Mostly good.......2007-05-26

A bit of a mixed bag. The symphonies are superb. This is one of the great symphony cycles. The piano sonatas are good, very good (analog) sound. The quartets are well recorded indeed, but there are better cycles out there. The rest is OK, and the sound is genrally good.

Look at the List of Performers First.......2006-11-17

If you want most of Beethoven sitting on one bookshelf, this is a great bargain (especially if you shop for it on amazon.de). But few if any of the performances represent the pinnacles of interpretation that most listeners demand when Beethoven is the composer. The symphonies for instance: can Blomstedt be compared to Furtwangler or (if you lean toward historically informed instrumentation) Gardiner? Most amazingly, the artists who perform the quartets -- the heart of Beethoven's music -- are not even named in the listing.
On the other hand: Vivaldi: The Masterworks is a collection including the very best interpreters, such as Fabio Biondi! Bach Edition (complete Bach) is a fabulous selection of recordings made over 20 years, and almost the same praise can be given the Complete Mozart.

There is quality beyond the Austrian green cardboard (which is lovely to look at, to say the least). In fact, the performance of the symphonies (Dresden Staatskapelle and Herbert Blomstedt) is alone worth the price. The Staatskapelle is a solid group, and Blomstedt, although less wellknown, holds his own. It should be mentioned that Blomstedt recorded many of the most celebrated 20th composition CDs on the market, and definitely knows his stuff. Peter Wohlert recorded mostly for compiliation lables, but to be selected by the Berlin Phil shows that he is a formdiable conductor in rank as well.

Should you buy this collection then? Given the fact that each CD cost $1.75, there is definitely the bargin factor. However, Beethoven's music desveres the top interpreters and musicians of our time - and this applies for all of his music, not just the symphonic. If you are into bargins, then proceed to buy this collection. However, if you save up a bit more, you can buy Karajan's 1963 Beethovens symphonies along with Kempff's 1956 sonata cycles for just a bit more than 70 bucks. Shop around for the string quartets, and the complete overtures should range anywhere from 15 to 30 bucks depending on the conductor/ensemble.

Overall, this is certainly an exceptional bargin. However, quality matter more than money. Besides, chicks dig people with sophisticated tastes.

I was very pleased with this box set from Brilliant Classics. The sound quality is excellent and the performances are also very fine. Note to potential buyers - this is not a period-instrument performance. I am not a particular fan of those, so this set was ideal for my tastes.

I may be in the minority, but this does not work for me.......2007-03-01

I approached this with great hopes. I'd just heard some of Uchida's Mozart sonatas and Debussy etudes, and enjoyed both, though neither, perhaps, to justify her reputation. But I've long respected Sanderling. I love the Concertegebouw and other orchestras he conducts. Philips is my favorite label for sound. Should be a dream set, right?

Oh, why do dream sets always go so wrong? I literally have not been able to get through one movement in this box. They all sound so detached to me. Uchida plays with perfect control, but in my view she does not understand Beethoven, with her fussy trills and dynamics that are outsized from those of the orchestra, especially in the delicate Fourth. She and Sanderling seem to be on separate planets as they perform these works. But even in the solo 32 Variations in C minor I get nothing from her. This is not "great" Beethoven, but it's always been a big favorite of mine because of the impromptu nature of the work--unlike almost all other Beethoven, it sounds as though it were written in a white-heat, sort of a 19th century jam session or cutting contest. Here I get none of that spontaneity; just thoughtless re-tar-dan-does at the end of big phrases and the big slowdown at the end just before the last chords. Sort of an autopilot performance. Surely Uchida must have thought about what this music (all of it) means, but I get no indication when I listen to this. Similarly in the 3rd concerto, her rather fantasia-esque cadenza in the first movement sounds at odds with her and Sanderling's straightforward, four-square interpretation of the rest of the movement. Emotionally it feels like they never connect.

According to Arrau, Sanderling is the only conductor he ever worked with who saw the first movement of the Fourth Concerto as sad. He says they never even talked about it; it was just instinctual. I don't get that feeling in this recording. I got to the second part of the development section and had to eject the disc in disappointment and disgust. This is probably my favorite piano concerto, and certainly my favorite Beethoven concerto, but here I get none of the rhapsodic flow of melodies, the soaring and falling dynamics, the delicate, the inevitable build to the recap, or long-range pacing and structural understanding that make Arrau/Galliera or Arrau/Haitink or Kempff/van Kempen so special. Admittedly this is a hard nut to crack, and admittedly I have some very personal views on how this music should go (more elegiac than anything else), but still, I'd settle for *any* personal view, and my main complaint here is not a disagreement of a strong-minded interpretation on Uchida's part but rather a lack of any interpretation on Uchida's part. The others are similarly sterile, like Beethoven through a public address system, or an interoffice memo. All that is special about Beethoven has been removed. Instead we have "flawless" playing that has the charm and character of a block of wood.

Maybe Uchida is just wrong for Beethoven. She's a colorist, and colorists do not do well in LvB's music. She also seems to specialize in lighter, more transparent works, and Beethoven calls for some pounding, some fist-shaking at the gods, as well as sudden, almost bipolar changes to sweetness and innocence. She doesn't deliver the goods. She's too refined and aristocratic and all glass surface. Some other reviewers have compared her favorably to Grimaud in the 4th--another incredible misfire in my opinion. Even more puzzling is Sanderling. Maybe he just didn't strike fire with her. Maybe he did, but I'm not hearing it. Maybe he's just getting old. But this is not among his better work, in my opinion.

The sound is a bit bright, especially with the piano, which is very upfront and seems to often get louder as Uchida plays high on the scale--or is she just involuntarily crescendoing? This sounds fine in my car but lousy on my better-quality home system. The cynic in me says they're now engineering CDs more for automobile listening and iPods than anything else. This one is going into my "sale" pile right away.

The Ultimate Who CD.......2004-03-24

For anyone who appriciates good quality music - this album is ideal. For Who fans it's perfect. Ive heard critisms that without Moon, the who have lost it - absolute nonsence if you ask me. Zak Starkey who has been drumming for the who sice '94 is bloody amazing! The ONLY person worthy of moon's stool! Townsend, although old now, is still fantastic, strumming riffs and really pelting his guitar. Daltry has been on better form but he can still pull it off. As for Entwistle, only one word - Amazing ( his solo in 5:15 prooves this. The show as a whole is excellent with an overal performance that seriously rocks. It just highlights that after so long together, The Who are still the best band ever! Both the DVD and CD are worth buying.

The original recording was good but this is astounding !!!!.......2004-02-21

Having purchased the original Steamhammer recording when it was first released, I didn't think that anything could top the quality of the original disc, live recordings being what they can be. Often times the sound is muddy or unbalanced or the crowd noise is beefed way too high in the mix. Well, believe me when I tell you that the SACD Hybrid Multi-Channel version completely blows it away. Everything is pristeenly clean and clear with no break ups at any level that I played it at! Pete's guitar (power chords and all) were clear and (unwanted) distortion-free. John's bass was thunderous yet very clear and solid and Zak's drums and cymbals were perfect yet none of the aforementioned instuments got in the way of Roger's vocals. Personally, I wish more cd's were available in this format as it buries the sound quality of a standard cd. If only the prices of SACD discs were more reasonable. Aside from that shortcoming, I recommend this disc wholeheartedly.

The 1973 violent breakup of the Everly Brothers is well documented. Ten years later a reconciliation took place resulting with this concert in London's Royal Albert Hall. The concert was taped and originally released on VHS. (I bought a copy when it came out. It's nice to see Amazon offering the audio version as my VHS tape has long since worn out.)

Phil and Don enjoyed a strong British following throughout their careers making the Royal Albert Hall a natural place for them to reunite. Their voices and harmonies were still in good form and the crowd was appreciative. Traditional Everly Brothers fans will enjoy this double CD. Others may be a bit put off by some of their less known and more traditional songs.

John Philip Sousa was a great musician and a great American. These recorded relics are very fascinating, and sometimes most vivid, reminders of his greatness

Great historical resource.......2000-08-24

This set consists of every recording released under the name of "the Sousa Band", from 1897-1930. Since some of these recordings are over 100 years old, they tend to be somewhat scratchy and occasionally faint. If you're a casual fan or you're buying your first Sousa record, your money can be better spent elsewhere.

However, these recordings are an invaluable resourse for students, performers, and teachers. Even with the limitations of early recording devices, there is no better demonstration of the style and nuance of the "March King" than these performances under his own baton. Also, the chance to actually hear Sousa's voice as he introduces the great "Stars and Stripes Forever" is to step into the past.
