Album Description

Blissed Out Recording artist Bird York is soon to be heard in the Lion's Gate feature CRASH. York co wrote and performed the film's theme song "IN THE DEEP" (off this CD) at the request of the film's writer director Paul Haggis (writer of the four time Oscar winning Million Dollar Baby.) Crash stars Oscar nominee Don Cheadle, Brendan Frasier, Sandra Bullock and Ludacris, in a film reminiscent in tone to Magnolia with York's song IN THE DEEP featured as prominently as Aimee Mann's Wise Up. Mark Isham composed the score. The film opens nationwide May 6.

5 out of 5 stars Absoluttely loved it !!!!.......2006-03-18

To give this one star is almost criminal!!
The music stands by itself. It doesn't have to be compared to anyone. She must be doing something right to have sung to millions at the Academy Awards

1 out of 5 stars been there, heard that........2006-03-06

If you're in the mood for (yet another) Tori Amos wannabe, this is the album for you. If you're in the mood for something that will hold your attention for more than three minutes, find something else. There's very little 'new' 'different' or 'original' about Bird York, except a lot of hype over very little.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have!!.......2006-01-05

I'm blown away by her music. Her voice is angelic--soft and sultry yet raw and powerful--and her phrasing unlike anything heard before. I can play her songs over and over (and over) and they never become old because of Bird's unique phrasing--along with unusually terrific song stylings. On top of all that, the lyrics are haunting and soul stirring. I've turned all my friends on to The Velvet Hour and know Bird is destined become a popular star in no time.

Well worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific New Artist.......2005-10-28

If you like melodic, sultry, captivating and special, then you will like this gem. I have never felt compelled to review any CD until now. I just received this today and can't stop listening...as I write this, I am on my third trip around the tracks. Do yourself a favor and buy it.

Album Description

On their album "See the Sound", the New York quintet brings an atmospheric mix of hiphop, triphop, drum & bass, lounge and jazz. The opening song, "Purest One" effortlessly combines D&B with a drummed hiphop beat and violins. And it is just these surprising combinations which recur. "Danger" catapults you with its warm intro and sax solo from 2-step to regular" pop music, while the instrumental "All I Need" maintains the tension thanks to its strange samples and depth. "See the Sound" is atmospheric and gripping right across the boards, but really comes into its own in the beautifully babbling 'Portrait', a fragile pearl which displays Lissette Alea's flexible vocal chords to their fullest.

Ever buy something because the cover art was appealing or you liked the snazzy name?
I think at some point, everyone makes a risk purchase and most of the time the results are unpleasant.

I purchased this CD after hearing "Danger" as soundtrack to the DDS PS2 game. Most people disregard the music played in the opening credits of a video game, but I know talent when I hear it. I ordered the CD immediately and I am still delighted with the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2006-02-16

Wow -- I had never heard of this group before I heard one of their songs ("Danger") in a video game of all things. I hunted them down, bought the album, and fell in love. I've seen other reviews call this reminiscent of Sade, which I guess it is, but what it reminds me of most is neo-soul with a dash of new age. The lead singer's voice is an incredible instrument. Going to recommend it to all my artsy video gaming friends. =)

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Sound (Final1y!).......2004-06-20

Wow, ladies and gentlemen, you have got to purchase this cd right away, not only for the AMAZING music, but to show the artists that you support them 100 percent. With it's mixes of jazz and trip-hop, an amazing blend to say the least, Etro Anime is perfection to the last beat. The lead singer's voice is like a saccharine tinged Esthero (who, by the way, is amazing; check out "Breath From Another") with the subtle sounds of river water. I promise you that you will not be disappointed with this album; it is one of the few perfect albums to have come out in the past and present decade!

5 out of 5 stars beautiful vocals with great triphop/dnb/jazz beats.......2004-06-17

Right when I heard this I fell in love. Singer is very similar with Esthero, but more subtle, and sweeter, and the beats are more intimate. Actually a lot of the music is very Esthero-esque. If you like Esthero you will love Etro Anime. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars NOW THIS IS WHAT MUSIC SHOULD SOUND LIKE!!!.......2004-04-07

Etro Anime's "See the Sound" was one of those CDs that I just happened to stumble across in the record store. Known to take dares on new acts, I was very impressed by this very ambitious and daring group at first listen. I didn't have to listen to it a couple of times like I do most albums to determine whether I like it or not..."See The Sound" immediately grabbed me with its heavy bass lines, refreshing grooves, dreamy melodies and infectious hooks. Lissette Alea's vocals are beautiful and strong enough to be compared to the likes of Gretchen Lieberum, Nelly Furtado and Geri Soriano-Lightwood (Supreme Beings of Leisure). Songs of note are "Endless", "Diablo", "Adonis", "Summer Rain", "Forgotten Love" and "All I Need." This will indeed be my soundtrack for this Summer!

3 out of 5 stars A "What's Chill?" Sampler.......2006-12-30

There are several tricks to making any kind of compilation album, especially when that compilation is intended to center around a particular mood or genre. This double-disc set contains roughly two and a half hours of music, not much of it "chill" per se.

Even given a record set that doesn't hit the theme on the nose, I would score extra points for consistency. Although most of these songs are, in their own right, certainly worth a listen, the overall effect is uneven and miscalculated. It's as if four different people with five different concepts of "cool" worked on gathering these twenty-six songs together.

There are a few songs that, by now, have become classic chill mainstays (Lamb's "Transfatty Acid," Groove Armada's "Inside My Mind," and, of course, "Lebanese Blonde," by Thievery Corporation), and there are a few lesser known standouts (Kinobe's "Skyscraper" and "Blue Room" by The Orb), but there are also more than a few sore thumbs sticking out of this group. "Dusted," the collaborative effort by Leftfield and Roots Manuva is a great trip-hop recording, but it has no place on a "chill" album. Likewise with "Dirge," an electro-dreamy, heavy hitter by Death In Vegas.

Even inconsistency could be forgiven if the songs were arranged in such a way as to SUGGEST consistency, as opposed to highlighting the discrepancies between the tunes. Unfortunately, this set fails on that count as well. It's worth a buy if you're interested in expanding your record collection, since there are quite a few good songs here. But if you do buy this album, instead of listening to the CDs straight through (as one would normally do with "chill-out" records), I'd recommend sampling from the track list to make your own chill mix. You'll probably be much more successful than the creators of these discs.

4 out of 5 stars Dig this vibe.......2001-03-06

I heard this at a friend's dinner party last weekend and was impressed. As a DJ I probably wouldn't buy it, as I already have most of these tracks already, but it's a good buy for those trying to improve their collections of downtempo, trip-hop, and future jazz. Although I don't think it's strictly a "chill out" compilation, with its inclusion of a few heavy, more danceable tracks, most of the material here sets a nice, mellow vibe for just hanging at the crib, enjoying some wine and having a good, laidback time with a few friends.

3 out of 5 stars Jungle Beats.......2001-02-18

Three minute congo drum instrumentals do not put me in a "Blissed Out Mood", but they may for someone else. This is more for a Portishead fan who likes heavy beats and drums over anything else. If you lean toward rap, drum & bass, enjoy Nightmares On Wax's newer sound over the old, and need to relax, check this out. It's a good compillation (not mixed), with artists who I usually like (Alex Gopher, Thievery Corp, Tim Love Lee, Truby Trio, etc.) but it's like taking all my least favorites and making a double CD out of them. At the same time, if you're into melancholy vocals, and African beat meets trip hop, this is the place.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Rare and interesting, but not necessarily a "must buy".......2000-04-09

Originally released in 1991, I was ecstatic when I found this release while in Australia in 1992. I loved the Beloved's first release "Happiness;" I owned it and all the remix singles. This remix album was a must buy for a fan.

    1. Up, Up and Away (Happy Sexy Mix) - Fun, similar to original, but freshly rearranged, addition of female vocals. About as good as the original.

    2. Hello (Honky Tonk) - Available on the "Hello" single. Sped up (manic pace), different beats, new piano and brass work, added vocals. The ending incorporates part of "The Sun Rising." Not quite as addictive as the original.

    3. Wake Up Soon (Something to Believe In) - Similar in construction to the original, minor orchestral additions and rearrangements. Vocal samples added during the verses are somewhat annoying; samples added during the bridges are similar but work much better. Not as strong as the original, but a good interpretation.

    4. Time After Time (Muffin Mix) - Available on the "Time After Time" single. Takes on a strong rastafarian feel. Stripped down orchestrally from the original with more pronounced beats. A rasta type rap is added to the intro and an extended bridge.

    5. Pablo (Special K Dub) - A remix of the original version of "Pablo" (from the "Time After Time" single). The original was instrumental with a few incomprehensible vocal samples thrown in. In the mix, the beats are sped up, the orchestration is filled out, and the vocal samples are more pronounced. I'm not exactly fond of either version, but it's interesting if you're in a trancey state of mind.

    6. The Sun Rising (Norty's Spago Mix) - Available on the "The Sun Rising" single (the 1990 single, not the 1997 single). With a bit more pronounced beat and some uplifting orchestration additions, I prefer this mix over the original. The general construction remains the same. The main difference is the attitude and clarity of the song are lifted up and refined.

    7. It's Alright Now (Back to Basics) - I believe this is an unreleased track that could have fit on "Happiness." It's fun, positive, upbeat and up-tempo. A little shallow on orchestration, it still gets you moving and singing along.

    8. Your Love Takes Me Higher (Calyx of Isis) - I prefer the original over this remix. While the remix is fast paced and upbeat, it's more manic and not as fun. Additional beats and orchestration. Added vocal samples of middle-eastern female chanting, and a female talking and moaning (sexually). The vocals have been removed.

    9. Up, Up and Away (Beautiful Balloon Mix) - Available on the "The Sun Rising" single (the 1990 single, not the 1997 single). While similar to the original, the orchestration has been changed, making it shallow and feel mellow; it has an acid jazz feel. Interesting, but definitely a different attitude from the original.

    10. Hello (What's All This Then) - Available on the "Hello" single. Funkified version of the original. Similar but rearranged orchestration, beats are funkier and more pronounced, and lyrics have been reverbed and pared down. Rather fun if you loved the original.

    11. The Sun Rising (Danny's "Love Is....." Mix) - A fabulous, rich mix, taking the original to a new level. While not my favorite song on "Happiness," this is one of the best executed remixes on this release. The additional remix and production add to the song's depth and emotion.

Those are the 11 listed above. Here are the additional 5, if you happen to be lucky enough to get the full release.

    12. Your Love Takes Me Higher (Simply Divine) - A phenomenal interpretation of the original. Funky beats and additional orchestration make up for the lack of most vocals. Additional mixing maintains the fun, upbeat nature of the original, taking it to the next level. Very fun and enjoyable.

    13. Paradise (My Darling, My Angel) - Available on the "Hello" single. Non-album track that is a cross between "The Sun Rising" and "Wake Up Soon." Somewhat fun and funky, but a definite B-side.

    14. Time After Time (Through the Round Window) - A new mix that did not appear on the "Time After Time" single. The beat has been modified to be more pronounced with a slight hip-hop feel. This mix that lacks vocals. However, the additional production, along with keeping the construction similar to the original, really make this mix work. You bop along and sing the lyrics in your head; it's very enjoyable.

    15. Don't You Worry (Timeless Dub) - While I consider the original version trite and sappy (but still fun), this mix contains a lot more depth and maturity in its sound. Most of the vocals are gone. While the orchestration has been pared down, it has been filled in with better and deeper orchestration (almost Pet Shop Boy in nature). A definite improvement.

    16. Acid Love - This is a non-album track that is c. 1998. This is an excellent danceable track. Jon Marsh's vocals are a lot deeper, almost spoken. A great song for the dance floor.

After all that, how would I rate the album? I give it 3 stars, based on the assumption that the Amazon version only has the first 11 songs. Of the 11, five are available on the remix singles released with "Happiness." While a good release, I mostly prefer the originals over these remixes. However, this is a rare CD, and if you missed out on remix singles and you are a fan of "Happiness," it's a release you should probably have. If the release truly has all 16 songs, I would bump it up to 4 stars. Those last 5 songs really help make this a pretty excellent remix album.

If you're an avid Beloved fan, buy this CD; it's pretty rare and different, even with only 11 tracks. If you're not into remixes or rarities, you should probably pass up this CD. However, if in your travels you should find the 16-track version, by all means, BUY IT. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A great album for The Beloved fan........1998-10-23

These tracks were all recorded way back when before the Beloved were big here in the US, but they still have, because they always had, the beat, the thump and tempo that all great Beloved songs have. I don't know what it is about the Beloved songs, but they are great for just chillin' out and also great for turning up the volume and rock out. No matter what the mood, the Beloved is there.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars chill-out, trance that won't go out of date.......2001-05-03

This is DEFINITELY the most chill-out album I have ever purchased. This album contains music from 80s classic ambient/trippy tunes from Art of Noise and Cocteau Twins; 80s modern-rock-ish with a touch of jazz of Electra; British deep bass electronica music of Sandals mixed by Leftfield; and, my favorite, rare Paul Oakenfold mix of Izit Stories that sounds like island/beach music--happy and alive. Overall this album has a feel of acid-jazz, trip-hop feel to it.

        5 out of 5 stars unforgetable.......2000-08-14

This cd from sandals is absolutely fantastic. I will listen to this forever.
