Pleasant New Agey Quasi-Chill.......2007-03-31

It's not particularly adventuresome - it's a pleasant collection of quasi Southeast-Indian Asian sounds with an underlaying bed of beats - with tracks best labeled as New Age, trip hop or a few that qualify as dance chill.

So, while it may have mixed by a DJ, this is at best minimalist chill so with the exception of 4-5 tracks, they are not really ready for the dance floor. Most of the tracks are really light trip hop, or New Age.

It's nice, it's pleasant, it's professional and it's slick but it doesn't leave much of an impression.

Good but not great.......2007-02-25

Having purchased the Cafe Oriental distributed by Navarre C 2006 with its excellent mix of Asian sounds, I was expecting more of the same. I actually found this CD to be more generically electronica/lounge than Asian-esque in sound.

I would rate the 2006 Cafe Oriental 5 stars and consequently would have to rate this CD below it. Buy it 'used' and enjoy nonetheless.

Holy ash....it's incredible..this compilation is a meditative travel between spacy sounds and lateral/never heard beats ..No doubt: it's my best compilation of 2002.Listen to "Acquired Dreams" by

Product Description

The second album from Celestial, "Happy Valley" is all about love, life, death, madness, mixing up cultures and time signatures, the passing of time, pollution, weather, trains, planes and automatons. It's not about a place - "Happy Valley" is a state of mind. The album reflects the mix that is Celestial; a song from 1930's Shanghai is backed by distorted drums and scratching, a traditional Irish tune is translated into Thai and backed by a Nepalese Trio, a Chinese melody from Taiwan is played on Japanese traditional instruments and given a laid back drum and bass backing. Interspersed by the ever-present sounds of modern life - traffic, clocks, and weather; the album is tied together by the ever-present sounds of modern music; samples, synthesizers and breakbeats.

All the reviews for the Celestial CDs here are fake. They are all of the same guys trying to promote these albums and they review other albums, just to plus this one. I am actually a fan of the hong kong dj music scene, but this is a despicable fake marketing scheme that should be exposed...just click to see what other cds the "reviewer" raves about.

Asian Fusion music that Works.......2006-06-05

Asian fusion is not a concept that I normally embrace may it be food, clothes or music with the exception of Happy Valley. The mix and balance of traditional Chinese classics such as Shanghai Nights and Gao Shan Ching is just right and not contrive...in fact just like Happy Valley, where I live....the perfect original mix of local Chinese culture with modern western influence is what makes this CD one of its kind.
