Album Description

If you want to do justice to the significance of prog metal act Vanden Plas from Kaiserslautern, it doesn't really make sense to restrict yourself to their accomplishments in Germany alone. The band surrounding vocalist Andreas Kuntz have succeeded in making a name for themselves on an international level, enjoy almost cult status in France, have been touring all over Europe with established acts like Dream Theater, Savatage and Angra and can point to a number of impressive releases, among them four studio albums, a live cut, an unplugged recording, and several EPs. With their latest offering, Vanden Plas once again emphasise their leading position on the international prog scene, opening an exciting new chapter in their band history. Christ.0 contains nine brand-new prog metal tracks which stand out with their brilliant melodies, exquisite instrumental passages and intelligent arrangements. Their fifth studio work is a concept piece witch is inspired by Alexandre Dumas novel The Count of Monte Cristo.

5 out of 5 stars An Epic, Grandiose Masterpiece.......2007-07-19

Simply put, this is one of the greatest albums I have ever heard. I put it in the same class as Images and Words, Enigmatic: Calling (Pagan's Mind), and The 1st Chapter (Circus Maximus). Morose, powerful, dramatic, melodic, beautiful, emotional, and just plain good. The highlight piece of the album is undoubtedly "January Sun," a 10 minute epic pulled off with unrivalled class. Overall, one of the best albums in my (or any) collection, and a must-have for any progressive metal fan.

5 out of 5 stars Top of the Line for Progressive Concept Albums!.......2007-05-25

I bought this cd because I was looking for concept albums after getting into the genre through Coheed & Cambria. Although this album is nothing like that band, like CoCa, Vanden Plas has some incredible keyboard and guitar riffs straight from heaven! Don't miss "Silently", easily one of the most complex songs I have ever heard in this genre. The lyrics are incredibly intelligent, based (sorta) on the story of the Count of Monte Christo. This cd hasn't left my cd player for a full year, it has only been outlasted by Beyond the Veil from Tristania (different genre, but just as intelligent.) My favorite song on this cd is easily "Fireroses Dance", it has everything from a slower, epic beginning to angry choruses. If you are looking for a cd with meaning and killer composition, don't pass this up!

5 out of 5 stars Album of the Year.......2007-05-13

No need to write much more than "It's a progressive/power metal masterpiece!" Get it! It doesn't come much better...

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Truly a work of art, passion and musicianship.......2007-03-06

In my opinion, Vanden Plas has broken out with this amazing album. The Vocal work is simply astonishing, the richly woven harmonies, and Andy Kuntzs intense delivery never ceases to amaze me.

While I have always enjoyed Vanden Plas, some of there work left me with little of that feeling where it wouldn't stop playing inside your head after you shut off your sound system. Christ 0 does just the opposite. It never stops playing in my head. Been in my rotation for over a year now, and I never stop craving certain parts of it.

The playing is simply a complete virtuoso performance by the whole band. You can tell that each piece that highlights bass, drums, keys or guitar, was done on purpose as part of the overall tapestry that is this album. No shredding for noises sake, it all fits together perfectly. You can tell these guys have been playing together for a long time.

Christ 0 cements Vanden Plas unique style into place for me at least. They have showed their influences liberally in some of their earlier works, but this album is pure them.

All I can say in conclusion, is that if you like this type of music, this is one of the most memorable releases in recent years. For those who like band comparisons, this is as amazing as Kamelot's Black Halo or Pagan's Mind Enigmatic Calling. Stupendous!!!

5 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome..!.......2006-10-01

If you ever want a group that plays some awesome Progressive Metal this is the one. I discovered them about 6 months ago and own every album they produced. Simply Amazing.! Me being a avid Dream Theater fan, this album deserves 2nd ranking..! Unbelievable..!

5 out of 5 stars Justheppy review of The Party soundtrack.......2007-06-27

I must apologise because I don't have the CD with me right now, so I won't try to describe each song, etc. What I will say is that I have played the CD a couple of times and have enjoyed it from the start. Apart from this, I have seen the film countless of times and am a very big fan of it, to say the least! I simply had to purchase the soundtrack for its 60's style music ('The Party' and its cool jazz pieces, etc.) - They just don't make music like this anymore! So, YES, I absolutely recommend this soundtrack. Yeah, I can even say that, in my opinion, it's a very well mastered and arranged CD, etc. So, definitely go for it.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD, excellent all the way!!.......2002-10-15

I bought this cd at Amazon.co.uk (before it was available here), 'cos I've always been a big fan of Mancini's music, and of Blake Edwards' and Peter Sellers' 1960's movies, in fact I love Sellers' screen persona. This album was a must have for me, it was a matter of buying it or buying it. Only regret, it does not include Claudine Longet's original vocal version for "Nothing To Lose", but anyway it's just great. If you like this cd, I recommend to you, both: "Pink Panther" and "Breakfast at Tiffany's" soundtracks, plus "Martinis with Mancini".

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Vanden Plas album.......2005-06-26

For those who do not know, Vanden Plas is a German progressive metal band, and a damn good one.

The album features a nice tight guitar sound from Stephan Lill. Andreas Lill adds some damn fine drumming. Of course the vocals are top notch as expected from Andy Kuntz.

This album is not as melodic as "Beyond Daylight" or "The God Thing", it has a more aggressive sound which I like.

When I first got this album, it didnt leave my player for like 3 weeks, and to this day I still spin this CD on a regular basis.

If you like heavy prog metal, this album is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars 2 great albums for the price of one!.......2004-02-29

The band hit the scene in 1994, and the influence of Dream Theater's landmark Images and Words album is strongly felt on their debut album. First albums can sometimes be weak, as the band usually has to work at developing a signature sound, but Colour Temple may just be the band's best album. It is tight, focused, melodic metal with lots of keyboards and progressive elements. It's not quite what I would call heavy, but it's definitely metal. Picture Dokken's Back for the Attack album with prominent keyboards and smarter lyrics. Singer Andy Kuntz's vocals are unique, and definitely play a big part in Vanden Plas's signature sound. Colour Temple is a great album from start to finish, and an excellent place to start if you are unfamiliar with the band. This edition is a super deal, because it also features the band's stunning acoustic album Accult (which I've reviewed separately). Fans of progressive metal can't go wrong here.

4 out of 5 stars Good Dokken-inspired metal!.......2002-06-14

If you only know Vanden Plas from their latter output like 1997's The God Thing or 1999's Far Off Grace, you know that Vanden Plas mixes elements of 80s hard rock along the lines of Dokken or Van Halen with 90s progressive metal like Dream Theater. In fact, post-Colour Temple Vanden Plas is a lot like Dream Theater in many aspects. Though some people think Vanden Plas has too many resemblances to Dream Theater, if you go back and listen to Vanden Plas' first full-length CD Colour Temple, you may get a better idea of where Vanden Plas came from and how they evolved into the band that created The God Thing, Far Off Grace and 2002's Beyond Daylight. I'm not saying it will dismiss the Dream Theater comparisons, but what it will do is give you a better idea of Vanden Plas' other influences. They aren't just a Dream Theater clone. There was (and still is) another side to this talented band.

1. "Father" - A strong opener, "Father" showcases Vanden Plas' ability to write catchy vocal melodies and dynamic guitar riffs.
2. "Push" - This is an awesome, fast-paced rocker! Stephen Lill's guitar style screams George Lynch and the vocal melodies are very much in a Dokken vein while the keyboards add depth.
3. "When the Wind Blows" - This good track has one of those classic Dokken openings that builds and builds. The main riff reminds me of Queensryche, but overall, Dokken seems to be the main influence here.
4. "My Crying" - A good rocker that relies on engaging vocal melodies and strong guitar work, "My Crying" recalls 80s hard rock without repeating it thanks in part to the keyboards. 5. "Soul Survives" - Though this track starts off as a ballad, the song shifts gears and explodes into a mid-paced rocker. The keyboard carries this song throughout. A decent song.
6. "Anytime" - "Anytime" is a ballad that combines loss, loneliness and pain without coming off as being corny or sappy like many ballads did during the 80s. This is a very good song that has a blues quality to it.
7. "Judas" - Maybe I'm making too many Dokken comparisons but, damn, Vanden Plas is writing better Dokken songs than Dokken is now! And this rocker is no exception. The guitar riffs sound like something George Lynch could of come up with and the vocal melodies scream Dokken as well. This track is one of the best on the album.
8. "Back to Me" - "Back to Me" sounds like it's straight from the 80s hard rock/pop metal scene with its edgy verses and soaring chorus. The prominent progressive keyboards do give the song a little something extra that keeps it from being totally 80s. Great song that includes some fabulous riffs!
9. "How Many Tears" - Though it is pretty much a ballad, "How Many Tears" does contain an undercurrent of urgency that eventually leads the song into a heavier area while still remaining a ballad and showcases Vanden Plas' ability to convey a variety of moods through their music.

Colour Temple is a wonderfully fun album full of melody, power and exceptional song craft. On Colour Temple it is clear that the German rockers were influenced by Dokken and Van Halen in the beginning. The strong Dream Theater influences had yet to be added to Vanden Plas' song writing repertoire, but that does not make Colour Temple a lesser album, not at all. If you like 80s hard rock with a slightly progressive feel, you may really like Colour Temple.

5 out of 5 stars music review.......2006-11-10

All I have to say after buying this album I am a vanden plas fan. This is a great album and I recommend it to any progressive metal fan!

5 out of 5 stars Prog tour de force.......2006-11-03

If you are interested in Vanden Plas, I assume you are a prog metal fan. If that is the case, you will not be dissapointed in this CD. There are definitely elements of DT when you listen to this band, but they have their own musical sensibilities as well. There is no shortage of crunching guitar licks and pyro-technics, but not at the expense of good lyrics and solid song writing. One thing not often associated with prog metals is great vocal harmonies, but you will definitely find those here as well. Andy Kuntz has a great voice, and the backing vocals are rock-solid as well. The group has been around since 1986, and unfortunately they escaped my radar screen until a few years ago. Although I do not own all of Vanden Plas' CDs, I have not heard anything from this group that I did not like. If you are prog fan you should definitely own this CD.

5 out of 5 stars i agree- SUPERB!!!.......2005-06-01

This is a must own for prog fans- if you like (older) Dream Theater- this is a great freakin CD- I can listen to this over and over!!!! Keep it comin PLAS!!!

5 out of 5 stars Very Surprised.......2005-02-12

I picked this up on a whim on hearing some samples and I absolutely love this cd. There's just something about it that I can't put my finger on, but it's definitely got that progressive feel going on. Each song is exceptional, my favorite being, 'Can You Hear me'. The End of All Days and Scarlet Flower Fields are great too. Over the top. On a sidenote, Andy's voice almost reminds me of John Schillt's voice of the Christian rock group, Petra. But only the voice because there's no comparing the two musically. And make sure you check out Andy's side project. Abydos.

5 out of 5 stars Superb prog........2002-12-12

I wasn't sure what to expect from this band, my only previous encounter was with the very talented keyboardist (Gunter Werno) on DC Cooper's (fantastic) solo release. But fans of prog have been positive about this lot, so I went for it.
And they're very good. VERY good. Remind me in some ways of "Images" era Dream Theater as far as song construction and instrumental sections go. The guitarist is very good, he can shred along with the best on 'em, although he's just a bit more restrained than Mr Petrucci - this band like instrumental passages to be just that, rather than a collection of solos. The drummer is also extremely good, but more restrained than Mike Portnoy, something I appreciate (Dream Theater over-use the double bass drums IMHO).

And the vocalist. Other reviews of past releases by Vanden Plas have been critical of the vocals. I can see why, he doesn't have the most powerful voice in prog, it's quite clean (cleaner than James LaBrie), and certainly not from the "Geoff Tate" school of singers. He does use his diaphragm well in places, and also occasionally throws in a rasp that's not a million miles away from Vince Neil (Motley Crue)! He can reach the high notes, and choruses tend to be constructed of layered vocals and harmonies, which more than compensated for the slight thin-ness that higher notes produces. And no screaming.

One thing worth mentioning is the strength of the song-writing. The choruses have good, memorable hooks, and satisfy the ear in a way that quite a few other prog releases fail to, despite the skills of the band.

Basically these guys have the lot, and the production more than makes up for any star losses I might have imposed for the vocals. Dunno about pervious material, but this ROCKS!

4 out of 5 stars Nice dark soundtrack in 1940s setting.......2000-10-15

In The Public Eye photographer Leon Bernstein or the Great Berzini is always the first at crime scenes in New York to shoot some pictures for the main newspapers. Filmed in a 1940s setting, Mark Isham uses a dark but beautiful melody, played mostly by piano, in this film. Strings and trumpet play also a major role. Isham knows exactly how to create the feeling for the "dark brown" New York in the 1940s with the Italian mob chasing each other and the jazzy pubs where the sigar smoking high society meets each other.

These guys are just fantastic. They keep exploring new depths. THis is an older album that they have, but it is still fresh, and never dull.

Everytime I want to get into a new state of mind, I put these guys on. This album just digs in and never lets up. There is no bombast, playing for technical sake, great vocals, clear crisp themes, and excellent playing.

In You I Believe is exemplary of the whole collection, fast, pumping, crisp, with great teamwork amongst all the players. No personal showmanship

Long live Vanden Plan

5 out of 5 stars PROGRESSIVE METAL AT ITS FINEST..!!! IT WILL BLOW YOU AWAY........2003-04-13

I have all there CD's, and "The God Thing" Has to be Vanden Plas best CD to date. With "Beyond Daylight" a close second. You get everything with this CD. Thick guitar sound, great riffs, piano, great vocals, lots of changes, and great bass lines... I wouldn't change anything about this CD. If you like Dream Theater.. You will love Vanden Plas. I think "The God Thing" is the best choice for first time listeners. The more you listen to this CD.. The more you like it. "The God Thing" will be a great addition to your music collection. Believe me.. This CD will not leave your CD player.

5 out of 5 stars Best of 97.......2002-02-07

What an eye opener! I've been a huge Dream Theater fan since 92, but this album (released the same year as DT's weaker release "Falling Into Infinity") caught me as my interest in them was beginning to wane. Germans Vanden Plas are SUPERBLY tight on this melodic/power/progressive rock masterpiece. "Garden of Stones" and "You Fly" showcase tremendously thick guitar tones. Listen to the amazing build up in the former and the the tremendous guitar harmonies in the latter. Oh my! I was in heaven. A similar intensity builds in "Crown Of Thorns" while the guitar line of "Salt In My Wounds" is just pulverizing. Kudos also to the magnificent bass player; check out the opening track of the disc. Wow! Very interesting, probing lyrics and nice artwork. But again, the proof in this pudding is in the *hearing*. Easily one of the best power/prog-metal releases EVER. An essential recording.

5 out of 5 stars IT definatly worth the money!.......2000-09-23

The God Thing, was possibly the best album released in 97. This album is a definite step in the right direction for the VP. It shows hints from the previous releases but breaks new progressive ground. Unlike Colour Temple, where Stephan and Andy are the definite stand outs, with this release we realize the amazing talents of Torsten Gunter and Andreas. The amazing musicianship of all the members shines through with utter brilliance and proves without a doubt that Vanden Plas is here to stay. Rating: 9.6. ...

4 out of 5 stars Vanden Plas - The God Thing: A Dream Theater Clone?.......2000-05-16

After hearing the God Thing for the first time, I'm reminded strongly of Dream Theater. The keyboards, drums and guitar have strong similarities to Dream Theater (think Images & Words or Awake).

But after subsequent listens, other similarities stand out on this excellent cd. I find that the guitar actually reminds me of Dokken and Conception just as much as it does Dream Theater. The vocals remind me of Conception, too. Though Vanden Plas's vocalist has a higher range than does Roy S. Khan of Conception, they both have similar voices. The music is strong and powerful and Vanden Plas concentrates on writing great songs rather than self-indulgent technical silliness. This is where Vanden Plas has the potential to be superior to Dream Theater, they (Vanden Plas) know what music is about.

Progressive metal is about musical innovation, not technical masturbation.

If you like Dream Theater and Conception, I think you may like Vanden Plas.

    4 out of 5 stars Sonds like a great rock-progressive concert..........2001-01-29

Recorded in Paris, France in Feb 2000. This band can rock... progressively. In the likes of Dream Theater, long & manipulating songs (5 songs that are over 8 minutes in length), and a sound that is powerful - with emphasis on intricate song structure. Andy Kuntz sings wonderfully and sounds like he has been classically trained. Gunter Werno (keyboards) is spiritually uplifting with his new song "Journey To Paris" leading into the heavy "Spirit Of Life". The other great oldie-but-goodie is "Into The Sun". Stephan Lill reeks havoc on guitar and in my opinion he's the glue that holds this band together... not to mention Andreas Lill on drums. If you can get past some of the French singing on one or two of the songs and Kuntz talking to the audience from time to time in French, you will love this album. Very good sound production for a live show. This sounds like a great rocking progressive concert... I wish I had been there to see & hear it.

    3 out of 5 stars Real enjoyable.......2006-03-13

It' not always easy to find a "swinging" Sax/Organ Combo anymore. This one certainly fits the bill.I didn't realize Plas Johnson was still around.

5 out of 5 stars Back to the tenor battles.......2002-03-10

A fine session with two of the greatest jazz sax players. They are supported by a swinging rhythm section. It is good to hear again Gene Ludwig after all these years. To me, Red Holloway's Serenade in blue is a gem.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2001-11-30

Just picked up this wonderful disc.

It's a feast for sore ears.

Two magnificent tenor men, Gene Ludwig on B3 (bass), Melvin Sparks - guitar, Kenny
Washington - drums. No string bass of any type - shucks. And the other half of the
genius is delivered by Rudy Van Gelder - who - oh, man - can't even begin to describe
his greatness. If he recorded it - it's at least half good. The mountain came to
Mohammed because, as usual - the musicians wound up in Englewood, NJ - formerly
Monk's Hackensack, to record where Rudy Van Gelder has been ruling for many
    years.

If you can hear "Serenade In Blue" from this disc and not get chills, you're just not
warm enough. "Cry Me A River" will dehydrate you. Beautiful playing, arranging and
    unreal recording.

    Thank you, guys.
