About the Artist
A pianist since the age of 5, Rose Ann Dimalanta, alias rad. went on to study music at Berkeley with Susan Muscarella while at the same time learning and playing alongside Bay Area legends like Pete Escovedo, Benny Velarde, David Garibaldi (ex-Tower of Power), Ray Obiedo and such prominent players as multi-percussionist Michael Spiro, Rebeca Mauleon (author of the Salsa bible "Salsa Guidebook for Piano and Ensemble"), among many others.

Heavily influenced from those laid back R&B and latin jazz sounds of the Oakland/San Francisco Bay Area, the keyboardist, vocalist and songwriter, began her solo project and career from the harbors of Hamburg, Germany, performing in the clubs of the reeperbahn red light district (as did a well known English band, originally from Liverpool, starts with a B.....).

In 1992 her first solo album. "radified" took European dancefloor charts by storm. The track "Wishy" became an underground club hit in cities from London to Munich to Montpellier. Its successor "Gotta Be," with the jazzy track "Venus Drops" helped make rad. a repeatedly sold-out act at Paris' Hot Brass Club as well as London's Jazz Cafe.

An exciting live performer and a perrenial concert tip in venues all over Europe, rad. has consistently been on the road since the release of "radified".

On Higher Plane, the much anticipated third album rad. delivers ten new songs with the charm and attitude. rad. keeps pursuing her very own style of meshing funky grooves with solid songwriting and unconventional arrangements. It also marks her return to California, drawing upon her r&b roots and love for West Coast latin jazz. Intentionally reducing the instrumentation to a minimum, rad. creates an intimate and wonderfully inviting atmosphere. From the opening track Never Stop, a light and breezy foray in 7/8 tempo to Layin' Low, a romping vocalese track not unlike a brazilian afoxe' with a twist of Oakland, to Guarabe Love, classic rad. with a dash of Soul Sauce, to E.L.B.O.Y., a bolero-esque soul ballad, to tunes like Natural, Days Gone By and the title track Higher Plane. And not to forget grooveneck tunes like the reflective Emily's Garden and upbeat Be With You. A feeling of bright lights, big city comes to mind in the closing track Veils, an alto sax laden shuffle with quotes of James Brown thrown in for good measure.

This album will ease you from a loud Saturday night into a sunny Sunday morning, and still allow you to be painfully hip.

Higher Plane showcases the development of rad.'s unique vocalist-pianist style, as well as the talents of a team of highly respected musicians and friends. Drummer David Garibaldi and guitarist Ray Obiedo compliment her arrangements perfectly, notwithstanding the fact that all three stem from the same geographical area. Fans of early Tower of Power (DG!) recordings will be delighted to hear David's ever so crisp technique again, and perhaps a newness in his playing as David has been studying world rhythms intensively since then. Ray's impeccable taste and time enhance rad's keyboard playing (E.L.B.O.Y., Guarabe Love), a talent that his previous keyboard partners including Herbie Hancock and George Duke have taken advantage of in the past. Check out the beautiful and melodic bass playing of Marc van Wageningen (Sheila E.) on Never Stop and the ever attitudinous smack of bass Bobby Vega (Sly Stone) on the title track, among others. Veils, the album's most elusive track, is given! a good dose of West Coast with some lascivious blowing by saxophonist and former Yellowjacket Mark Russo. rad.'s dirty left hand Hammond organ bass lays it all down on Guarabe Love, check out her funky vocalese solos on Layin' Low (Grand Piano) and Be With You (B3 organ), and a gorgeously haunting moog solo on Higher Plane.

while I Miss the R&B/Pop Side of Al Green the Artist His Gospel Material isn't to be overlooked.this a Double Cd on one&it brings so much power&Soul.the first track alone "The Lord will Make a Way somehow" is Classic Al Green&to me is as Important as His Past Great Songs.

Hidden treasure.......2000-08-27

When I bought this c.d. several years ago, it immediatly became one of my favorite c.d.'s. I found out about Davol on a program called "Currents", and there was no question that I had some catching up to do, not only with this c.d. but with his two previous releases. One of my favorite tunes from Davol is on this c.d., called "Gates of Ishtar". It is just absolutely magical and inspiring. Davol covers musical territory that no one else has come close to matching.

Great album, a must for acid jazz fans. Listen to this with a glass of wine and dim the lights....it doesn't get better than this.

Beautiful album.......2000-06-10

Greatly crafted songs, top notch players. Since I bought it I haven't taken it out of the CD player. My favorite is "Guarabe Love", which has a nice latin feel. Makes you wonder why we don't hear RAD all over the radio. Get it.

Album Description

Bluesoul features compelling songs penned by Nulisch and his collaborator / bassist Steve Gomes and hip treatments of three timeless gems by O.V. Wright, Magic Sam, and Albert King. Throughout, Nulisch's plaintive, natural voice and his band's horn-fueled groove create a fresh sound: call it Bluesoul. It's a bold, contemporary groove that exudes the feelgood warmth of the music Darrell, and probably you grew up loving. It's the expression of one man's heart, not a recreation of others past musical achievements. Not strictly blues, but all blues at the core.

Bluesoul was meticulously recorded at the world-class Pearl Sound in Canton, Michigan, a heartbeat from Detroit. Recruited for the sessions were Motor City's tastiest percussionists and heaviest hornmen, injecting a bit of Motown into Darrell's funky Texas roots.

Darrell has established a strong following through his many stellar performances on the Black Top label, including recordings with Anson Funderburgh, Ronnie Earl, Hubert Sumlin, and his own group, Texas Heat. But he feels that this current project is by far the most exciting of his 20-year career.
