, the Beastie Boys now bring what feels like their emeritus recording, a celebratory instrumental memoir of all of the influences (except punk) that brought them to their secure place among hip-hop's fickle elite. The party opens with the aptly titled "B for My Name," its plodding bounce staking claim to the mid-tempo path the album treads almost throughout. "14th St. Break" picks up the pace, especially in the auxiliary percussion breakdown, complete with rally whistle. Then, beginning with "Suco de Tangerina," the album drops into a deep groove cut from dub- and dancehall-tinged ostinati that carry through a full third of its tracks. Among these, "The Gala Event" suffers from a lack of developmental motion that characterizes many of these tracks, but highlights still abound. "Off the Grid," for example, departs from the otherwise unbreakable chill and rips the proceedings wide open, blooming again and again in a series of pulsing riffs that celebrate the very institution of the instrumental groove. More than 20 years since Licensed to Ill took a long, irreverent piss into the mainstream, it seems you can still fight for your right to party. --Jason Kirk

The Mix-Up is Beastie Boys' first-ever full album of all-new instrumental material. The follow-up to 2004's To The 5 Boroughs, The Mix-Up features Diamond, Horovitz and Yauch back on drums, guitar and bass, with able assistance from Keyboard Money Mark and percussionist Alfredo Ortiz, on 12 brand new wordless, sample-less, scratchless originals. Sure to please fans of the instrumental cuts from Check Your Head and Ill Communication and the cult hit compilation album made up largely of those tracks, The In Sound From Way Out!, The Mix-Up finds NYC's favorite sons drawing on one of their arsenal's primary strengths and pushing it into bold new directions.

I would say if you are new to the band you might find this appealing. For me it was not the same as past musical experiences I had in listening to albums of the past, including several that came after the famous "Licensed to Ill" which I have heard is one of Capitol Records all-time best selling albums. This CD left me frustrated as I did not feel there was very much creativity at all. As they say; "to each his own" but I personally felt this CD was a letdown.

1 out of 5 stars Poor.......2007-07-28

Picked this up, was so excited, first song...all insturmental...i was like ya cool, i dig, then next song...no lyrics, all the way through the 12 tracks. very dissapointed, sure the mysic is good, but thats not what makes the beastie boys the beastie boys. if you are eager to listen then give the sample on amazon a quick listen, chances are that is all you will need

4 out of 5 stars Chill Background.......2007-07-27

The Beasties are always giving the people what they want. They may not know they want it but after you get it, you realize you needed it. This is one of those records. It's not anything ground-breaking but it is just what you'd expect form an all instrumental (that's right, no lyrics) record from them. This record is great to chill to or have on the background of any get-together. It takes you right back to the instrumental songs of Check Your Head and Ill Communication records but is totally all brand new music. Nothing here appears on their The In Sound From The Way Out Album but it is similar in it's construction. I enjoyed The Mix-Up and I hope you do too.

2 out of 5 stars Dreck.......2007-07-26

This ferkachte CD is barely worth the plastic it was printed on. How the Beastie Boys could have gone from the heights of Check Your Head and Ill Communication, and the ensuing instrumental mashup masterpiece The In Sound From Way Out, to this limp, soulless, grooveless piece of dreck is beyond me. Seriously, take it from one schmegege to another, you will not be kvelling when you listen to this.

4 out of 5 stars This isn't their first instrumental album.......2007-07-25

People keep comparing this to their hip-hop albums, but you can't compare it. It's a totally different type of music. I agree partially with an earlier review ; if you like MMW or Galactic(Stanton Moore) then this album might not measure up, but this funky acid jazz style is what MMW and S. Moore do best. It's not what the B.B. do best. I give them a ton of credit for going out of the box and doing other things. In 1996 the B.B. made an album called "The In Sound From Way Out". It was all instrumental and it was VERY good! When I first heard it, I didn't believe it was the B.B. So before you criticize, remember these are hip-hops artist who decided to actually pick-up instruments and play them. Not use synthesizers and samples. I think it's a really good cd. True, it doesn't measure up entirely to your MMW records, John Scofield, or Galactic, but it is a good addition to your funk collection.

Four-year career hiatuses followed by sprawling double-albums could spell trouble for a band of the Chili Peppers' stature: consider they'd originally recorded enough for three discs. The restless, trouble-plagued outfit that helped break alternative rock into the mainstream with a potent fusion of punk 'n' funk in the '80s finds itself two decades on almost completely devoid of the former's energetic abandon, while the latter's effusive rhythms are considerably subdued over the course of this two-hour, 28-track collection. It's not so much that the Peppers have lost their muscular, often uber-macho edge as they have willfully tamed it in service of mature reinvention here. The mellower, often introspective, if no less potent pop ethos that characterized the crossover hit "Under the Bridge" blossoms fully here on tracks like disc one's "Snow," "Wet Sand," and the jazz-cool of "Hey."

The title track, "Desecration Smile," and "She Looks To Me" finds them venturing further into laid back pop ballad territory, while the tricky rhythms of "Dani California," "Charlie," and "So Much I" eventually kick into familiar top gear on the pop-savvy "Tell Me Baby" and hip-hop seasoned "Storm in a Teacup." It's not that there's a paucity of musical adventure here ("If" and "Animal Bar" finds them wafting into Floydish neo-psychedelia while "Make You Feel Better" seems to channel no less than Joe Jackson) but that it's delivered with a subtlety--and dare we say it?--tasteful musical restraint that's a stark contrast to the band's early, overly overt nature. There's perhaps too much mid-tempo simmering and reflection going on; like most double-albums it could be focused into a much more compelling single disc. But that seems largely beside the Peppers' hooks-over-histrionics point here: an unlikely record to kick back to, and one that both challenges assumptions and eases the band into middle age with an oft languorous, if undeniably savory groove. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers calls the band's first new album in four years, Stadium Arcadium, the most-anticipated album of the spring, "the best thing that we've ever done…. There's this weird kind of sublime, subliminal undercurrent that is suggestive, in a spirited way, of our earliest records." Exuding all the passion, energy and funked-up rock that have made the Red Hot Chili Peppers one of the most popular bands in history, the 2-CD Stadium Arcadium, simply put, will knock your socks off.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars BUY IT!.......2007-07-21

I have been listening to this album consistently for almost a year in a half since it came out.

This is coming from someone who music typically runs a short half life.

If you are reading this about this album, and don't yet own it...then do yourself a favor and buy it!

The cynics of this album are the overly-cynical type that find a flaw in just about anything. Do not listen to (the very few) of them.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-07-13

I bought this because of the singles that have been released so far, but have really enjoyed the other songs. After listening to it 3 times, I really like most of the songs. Good, solid Chili Peppers.

5 out of 5 stars Snow..the hit from the soundtrack.......2007-07-11

Okay, I am going to review one song, and not the entire album (yeah, yeah. Go ahead with the negative votes). But please read on.

For the past two days I've been listening to one song, Snow, over and over. The cool thing is with iTunes repeat, it's the kind of song that just undulates into highs and lows, mellow and rapping and metal and back to mellow; like it never ends (and by the way, I DON'T do drugs anymore. Just want to clarify).

This is what the Chili Peppers represent to me. They have that definite sound that's been imitated ad-infinitum. But they started that sound (at least for white people) and added the heavy guitars to rapping found only in Run DMC's second hit, Rock Box back in the early 80s. Punk? Yeah. Well, that's just part of their story. Much more multicultural than that.

But what I want to say is, you know how there's that song that represents a certain time in your life? I call them life soundtrack songs. They're powerful and give you goose bumps, and you remember that time when you were, say, just walking down the street, and this beautiful serene rhythm took over from hearing that one song. Two years from now I'll try to recapiture this song's impact, but it will be second hand by then.

So, thank you Chili Peppers, for coming up with what I see as tPart II of that beautiful/desperate epic of pain and resurrection; Under the Bridge. That's when I knew you guys were incredible, and that you'd been there.

You know.

And that it made you better in the long run.

5 out of 5 stars Thank God it's a double CD.......2007-07-11

RHCP have been my favorite band for years. As you can imagine I was hungry for their new material. I bought this immediately after it came out and all I can say is WOW! This is, by far, their best work. THey show such a range of musical talent from balladry to hard rock to funk (often in just one song). Even thought it is a double CD set, they have left me craving for more. Let's just say, I have had a year to totally wear it out.

5 out of 5 stars Just good music..........2007-07-10

If you like music, looking for something new and inexpensive buy this album. I put both disc in my cars cd player and havent taken them out for months.

A rare case in which a band actually gets better with time, this California hard rock quintet seems to have finally grown into its skin on its fifth album. Casting off the dated slap-bass funk and pointless nu-metal angst of its early years (well, mostly), Light Grenades is not only a worthwhile follow-up to 2003's A Crow Left of the Murder--the expansive disc many fans consider Incubus's best--but shows improvements all around. Singer Brandon Boyd has learned to temper the words he plucks out of the thesaurus with genuine heartbreak, while the rest of the group proves it can do a lot more than offer up nonstop grooves. --Aidin Vaziri

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not their best effort.......2007-07-27

I'm starting to get the feeling that Brandon Boyd is only capable of writing deep, complex songs about relationships, love, and loss. When I think back to the albums before "Morning View," there are a handful that standout which aren't about said topics- "Make Yourself," "A Certain Shade of Green," "Pardon Me," Even Morning View had "Just a Phase." But it feels like most of the tracks that jump out on "Light Grenades" are about love, loss of love, etc.
And I guess I've always known that about Boyd. Most of the bands hit singles are about that stuff- (Drive, Stellar, Wish You Were Here, etc.) But I honestly feel like his songwriting has stalled. It feels at times that the music itself has become less complex, more formulaic than in the past. I realize the analogy isn't spot on, but it's starting the feel like the difference between Metallica's "And Justice For All" and The Black Album. At the time- it might have been just one album. Now that we have perspective on it, it was the first in a series of very different, less complex songs. I feel like that's where Incubus is headed.
Don't get me wrong. This is the one band left that I will buy a the album for without hearing a single track. But it's been two albums since I've been remotely satisfied.
I hope they go back to the kind of band they were before, less "poppy."

"Dig" is my favorite track on this album.

It also might be a coincidence, but maybe in a few years we'll find out that Alex Katunich's departure hurt more than they thought it would (with no offense to Ben Kenney's playing).

3 out of 5 stars Mixed results on 2006 offering........2007-07-17

The first half of this album is great. Exactly the sort of catchy songs that you'd expect from them. "A Kiss to Send Us Off" is a strong opening track, "Dig" explores the territory of previous hit "Drive", "Anna Molly" is the standout track on the album, with a clever play on words, and "Love Hurts" is an excellent ballad. There are a few more songs that I thought were pretty good, but the rest of the album seems like weak B-side material. Corny song names like "Oil & Water" and "Diamonds and Coal" don't help either.
I think Incubus is a great band, but they should have waited until they had a full album of above average songs before releasing it. As it stands, I give the first half a 4.5, and the second a 2.5. Check out the songs first before buying, and maybe you'll like the whole thing, what do I know? But I think most will agree that there are only 5 good songs on here.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS ALBUM!.......2007-06-24

I think this album is one of Incubus' best yet. There is not one song on this album that I dont like. If you like lyrics that have deep meaning and a sound that opens you up from the inside out through vocals and instrument, then this is for you.

For some reason Earth to Bella pt. 1 is getting a bad rep. I dont understand that at all. This song took me on a roller coaster ride the first time i listened to it and its one of my top 5 on the CD. My favorite song on the album is Oil and Water. You know, if you're reading these reviews and you're not sure whether or not to buy it, stop right now. Listen and judge the album for yourself. You wont be let down.

This is a different spin for Incubus and it was a good one. I have no complaints at all for this album. Buy it and enjoy the magic of INCUBUS.

A Kiss to send us off

5 out of 5 stars Great band getting even better.......2007-05-13

Know how some of your favorite bands seem to get a little less great over time, until eventually you stop picking up their weak albums? Well, Incubus has broken the mold because their newest album, "Light Grenades," is actually much stronger than the past two. While I would give "Morning View" a 4/5 and "Crow Left of the Murder" a 3/5, I give "Light Grenades" a 5/5 for sure. Every song on the record is a slam dunk, seriously. BUT if buy this CD thinking it's full of crunchy guitar riffs and expecting to rock out, you might want to preview the songs first. This is a melodious and beautiful rock album but it's nothing to mosh to.

5 out of 5 stars Incubus rule!.......2007-04-29

Aidin Vaziri - why are Amazon paying this opinionated bigot?

Just because Incubus are taking a turn towards your taste does not mean the earlier work was wrong or poor.

In fact they would not be around today and making music more to your liking if people like me hadn't bought and enjoyed their previous albums with the angst and slap bass you seem to abhor.

I think they were great and are great, but shy from dogmatic comments like those of Aidin Vaziri, Amazon review author. Slap bass and angst still have a place in music, it is not 'dated' as he said, and there is nothing bad about nu-metal. If you happen not to like it, then don't listen to it.

The irony is that there would be less angst if it wasn't for such intolerance in the world.

Taken literally, this album's title is sure to cause endless arguments. Nothing from Dirty Mind, not a trace of the early anthem "Controversy," no "Erotic City"--no non-LP cuts at all, save some edited single versions--and a cold shoulder to the criminally out-of-print Gold Experience. Damn. As a compendium of 17 key A-sides from 1979 to 1992, however, The Very Best of Prince is (ahem) a quick-'n'-dirty review of the days when the Artist was, in the estimation of R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, one of the weirdest musicians in the Top 10. Blessed with both creative cunning and the wish to reach every listener possible, Prince revitalized rock and soul modes from the sex-crazed ("Little Red Corvette") to the cryptically spiritual ("Purple Rain"). Often he blurred lines between attitudes as surely as he did musical ones; the New Testament image of "Thieves in the Temple" became in his hands a complaint about a stolen girlfriend. Though a fine party artifact, this disc is still likely to prove too scanty even for many casual Prince fans. --Rickey Wright

2 out of 5 stars Some good stuff, missing lots, HORRID sound quality.......2007-07-05

I'm not going to into track selection much. You can see the track selection yourself fairly easily. I will say all the songs on this album I enjoy.

However, the sound quality is as bad as it gets. It's easily the loudest album I own, and anything that was the chili peppers is flattened out as much as possible. Give It Away is a far, far cry from the original release quality.

Do yourself a favor, since RHCP have only released a few albums in the past 15 years, pick those up individually (you'll get 90% of this Greatest Of by picking up their last 3 releases). Then track down the ORIGINAL ISSUES of RHCP's early stuff, they used to care about sound quality and had some really great stuff back in the day. Just don't get fooled by the "Remastered" editions, they will have hacked sound quality just so it can sound as loud as modern releases.

Add 3121 to the mounting pile of evidence: Prince is the black Beck. He's a whole lot sexier, no doubt, but there's more to both musicians than image. All-out weirdness for one. Edginess for another. And a fine-tuned sense of how to combine the two to create some of the decade's most vital music for a third. Prince--looking ageless in videos for the first two singles, the controversy-courting "Black Sweat" and the sauna-steeped "Te Amo Corazon"--proves fearless as ever here, folding fat slabs of disco-funk into rock, heaping measured doses of hip-hop atop soul-tinted jazz supports, and slamming Latin rhythms against old-school R&B riffs. Nothing sounds as slinky-stylish-smart. And nobody delivers quite so deliciously, especially when what they're delivering is ultimately a madcap sonic mash. The usual hype surrounding a Prince release attended this one; over the long-term, expect a few standouts within a way worth-it set to emerge. They include the danceable "Love"; the gospel-lite falsetto feast "Satisfied"; and the summer-breezy "Beautiful, Loved & Blessed." --Tammy La Gorce

YES! the Prince I know and love is back!! This is a great CD! I need to run out and buy his new one now.. What a talented artist!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastically Funky.......2007-07-25

I absolutely love this album. More than a year after its release, I am still bumping to 3121. It is a splendid mix of funk and soul with enough rock to satiate the diverse musical palates that Prince's music attracts. There are so many standout songs on this album - some hit you like Bernard Hopkins jab right out the gate and others grow on you over time. My favorite tracks are the slinky Black Sweat, the romantic Te Amo Corazon with its beautiful string accompaniment, The Word - this song is just awesome, Get On the Boat - the bass and drums just do it for me on this one, the lovely ballad The Dance and the sexy ballad Incense and Candles, and Fury the solid rocker that I love to blast. All in all, you cannot go wrong with this one.

1 out of 5 stars Tammy La Gorce: Does Not Know What She's Talking About.......2007-07-24

I normally do not comment to other reviews, but Tammy La Grace's review was so bad and misguided that I was compelled. First. the fact that she calls prince a "black Beck." How insulting is that! Prince created several genre's of music before Beck was even out of grade school. Your comment that "All-out weirdness for one. Edginess for another. And a fine-tuned sense of how to combine the two to create some of the decade's most vital music for a third." Frankly, those statements are plain dumb and meaningless. Think about, "combining" weirdness and edginess makes prince a black beck. That's like saying Jimi Hendrix is the Black Jimmy Page because both where great guitarists and both pushed the boundaries of music--that's dumb. Again, your statement is insulting to the artist and fan base and you should reconsider your comparison.

5 out of 5 stars C'mon Do I REALLY need to Review this album?.......2007-07-04

c'mon do I REALLY need to review this album?? Prince is one of the rare artist who transcends time. Some artist made a name for themselves with covers of other peoples music and may have inspired people with a limited palate, but Prince has ALWAYS been doing his thing, NONSTOP! You know when you buy a Prince album, the only thing to expect is the unexpected. Do I really need to review this album? You're joking right? It's PRINCE for crying outloud. :0)

4 out of 5 stars Prince funkadelic album.......2007-06-29

I had bought this Prince album for my girlfriend, since she is a big Price fan. The only albums that I really love from Prince are "Purple Rain" and "1999" Know, I know that Prince had released some experimental albums, where he got more away from Rock/Funk and more into jazz, and those were OK. Some of his solo albums after Purple Rain, however, not so good. This is the best Prince release since Purple Rain. There are some great Funk songs on this album, and Prince seems like he is back with a vengence. There is some mild filler here, that makes it short from perfect, but still a great album. If you want Funk, this is the album to get.

Reunited with producer Rick Rubin and guitarist John Frusciante (both of whom were on board for the 1991's breakthrough Blood Sugar Sex Magik), the Chili Peppers waste no time in burying their last effort, the so-so One Hot Minute. Californication's kickoff cut, "Around the World," swaggers around the room, reacquainting itself with old fans and welcoming new ones. Fuzzy Hendrix vibes and popcorn bass lines still rule the roost, along with a heaping helping of disco magic and some unexpected twists. Ten years ago, Anthony Kiedis and company wouldn't have been comfortable doing revamped new wave ("Parallel Universe") or unpretentious ballads (the acoustic "Road Trippin'"), but such material fits Californication's extra-wide canvas. Except for a few meandering numbers that could have been excised, the Red Hot Chili Peppers succeed and regain their footing on the mountain of adrenalized funk. --Jason Josephes

5 out of 5 stars Chili Peppers takes it to a whole nother level again!.......2007-07-16

i've admired RHCP for a very long time. always considered them a HIGLY underrated band. they create such funky, original, alternative rock music. they just have a sound that no one has. this album is probably my fave from them. they've slowed it down a bit, with less funky stuff but it's still as good. i love Scar tissue. there's not much slow, sad, soul- serching songs (which this is) that can sound good. this does. i absolutely loved it when i first heard it. love the guitar hook. californication is another masterpiece with an amazing guitar sound. "all around the world" is an awesome album opener! it's rockin, funky; it just shows that there's no one doing music like the Peppers. that song is 100% quality. i also enjoyed "Right on time" very disco and funky. i also liked This velvet glove, get on top, and definitely Emmit remmus. almost all the songs sound good! kiedis' voice also soars on this album. as i said i love when artists evolve their sound and don't come with the same thing over and over (Beyonce). i'm so tried of fake artists with fake sounds. the peppers definitely moved to another level with this album but a few songs still had their old funk. too bad they are not recognized as much as they should be.

"Californication" is an absolute masterpiece! I have recently become a RHCP fan and have some of their CDS. I have to say that "Californication" is probably one of their best. It's very original. Even if you aren't a Red Hot Chili Peppers fan, you should at least give this album a listening to. If you do, i think you would be pleasantly surprised. It was worth every penny.

This CD is alright, but the Red Hot Chili Peppers have some CDs that are much better. It has some really good songs, but I don't like the rest.

Maybe this music by Prince & the Revolution will never quite sound as, well, revolutionary as it did in 1984 (and nothing else has ever sounded like the extraordinary cooing and fluttering of "When Doves Cry"), but it's a pop landmark in Prince's Artist-ic career. The hit movie was really just a big-screen showcase for Prince to perform these songs (some of them in tear-the-roof-off "live" versions set in a Minneapolis club). I don't know why that warped sermonette introduces "Let's Go Crazy" (one thing you've got to love about Prince: he's always been weird), but somehow I'm glad it's there. Other highlights include the sexual scorcher "Darling Nikki" (with its crazy backwards coda) and that anthemic title tune. Don't you miss Wendy and Lisa, too? --Jim Emerson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Funk-rock-jazz classic! .......2007-06-27

This was, of course, Prince's breakthrough album, packed with huge hits: two #1's ("When Doves Cry", a bassless dance track; sterling funk-rocker "Let's Go Crazy"), one #2 (the slow, moving title track), and another Top 10 hit to boot ("I Would Die 4 U", Messianic but catchy), as well as the infamous "Darling Nikki" (which transcends "sexually suggestive") that spurred friggin' Tipper Gore to start the PRMC (an insult to everyone who believes in freedom of speech).Needless to say, it was huge -while I wasn't around during the decade, I think it was an '80s pop culture touchstone and certainly the album that made Prince a household name. It's also quite creative - check the bizarre ending to "Darling Nikki", which sounds like they chopped up and rearranged tapes or the one-ma nfunk-rock jam "Computer Blue". Add that to Prince's guitar, bass and keyboard playing everywhere (only Eddie Hazel is a better funk-rock guitarist) - particularly his guitar soloing on "When Does Cry"; "Computer Blue" and the title song. He's possibly the most talented multi-instrumentalists of our time, though Eric Dolphy and Brian Jones are stiff competitors. Topping it off is "The Beautiful Ones", a personal favorite of mine - it's one of the most intense, cathartic songs I've ever heard. So much for my perception of the '80s being totally soulless. Anyway, my only complaint - and a small one at that - is "Take Me With U" - not a bad song, but disarmingly sunny. Doesn't at all fit in with the rest of the album. Still, if this isn't his best album, it's second to Dirty Mind. (Oh, almost forgot the party song "Baby I'm a Star" - yet another standout song, the most traditional funk song here).

i love purple rain that and still is the best movie and soundtrack. i love darling nikki and beautiful ones. i love this movie. the other two movies was ok. prince is still sexy with the hip huggers and heels. no other man can wear that and be sexy. he is still handsome after all these years. i have been listening to prince since the 70's when he first came out. to all the fans purple rain was the movie of the decade. i love under the cherry moon also.

I love Prince and the movie Purple Rain, so naturally I would get it. The cd is worth every penny, I love every song on the ablum. It's truly one of those albums where you can listen to the entire thing without having to skip over songs you don't like which is rare. I recommend this cd to all Prince fans and Purple Rain lovers.

What a great soundtrack...brings me back to the age of 14, but who cares! The songs that were not overplayed on the radio are even better than the ones that were, but "When Doves Cry" will always be a fave no matter what - add it to your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Start to finish one of the best albums of all time!.......2007-03-10

What can I say that the other 166 reviewers already haven't?

One thing, the greatest travesty in all of music... The title track "PURPLE RAIN" only hit #2 on the charts.

My wife of the past 10 wonderful years was my high school sweetheart at the time. She had a boyfriend and was seeing me on the side and couldn't quite break it off with him. Well we went to the Prince concert at the now "gone" Market Square Arena in Indianapolis (most famous as the site of Elvis Presley's last concert). The greatest moment was when Prince was singing "Do you want him, or do you want me, cause baby I want you" it was like he was just singing to us. I looked into her eyes and knew I would never love another like her and never have.

Buy the album, buy the Dvd, also (much harder) find the live concert VHS that has an almost 20 minute version of Purple Rain at the end of it.

Wasn't the purple "rain" at the Superbowl awesome?

Where Off the Wall was pretty much straight good times, Thriller introduced dread into Michael Jackson's solo work. By 1995's HIStory, this element curdled into overwhelming self-regard and out-of-touchness, but here it's bracing. While Thriller offers its share of cute ("The Girl Is Mine," a duet with Paul McCartney that was the album's first single; "P.Y.T."), the most memorable cuts remain "Billie Jean," "Beat It," and "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," all of which meld musical imagination and worried-mind lyrics.

There's also the title track, which takes a cue from Parliament's concept pieces in employing Vincent Price to warn that nonfunky forces will "terrorize y'all's neighborhood." Thriller, of course, continues to battle with the Eagles' first greatest-hits package for the title of biggest-selling U.S. long-player ever. Bonus material on this edition includes "Someone in the Dark," from Jackson's E.T. children's album, and a Quincy Jones interview in which the producer cites "My Sharona" as the inspiration for "Beat It"--and, even better, the real-life Billie Jean's claim that Michael was "the father of one of her twins." --Rickey Wright

Someone once told me this is the biggest selling album ever. The song "Thriller" should have ended side 2.

5 out of 5 stars Real Music.......2007-06-16

This isnt just one of the best selling albums ever for nothing. Thriller is just an awesome album. This is what Pop music is really meant to be. The lyrics actually have a true meaning behind them and the beats are really great. The album has aged pretty well too. The voice of Jackson will always be remembered. He is a very talented man and this is his masterpiece. Its sad that most Pop music isnt this good anymore.

5 out of 5 stars 25 years later, Thriller remains the album to beat!.......2007-04-26

I was already a fan of Mike and the Jacksons, But when Motown 25 came on in 83, this guy set the standard for what music and performance could be and where it could go. Till this day in my lifetime that one performance at Motown 25 is the single most perfect performance I've ever seen. I remember the next day at school and the next month after that performance we had all kind of talent shows where all of the kids were trying to out moonwalk each other. The saddest and funniest part was watching the less fortunate kids who could not afford the Michael gear wearing tube socks with dress shoes and kids making home made glitter and rhinestone gloves. Hilarious. As an adult, I refuse to let the media and even Michael himself ruin my childhood memories of this untouchable piece of music.

25 years later Thriller remains the album to beat!

4 out of 5 stars Thriller Chiller.......2007-04-11

Everyone in the world owned a vinyl copy of this album once it hit big. At the time I thought it was a tad over rated and of course you couldn't escape MJ or his videos and Thriller is the opitime of how music was forever changed by MTV - not only did his videos sell the album, they were able to launch a total of 7 singles off of one 9 song album, unheard of at the time. When someone becomes huge and overplayed, I usually lose interest quite fast and instead of the popular songs find myself going towards the lesser known tracks. At the time Thriller broke my favorite song was actually "Wanna Be Startin' Something" but now listening to the song, the lyrics are quite awful but the beat, oh yes that beat is still golden. My copy of Thriller is the awesome remastered special additon with bonus cuts and audio about the songs by producers and arranagers, so it's really quite interesting. But it all boils down to the music itself and I must admit twenty some odd years later I am impressed with the album. I love the singles with equal passion - "Beat It", "Billie Jean", "Human Nature" (my current fav), "PYT", "The Girl Is Mine" with Paul McCartney(which is a song I used to loathe but now isn't quite as bad - though I still cringe when they talk to each other at the end, "oh paul I told you, I'm a lover not a fighter" umm okay Mikey) and the title track which you would think sounds like a dated piece of cheese but amazingly enough it's a very entertaining song. There's still the question as to why this of all the albums released at the time is the best selling album (or close to the best selling album) of all time, but it is a fun piece of music though it's a tad sad to think about what Mr. Jackson has done to himself in recent years. You just have to forget all that and look at the cover of what he used to be and hear the songs. Though once again I question who this damn Billie Jean is, if you recall she shows up in "Wanna Be..." as well. He really had it in for this girl. For the record, I always knew he wasn't the father of her baby, I had no doubt. In fact I have severe doubts he's the father of the kids he dangles off of balconies as well.

Songs in the Key of Life (1976) was the highest high point of Stevie Wonder's career. More sprawling than Innervisions and Talking Book, this two-LP-plus-EP was also less of a consistent stunner than either of those masterworks. That Songs retains an enormous amount of visionary relevance, though, is demonstrated not only in Coolio's borrowing of "Pastime Paradise" as a template for "Gangsta's Paradise," but in the cold-as-ice synthesized string quartet of "Village Ghetto Land." This is Stevie, so naturally that cut's anger is balanced by the ultra-buoyant "I Wish," "Sir Duke," and "Another Star." The 2000 reissue boasts radically improved remastered sound. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars My first choice for a desert island.......2007-07-08

Undeniably classic Stevie Wonder. If you're a fan you have to have this one; if you're new to Stevie this is the place to start. Unlike some of his sugar sweet music from the 1980s, Songs In The Key Of Life has some melodies that can only be described as "haunting" -- they stay with you a lifetime. Some believe that a great meal should be paired with a great wine. Here, each melody is paired with the right lyrics. It's perfect and it's also the one album I would take if I could take only one to a desert island banishment.

5 out of 5 stars The definition of music at its best........2007-06-17

If you check your local music store and looked through the Stevie Wonder CDs, you are likely to find this album more than the other albums (aside from "A Time To Love.") Though this album is over 30 years old, it's still in demand, and with a good reason: the 21 songs on this album are some of the greatest works to ever enter the music industry.

Most artists these days stick to one type of music, rarely trying something different. Wonder, on the other hand, has mastered not only his usual R&B and funk songs such as "I Wish," but on this album he also throws in some Latin, classical and funk/rock fusion twists, and he delivers them just as well as his usual genre.

Wonder without a doubt has talent in songwriting. He sings about almost everything that you can sing about, such as world peace ("Love's In Need Of Love Today"), love ("Knocks Me Off My Feet"), heartbreak ("Another Star"), world problems ("Village Ghetto Land") and equality ("Black Man") to name a few. No matter what he sings about he delivers some of the best vocals, lyrics and composing of all time. Most of his songs are upbeat and danceable, such as "Ngiculela" and "Sir Duke." "As" and "Summer Soft" are the most beautiful, poetic songs on the album and the music accompanying them are just as extraordinary. The funk songs Wonder is known for are also here. "I Wish" and "All Day Sucker" are funkier than "Superstition" from the album "Talking Book." "Ebony Eyes" is a very fun song that has a slight Beatles feel to it.

Wonder also includes two instrumentals: "Contusion" and "Easy Goin' Evening." Both of them show Wonder's skill with instruments, especially the harmonica (in "Easy Goin' Evening") which he is very well known for. "Contusion" is a great display of R&B/rock fusion and is very fun to dance to.

With twenty-one songs on this album, each of them some of the greatest songs ever, it's difficult to not like the album. This is music at its absolute best.

5 out of 5 stars You Can't NOT Give This Album 5 Stars.......2007-06-08

I never really considered myself a Stevie Wonder fan, but after listening to this album, I realize why people love him so much. The songs off this album have been sampled and re-recorded by so many other artists it's scary! His R&B songwriting was second to none during the mid 70s.
