Terrific sales of their independent Cheshire Cat got Blink-182 signed to a major label (MCA) for 1997's Dude Ranch, which led to radio hits ("Dammit," "Josie") and platinum sales. No "sell-out" on the band's part, though, as Dude Ranch simply features another infectious collection of snotty vocals, punchy rhythms, vivid lyrics, and aggressive chords. San Diego producer Mark Trombino shines some of the scuffed edges, but this is still good ol' Blink at its sunny, effervescent best. Nice "emocore" spoof here ("Emo"), plus an odd knack for crafting bass-lines that recall--seriously!--New Order, and vocal harmonies that owe debts to the Beach Boys. --Mark Woodlief

assville.......2007-05-19
ok blink rocked hard. boring is the best song, untitled is also sweet.
other blink songs; obvious, stftk, give me one good reason, reckless, dumpweed, asthenia and also not now.
Very Good!.......2007-01-21
A must have album. If you're new to Blink182, then this is a good album to start out with.Awesome songs like "Dammit" "Josie" and "I'm Sorry".Most of their songs are sex jokes."Voyeur" is...well, the name it's self explains what the song is about."Degenerate" is about Tom Delonge (Blink182 guitarist) is running around in the middle of the night drunk, naked, passes out and is found later in a guter.Later on in the song he sings about going to a farm to tip some cows.Finding that he left his pants down.He bends over to pull them up and finds a farmer pointing a gun at him.So mostly the songs are kinda "inapropreat"
The album Cheshire Cat is no different. In one song they sing about wetting themselves all the time.
But mostly you will find in allmost all of their songs that they're all about girls and love.Very "Pop-Punk"
But if you enjoy that kinda stuff and a good laugh then this album is for you.If you like Fall out boy and Panic! At the disco you'll probably like this band.
Unhappy.......2007-01-09
I ordered the game for my daughter on 11/28/06 quite confident that her wish list items were bought and I could forget about it. I never recieved it and was never informed by Amazon that it was returned as undeliverable. So on Christmas day when she opened her presents, she asked where it was. I told her I ordered it and we started looking about the house as to where it was. After going on the computer to the website I then found out that it was returned and my credit card had been reimbursed. Shame on them. I will not use them again. I believe they got too big for their britches and the customers are the ones paying the price.
Blows everything out of the water!!!!.......2006-09-14
Dude Ranch makes EOTS and TOYPAJ look like the worst albums ever. Except for the blink's self-titled album, the record beats everything they have ever done. I was entertained through out the whole album and every song was as good as the last, particulary "Emo" which actually reminds me of some of Jimmy Eat World's old stuff. The guitar is actually really good compared to blink's other records (i.e. Degenerate, I'm Sorry, Waggy) though it definately isn't anything close to something like Jimmy Hendricks or Van Halen, but who cares :) To sum it up, your blink-182 collection is not complete without Dude Ranch!
Still sets the bar after all these years.......2006-08-21
It's been almost ten years now since Blink 182 released Dude Ranch (oh God, I'm getting old!) , and yet it still sets the bar for what a pop-punk album should sound like. While "Enema of the State" may have sold more albums and truly made Blink 182 a household name, many people were introduced to Blink 182 via the radio single "Dammit (Growing Up)". While many simply placed the cd back on their shelves after they played that song out, many others discovered that they were quickly falling in love with Mark, Tom and Scott and the rest of the "punk" rock movement of the late 90's. While I'm sure Tom Delonge's voice was an awful shock to many who purchased Dude Ranch after hearing "Dammit", older fans as well as new recruits were addicted. Dude Ranch starts off with the best formula Blink had to offer; Mark and Tom trading off vocals over a fast punk rock beat. If "Pathetic" didn't/doesn't do it for you, you should probably put down the cd. However if you find it hard to wipe the smile off your face, you'll find out that the rest of the album is truly a punk rock classic. "D*ckips", "Apple Shampoo", "Emo", "A New Hope" and "Josie" (which had some small success as the follow up to Dammit)are my favorites, but their are really no bad songs on Dude Ranch (although I don't usually listen to "I'm Sorry" anymore). This is the last time Blink 182 would sound this way for an entire album. Scott Raynor would leave the band and be replaced by the more talented Travis Barker, but whose drumming is truthfully less "punk rock" than Scott's was. Tom's vocals would become overproduced, and Mark's catchy little bass solo's would become almost non-existent. I'm not sure how this album comes or will come across to those who discovered Blink later in the band's career, but I can speak for all of the older fans when I say that Dude Ranch is a true classic, that can never be replicated or replaced. *****

One of the real boons of the digital revolution has been the steady reissuing of vintage recordings and unearthed gems. The music from Africa and the Caribbean have yielded more than its fair share of goodies, none better than Cult Cargo: Grand Bahama Goombay, a 16-song collection featuring an array of local artists who recorded between 1968-76 for the Freeport-based GBI label. The music is deeply influenced by the funk of Sly and the Family Stone, Otis Redding, and James Brown with touches of gospel, calypso, and jazz thrown in. Ozzie Hall's version of the Dave Brubeck hit "Take Five" is an oddball treat. Never mind that 99% of music buyers will not recognize the names of the artists here, the music is warm and vibrant, filled with a myriad of hip-swaying grooves, soulful singing, and catchy songwriting. Another chapter in the Cult Cargo series, this collection may be the best one yet. --Tad Hendrickson

"Numero Uno" among the Numero Uno comps.........2007-07-19
OK, I'll just spit it right out. To me, in terms of quality, this ranks right up there with the soundtrack to "The Harder They Come." That's the highest praise I know to give. Thumpin' gumbo of soul, funk, reggae and various Caribbean styles. Guitar riffs and Hammond chords abound. Some interesting covers, especially "Theme From Shaft" and "Take Five." Purists will note that Ozzie Hall leaves out about a fourth of Paul Desmond's notes from "Take Five" but you should enjoy it plenty nonetheless. "Shaft" is more interesting if you don't quite realize it is "Shaft." Without reading the track listings first, I thought to myself, gee this sounds a bit like Shaft without lyrics. Then it came: "Who is the man...." Big smile! "Don't Touch That Thing" from Sylvia Hall is a great piece of sister to sister advice. The subterranean bass vocals in "Whatcha Gonna Do 'Bout It" provide a nice counterpoint to the rest of the song. We get some contemporary social commentary of the period in "Build a Nation" and "People Won't Change." My favorite track is "(Somebody Stole) The Words to my Song." Indeed the lyrics are brief and repetitive, like someone did lift a few of them , but what a rhythm!!! A couple of the songs such as "Don't Touch..." are not up to the recording quality of the others, so the production is not uniform. And, among the latter tunes, we get some long jams that don't quite fit the mold of the other material. But these are minor complaints, this is smokin' this is movin.'

You like Men at Work?.......2007-01-14
I saw Colin Hay play 'Overkill' accousticly on an episode of Scrubs last year and it reminded me of some of the great work the band put out in the '80'sand early '90's. Can't say that I adore every song, but his writing skills are really solid. It's a good recording to have in a collection. Definitely one to play when everything else sounds the same.
Ghosts Appear and Fade Away.......2006-11-11
Men At Work's second, and in my opinion, best album came out in 1983. Featuring smash hits like Overkill and It's A Mistake, Colin Hay and the boys from Down Under surpass the successes from their debut, Business As Usual. Unfortunately, this would also be the last release with the original line-up. The band carried on with the follow-up Two Hearts in 1985, but it didn't gain much attention. Colin Hay has continued on as a solo artist, and often tours with Greg Ham under the Men At Work banner. Anyone's ultimate 80's music collection would not be complete with...Cargo!
Excellent effort! Very adventurous!.......2006-06-29
Before I start, I wish that Colin Hay and his band Men At Work would have been at 10 albums or so or have just as many hits as Usher, Mariah Carey, Jay-Z, or other artists have now. They were on such a roll after two albums (including Cargo), and then what happened? Maybe couldn't handle fame, the floods of fan letters or the multi platinum sales or the pandemonium of fans. But they tore it up in 1982 and 1983! Cargo doesn't match the greatness of Business at Work, but it is a solid album, with adventurous songs like Overkill, It's A Mistake, Settle Down My Boy and others. One standout is the fast paced Restriction Zone and its strumming guitars. Colin and his band make solid pop rock on every song, and the songs are hooked in your head after several listens. These fellows need to get past their bickerings, get a new album out, talk with their managers, and tear up stages once again like they did in their '80s peak. If Prince could sell out shows in 2004, why can't Men at Work? Show the public once again what made the '80s so great with the music! Maybe they won't do it now, but someday. I think that Cargo was one of the band's finest moments.
classic pop album!.......2006-05-07
Men at work' was one of those mtv saturated bands that were very very good and were very misunderstood as a good rock band!they were simple intheir format--steady drums, bass and lead guitar sparsely put with saxophone/flute and well sung music. Cargo-mAW's second album was a prime example of a pop craft masterpiece. it had comedy/tragedy/fun and whatever else without being too commercial. "overkill" is definatly a highlight but songs like "no sign of yesturday" "its a mistake"clearly show the bands political views and also another side to this fantastic bands character. its too bad that they didnt have anything comparable afterwards...but we still have the bonus songs available now in its re-release! cheers!!
Great new wave rock classic.......2006-04-19
This album is the classic example of the term SOPHOMORE SUCCESS.Cargo is a great sophomore album from the talented new wave rockers from Australia and proving that they were not merely one hit wonders.very highly recommended.Get this but avoid all albums from the awful Kylie minogue.

blink is punk.......2006-02-01
alright many people say Blink-182 is not punk and i say those people can F*** OFF. this album is punk belive me i know punk my favorite bands are Bad Religion, Sick of it All, Black Flag, G.B.H., Hatebreed, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, NOFX, and The Circle Jerks. now i will admit these guys sold out after Dude Ranch but thats okay. now this is punk-pop but sometimes it is on the edge of those two things. sometimes it even slips over to the pop side of things but most often it is punk. with songs like sometimes, touchdown boy, and does my breath smell make this album a good punk-pop album. they address some very big punk-pop issues like girls, Tv, and jacking off. all the songs are fast, funny, and just over all good. so dont give Blink-182 s*** before you have really listened to it.
"Sellouts"??? PLEASE..........2006-01-11
I have a major problem with people who think that just because someone's gotten noticed and achieved some measure of success that they're automatically a "sellout". My favorite reply to that comment is the one that just hits the complainers right in the shins like a metal pipe. "Yeah, Metallica really sold out...last night they sold out the arena and the night before that and the night before that!" Chechire Cat is just one of two independent albums that got the majors to notice this band and sign them. And there's not a thing wrong with that. If you're in a band for a living, you're not in the business to remain someone's little secret. If you are, then you've got a day job you aren't giving up. This is a bit rough by comparison to their later stuff, but that's nothing different either. You find your way and in the process, you find your groove, you get better at it, and with the years comes a little more refinement of what you do...and yes, your style evolves and changes over the years. It's natural and should be expected. This is great early stuff and a really cool look back to those days, but to refer to the band as a sellout is ridiculous. No one forced them to write the stuff that gave them some of their biggest hits. It's a nice sentiment to think "we're not doing this for the money". Nice, but misguided. We all do our jobs to pay the bills; these guys just have a great job and they obviously love what they do. If they didn't, they would've stopped ages ago.
My Favorite Punk.......2005-12-07
These are some of the best songs, perfect for summer. A very good start to an incredible band. Speed punk as I like to call it. When ever I'm pissed off I put in this album and it always takes the edge off my anger and turns me into the kid I was in my eternal summer.

Another classic in the making.......2004-10-10
I just picked up a copy of Slow Train's Illegal Cargo and without a doubt it's hottttt for this summer. Lady Z's vocals are on the button with a haunting soulful echos which captivates your entire body. Every track finds its way deep into your mind eventually exploding through your feet. I may be a bit bias on this one since Lady Z is from St.James Trinidad (West Indies). But don't just take my advice, check out any real music lover and they will tell you that THIS ONE IS FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!
ILLEGALLY YOURS!!!.......2004-06-02
I first discovered Slow Train Soul on the "Hotel Costes 6" CD--"In the Black of Night"--and decided to try them out. Slow Train Soul are the petite Lady Z and a hippie named Morten Varano, who have put together a very impressive CD. Lady Z's vocals are dark and sensual and meander across lazy, melodic riffs and funky basslines like a true veteran. Songs of note are "Slow Train", "Illegal Cargo", "Intuition", "Inna City Woman", "Trail of Dawn" and "Stoned Rays." Slow Train Soul's "Illegal Cargo" chugs along at a pace that's easy on the body and on the mind. Recommended!
Great CD.......2004-05-14
I love this album! It's so lush and complex it's hard to describe, but I'll try. I definitely hear some soul influence in the music but it's also pretty electronic in nature. it's very layered, with a variety of different textures and sounds. The production work is genius and the vocals totally hit me right where I live. This could possible be described as lounge music, although I think it's a little more evocative than that. Well, that's the best I can do, all I can say is I highly reccomend it, well done!
Just fantastic!.......2004-05-06
A British friend introduced me to Slow Train and I must say since I have purchased this CD, it has not left my CD player!
This is soulful lounge music! "Twisted Cupid" is just hypnotic! If you are a fan of Hotel Costes then you will be more that happy you invested in this CD.

"Cool! Hey, my dad's got a shovel, can I help too?".......2007-01-16
Few bands in the big surf rock revival of the 90's managed to sound as fresh and original as Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet. "Savvy Show Stoppers" features their classic "Having an Average Weekend," which was used for the theme music to "Kids in the Hall," a popular Canadian comedy show. Fans of KITH will recognize much of the music here. Come to think of it, fans of the show probably already know this. Newcomers will also find much to enjoy, as all of these quirky instrumentals are upbeat and easily accessible.
One of the Most Original Instrumental Bands.......2005-08-26
I can't say that I've ever heard a band that sounds like this one. I listen to a lot of surf music, and these guys are one of my favorites.
If you ever get the chance, you should check out The Flesh Eating Goons [...] They Have an EP out and they are working on a Full length CD right now.
"Kids in the Hall".......2002-05-03
If you ever watched the old Kids in the Hall show, the theme song was written by these guys. It's on this album known as "Having an Average Weekend". Savvy Show Stoppers is a great collection of surf guitar instrumentals all in the spirit of "Having an Average Weekend.
Orginal rhythms permeate the album, but there isn't a lot variation on the songs. They're all about the same pace. Think of this as a surf guitar jam album. It's just the band jamming away on slightly different rhythms. Somehow it doesn't detract from the album's appeal though.
Sheer perfection.......2002-04-04
If one were to take the absolute best ideas and styles of Dick Dale, Link Wray and The Ventures...add in a splash of The B-52's, Chuck Berry and The Ramones, then they would come up with the amazing sound of Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet. This album just blows me away with it's amazing style, wit, and unbelievable consistancy. There's not a single bad apple in the whole bunch. The way every song title brilliantly matches the sound and atmosphere of the music is positively stunning. (not to mention fun) This group released three wonderful albums of this caliber, but I prefer their debut slightly over the other two. This CD is not just for "surf music" fans, it is an album for anyone who simply enjoys the fun and joy of music. This album is the perfect cure for anyone who is having a bad day, and I highly recommend it to true music lovers in general. Any one of these instrumental songs speaks more words than a 1000 page novel.

Borrowing as much from UK pre-Beatles instrumental legends the Shadows as the reverb-drenched American surfmeisters of the '60s, Toronto's Shadowy Men are a tough act to duct-tape to the chair. These '90s guys keep squirming loose to add unexpected elements to their brew. Benny Goodman's "Swing, Swing, Swing" pops up in "I Know a Guy Named Larry." And "Bang Bang," the Sonny Bono tune, tellingly combines gypsy swagger and 007 intrigue with a rockabilly bridge. Like San Francisco's Mermen, this is kinda surf and kinda not. When the Shadowy Men play Brian Wilson's "In My Room," you can bet they've got a pail of water balanced over the door, just waiting for some sap to walk in. --Jud Cost

Dim the Lights, Chill the Ham.......2007-03-18
This album is a must have if you like surf.
Grab a beer and fire up the grill!.......2006-04-01
I've owned this CD for a couple of years and I don't listen to it much, but I played it a few days ago and I was immediately transported to a wooden deck by a house with a gas grill cooking burgers and I had a beer in my hand thinking about how good life it.
This kind of music just sets a kind of mood, and whatever that mood is depends on your imagination, but I'll bet you imagine something in the Summer that is fun or relaxing. I love this stuff.
Best of Surf/Indie Rock.......2005-11-29
Along with Man or Astroman?, Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet released several outstanding indie instrumental albums in the 1990s. This is their second and probably best one, and still sounds great almost 15 years later. Fans of this band should also check out 'Fresh Gasoline' by Phono-Comb.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the legendary Shadowy Men!!!.......2003-12-27
Anyone who is a fan of great Instrumental surf, lounge, or "spy" music must pick this up. This album makes great background music to conduct your own secret covert spy missions to. The performances here are one of a kind!!! You owe it to yourself to check this one out!!
A Whooping crazy happy spazzy Five Stars O' fun!.......1998-10-16
A very upbeat recording from a bunch of happenin' Canadians. A must have to add to your collections! An added bonus? Not many people know their groovy style so they are relitivly CHEEP! Also look for their (first?) one "Savvy Show Stoppers!" or try the Barenaked Ladies (Gordon) or Moxy Fruvous (Bargainville) for other upbeat canadian tunes!

Never heard of the funky soul and reggae music of Belize, that sliver of Caribbean coastline just east of Guatemala and south of Cancun? You're probably not alone, and the Belize City Boil Up compilation (the 6th this year from crate-digging music salvagers the Numero Group) is the varied and danceable introduction for the interested yet uninitiated. Soaking up influences from their Jamaican neighbors and their soulful Motown/Stax brethren from the north, these little-known groups recorded a handful of albums and singles in the 60s and 70s. The results showcase rootsy reggae (Belizean patriarchal funkster Lord Rhaburn's "More Love Reggae", The Web's "Rated G"), covers of Wilson Pickett and Johnny Nash, and some funky I-can't-believe-it's-not-sampled beats of the Harmonettes "Shame Shame Shame" and Rhaburn's "Disco Connection". Soulful standouts The Professionals (whose album covers noted their "promptness and reliability") cover both the O'Jays "Back Stabbers" and "Theme from The Godfather" - now that's a group with range! --Ben Heege
Album Description
Belizian's call it Boil Up, and it's anything but leftovers. Mix equal parts R&B, calypso, disco, funk, reggae, bruckdown, soul, folk, and whatever else can be found back on the bottom shelf of the musical pantry. Get ready to feast on passport stamped rhythms, second-deck cruise ship melodies, hotel pool calypso, soundtracks to movies not-yet-made, and anything else savory, or unsavory, enough to throw into the pot.

Sho' nuff hot.............2007-06-29
Stylistically diverse enough to encompass Latin, reggae, funk and burnin' soul, this is still tight enough to be thematic. The theme is temperature. No soft soul a la the Dells and so on. I remember the old Duke records various artists package called "Like 'Er Red Hot" (sadly never reissued on CD). That title would be pretty valid here, not that "Belize City Boil Up" misses the point.
"Can't Go Halfway" and "Shame Shame Shame" are my favorite cuts, but they have plenty of competition.
We also get here a lyrically truncated version of the O'Jays "Backstabber," just a few of the words, but no shortchange on the revved up instrumental section. And Nadia Cattouse makes a nice contribution as the lone female vocalist; here again, within the overall theme.
I love the way Numero Uno handles the cover art of their comps; nice live shots of roots musicians enjoying their craft.
a nice album.......2006-08-11
The album does not live up to the "hype". It's the kind of album you buy on vacation then go home, put it in your cd rack and never pull it out again. Don't get me wrong, it isn't bad; in fact the musicianship is very, very good. But unique it isn't.
I'd give it 15 stars...mercy........2006-01-05
I'll make this review short and sweet. Buy this album. Do it now, you're online. Neumero does it again (they're 6 for 6 so far) by unleashing one of the most awe-inspiring comps in a long time. It rivals any and all Souljazz comps, and that's saying something as they are also awesome. In fact, pick a couple of those up too.
Awe-inspiring reggae and funk from Belize.......2005-12-13
Who knew they had such a vibrant and vital music scene in Belize? Apparently the folks at Numero Group, a reissue label with a knack for unearthing piquant, previously unreleased or underheard treasures....
The soulful funk and rootsy reggae on parade here will enliven any party, shake rafters and, inevitably have your neighbors calling the cops...hard not to crank it up when it gets on the good foot like this...
Bonus: has the best version of "Theme from the Godfather" you'll ever hear!

one of the best albums of all time.......2006-10-03
I am a dj whose spun this album all over the world - and it works everywhere!
Billy Bubbles at the top of his game.......2005-05-18
I picked up this CD over ten years ago when I was still in college and I still regularly listen to it today. Moody electronica with some really fine drum work and WO's unique synthesizer palette.
His follow-up "Strange Cargo 4: Hinterland" is also excellent. All this before he got snapped up by Madonna...
For WO fans, remember this line? "You have discovered many things, but the shortcut through the labyrinth is not among them."
I finally figured out what this sampled interlude was (I think it's at the beginning of "Best Friend, Paranoia"?); it's a line spoken by the old monk in the movie "The Name of the Rose".
Third time's the charm..........2003-02-12
After two previous "Strange Cargo" albums, William Orbit finally gets it right; while the previous two were haphazard and uneven, William Orbit seems to have found the right groove with this one. The songs on this CD never get above a dull roar - they are all rather quiet and mellow, and even the more uptempo tracks inspire more of a thoughtful groove than an all-out dance.
Soft Ambience in Jeane Micheal Jarre's Style.......2001-12-29
William Orbit's music is quite melodic in contrast with other popular electronic artists who mostly focus on beat and rhythm. This is a clear indication that melody is still and fashion and will probably always be in fashion. However, Orbit's music, especially in "Strange Cargo" is too soft and tender to be truly moving- the energy of beat is lacking, albeit, the pacifying and relaxing effect is present.
True fans of electronic music must remember Jean Michael Jarre with his ground-braking synthesizer tracks and spectacular shows. William Orbit follows in his tracks and many of his sounds and overall ambient feel resemble some of the earlier Jean Michael Jarre tracks. If you are looking for more energetic, mood boosting music, you should also check out Van Dyk, Oakenfold, and maybe UltraMax Music. William Orbit have mastered the new age, and this is unquestionable. But the true dance music leads another way.
The best of the electronic master.......2001-10-06
What James Brown is to soul and Bob Dylan is to folk, William Orbit is to the electronic genre. I have found no one to match his melodic, fluid style of new age, with the energy and beat of a dance mix. No two tracks sound the same, and Strange Cargo III is the best of all his albums. Maybe that's why Madonna insisted that he produce her most successful album ever. And what a difference it made.
Orbit has taken the roots laid down by Tangerine Dream and has refined them to a point where he is both ethereal and melodic, hypnotic and awake, soothing and dance-inducing. What a talent.

An underappreciated sonic genius.......2004-12-29
I remember the first time I listened to Torch Song's records, and being completely hypnotized with the production and Laurie Mayer's haunting vocals. Orbit since then has been a favorite of many artists for production and remix work. He did some fantastic music for Joe Frank In The Dark. With this trio he creates a number of electro-chillout / spark-wired atmospheres. A lot of this could easily double as an alternate Blade Runner-type soundtrack. Highly recommended.
