Editorial Reviews

Product Description
The subtle sounds of The Moontrane Conductors debut EmptySea stick with you. Utilizing a diverse sonic palette from live instruments, digital sounds and several vocalists, Rob Easson and Noah Perry craft blunted journeys into acoustic downtempo, dubbed-out jazz and trip hop. It might be the first listen or maybe the forth, but these tracks will creep and crawl their way into your sub-conscious.

From the first track, beats smear like warm butter, making everything taste better. The rest of the album features both artists on synths, bass and guitar to create sublime sounds that slowly spin an inspiring chill out yarn. Just in time for the long winter nights and the first days of Spring, EmptySea warms things up.

Perry and Easson wrote and recorded most of the album in their studio in Oakland over the past two years. The local flavor is thick like fog on "Never the Sun," which crunches and cracks through Perry's rainy vocals. Buggafunk gets deep into the sub bass before digging it out with funk guitar and whammy synths to keep heads bobbing even in the horizontal position. "Wonderin" gets dangerously close to Phil Spector pop with spacey guitar, strings and a chorus that is infectious. The diversity will inevitably cause first time listeners to ask "is this the same band?" Then they will want to hear it again.

5 out of 5 stars je ne sais quoi.......2005-07-02

The music on this CD is hauntingly beautiful and much of it fills me with strange and wistful longings--a sort of "happy sadness," perhaps correspondent to the German concept of Sehnsucht.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2002-01-10

There was only one song on this CD that I did not enjoy. All the rest were great.

3 out of 5 stars Northern Lights.......2000-06-28

Better than most "New Age" offerings, thanks to the overall choices and imagery the music conjures up. Northbound is first cut and gives actual feel of travelling very fast over snow and ice. Sounds like a well-crafted soundtrack. Well worth buying when you need a beautiful, lilting symphonic head-journey-or when you just need/want to hear musicians other than U.S./British-born artists.

Some of the cuts are quite moving, some sturm und drang, and others reminiscent of the best of classical artists. One friend told me he could almost hear the ice crackling underfoot in one track, and another said he thought of the time he saw flights of geese southbound for the winter.

2 out of 5 stars "It makes me think of tubular bells by Mike Oldfield".......1999-02-13

"Music composed by Sisask is classical but added with a touch of symphonical rock. It was the feast of recognising when I listend to compositions like the forest. I only hope that Sisask does not go to far into the forest of early rock and roll"

5 out of 5 stars More than just Downtempo.......2005-08-24

I heard a couple of tracks in MP3 format and liked them a lot, but I've been caught out buying CDs from this so I was not expecting too much. BUT from the moment I pressed play to the last note I was most taken. Sure the stand out tracks are the two downloadables but the whole CD is better than the sum of the parts. Each track has its own identity and groove. Interesting arrangements typify each track and you find youself going back and finding more each time you play them. Also this CD benifits from being played LOUD on a decent Hi-Fi (something MP3s can't hack). Buy it you won't be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect Late Night Chiller!!.......2005-04-21

When I first listened to this CD, It felt familiar, but not in a played-out way. It has been in my shuffle for some time now and everytime it comes on I find something else to draw me in. It feels warm and doesn't have any unnecessary hype to it. These tracks have a timeless quality to them which makes me think that Empty Sea will be around for the duration.

    3 out of 5 stars It ain't THAT good.......2004-10-27

I picked this CD up on the strength of the glowing reviews on here - not the smartest decision I've made recently. Don't get me wrong, the album is a decent listen, and some tracks are excellent. But for the most part there is very little here that hasn't been done - and been done better - by others.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious... And Good For You!.......2004-01-29

This is one of those rare albums that you'll keep forever because with every listen you'll discover a new element to enjoy. When I first heard the dark, rich beats and compelling melodies I thought it was the perfect album to elevate you to meditative heights. It is. But after hearing it several times I discovered this album is much more than that; it's a perfect balance of minimalism and sophistication. The complexity enhances rather than weakens its delicate melodic content. This is a beautiful and crafty achievement from The Moontrane Conductors. I recommend this album to all music fans. Buy it now!

5 out of 5 stars Taking the Vibe to the next ..........2004-01-28
