I remember the first time I heard this album and I'm still to this day blown away by it. I love this album.

5 out of 5 stars This is Richard Humpty's Crown Jewel.......2005-01-29

This CD truly captures the Hard House era at its peak. So many good memories and feelings resonate everytime I hear this CD. I am so happy to have lived that time. The time was short, but well remembered!!!!!!! Who would have thought that Hip Hop would take over like it did? Bravo Richard Humpty Vission

This is a Great CD to Dance your A** OFF!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good, But Not 5 Stars Good.......2004-02-09

Richard Humpty Vission is definitely a good DJ, one of the most energetic I've ever seen mix live. This CD has been one of my favorites ever since it was released back in '97, but this disc proves house has different meanings for different people. The disc is divided into two parts, one providing hard house beats, the other delivering a vocal house vibe. The vocal house is fun, but a little harder to dance to (and at times a little embarrasing to bump in your car). The hard house portion is the true highlight of the CD. If you're into hard house, this CD is a staple as it provides a musical wall, with Vission quick mixing almost 30 songs in his own unique style. If you're into vocal house, the second half might be to your liking, but will no doubt seem slow to hard house fans.

4 out of 5 stars Well... so, so.......2005-05-03

I'm from the Bronx durring those days when all this music was hot. What they did to planet rock... they should have just left it alone. It's a few remixes. But, I guess it's good for the price. If they ask for any more than this... don't make a fool out of yourself:C(

3 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware.......2004-08-21

Looking at the tracks of this 80's Electro CD, you'd think you were holding gold in your hand, but be aware some of the tracks are really fool's gold. In other words, three of the 14 songs are NOT by the original artists, even though the liner card lists the original artists for the orginal songs. The bogus cuts are: Jam On It, Body Mechanic, and a shameless attempt to pass off Planet Rock as the real thing.

Having said that, the other tracks are legit, including some hard to find tracks like the ET Boogie. Also, on their behalf, they do give you the full 12" versions.

This could have been a great CD of hard to find 80's classics all one one CD, but considering a full 20 per cent of this CD is bogus, Pass

Amazon.com's Best of 1998

Stephen Gardner, onetime member of indie-pop group Lorelei, took electronica to new heights with his Chessie imprint by refining drum & bass. Inspired by the rhythms of trains, Signal Series is thoroughly unique: breakbeats mingle with guitars; tracks waver between ambient, dance, and postrock; and the train theme seems to somehow unify everything. It's a thoroughly listenable disc, and one of 1998's best. Sure, we've heard these sounds before, but never so intelligently assembled. --Jason Verlinde

Amazon.com

To classify the sounds on Chessie's debut album, Signal Series, as simply drum & bass just doesn't do the disc justice. Stephen Gardner--Chessie mastermind and onetime member of indie rockers Lorelei--turns electric guitar, loops, and bass into something truly unique, a ride. Inspired by the rhythms of trains, Signal Series is 10 cuts of atmospheric samples, dub-influenced bass lines, and guitar on top of furious breakbeats that seemingly can't stop moving forward. "Clear Cut" is a locomotive going over a wooden bridge--danceable yet rickety; on "At Grade" the pace slows down, the bass gets deeper, and you can't help feeling that your machine is strained. On "Tourist Union #63" the beats fade out, and you're suddenly in a tunnel. As concepts go, the train theme is so subtle, you may not even notice it. But once you do, you can't help getting aboard. Easily one of 1998's best electronica discs. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Postrock meets drum & bass.......2000-01-03

Chessie lies in the grey area shared by Third Eye Foundation (circa Ghost). It is neither drum & bass nor rock but rather a hybrid of the two. Equal parts TEF, Bowery Electric and My Bloody Valentine (sans vocals), Signal Series is a subtle, wonderful album full of off-kilter loops (often two drum loops at different speeds), bent samples and bass and guitar.

1 out of 5 stars Other people have done this better earlier........1999-05-05

Take some Richard D James,Squerepusher and some of those classic elements that allmost all electronic music of today has got.Blend it together and this is what you get.

4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff, Very Organic, Grows On Ya.......1999-02-07

at first, I was a bit put off by the relatively lo-fi sound. then I was a bit put off because except for track 6 "at grade" I really didn't make too much of the connection between songs and rail events. by the end of the album and after a few more listens, it had begun to grow on me. I very much like the organic lo-fi feel (though I wouldn't be adverse to slightly more distinct mixes). the sense of life, of a living hand in the works is very reassuring. these are real songs and the guitar and bass are nice, one cut reminds me very much of Tortoise (in a very good way), and I had to laugh at recognizing the loop from Reich's "drumming." I think the 2 reviews I read previous to hearing the album mis-represented it to a certain degree, but I'm quite happy to own Signal Series. (oh yeah, the b/w photo on the inner sleeve is awesome.)

The second release by Chessie's Stephen Gardner is an eclectic, enervating, and subtle affair that deftly avoids the sophomore slump. Gardner is a forerunner in the trend to reapproach electronic music in a hands-on, sequencer-free way--with more than a nod to forward-thinking composers such as Steve Reich and Luc Ferrari--creating layers of scrappy rhythms and paranormal electronics. The songs on Meet are centered around 4-track tape loops with live bass playing on top; and while they are created in an old-school way, the music avoids the overt-homage-with-beats trap (with the exception of a well-meaning work that quotes Satie). Happy "train wreck" accidents abound; the beats (which may be heavy at times but rarely are the focal point) are heavily syncopated and the music has an organic cadence and vibe. One could reference Autechre, Aphex Twin, and Squarepusher in terms of the mildly difficult terrain that the sounds inhabit. But Chessie's bedroom postjungle is closer to the free-spirited-yet-grounded work of To Rococo Rot and Mice Parade, with enough of a distinctive auteur sensibility to deserve repeated headphone scrutiny. --Mike McGonigal

One of the thrilling dimensions of folk music in the '90s is the imaginative freedom its core figure, the singer with his guitar, has found. Michael Fracasso takes the lessons of his influences--the lyrical density of Dylan and the vocal flights of Buddy Holly and Lefty Frizzell--and shapes them with ambitious, Beatlesque arrangements. Much of the success of Fracasso's third recording owes to producer Charlie Sexton, who layers these songs of bittersweet optimism with so many guitars they attain the character of small symphonies, the musical equivalent of Fracasso's lyrics, the discovery of whole worlds in the smallest moments. But even the most electric creativity would sound hollow without melodies to carry them, stories to tell, and a voice to convince you. Fracasso has all three. --Roy Kasten

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars HIS BEST SO FAR.......2001-08-19

This newest venture by Fracasso is his best work yet. It's a much more pop oriented album than his last one "When I Lived In The Wild". But you still get the angelic voice of one of today's best folk singers. He's also turning into one of our best songwriters. The creative juices are really flowing here, helped along with the flawless production of fellow Texan Charlie Sexton, who also contributes his talents on many of the instruments played here, including some of the fabulous multi-layered guitar work. Many of these songs have a Beatlesque quality to them. Especially OUR FINEST HOUR and the title track WORLD IN A DROP OF WATER, with their Sgt.Pepper like orchestral backing. But for me, the songs that really standout are STARTED ON THE WRONG FOOT, GOLD, and YOUR GIFT TO ME. Songs Lennon and McCartney only wished they had wrote. This album should have a nice crossover appeal for both the folk and pop fans alike. Fracasso is as good a songwriter as the Forbert's, Ely's, and Escovedo's out there. I just hope one day he gets the recognition he deserves. As for "World In A Drop Of Water", it is a very satisfying listen from beginning to end, and comes highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Consistently Revealing.......1999-03-06

I think of Michael Fracasso as one of music's treasures - kind of like a great secret you keep to yourself. His work is easily as important as fellow Austinite Alejandro Escovedo but for whatever reason Al gets all the press. "World (in a drop of water)" finds him more reflective than the outstanding "When I Lived In The Wild." These songs reveal their depth slowly over repeated listens. For example, the opening "Hospital" carries the listener along with it's driving music and lyrical hooks and then you realize the song is about an addict and a teenager's death. Of course that's my the way I see it, which is another of Fracasso's strong points - his songs lead to many interpretations. In "Changed Your Mind" the partners seem to get together again - I think. That's not to say that you'll be scratching your head listening to these songs - there are many upbeat tunes here that will have you singing the hooks for days - see "Chain Link Fence" and "Started On The Wrong Foot." Finally, all songs are sung in Fracasso's angelic voice. The musical accompaniment is outstanding throughout with many unique instruments to grab your attention. Charlie Sexton's production brings the songs to life without going overboard. Perfect thinking man's Rock/Folk.

4 out of 5 stars Reminds me of Mortal Kombat.......2006-07-28

This sounds a lot like that old Mortal Kombat song. I'm sure Moby was more the source of that sound than a copier of it. If you're wondering what this sounds like, just think, "Mooorrrtaaaaal Kombaaaat!!!!!"

    4 out of 5 stars Funkadelic..........2000-07-27

What can I say, the dude is funky! While not always being a fan of remixes and maxi-singles, it's hard not to dance to these tunes. In particular, both mixes of "Drop a Beat" groove. The first mix still sounds fresh, a bit like FatBoy Slim, with rhythmic vocal drops in just the right place. The "deep mix" of "Beat" is more Technotronic-like, good for bringing out the lower end. It just depends what kind of mood you're in, as far as which mix you would prefer. "Electricity" was good, but not my favorite, and "UHF 2" reminded me of Jan Hammer, with it's airy strings/percussion mixture. Released in the early '90's, these songs were definitely influenced by the sounds that were happening at the time, and while I prefer Moby in his latest work, it's a blast going back and checking out his earlier work. Plus for the money, it's a very good value.
