Customer Reviews:
Enhanced Disco Classic.......2007-07-12
Now enhanced by extra tracks, Love For Sale is a really excellent album of 1970s dance/pop music. Besides the two massive hits: the dramatic story song Ma Baker and the hypnotic pulsating Belfast, it also contains other gems like the evocative Plantation Boy with its wistful lyrics and compelling reggae beat, a good enough version of CCR's Have You Ever Seen The Rain? and the title track Love For Sale.
Eurodisco was the sound ruling the airwaves and the dancefloors in 1977 and 1978. Although it gathered a lot of flack from music critics back then, Love For Sale's not a bad album at all whether you look at it from a pop or dance perspective. Unlike today's techno music, these tuneful songs provide sheer listening pleasure while at the same time being the perfect party music. It has also aged surprisingly well, anytime as good as the music of Abba!

Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.

Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12
This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

delightful studio "Oliver!".......2007-04-28
This is the 1962 London studio cast recording of Lionel Bart's OLIVER! The recording--featuring several famous British celebs--is a fantastic rendition of the score.
Alma Cogan, a famed British songstress, plays the role of Nancy; and the part fits her voice like a glove. Dynamic with "It's a Fine Life" and "I'd Do Anything", she also tugs at the heartstrings with a chill-inducing "As Long As He Needs Me". Ms Cogan could--and should--have been one of the leading singers on the world stage, had she not died of ovarian cancer at the age of 36.
Stanley Holloway, star of the Broadway, London and film incarnations of "My Fair Lady", plays the villainous rogue Fagin. He delivers a comic and sly performance with such numbers as "Be Back Soon", and "Reviewing the Situation".
Playing the title role, Denis Waterman sings a tender "Where is Love?". Tony Tanner ably-delivers as The Artful Dodger with a lusty "Consider Yourself". This recording also features the fondly-remembered character actress Violet Carson (who played Ena Sharples on long-running British soap "Coronation Street"), in the role of vile Widow Corney.
On the whole, this rendition of OLIVER! features enough top-drawer talents to help ensure it becomes an often-played title in your collection. Snap it up today!

Early Cecil for Sale.......2004-05-11
"Love for Sale" was an early Cecil Taylor studio album recorded in 1959, though not released on CD until Blue Note's reissue of 1998. The date finds Cecil in transition -- first playing three Cole Porter tunes (the first three tracks) with a trio that includes Buell Neidlinger (bass) and Dennis Charles (drums) -- though mysteriously, previous LP releases credit Chris White and Rudy Collins as the sidemen. Although Cecil was still deeply rooted in the post-bop tradition at this point of his career, he nonetheless deconstructs the three standards with characteristic dissonant chords and free explorations well beyond the melody. However, he does actually play the melody and hadn't yet taken off into the maniacally fast, structured chaos that would become his signature style after the 70's. The tunes are therefore quite accessible as Cecil goes, though clearly something vastly different and 'avant garde' (and therefore potentially difficult to absorb) compared to say, contemporary at the time Bill Evans. The latter three tracks are Cecil originals, but add Ted Curson (trumpet) and Bill Barron (tenor sax) to the trio line-up. The result is that despite the original Taylor compositions, the horns play fairly restrained choruses and solos that again keep the music (and Cecil as accompaniest) rooted in melody, hard bop, and tradition. In the middle of this studio date, Cecil abandoned the piano-bass-drums trio format for the next two decades in favor of at least one horn (usually saxophonist Jimmy Lyons until his death) -- this is therefore one of the last chances to hear Cecil in standard trio format for quite some time. It's a good album, but kind of a mixed bag given the shift between the two different group formats -- worth having if you're a fan of Cecil's early departures, but only after you've listened to "Jazz Advance," "Looking Ahead!," and "Coltrane Time" and are hungry for more.
Early Cecil Taylor.......2003-01-14
"Love For Sale" is easily one of the most accesible Cecil Taylor albums extant and is perhaps the best starting off point to the understanding of Mr. Taylor's music(with Monk much in evidence as a source, as well as the influence of the much earlier "stride" pianists as well). The fact that a number of the cuts on this Lp are well known standards allows the listener to more easily follow Mr. Taylor's improvisations, thus giving a map and a primer for the music to come.

Sad, sad, sad.......2003-05-11
Ok. I haven't bought this CD, but I've listened to samples and, well, as my title says..........
I would suggest buying the actual movie soundtrack instead. I've seen that movie so many times, it unbelievable. And it sounds good.
Not bad, but not the best!.......2001-01-13
My high school is performing Oliver this year. To familiarize myself with the score I purchased all of the Oliver CDs I could find. I came across this one on Amazon.com. The score is brilliantly recorded by the National Symphony Orchestra of England. I wish I could say the same about the vocals. Julian Forsyth does a fine job in the role of Fagin, but Josephine Barstow, who is about 25 years too old for the part, does an amiable job as Nancy. She sounds OK, but she is just not believable, her voice is weak at some points. Richard Van Allan, who plays the villain Bill Sykes, is also just OK. He is trained as an opera singer, and it shows. You don't really hear him being mean or scary on this CD. Both Oliver and Dodger, on this CD, are what takes the ratings down. Both of them cannot carry a tune in a bucket. Also, Dodger sounds like he is twenty years old. It is scary. On top of all this, the numbering of the tracks on the back of the CD are one off for each track, so beware! But don't let me discourage you. This CD is still a pretty complete recording. If you enjoy Oliver go for it!

Cabaret-Goth.......2002-09-10
Gitane is an excellent artist with incomparable range. She's done goth, she's done glam, she's done punk.
This release is an excellent live collection from when she was doing jazz cabaret in Europe and includes her own renditions of popular tunes from the classic era of jazz and blues.
A SPORADIC COMPILATION, BUT STILL DELIGHTFUL.......2001-08-24
I completely disagree with the previous review. I have been a fan of Gitane's for may years, and I am always delighted to hear her amazing voice come through my stereo speakers. It's true that this somewhat sporadic compilation appealls mostly to fans familiar with her large amount of work as an artist. Obviously this will NOT appeal to your average run of the mill goth fan expecting a rehash of Christian Death songs. (see previous review)...This cd also proves that Gitane takes chances experimenting with new musical styles, and isnt that what good, original music is all about??!

pure jazz.......2003-12-09
This live recording covers 6 instrumental pieces across the pop/jazz spectrum , brought to life by Benson and his ensemble. The album showcases each player (unfortunately no details provided on the cd) going through their paces, from the smoking jazz/blues of Miles Davis' "All Blues" to the lush cool jazz of "Li'l Darlin".
With each number running at least 10 minutes in playing time, the ensemble has time to explore the subtleties of each melody and evoke moods not apparent under standard arrrangements.

Jazz Pianist Extraordinaire!.......2002-11-22
Regardless of tempo, this guy always swings hard! The title song alone is worth the price of the cd. Since I've heard him play it in concerts twice, I can only conclude it's his favorite.....certainly THE definitive jazz trio arrangement and a masterpiece for Derek.
The rest of the album consists of 6 more standards and 2 originals....all of them swing.
My personal favorites, other than the title cut, are "A Day In The Life Of A Fool" and "Sweet Lorraine" which is a nice trio workout.
If you like good jazz piano, you'll dig the offerings of Derek Smith, a pianist whose own style may have been influenced by Oscar Peterson.
PROGRESSIVE JAZZ TRIO WITH SOPHISTICATED PIANO PLAYER.......1998-06-25
After searching my music collection for my very favorite albums, I tried to locate the same artists at [Amazon.Com]. As many are, one favorite was from the short lived "Quad" days. Derek Smith put together a "Project 3" vinyl album (Don't Let Go) which was produced by Enoch Light in 1976. "Love for Sale" was his lead off tune on that album, too, but of the seven standard tunes on that album, I liked three others better. Okay [Amazon.Com], will we be getting any of those wonderful albums from that era?
This 1989 album is a trio played in progressive jazz fashion. Derek Smith plays the piano with beautiful feeling - swells, dreamy, slow (sometimes fast), time to enjoy, trading lead with the string bass as well as interludes with the drums. He's had a lot of experience in different styles and settings playing with Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Watrous, Benny Goodman, Dianne Warwicke, and Burt Bacharach. All nine tracks are standard tunes. I especially liked Autumn Leaves (Track 2), Summertime (Track 3), When Sunny Get Blue (Track 5), Tristessa (Track 6), and A Day in the Life of a Fool (Track 9). No where as good as his 1976 album but he had more instruments and voices to work with on that project.
