Essentially 'DJ Masters' is a 3 CD collection of current & forthcoming 12 inch vinyl release mixes, captured on CD for those unlucky enough not to be on the wheels of steel, yet still have a need or yearning to have the latest club killers ahead of their full commercial release, or even access to mixes that aren't available on the commercially released CD single. The discs have also been deliberately unmixed, so as to provide scope for the end user to use each track more effectively. Central Station. 2004.

Fancy a game of chess?.......2007-03-22
On the first disc, Satoshi displays the type of mechanical precision found in car assembly lines; the product, however, is far less stable; what this really means is that the style is less predictable and therefore more exciting. "Farra" begins very slowly with xylophonic chords - giving the introduction to this disc a spacious atmosphere. As a result I always find myself in a complacent headspace that is soon shattered as the music unfolds. The feather-light sounds that weave over and under the melody effortlessly capture and calm the ear - until, that is, a wickedly cool and funky bass-driven groove gives "Air Moves" and "Don't Push It" the collective momentum needed to propel the first mix closer to its peak. The cool and delicate atmospheric consistency never gives way to anything too overpowering. Interrupting (and it is hardly a rude one!) the ambience is "Darkroomboot" by Opus Ink, an alias representing the collaborative efforts of Satoshi himself with the rapidly-rising European duo Audiofly. The tempo quickens, the melody gains definition, and the rest of the album explodes with a restrained energy that I found to be decadently suitable for cocktails and good conversation prior to entering thunderous dance floors. Arguably the sickest beat on the first mix appears in "So That's What Happens", which is surrounded by electro-robotic harmony. The beat is momentarily interrupted by silence, save the churning of electric turbines; it returns, seconds later, with the same latent ferocity as before. The timbre of DJ Yellow & King Britt's "Alienation 3/Beyond the Forest" reflects the track title so well. Haunting synths cascade over a cooler and slower foundation and remind me of the feeling one would experience if one were to gaze upwards in the center of an unknown forest, touched simultaneously by fear and spiritual awe. And how fitting it is that Jim Rivers' "I Go Deep" follows! Its deep and eclectic rhythm flows like water in a brook, slowly removing one's head from the forest and placing it, gently, back into the pre-club environment. "Praise" and "Aura" end the first disc with an upbeat, mid-tempo jazziness that is quite enjoyable.
Satoshi breaks disc two down immediately, hinting at the raw energy-to-come with the uniquely staccato "chopstick" percussion of Thugf*cker's "Ahh", later dropping into a hard bass drum. I will admit that I'm not crazy about the admittedly creepy male spoken-word vocals in "I Need", but they are quickly and quietly overlooked as the cowbell-driven pace of Matt O'Brien's increasingly popular "Serotone" kick in neatly alongside the first identifiably "dark" grooves of any track mixed on either disc. It would be wise to heed the title "Lose Control", because from this point onwards the aural journey becomes bumpier, wilder and more "Satoshi" than has been shown on the album thus far. I felt that the upbeat and bouncy atmosphere shoots like an arrow straight through the heart of the second disc. The next several tracks continue the cerebral-dance theme, and "Moods" drops a particularly body-moving rhythm that warrants mention. The peak of disc two is reached with a great pairing of tracks by Satoshi; in this case, D'Julz's "Flick It" (Original Mix) and Guy Gerber & Patrik K's "Sleeping in the Bass Box". I think the combination works perfectly; the smooth and respectable build up of "Flick It"s electro-energy erupts with a mean bass line that drives the melody as much as acting as a segue between "Flick It" and "Sleeping in the Bass Box". Take note of the latter title, because that's precisely the impression this track left me feeling I'd experienced. "Cropduster" and "Driven" polish off this fine piece of work, and end disc two with a far better fade-out than was given on disc one, where "Aura" seems to arbitrarily disappear.
The complexity of Satoshi Tomiie's latest (and, dare I say, greatest?) achievement is hard to swallow at first. Only after four sessions of listening to both discs straight through was I able to realize the insight Satoshi projects. I would have to say that this album is tied for my favorite amongst the "Masters" series with Cattaneo's Part 5. Satoshi Tomiie manages to create the most outstanding aural chess match I have ever heard - and although it is Satoshi who moves the pieces, it is the listener who ultimately wins the match.

Album Description
LEGENDARY UK PROGRESSIVE HOUSE DJ/PRODUCER DAVE SEAMAN RETURNS TO HELM THE SEVENTH INSTALLMENT OF RENAISSANCE'S RENOWNED MIX ALBUM SERIES: THE MASTERS SERIES. Dave Seaman is undoubtedly one of dance music's most respected and revered global DJs. Seaman's previous releases lauded mix albums for GLOBAL UNDERGROUND, BACK TO MINE, and THRIVE/RENAISSANCE. Dave's previous installment of Renaissance's The Masters Series ('Desire') was the best selling mix album of Seaman's career. Dance music fans will no doubt be anticipating Seaman's return to this legendary series, which has served as the introduction to DJs such as Sasha & Digweed and Deep Dish. With its instantly recognizable Masters Series signature artwork and a tracklist that boasts new material from Sasha, Thievery Corporation feat. David Byrne, Bedrock, Gabriel & Dresden and Dave Seaman's Group Therapy, this title looks to be one of the most anticipated dance albums of 2006.Customer Reviews:
Disk 1 - **, Disk 2 - *****.......2007-03-21
The electricity will shock you..........2007-02-26
Opening with the cleverly off-beat percussive layout of Sasha's remix of "Seal Clubbing" the first mix is infused with fuzzy electric background which does not disappear until later in the album; Dave Seaman's mix is almost entirely electro-house oriented and the case for this is strengthened with the presence of cascading layers of brightly-toned synthesizers. Light, bouncy beats keep this startling new sound afloat, but the album quickly becomes buoyant in its own right when Buick Project's "Lumiere" drops - and lands with a bang. This is one of my favorite electro tracks, especially on B.P.'s "Productions and Remixes", and it introduces an entirely new electronic timbre. Sweetly melodic bass grooves, salsa rhythms and cowbell festiveness get the body moving quickly, making the entirety of disc one a pulsating mosaic of avant-garde EDM. The one regrettable exception is Dave's inclusion of "The Heart's a Lonely Hunter", which works beautifully in Thievery Corporation's "The Cosmic Game" but briefly disrupts the ebb and flow of this mix. Tracks seven through twelve establish a surprisingly solid electro-house vista, but the highest point of the first disc comes when Seaman lets loose his own 9+ minute Group Therapy Mix of Gabriel & Dresden's "Tracking Treasure Down". With some of the most cheese-free and beautifully presented lyrics I have heard since Julee Cruise's contributions to Hybrid's "Wide Angle", the prolonged track time is necessary to fully digest all that the track has to offer.
Disc two drops with the decidedly quicker pulse of Paradise Soul's "Spirit of the Turning Tables Part 1" - an indication of good things to come. If you enjoyed Seaman's mix on "Therapy Sessions 2", you will dig this disc. Driving strings slice through the music, sketching the dance landscape before the album even gets going full-steam. The vibrating bass chords on "Randoms" would be enough motivation to get anyone's feet moving, anyway. That vibe rages through "Don't Walk Away" and well past "Sedna"; here, Dave shows off his ability to work with techno-infused trance. "Hype" ups the BPM with excitingly choppy, at times robotic rhythms that blast full-force across the remainder of the album - but it soon becomes clear that this disc is all about the drum and bass. Deep, relentless grooves snatch the listener's ability to remain still. The second mix arguably peaks with Rowan & Jaytech's "Tomorrow" and Bedrock's "Santiago", which both have the elements of perfect club songs that help cap off disc two as noteworthy.
I see this release as the perfect test of the "progressive" house fan who will do one of two things after hearing Dave's mix: Press "repeat" on his stereo to become immersed all over again, or cry out in agony as he grasps for his copy of "Desire". Either way, with beautiful artwork and equally beautiful music the seventh Master's Series release presents majestic self-evidence that Dave Seaman is indeed a master at pioneering club music of the near future. This mix is electric; I have fun watching the sparks fly.

Renaissance rules!.......2007-01-10
Leave Your Body, Leave Your Mind.......2006-11-14
Near the end of a three year love affair with the genre, I started to get sick of the house (techno-industrial-trance-rave-electronica-etc) scene, primarily because of its plodding redundancy and razor-thin digital frequencies. I love to let go and dance, but I don't usually bring my own CDs to the clubs. When I dip into my collection, the milieu has much less strobe to it and far more cushion and candle. So instead of inspiring me to get up and grind, the old standards were starting to grind themselves.
After purchasing a woefully inadequate "Best of House" volume, I checked out Amazon.com to see if anyone else felt as disillusioned by the album as I did. One reviewer dismissed the Best of House series with a single sentence: "this isn't even a fraction as good as the Renaissance series."
So, on that, I took a chance. How grateful I am.
Although both discs in Seaman's exquisitely crafted installment blend elements of the "let's dance" and "let's chill" house/trance attitude, they can almost all be listened to out of small speakers. There are a few rough spots in the album (The Heart's a Lonely Hunter is like a clown in a police line-up -- it's a great song, in its own right, but it does not belong here at all; the Janicki mix of Pure by Hawaii falls prey to old problems -- ill-conceived vocals layered under an internally self-defeating rhythm structure). Every once in a while the songs hit one of those gritty patches where it sounds like you're listening to a record skip and you're wondering why no one is replacing the needle.
These moments are rare and easily forgivable, however, given the rest of the album's frenetic mastery. Seaman has managed to mix and meld the sounds here so that it gets the heart and the mind pumping at the same time. I sometimes wonder whether I should just jump up and move, or give myself time to be introspective and meditative. Unimaginably, I think this album makes it easier to do them both at the same time.
Everyone has a favorite when it comes to sets like this, and although I definitely prefer Disc 1, that's only because, in general terms, it's more mental and soulful, while the second disc has a heavier helping of physically pulsing tendencies. But these are hair-thin distinctions. Both discs glide easily between extremes. From the misty sleep tingles of Lumiere, to the creeptastic Memory Man; from the luminous melancholy of Sunrise, to the happy-hearted road rage rhythms of Connected; it's all good here.
Like I said: I believe in two kinds of House (et. al.) Maybe you're the kind who's up for something to get your blood flowing, or maybe you're the kind who just needs some slightly aggressive ambience to goad reflection and relaxation.
I think you'll both be pleased.
Surprisingly good........2006-07-24

Founders of the "Nuyorican sound," Masters at Work, a.k.a. "Little" Louie Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez, were the most revolutionary house production team of the '90s, so imitated that their innovations are now clichés. Latin percussion, joyous vocals, and natural drum beats are MAW trademarks, levitating dance floors with the band's infectious feeling of ecstasy and energy. If ever there was a massive dance floor filler, it was MAW's 1997 record, Nuyorican Soul, and now, Our Time Is Coming. With cameos by Patti Austin, James Ingram, and Stephanie Mills, the album doesn't break new ground. It simply proves that MAW still write/remix great songs that are more organic and soulful than any current house offerings. Highlights include the Afrobeat-tinged "MAW Expensive (A Tribute to Fela)," Mills's gospel fire on "Latin Lover," and Roy Ayers's glorious vibes solo on the title track. Taking credit for saving a WTC life in "Michelle's Message" is totally crass, but MAW handle even that with style. --Ken MicallefAlbum Description

Album Description
Born at the Royal Festival Hall on 10 March 2003, the London Sinfonietta / Warp concerts grew out of a shared desire to explore the connection between the electronic experimenters on the Warp label and the avant-garde 20th century pioneers who were their sonic grandfathers, at least on one side. New instrumental versions of Squarepusher and Aphex Twin tracks sit side by side with avant-garde classics.Customer Reviews:
Classic Avant-Garde...Electronic artists collide, for this release...!!!.......2007-05-03
This is all handled and performed with the usual commitment and precision, that you'd expect from The London Sinfonietta, with what seems like a orchestra, that brings to these arrangements to life, by the use of beautiful soft strings, and a studied melancholic atmosphere, and this unique experiment is accentuated by graceful rhythmic and simmering electronic touches that hover above the orchestra, and would by and large...prove too complex for existing instrumental ensembles to fully interpret , and using mechanical processes replicating the loops and repetitions of computerized music, these composers/performers fascinated by untempered, non-orchestral sounds, were skilfully able to shadow the textural variety usually associated with electronica.
It's a heady experiment for sure....and it's sounds a million miles away from the difficult, fractured and freewheeling sounds and beats of Squarepusher & Aphex Twins work. (although certain segments of the performances do recall the textured, cerebral and sophisticated moods of their more ambient / downtempo tracks). And it'll take a remarkably committed fan of Squarepusher/Aphex Twin, to immediately recognise these re-compositions, such is the wildly different sound & arrangements. Where electronic sounds and computer arrangement have given way to actual instrumentation (with electronic effects assisting) thereby what you mostly find is that if a track was originally a frantic, volatile dance track, that shifted and accelerated around a high BPM, that it has largely been transformed it into something like manic, skewed Stravinsky. It's a radically different sound..for sure!!, that loosely resembles the originals, and are indeed far closer to Steve Reich and John Cage's, Stockhausen's experimental avant-garde work...which works a great deal with repetition, which if you not familiar with Cage, Reich's & Stockhausen's work, may prove difficult to digest.
For all the brilliance on display here, it's difficult to see who this album is aimed at??.....for me, there's no denying to excellence of the musicians/performers and their ability to perform this material. But fans of Aphex/Squarepusher, may find these interpretations, difficult to appreciate, as they initially only slightly resemble the originals. And fans of Cage/Reich may well have no interest in the work of Aphex/Squarepusher, when there is plenty of works of both Cage/Reich's/Stockhausen's own original work to choose from. But viewed as a stand-alone one-off experiment, it's a fascinating one, that although the connections with the original work are tenuous, at best....the stunning performances make this a thoroughly engaging listen, and it really is one of those albums that gets better with each listen, and what at first may seem a little flat and unremarkable, definitely grows in appreciation, the more your prepared invest with this and give several plays. And those that buy this knowing what to expect, will hopefully get as much out of this as I did.

The strings and synthesizers are extra loud. Those elements may sound overblowned and bland in the hands of unimaginative musicians, the musicians at Salsoul were innovative enough to give the music that visceral punch that was often missing from the commercial artists.

Music you should be listening to.......2004-03-28
Many of these songs might be familiar if you are into neo-disco, and house music. I'll mention some of my favorites. Loleatta Holloway's "Dreamin" is here in the Norman Harris/Carl Parulo Mix. Some of you might remember the Satoshi Tomiie remixes that came out of this track. This is quite similar to that one. Carol Williams' "Love Is You", is a perfect piece of classic disco. By the way, this song is the basis for Spiller's international smash "Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)". This song should have had more success. The highlight of this collection is Loleatta Holloway's "Love Sensation." This is one of the most successful tracks on the Salsoul label. Loleatta's voice is simply amazing! This song has been the basis of countless club hits. "Good Vibrations" by Marky Mark, "Ride On Time" by Black Box, and 'you Got Me Burning Up" by Cevin Fisher are just some of the songs that have used this monster vocal. Just for this song, the collection is worth it. Also, there is "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Inner Life. This is the same song that Diana Ross did too. This is one of the first versions of the song. This is also the best one.
All in all, this collection is worth every cent. Bring out the polyester clothes, the mirrorball, and those platform shoes! This collection brings the disco era into your home.
It's a must-have for everybody!
Can't wait for volumes 2, 3, and 4!!
Every home should have one.

Second time around is a charm .......2007-01-04
enjoyable. There are grand moments on volume 2 that can stand among the best moments on Volume one. "Hit and Run" is the centerpeice of the set where Loaetta Halloway booming vocals tear through 11 minutes of a funky guitar driven groove. "Love for the sake of love" is a great slow burner (which is also the DNA for Montell Jordan's hit "Get it on Tonight"). "Nice and Nasty" is one of sleaziest dance songs ever recorded. Even if the lyrics are somewhat tame compared to what Rick James and Prince put out a few years later, the sexy melody and its even sexier beat is enough to get couples juiced up on the dance floor.
That being said there are some less than great moments on this disc. "Everyman" has a tight philly groove, but its bogged down by its overbearingly preachy lyrics on manhood. "A night to Remember" and "Janice" might be a bit too zippy for some (especially those who prefer a slower pace where the strings and basslines can really thrive in the songs). With 18 long tracks across 2 dics, those inferior tracks are easy to ignore.
Hey I can't give it all away. You gotta buy this album if you're a serious fan of dance.
