Live, rough and raw.......1999-01-18

I saw Otis live in New Orleans in 1966. This album comes close to that "live" experience. It was recorded with Otis's "road band". It is live, rough and raw. And you can hear his down-to-earth friendliness shine through. Not a "must-have, but it is a "must hear"!

Album Description

Full Title - The Columbia Albums Of Irving Berlin Vols. 1 & 2. Composer, conductor, arranger Frank DeVol scored more than fifty movies and is best known as the composer for the theme songs for the TV series 'My Three Sons', 'The Brady Bunch' and 'Family Affair'. In the 1940s DeVol was an arranger for Dinah Shore, Tony Bennett, Rudy Vallee, Vic Damone and Doris Day. Frank DeVol received multiple Emmy Awards and Academy Award nominations for his extensive body of work. Irving Berlin's medleys featured are 'Always/Remember', 'A Pretty Girl/Isn't It A Lovely Day' and 'Say It With Music/Cheek To Cheek'. 24 tracks. Collectables 2003.

This is a shame and a sin that this is not available in U.S........2003-09-08

This is Live, raw Otis at his best. These are the takes that didn't make it onto the first Live Volume - also inexplicably unavailable in the U.S. The band is loose - no Steve Cropper tight arrangements here - this was Otis the way he liked it: lots of banter with the audience and even mock shock at the responses it evoked. This audience was INTO it. "Chained and Bound", "Old Man Trouble", and lots more from this gem of an unissued second. I have the promo LP, it was never issued. One letdown...this CD cut one of my favorite tunes - "Destiny", which opened up the LP I have, but they kept "Hard Day's Night", which is really rough...so rough in fact that Otis doesn't know the words and makes some up as he goes! No matter, that's what it was all about. As Otis says in one of his moments of reveling, "..just take your shoes on off! Relax! Get soulful, you know? Just hollar loud as you wantta, stomp hard as you wantta, and we'll get into a thing, you know?! What a piece of History. This is a real find.

Top tracks you'll enjoy? Track 2 FEEL WHAT YOU KNOW (Kerri Chandler Mix). Listen also for the sass in the voice, "feelin good y'all" on track 10, MUSIC IS MY LIFE (Naked Music Classic Vocal) by Nikki St. Nicolas. Punctuated by a pulsating rhythm, Nikki will uplift you. But just when you thought he was done with you, Julius does it again dropping the Just Right Dub of MUSIC IS MY LIFE.

Another beautiful, beautiful track, #3, DISCOMYSTIK (Excursion Mix) by Julius Papp and Dave Warren. Go Deep Vol. 2 is a Jazz House Slam Dunk!

Too ecletic for a smooth continuous listen.......2000-05-07

this is simply too ecletic for my tastes. It starts off with Way we Used to by Cevin Fisher, and portions of this song weave throughout the mix to good effect. This is a good start, and the following track Feel What You Know is good soulful house. Track 3 is another solid selection, with guitar weaving throughout the beat. Track 4 veers off course with a grating male voice wailing, and Track 5 So Far Away, while initally pleasant veers off into high-pitch wonker teritory. The next few tracks feature not really "deep" house with latin percussion or harmonica jamming, before dropping to the generic diva-whaling Music is My Life. It ends on a good note with the last track, but getting to it isn't worth it.

Overall this disc may work if you want to dance, but as casual listening, it doesn't work for me- it maintains no theme or groove you can lock in to.

wide variety of influences - acid jazz, latin - all smoothly blended with a house beat. this recording has a lot of atmosphere, a lot of soul and will make you dance! highly recommended. the best cd of the year so far (2000)
