Amazing Brazilian Post-Punk from the 80's.......2005-09-29

The vibrant and energetic Brazilian Post-Punk movement from the 80's went by without anyone, outside of Brazil, taking notice. Finally, Soul Jazz (thank you!) decided to put out this awesome compilation. Now the world can listen to how Brazilians reacted to American and European Punk music. "The Sexual Life of the Savages" covers a lot of ground from the guitar-heavy music of As Mercenarias and Smack to the moody and sophisticated ambiance of Chance (one of my favorite bands to this day), from the experimental and rich rhythms of Patife and Akira S to the tropical goth of Cabine C and NAU, and from the low-tech samba of Fellini (the best Brazilian band EVER) to the spooky 80's tecno-pop of Harry. This is experimental Post-Punk music like you never imagined.

The CD kicks off with two songs from As Mercenarias, an all-girls Punk band who delivers their hard (and melodic) music and political lyrics with amazing confidence. The guitars in "Inimigo" sound like a crazed video game that is ready to Tilt. Hot.

Patife, who appears around the middle of the CD, is another great band. They sound like a mix between a tropical A Certain Ratio and, in a sarcastic way, a greedy business man. Their vocals and rhythms are great.

Fellini is my favorite band of all times. They have recorded 5 excellent albums. The most recent one, "Amanha e Tarde," came out a couple of years ago, and I highly recommend it. It is a bit different from what you hear from them in this compilation.

Gang 90, A.K.A. Gang 90 & Absurdettes, has only one song in the CD, but they are some of the pioneers of this Brazilian 80's scene. Their album "Essa Tal de Gang 90 & Absurdettes" is a Brazilian classic and it is available on Amazon (another album I recommend). It has more of a New Wave feel to it; if you like Talking Heads, Blondie, and the B-52's, you will love it.

Chance is just so sexy. Unfortunately, I think they recorded only the two songs that are in "The Sexual Life of the Savages." With lots of pianos, subtle rhythms, whispered and spoken vocals, they exude tons of sexuality and moodiness.

Although not all tracks in "The Sexual Life of the Savages" are great, most of them are of unexpected and amazing quality - classics. Check this CD out, and, if you like what you hear, check out some of my recommendations above. I think you will be very surprised by this Brazilian Post-Punk scene that no one has heard of until now.

Great comp from Soul Jazz!.......2005-09-28

I bought this about a month ago, never expecting to be too impressed by it. I just wanted to have a taste of something that seemed like a bizarre concept to me, initially. I mean Brazilian post-punk?! C'mon! I love Brazilian music (60s/70s) and bands like Os Mutantes were as good as most psychedelic bands in the US and Europe in the 60s, but i couldn't imagine a post-punk movement doing something significant in a country like Brazil.

Those late 60s/70s artists, heavily influenced by rock music, created a wonderful mix of sounds, they called 'tropicalia'. In the US and the UK (Europe), the mid-late 70s brought with them a new movement in life and music: punk. The thing is, i have no idea if punk ever 'happened' in Brazil. I'm sure Soul Jazz will surprise me with a wonderful Brazilian punk comp sometime in the near future (!), but this ignorance of mine made it harder to grasp the concept of a POST-punk scene in this country.

This compilation is sublime! It is easily one of the best V/A comps i've purchased in a long long time! Sure, these bands borrowed a lot from their UK/US heroes (Joy Division, NY No Wave scene, Gang Of 4, Pop Group etc), but they manage to make those sounds entirely their own. I think the fact that it's in a language most people can't speak helps in that department. It adds a certain exotic quality to these recordings, that's for sure.

This collection consists entirely of songs from the Sap Paulo post-punk scene. As the compilers note, cities like Rio De Janeiro also had an equally vibrant scene at the time, but this set focuses only on SP.

In conclusion i'll just say this: if you love post-punk and are looking to discover some 'new' sounds then you're in for a treat! I hope i'm not overhyping it, but if you're into this sort of music then this is an essential CD!

Wow ! Track 3@4 are ok and take some getting use to, but all 18 tracks are wow ! Punk there is, but it seems to me it is 80's all the way. A must and get ready. Check out the liners.

This cd single for "Sexual", Amber's 1999 dance hit, contains 5 remixes of this hot and sexy song. Track #1 is the well-known remix that was used for the music video and on the radio stations. Remixed by Thunderpuss 2000, Track #1 is probably one of the most exciting and sexiest dance songs to come along in recent memory. Thunderpuss 2000's remix never fails to throw people onto the dance floor because the song is laced with fast and heavy pulsating beats that you just can't resist. The beat is very candid and bold. From the moment the song opens with Amber singing "Li Da Di", you are hooked. The best remixes on this cd single are Tracks #1 and 3, by Thunderpuss 2000, and Track # 5, by Thunderdub. Sexual Li Da Di~ Amber is an amazing trance that has sounds that jive right on with the music and Amber has very good vocals. I can not say good enough things about the synth sounds since they are a perfect match with her amazing vocals. The lyrics are basic yet effective and amber sings them beautifully and the samples and sounds are in about as good as that of ATB and Okeanfold use. I love the cover and Amber is one hot chick with amazing tallent.

Worth buying only for the Thunderpuss mixes (Club + Dub). Fast BPM with strong beats makes it a 'very club' song. I bet it was a big hit when it was released. Other mixes are not good enough if u r an experienced club music fan. They r really nothing special. Anyway a 'must have' CD for every club music fan!!!

Amber's Sexual always gets my body moving whenever it comes on in clubs. This collection of remixes done by DJs Thunderpuss and KLM are very good. I can't pick any one of them as standing out; all are very good and catchy. If these remixes doesn't get one on to the dance floor then that person doesn't know how to have a good time.

Amber creates a great dance song with SEXUAL (LI DA DI). There are several remixes--all of which pretty much sound repetitive.

It's still a great song. Hearing one version of it should do.

This is a single everyone who loves having fun should have. Those who like club music will have a great time, too. Let me explain: every track here is fantastic, the original version included. The beat captures you in all remix styles. And you have music for all occasions, since there are long and short versions here. Thunderpuss (one of the remixers) did a great job here, as usual. One of Boston's best rock bands was essentially a power trio with four singers . What's not to like with lyrics ..." I want to be Jackie Onassis , I want to wear a pair of dark sunglasses ." These guys really rocked ( this isn't the Cars )and several songs build to such amazing crescendos at the end that you just want them to play on and on . I always turn up my c d palyer loud towards the end of Guardian Angel , milking every last note , till , sadly , its gone ,but hoping they might play it longer every time I listen .I'll put it this way , Guardian Angel is one of the best damn rock song period.

It's an addiction between us..........2002-06-11

In late 70s/early 80s, Boston was alive with some of the best bands that never made it "big". Human Sexual Response was by far my favorite band. This album lived on my turntable. My brother used to beg me to stop playing Marone Moan and go to bed. I paid no attention to him. I couldn't. It was an addiction between us. The whole album is great. Cutting edge stuff that was way ahead of its time. Dance to Jackie Onassis and What Does Sex Mean to Me. Learn the words to Marone Moan - it's a great ballad. If you know this band, you already have this album. If you are curious, waste no time in buying this CD. Oh, and Wendell did indeed lick Betty Ford's boots. He worked at Filenes when Betty ordered a pair from the famous department store to wear to China. He was packing them to send to her and decided to lick them before he put them in the box. She wore them all over China.

In A Figure 14 Mood.......2002-03-17

I wholeheartedly agree with the above assesments that this band would have been big, given the proper, and due, promotion. Even though it is twenty some years later, give them a listen. Their performance talent and writing brilliance is still evident.

I was amused the other day when I was listening to Rage Against The Machine and I heard them quoting the refrain from "Jackie Onasis".

The Association meets Art-Noise Rock = Human Sexual Response.......2000-03-09

I've been listening to this album since it first came out and Boston radio station WBCN really got behind "What Does Sex Mean To Me?" (back in the days when major market stations supported local acts..but that's another story), and this CD release brings it back sounding better than ever. The four lead vocalists harmonize with unique strength and a beautiful blend, with a truly rocking power trio bashing behind them. They deserved far better; they were probably just too bizarre for their times - and way ahead of them! HSR developed an unprecedented sound, and the feedback/noise in "Unba Unba" & "Dick & Jane" hints at a musical movement that wouldn't develop for another ten years. A truly great debut record which should have hit big nationally; if only MTV had been around, Human Sexual Response would have been HUGE. Check out "Marone Moan" and "Anne Frank Museum" - no other band has ever combined four-part harmonies with such fierce instrumentation, and the surreal soundscapes they created have never been duplicated. A genuinely unique and inimitable band.

The complete mixes, and they all work!.......2006-11-19

Here you get three mixes which were abridged or dubbed on a different cd single with the same artwork. Well, on this cd you are getting those mixes in full form.

The Norman Cook Full Version Mix is a full-on Fiesta. Since this song is a party jam, this version only compliments that with the Fiesta vibe.

The Blaze Shelter Vocal Mix was a dub mix on the other cd and it made was a cool and jazz instrumental with very little vocal. Here it is complete with vocals.

Miguel Migs' Petapusher Vocal comes in full form here. This mix is closest the original.

All the mixes are to the point without ridiculously long intros, repetitous loops, etc. Also these are not techno mixes - not saying techno is no good but sometimes it gets to be too much - but are more in the R&B/Soul realm, except for Norman Cooks.

Despite all the remixes being good, the Original is still my favorite. This does not mean the remixes fail in any way, but sometimes first impressions are hard to top. I would put the Blaze mix in second place with Miguel's in thrid and Norman "Fatboy Slim" Cook's in fourth.

Este grupo chileno, originario de Valdivia, es un grupo que buscó un concepto musical, parecido a The Wall de Pink Floyd, o la Cantata Santa María de Iquique de Quilapayún. Un concepto de disco, canciones y propuestas. Con comics, y sonidos rockeros de América latina. Es un buen disco, aunque tuvo poco resultado en cuanto a ventas, y es el trabajo más complejo de este grupo chileno que aún canta y hace canciones.
