The Big Blast!

Editorial Reviews

From Jazziz
Keyboardist Ron Pedley and guitarist John Pondel co-lead Kombo, which also includes electric bassist Matt Bissonette and drummer Gregg Bissonette. In the late '80s, Pedley and Pondel, based in L.A., were members of the fusion band Uncle Festive. Later, Pondel moved to New York, where he got involved in acid jazz, but they've been reunited here by Verve producer Bud Harner, a former Uncle Festive drummer. Kombo can be seen as part of the hammond b-3 revival movement, rooted in the traditions of Jimmy Smith and Booker T & The MGs, but it has some distinctive qualities - most obviously a more laid-back, if funky, approach than most groups of its type. Pedley is a relaxed keyboardist and thoughtful improvisor who doesn't mind being subtle, as he demonstrates on "Ladies Man." Although he mostly plays B-3, he also plays electric piano, Farfisa organ, and clavinet. Like John Patton, he can play quite melodically. His work on "Never There" shows that he can swing hard, too. Like Pedley, Pondel is a technically proficient performer - dig his double-timing on "Green Onions" - who blends jazz and R&B influences smoothly. Incidentally, the last track on this CD, "Hidden Blues," is deliberately not listed and doesn't begin until about a minute of silence has elapsed on the selection. It's not clear that this makes sense because it's the best cut on the CD, a straightahead 1960s-type blues on which Pedley and Pondel play tasty, gem-like solos.

4 out of 5 stars Their Second Best Release.......2002-08-28

Repeater has masterful production, solid playing, singing (hey my bandmates and I [The Beltways]helped out with the backups on Dixie Liquor And Beer)and writing. Another cool album from a very talented band. It's easily their second best release;Ultrasound still gets the 5 star rating from me just because of the "fun factor" of the tunes, but that's just my taste.Repeator does show some musical growth, but sometimes primitive is more "fun".If you are into indie pop you won't be dissappointed;this band is cream of the crop!!

4 out of 5 stars A soild release.......2000-09-20

if your into power pop, ie superdrag, raspberries, or even the pixies you'll love this album. You can hear all the infulences...from the beatles, to the beach boys, to even the ramones. Songs like dot com, and joan of arc, and master of space and time, show you they have a niche for making great catchy songs, and adding there own bit of orginality. Hopefuly the next album will be a bit more experimental, but for now, this album rocks. It may not be a pet sounds, or a head trip in every key type album, but is really worth the time and effort to hear this talented and up comming band

2 out of 5 stars An average, not great, re-lease........1999-09-06

People rave about this band and I'm not sure why.Out of theashes of The Greenbury Woods ( a truly great band) Splitsville does'ntlive up to the hype. "Why can't it be" is the album's highlight, a nice acoustic guitar based pop number, it reminded me a little bit like the Beatle's Rubber/Revolver era. Other than that this is sub par power "punk" that has more in common with Green Day than Big Star or the Rasberries.

5 out of 5 stars Baltimore trio deliver THE power pop album of 1998........1998-10-02

The 3rd full length from Greenberry Wood refugees Splitsville starts off just like their 1st two: with a blast of pure power pop adrenaline. As before, the power portion is tempered with their innate grasp of pop history, and hooks that might be more accurately described as claws.

Like Nick Lowe in the late 70's, Splitsville are masters of the recycled hook. However, like Nick Lowe, their appropriations come off as more tribute than rip off. "Manna" recalls Cheap Trick's most brilliant moments. Tricky time changes are utilized to good effect in "The 1st Thing About Regret", as well as lyrics that aren't the normal pop fluff, "I love you, you love me" variety. Dig this: "You'll stay the way you've always been, you beautiful and selfish s***. You should have been a pair of pairs of ragged paws upon the doghouse floor.". The narrator in "Master Of Space And Time" tells his girl how much more obsessive he could be if only he could stop time from marching forward. The story unfolds while the sound of a clicking clock keeps the time like a demented metronome, and the song fades out with the most beautifully creepy keyboard chorus I've ever heard. I could go on and on but what's the point. The bottom line is this:

From top to bottom this is brilliant, 3-part 'Everly' harmonies, crushing 'Raspberry' power cords, whisper to a scream 'Pixie' dynamics, and exquisite 'Beatles' songcraft, that any self respecting fan of rock 'n roll should own.

Product Description

Hi, and thanks for checking out Kenin, the DC based roots rock quartet. Kenin's sound is a mix of genres - the band is fronted by an acoustic guitar, so it begs to be called acoustic rock. But the guitar is played hard, the drums are heavy and the lead guitar is an often-distorted electric, which pushes Kenin out of the acoustic rock genre. There is a lot of percussion, and a lot of live improvisation, which makes it feel at times like a jam-rock band. Regardless of the genre, the beauty of the project is that it's appealing to almost everyone and at the same time musically respectable.

Great acoustic band with some eletric guitar. Awesome cd definately buy it.

5 out of 5 stars This band is money.......2005-04-23

Their debut record, "Left Behind," surprised the hell out of me. It's rock vocally reminiscent of Dave Matthews and musically sorta like what O.A.R. would be if they tightened up, got some musicianship and got a little dose of pop. On "Just Another Blast," the band ventures into darker and more challenging lyrical material while keeping their signature sound. Definitely a must-buy.

3 out of 5 stars From a jazzer's perspective..........2007-04-29

I am a huge Jimmy Smith & Joey DeFrancesco fan, as well as a HUGE Soulive fan, and I heard the title track on Pandora radio, so I thought, "What the hey, I like what I hear; maybe this is a good raw jazz album.

I was left feeling a little dissappointed. As a jazzer, I was waiting for big solos in the middle, and they never came. Soloistically, this album is like listening to a 6th-grade big band. I can tell Ron Pedley is a good B3ist, but he never "unleashes." Likewise, Pondel's compositions on this album are quite solid, and they groove, but there is never that "Oh Man!" moment. Well rehearsed band, overall, but a little lacking from a jazzer perspective. This is a cd more geared for easy-listening fans.

Pros: Well-rehearsed band; smooth and accurate; good compositions
Cons: no climax; "restrained" soloing; no characteristic tracks, more easy-listening than jazz.

5 out of 5 stars A smooth and groovy kind of jazz..........2001-09-29

Ron Pedley on the Hammond B3 organ is a true joy to listen to. And Jon Pondel brings funky electric guitar riffs to the forefront -- along with the excellent playing of Matt and Gregg Bissonette. I listened to this album twice straight through when I first got it, and now it has become one of my favorites to leave in the CD player. Smooth, funky, and yet very modern. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Super Duper Combo.......2000-09-07

This band is so good. I went to a concert they had out here at a local banquet house. If you think the CD sounds great, you ought to hear them LIVE. Wow, did they blow my socks off! There's nothing like sitting right in front of the bandstand for that unbelievable live sound. It sounded just like being in a recording studio. It was a fantastic concert I will never forget!

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2000-08-03

This is a great CD. The tracks have that perfect groove kinda thing. I can't wait for the next CD!

5 out of 5 stars Smooth and sophisticated.......1999-12-03

This is cool jazz, great to listen to, really sets a mellow mood. Ron Pedley really makes that Hammond sing. Buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Screwston Baby.......2005-04-28

Yo, ive been reading a few of these reviews but I havent seen anything out of HTown. The birhtplace of screw. This CD is pretty hot. Anyone in Houston reading this also needs to check out that new Slim Thug underground. I dont know what the name of it is, but its one of the hottest albums ive picked up in a while.

5 out of 5 stars Bangin that Swishahouse.......2005-04-26

Up here in Indiana, we bang screw too. The Final Chapter 2k5 was off da meter and the second disc Straight to the Room 4 is a sure fire hit for those late night creeps or even just that smoothed out nightcrawlin' music. I popped the Final Chapter 2k5 in the CD player and of course I had those haters, but that's because they didn't know where to get it. I recommend this new offering from DJ Michael "5000" Watts to anybody who likes their music Screwed Up!!!

5 out of 5 stars Clean CD.......2005-04-09

This CD is awesome. Paul Wall, Mike Jones, Mike Watts, Archie Lee, Coota Bang and everybody else go so hard. Nice flows and good chop and screw of the songs

5 out of 5 stars Cream of the rock crop!.......2002-06-17

These are extraordinarily good singles, though the effect of hearing them in one sitting can be monotonous, even overwhelming. For this reason, it may be best to savor these gems a few at a time. Anyway, Cannon lays waste to the longstanding myth that Nothing Was Happening Just Before the Beatles. In fact, the Invasion bands owe more than a slight debt to these loud and high-energy rock classics. So does Brian Wilson. In their early days, the Beach Boys drew heavily upon the influence of Cannon, Eddie Cochran, and, of course, Chuck Berry.

The sound quality is first-rate, though I almost think some of these sounded better on vinyl--in particular, the magnificent "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans." But this is hardly the fault of the Rhino label, which should be praised for giving us one great compilation. The liner notes by the late Cub Koda are most excellent.

4 out of 5 stars The last rock and roller.......2001-10-22

Freddy Cannon was unique in the late 50s and early 60s -- the period between the dumbing-down of rock and roll and its final destruction by the Beatles -- as the only new performer who really rocked. On the hit list of 1959, we find `Everybody's Somebody's Fool' by Connie Francis, `Heartaches by the Number' by Guy Mitchell, `I Guess Things Happen that Way' by Johnny Cash, `It Doesn't Matter Anymore' by Buddy Holly (what a shame such pap is the last song we were given to remember this great rocker, who didn't live to see it climb the charts), `Forty Miles of Bad Road' by Duane Eddy (not bad but you only have to compare it with with his first hit, `Rebel Rouser' to see what was happening), `There'll Never be Anyone Else but You' by Ricky Nelson and, Ladies and Gentlemen, `Tallahassee Lassie' by Freddy Cannon. Not only was it fast and noisy, but it had the goofy, lascivious lyrics (``She comes from Tallahassee, she's got a hi-fi chassis'') that have always characterised a good rock and roll number. I remember being surprised that this song was actually allowed onto the airwaves in those Days of Blandness and even more surprised -- as well as delighted -- when he followed it up with jumpers like `Way Down Yonder in New Orleans' and `Palisades Park'. He might have changed the course of musical history had his success inspired others but sadly it did not, and even he vanished under the British onslaught of 1964. Nevertheless, he deserves more recognition than he has received to date. The four-star rating is awarded because a couple of the songs don't quite fit in -- even Freddy didn't like `Jump Over'.

4 out of 5 stars JUST ABOUT A 5 STAR CD.......2000-07-13

Freddie Cannon was unlike most of his contemporaries in the business. His early 60's sound was fun, raw, horns and heavy drums all out dancin' and singin' Rock 'n Roll.It certainly wasn't an abundance of singing talent. But, he didn't try to be a singer. Freddie was a rocker! This serving of 20 of his hits and near hits is just sensational, the definitive Freddie Cannon. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is the horrible opening cut, Cannon's very early effort as part of the Spindrifts.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of energy, sounds like fun, a big sound, great hits........1999-08-07

I liked his hits in Australia in the 60s. Transistor Sister, If You Were A Rock & Roll Record are representative of the era. Jump Over is a great tune and typical of the "catchy" love tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Boom Boom classics et all.......1999-08-02

You have to get this one for all Cannon fans! Its rockin and the quality is superb. Themed in the 50s as "the last of the rockers" Freddy demonstates how such an apt title came his way.

Listening to this cd, watch the film...enjoy it then when doing something like tidying your room, slap it on. You'll find-and i can guarentee this-that during a certain song reprisal, you'll stop and tears will come to your eyes and you'll wish you were a child again. That song is of course 'You Can Fly', it makes my cry, escpecially what happened to Bobby Driscoll.

As a lover of Peter Pan, this CD was a wonderful addition to my collection. The songs are just wonderufl, and the instrumental music is great to hear when you've seen the movie, or even when you haven't! For anyone who is still yearning to let out their inner child, this is the CD for you!

5 out of 5 stars where no man has gone before.......2003-06-12

This collection is pretty much a hodgepodge collection of scraps from Sun Ra's later NYC period, but what a wonderfully spooky set of mindbending moments. Some of this stuff was copped from other albums, ie. When Angels Speak of Love, while other stuff are short pieces that never got tacked onto anything before. Like a Saturn version of the White Album, these selections each stand strikingly alone, as opposed to forming any sort of coherent whole, but the whole thing works as a united blow against the ordinary or familiar. In its on raggedy way, it stands right up there with the other 60's gems from the man of mystery.
