As on their previous releases, this much-admired Persian/Indian crossover duo have created a separate yet spacious universe that is tranquility incarnate. The musicans, who have named themselves after an ancient form of romantic poetry, perform on sitar (a multi-stringed Indian plucked instrument with a tall fretboard attached to a resonating gourd) and kamancheh (a sonorous but gutty-sounding spike fiddle) and voice, accompanied by a tabla virtuoso (a tuned skin drum commonly played in India and Pakistan). They wander hither and yon, seemingly traveling between dimensions of time, thought, and feeling. People who find Indian classical music too demanding for a beginner and/or have no idea what Persian music sounds like need have no fear. These three extended pieces, called "Fire," "Dawn," and "Eternity," may be somewhat rarified but they are also utterly accessible. Performing live before a respectfully rapt audience, Ghazal is at once sensuous, austere, fiery, and spiritual. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars A trip from the terrestrial to the celestial........2007-03-24

"Gazal": An Urdu word, to me it means: a delicate poem of love and passion.

Pl let me share a few known things. Ustaad Shujaat is a maestro of Sitar, a seven string Indian music instrument, with a big echo box made from a shell of a gourd. He excels in "Gayaki" style where strings are plucked and intonations made to emulate vocal chords. He hums along and renders the words with Sitar as a fiddle, to follow up. He has a deep commitment to the tradition, at the same time is fearless to experiment and improvise. Please listen to his other CD "Lajo" where pristine folk tunes from Punjab, India have been given a rebirth. Amazing, indeed.

Kayhan Kalhor, for me has been an amazing find and gift to Indians; from Persia With Love. I have no words to write about him, but admire his art, vision, virtuosity.

Together they in this CD will enthrall anybody. If you can follow the words, this is ecstatic. Otherwise it is sublime. Listen and enjoy these to take a flight to another planet.

This is very inspiring music, to go on a trip, from the terrestrial to the celestial.

ENJOY.

During a cab ride I took in New York, the driver played a CD of some Indian music which included a male voice as well as sitar, tabla and tambura. I asked him what it was and he wrote the name "Ghazal" as well as some other words that didn't show up on the Amazon search. The Rain is not the same CD and I'm not sure if it's even the same artist. The cab driver's CD was pure classical Indian and The Rain is a sort of fusion of Indian and Persian. If I made a mistake buying this CD it was a very lucky mistake because the quality of the music is very high. The interaction among the players is of a very high calibre, like that of the very best jazz combos as they take a motif and work it as if it were composed but with such a feel of spontaneity which is so much the excitment of improvisational music. I suppose that many people would like to find a piece of music like this if they only knew where to look. I got lucky with this one and I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Bliss.......2006-05-28

I own so many cd's of virtually every genre you could imagine among my favorites being indian classical, gypsy jazz, fusion, and flamenco. This cd is one of the few that i would rank among my very favorites. Shujaat Khan and Kayhan Kalhor play in complete sympathy with one another and are provided great tabla playing by the up and coming tabla virtuoso, Sandeep Das. The interesting thing about this group is that they combine effortlessly the two traditions of Indian Raga of North India and Persian Dastgah. These traditions are very different but you would never realize by listening to this music. They each uphold their tradition but welcome the other with open arms and mutual understanding. In short, If you should only buy one album this year, I would probably choose this one. All of the songs are great and long. The last track "Eternity" is probably my favorite clocking in at about 20 minutes and taking you to a place you could never imagine. Shujaatji really proves his remarkable since of music and his astonishing control over the sitar on this one. Also to check out would be Ustad Sultan Khan's album with Ustad Zakir Hussain of Raga Bhupali and Ali Akbar Khan's duet with Pandit Nikhil Banerjee on the Signature Series. ESSENTIAL TO ANY HUMAN BEING!

5 out of 5 stars Hindu-Persian Beauty.......2005-12-18

Few CDs from my 4000 collection of CDs get into my car for a long ride as frequently as The Rain. I just cannot have enough of Kalhor's kamancheh sound and the peaceful Hindu-Persian feeling that it evokes. The sound brings back for me the memories of my younger days at my aunt's Safavid era house in the Northern Iran city of Rasht and the peaceful Zoroastrian temples of Iran and India where I spent a lifetime of happy hours. This is a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars it sends me.......2005-12-09

My music staples are blues and rock, but I like all kinds. Whether it's blues or classical or Persian/Indian the masters of the genre put me in a zone that makes me forget about the cowboys looting our country. THis cd does that. These guys make great music.

Album Description

More marches, waltzes, and fox trots in this recording of the New Verbeeck Band Organ at Seabreeze Park in Upstate New York. On a hill above scenic Lake Ontario, the music of the band organ can be heard on the breezes drifting over the blue water. Twenty-three tunes bring back the sounds of summer from Seabreeze Park - the whirling carousel and prancing horses spin around to the music of childhood, and this fabulous recording captures the wonderful memories. Grab the popcorn, and come for a ride! This completely digital recording is crystal clear and an oversized insert includes pictures and fond memories of Merrick Price - to whom the album is dedicated. The last song was recorded on the carousel while it was moving - an innovative idea that captures the sensation of really being on the ride is enhanced by wearing headphones. This piece of Americana in music - a must for the audio collector, carousel enthusiast, or fan of mechanical music, is a one-of-a-kind gift item.

3 out of 5 stars carousel.......2007-01-03

Carousel Memories does not have the luster that I had expected. The music is not as clear as I would have liked, however, it does have some good qualities that make it worth while to listen.

5 out of 5 stars The Ideal Merry-Go-Round.......2005-07-18

This is a recording by and for merry-go-round lovers. It assembles 23 tracks of mostly characteristic carousel music, played upon a newly constructed band organ handmade by Belgian Johnny Verbeeck to replicate the old Wurlitzer 165 destroyed by a fire around 1995. The fire also claimed most of the carousel itself, which was rebuilt using some restored parts from the original (PTC#36). The recording site is Seabreeze Park on Lake Ontario in upper New York.

In another review I mentioned that that CD offered a partial and rather idealized carousel experience, for it could only provide the sound, and that sound was much more refined and free of ambient noise than would be encountered during an actual carousel ride. That comment applies as well to this recording, and perhaps more so, for the band organ in a typical operating carousel never sounded so good as the one here. This instrument has a remarkably lovely, sweet tone and, being brand new, is in perfect condition. The rolls used were obtained from no less a source than the Library of Congress, and represent a very choice selection.

The music itself includes mostly waltzes, marches, polkas, and one-time popular songs, such as Beer Barrel Polka, Sweet Rosie O'Grady, Liberty Bell, and Scatter-Brain. Less to be expected, but supremely apt, is the fine waltz from Richard Rodger's overture to the musical show Carousel. This last was experimentally recorded on the moving carousel, and thus provides an especially realistic auditory image.

For merry-go-round and band organ enthusiasts this recording might well occupy a place of honor in their CD collection. For those who desire a more realistic, though less ideal, recording I would recommend the old 1973 Takoma Records release "Last Chance on the Merry-Go-Round" (# A 1038), which I believe is no longer in the catalog. (Takoma Records was acquired in 1995 by Fantasy Records.) My personal copy of A 1038 is an LP, and I suspect no CD version was ever released. That recording was made at the carousel on the pier at Santa Monica, California, shortly before the pier was to be demolished. (Thus the title of the recording.) Since it was made while the carousel was actually in operation, the sounds of bystanders and children, along with the carousel drive motor are included. I don't know what ever became of that carousel or its band organ, but would guess they were moved to some collection somewhere. In any case, I have fond memories of wandering along the pier on a fine Saturday afternoon and watching and listening to the carousel and its excited young customers.

4 out of 5 stars Needs a better title.......2007-03-12

I kept running across this CD and thinking (from the title and the cover art) that it was some sort of New-Age mumbo-jumbo. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

The only overarching theme to this CD seems to be that these are pieces that Peter Serkin likes to play. That's a lucky thing for the listener. These are excellent pieces and their performance indicates yet again that the Serkin genome has expressed itself nobly for another generation. None of the pieces is lengthy: in that regard the novice listener can explore new music without overextending. The experienced listener will enjoy it even more. There are some gems in here, including a languid(!) piece by Wuorinen, a dandy Toccato by Wolpe, lovely Takemitsu, aggressive Messiaen and much more. The playing is precise and impassioned. The recording is clear and intimate. It's a keeper.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have had some difficulty in enjoying this CD. However, it must be good to use the right half of our brain, which is usually not used.

    Album Description

Spirit of the Healing Waters - On the edge of the earth where the land meets the sea, we can embrace the power of the healing waters. And from a hidden source that pours up through the surface of the land - from the bellows below - bringing forth nourishment of minerals and other healing properties for those who drink and bath. Water is the purity and nourishment that covers three quarters of this earth. It is the grace and presence, the power of the origin - as it said that life itself originated in the seas. Even the Romans understood the power of the healing waters from deep within the mountains, long before the era of wellness and beauty. Because the people were unable to understand the effects of the thermal water, it was long said to have mystic powers.

This extra ordinary album will leave the listeners speechless and in a daze. Tinh's music is a wonderfully crafted blend of western and eastern influences that brings out the powerful emotions of Tinh's experiences growing up in Viet Nam during the war. “Acoustic Rain” is also a dedication to the soldiers who fought in the Vietnam War, and to those families whose lives are forever alter by the most complex war in the U.S. history.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Tinh - Acoustic Rain" - Heartfelt Music to Listen to........2001-11-30

"Tinh - Acoustic Rain" is one of those recordings that only comes along every once in awhile that challenges the listener to stop what they are doing and actually listen. It is not uncommon for us to be complacent to the music that floods our airwaves and home stereos much like our detachment to the weather that streams past our windows just outside of the comfort and controlled environments of our homes and workplaces. But "Tinh - Acoustic Rain" has thunder and lightening that pull you out and into the wonder of a passing storm. There are rumblings in the distance, strong wind in the trees, shafts of light peering through the dark grey clouds, and occasional rainbows that inspire and lift the spirit. What is truly remarkable is that all of this is achieved with the honesty and simplicity of a solo effort, the intimate outpouring of notes from six strings of the acoustic guitar.

Tinh is not trying to present yet another work within a popular style while adhering to all the usual conventions of form and technique. What we have here is passionate musical storytelling born out of intense personal experiences while growing up in his war-torn homeland of Viet Nam of the late 1960's. The story of events in his life can't help but seep into the well of his imagination and out through his fingertips. "The Fiery Sky" reflects upon the surreal nights he sat with his Grandma in all the deadly horror of the orange glow of flares intruding upon the night sky witnessing the exchange of fire raining down from a passing helicopter and up from nearby ground forces. "1968" summons up the waking nightmare of the Tet Offensive. Although not all images of turmoil the moods of this music ebb and flow from that of war to peace and hopefulness.

Don't look in this music for a political accounting of this time where sides are taken, justified, and complex issues are simplified. This music recounts the humanity of having lived both sides of a difficult era still puzzling to most of us today. He shares his life with us from the earliest years, the confusing times that followed after his being kidnapped by the CIA and airlifted out of Saigon just before it fell, his growing up in America, to his visits of the Viet Nam War Memorial, his meeting American veterans who had lost part of themselves in this conflict, to his hopefulness for a future of peace in a lullaby to his own baby boy.

In closing, it appears that this music instead of disappearing into the private life of this quiet Oregon musician has been destined to come before us with the encouragement and guidance from none other than John Fahey - "Father of the American Fingerstyle Guitar" who helped develop his playing style, and this recording's producer George Winston who recognized his innate and unique talent to speak to our hearts through the acoustic guitar. What you have to decide now is whether you are ready to stop and listen to some sincere and heartfelt music.

Fans of acoustic music must hear this strikingly unique album. Tinh's original style of guitar playing and his evocative compositions can leave you breathless. Especially powerful is the cut "Islamabad," which conveys the listener to a culture and a part of the world that is highly significant these days. Tinh's virtuosity with the instrument is astonishing. If you take a chance on Acoustic Rain you will not be sorry. It's fantastic!

      3 out of 5 stars Muted sounds.......2006-06-12

As far as club music goes, this is pretty good. Shri (Shrikanth Sriram) mixes tabla with bass guitar and bamboo flute to create some pretty interesting sounds. Shri is an outstanding musician, having played with a number of other stellar musicians such as John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain, but he is best known for his work with Badmarsh, producing club music for the London scene. I heard him on BBC and was fascinated by the percussive way in which he played the flute, but you don't hear much of that here. The sounds seem muted as Shri keeps himself contained within the genre, turning out grooves moreso than music.

      3 out of 5 stars Good but..........2006-01-17

Not as good as others by Badmarsh + Shri nor the previous solo cd.
Though - ALTHOUGH - it have some remarkable tracks - Appa2, Di Floris and specially A Piece Of Peace - wich is an unforgettable intemporal and universal piece of music.

        5 out of 5 stars Sheer Beauty.......2001-11-01

This CD has been in my walkman for weeks
Wonderful short melodic piano pieces in unusual time signatures
Reminiscent of Satie's gymnopaedies (if that's how it's spelt)
Listen to this and Yoshimatsu's piano concerto
At last modern music that actually communicates on an
        emotional level!
