After several recordings of American popular music, Te Kanawa has become a very effective crooner, phrasing with heretofore missing panache. The easy, jazzy Riddle-like arrangements are bouncy and appealing. But after 15 selections, the mysterious dissatisfaction of eating Chinese food and feeling hungry an hour later remains. Tunick writes in his program notes that "the waltz ballads ... are poignant and moving, but never stray into sentimentality." But why not? A little mushiness would serve this recording well, and also contribute to a desperately lacking variety of interpretation. Kiri's glorious voice interprets Irving Berlin masterpieces beautifully with expression and respect for these American favorites.

OK. Full disclosure: I'm one of those helpless souls who is just madly in love with the sounds that emanate from Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's vocal chords. I suppose there are many artists who can interpret Irving Berlin's songs with more, what's the word, authenticity?

And I've heard many of them, and I love their work.

But Kiri Te Kanawa is different. She was given one of the most beautiful instruments in the history of sound recordings. Thank God the recording companies figured out what they had and put her in front of a microphone early and often.

We have had a rare opportunity to experience a great artist from almost the start of her career clear through to what now must be it's final stages.

I, for one, feel privileged.

Thank you, Dame Kiri. The world is a little better place because of you.

This album exemplifies Kiri's amazing, vast dose of talent for musical interpretation. Though I tend to enjoy mostly classical music, this album has opened doors to a wonderful world of classical-jazz, which I find quite beautiful! Perhaps for some, it is an aquired taste...yet I was hooked the moment I heard track one...and have since become quite the "modern Kiri" fan!~Brava once again~

If you like Irving Berlin and Kiri Te Kanawa you'll probably enjoy this album as much as I do!

I can imagine Nick and Nora Charles listening to this at one of Nick's favorite dives! It will transport you to a sophisticated time and place that may have never existed except in literature and debutante coming out parties.

Gatsby would have loved it, and surely would have invited Kiri to all his parties!

Just terrible! Although her voice has mellowed and is quite beautiful, Ms Te Kanawa has absolutely no instinct or feel for this distinctly American music. She's just lost in her own peculiar Kiwi wonderland. She is not aided but what have to be some of the worst arrangements of this music ever recorded.

Her version of "What'll I do" alone earns her a place on the top ten list of abominable recordings of American music.

Having Previously Provided Songs for BBC Drama "Border Cafe", the Arlenes were the Only UK Act to have a Track Included on the Prestigious "Rough Guide to Americana" Compilation Released in 2001.

Don't miss this one!.......2003-03-25

At the music store recently I saw this CD and, having vaguely remembered hearing positive things about them somewhere, purchased it. Easily the best decision I made that day. Don't let the alt.country label affixed to this band turn you off. While the "twang quotient" is high, these are basically pop songs played with care and with a nod to late 60s/early 70s AM country radio. It all sounds effortless and should appeal to fans of rock, pop, C&W, and maybe even Britpop.

You could describe this as honky tonk meets Brit Pop, as the home base for The Arlenes is London. The first 5 tracks are just gorgeous, especially the shoulda-been-a-hit 'Springboard', which sounds amazingly like Glen Campbell, right from "Big Steve" Arlene's boyish tenor to the acoustic guitars. 'Tell Someone That You Love Them' is another gem that casts a lovely country rock spell before trasforming into a chiming guitar, pedal steel hoe-down. 'Lonesome Won't Leave Me Alone' is a haunting lament of depression with Stephanie Arlene unleashing her powerful voice.

Songs 6 thru 8 aren't bad, but don't really stand up to the magic that comes before. However, things pick up nicely with 'I Just Smoulder' which, as you might expect, does just that. "Everybody's Mind Gets Broke Sometimes' closes things out nicely. Each song has jangly, chiming guitars interwoven with steel guitar. Stephanie Arlene harmonizes on just about each track. Their voices wrap around each other comfortably.

This was on the top of my Best of 2002 list. It's that good.

A super budget 5 CD collection of all of Grainger's Piano music.
Every last note!
The shipping alone would be $17.00+ for the 5 individual Cds.
Englishman Martin Jones plays these as if he wrote them. He is thoroughly inside this music.
I think his best work to date.
He is joined on CD #5 by Richard Mcmahon and Phillip Martin. Where they rollick in various combos and trios on 1, 2 and 3 pianos. This is exhilerating. Especially on an truly uplifting version of Green Bushes.
The entire set is strongly idiomatic and given a clear, crisp, warm and spacious recording. FIRST CLASS sound.
There are too many highlights to single out, but the In A Nutshell Suite and Green Bushes are especially GOOD!
There is not a bad note or "vibe" on any of these CDs.
Highly recommended for Granger fans and fans of English Piano Music.

Having served mostly as a songwriter for the success of others, with an occasional single of his own getting a peak at contemporary radio play, "Stuck on You" was milked by many stations for air time. Many a "smooth jazz" station claimed Bobby as their own after the release and subsequent success of this CD, one that only the heart broken could pen. "Don't Lead Me On, Stuck on You," and "Cry" reach every emotional horizon one can reach in the pre, current, and post phases of a relationship. In "Janet" Bobby picks up the tempo a bit in singing the praises of his favorite girl of choice, and "Back To You" gives Bobby a gorgeous duet with Marilyn Scott to dress up the tail end of his album. Alto saxers Richard Elliott and Dave Koz, along with the Tower of Power band make noticeable contributions to this mood setting collection of what many now consider Caldwell classics. They say females are more taken to singers (or men?) who are more sensative and capable of pouring out their emotions. Given the make-up and response of the audience I saw at Bobby's show on the "Stuck On You" tour, in Joliet Il., I would have to say that there is some substance to that claim. More than one person I know became instant Bobby Caldwell fans after one listen of "Stuck On You". It's a very fulfilling album with enough depth to listen to it from beginning to end. Caldwell's emphasis is more on songwriting and singing - his obvious and well regarded strengths- than any extravagent keyboards, though anyone familiar with Bobby never really expects anything beyond that anyway. Bobby has made several good CDs since, but none of them were able to live up the the standard "Stuck on You" set. While some light music stations dug into this album, it's more in the contemporary jazz category

I love the song, they really have changed over the years. "Brotherhood" was great, and I've heard most of "Identity" it's even better. "Detour" needs to be the next single... *hint hint* :)

Excellent remake for today's style.......2004-05-25

I heard this awesome remake of Lionel Richie's song while in Tahiti. The guys harmonize very well together, and gives this slow song a little upbeat tempo w/ reggae/R&B flavor. A must have for fans of 3T or this song!
