One of the most eagerly awaited albums in rock history, Big Brother & the Holding Company's 1968 major label debut (they'd previously released one thinly produced collection on the small Mainstream label) made good on all the hype generated by Janis Joplin's amazing performance at the Monterey Pop Festival the year before. Crowned by its hit single, a churning remake of Aretha Franklin's sister Erma's "Piece of My Heart," the album also contained Joplin's Monterey showstopper, Big Mama Thornton's "Ball and Chain," as well as the Gershwin classic "Summertime," on which Joplin's always underappreciated band (especially guitarists Sam Andrews and James Gurley) match her vocal intensity with their own ferocious playing. This expanded reissue includes two previously unissued outtakes ("Roadblock" and "Flower in the Sun") and a couple of heretofore unheard live cuts ("Catch Me Daddy" and "Magic of Love"), all from 1968. --Billy Altman

Not what I expected. Even though I listened to some of the music before ordering, I expected a dif. sound on some of the recordings. Every song is about the same...screaming.

I first heard CHEAP THRILLS, by Janis Joplin's Big Brother & The Holidng Company, on vinyl. It was a life altering experience. At that time, it was the age of cheesy boy bands, screaming divas and mindless techno. This 1968 release was a breath [no, make that a gust!] of fresh air. This album starts off with a bang ("Combination of the Two") and relentlessly grows with intensity and bold musicianship. For starters, Janis' accompanists and back-up singers are seamless. I don't care how stoned out they were. They sound amazing, and a lot better than many sober artists of today. You can tell, since this was a live recording, just how stoked the audience was to see them. Janis encouraged...no, tried DEMANDED audience participation. Joplin thrived on drawing energy from the crowds that came to see her, and this is really made evident here.

What sets this music apart from other bands of its time (or of any time, really) was the combination of terrific, brilliantly orchestrated and arranged instrumentals, Joplin's amazing, spectacularly expressive vocals, channeling the agony ("I Need a Man To Love") and the ecstasy ("Summertime") of love and life. Plus, there are four bonus cuts, on this CD release of the album. I love you, Janis. It is really extraordinary how many artists have been inspired by her. There are truly no substitutes of imitations for someone so incomparable. Buy CHEAP THRILLS and consider it your introduction to real music.

there's a line of thought that's been floated out there that big brother & the holding company were not up to par with the talent of janis joplin. bunk. while nobody is going to accuse them of possessing any amazing facile grace on their instruments, the fact remains that ms joplin made her most powerful music with these boys. CHEMISTY here trumps technique. big brother's raw sprawling sound perfectly compliments janis joplin's wild vocals. she sounds possessed by some spirit of liberation at times here, shrieking a juxtaposed answer to the musicians fury. her performance seems to draw an energy from the wicked sounds being produced around her. this entire album is a wild rock and roll ride, and a must for all collections. the work she produced after big brother & the holding company seems tame in comparison.

A WONDERFUL EARLY LISTEN TO JANIS AS WE ALL KNOW HER.......2007-03-11

i have always wanted to check out this album, and now i see what others meant when they listened to it. janis showed her behind on this one. my fave on here though is TURTLE BLUES, one she wrote. her performance of this is a wonderful thing to listen to. janis, when she is into it, man, has a way of sending chills up and down my whole doggone body in an odd way. i also like that last bonus cut on there as well........i cannot think of the name of it!!!! all in all, this is an enjoyable album. i would recommend it to anyone who has CLOSED MINDED opinion about janis joplin's singing style. actually, i also recommend anything where she is live..............especially early.

My Favorite Album.......2007-03-10

Cheep Thrills is my old man's favorite album, daddy! When Janice Joplin was with Big Brother & The Holding Company they were both at their best and it wasn't Janice. It was truly the whole band Big Brother not just Janice (tho she was stellar). The cd has bonus cuts on it which don't improve the album. In it's original layout it was just the coolest from the Crum comix on the jacket to the lineup of pure genius classics. Got it nice -n- cheep

This is unlike anything you've heard! Yes, there is plenty of Janis Joplin in this album, but there is also so much Big Brother and the Holding Company! You have both male and female voices on this album! Janis Joplin shines, and the best song on the album is "Call on Me" it's nothing like you've ever heard. Janis is at her best, and there is another version of "Call on Me" on this album. This is a must for any Janis Joplin fan.

Raw, explosive - Best of the San Francisco sound.......2007-04-08

Simply titled Big Brother & The Holding Company (1967), the album is Janis's one attempt to be part of a group ensemble instead of the "star." The performances are proof-positive that Janis never succeeded at blending in - she had too much power. In the opening number, "Bye, Bye Baby," Janis's voice is double-tracked. Thanks to the elegant re-mastering job, the raw beauty of that performance can now be fully appreciated. The group itself produced a fine debut album, but it's doubtful that the album would have been treated to such a lavish re-mastering job without the historical connection that Joplin provided. This is the best of the San Francisco sound: raw, driven rock where the musicians were genuinely talented. Sounds great!!

Elements of Greatness.......2007-03-25

For those who do not already know this album, let me first echo a few of the caveats made by some of the other reviewers: 1) This being Big Brother's first album, made before the Monterey Pop Festival and thus before they, and most especially Janis, hit international stardom, it lacks the developed sound and careful production of Cheap Thrills. 2) Janis sings lead not on every song, but on every second track. 3) A number of the tunes must be taken for what they are: goofy, experimental forays by an inspired group of talented hippie-musicians who were still in the process of discovering what it is that they do best and in so doing developing a unique artistic identity. As such, songs like "Light is Faster Than Sound" and "Caterpillar" (one could add to this list "Harry" and "Gutra's Garden," both of similar ilk found not on this album but on Big Brother live collections) would never have made it onto an album with a more commercially-saavy producer, yet they reveal some of the competing--and fun--elements that were in the Big Brother mix from the beginning.

With those caveats in mind, this album is nevertheless a jewel, expecially when one considers how precious little material exists from Janis's greatest period, the mere two-and-a-half years she spent with Big Brother. Janis's voice here is higher, clearer, and more piercing than the raspiness of her Cheap Thrills period; it and the music have not yet found their way to the hugeness of drama, dissonance and pain that mark that second album.

But the voice and the sound on this album have their own special appeal. Songs like "Women is Losers," "Intruder," "Bye, Bye, Baby," "Down on Me" display a startlingly original talent, a voice with a phrasing and tone and force of conviction that leaps out at the listener with an urgency that is unlike any other.

Finally, a note to those who may already own the original vinyl edition of this album and therefore question whether they need another copy: The original issue and many of the subsequent re-issues did not contain the song "The Last Time," which was the B-side of a single. This song, written entirely (music and lyrics) by Janis, is astonishing. For me, hearing it for the first time only a few years ago, it was as though I had traveled back in time or Janis had traveled forward into the present and I was hearing Janis's incendiary being in all its searingly defiant nakedness and immediacy. It's at moments like these that I can't help but recall the words Janis sings in "Flower in the Sun":
"I see you looking up at the sky
(Oh, how high it is) --
You wonder if there is another me --
Oh, how can there be? How can there be?"

I WAS SURPRISED BY HOW MUCH I REALLY DUG THIS.......2007-03-01

you know, this was actually pretty good. i listened to it for the first time, and i was surprised at the folky sound of it. i thought that it was gonna be a blues rock romp. i see this as a preamble to CHEAP THRILLS. janis gets her down, but she does not get off on this one like i thought she would. i like the stuff she does not do lead on as well. very interesting formats.

This belated collection of Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company tracks features 14 performances, a dozen of which debut here. Of the two familiar selections, the version of "Ball and Chain" here is the same one that graces Cheap Thrills, and "Bye Bye Baby" can be heard on In Concert. No matter if it's not quite the definitive Big Brother album; it is nonetheless a hell of a lot of fun. Big Brother's playing is intense and relatively tight. A magnificent moment is heard in "I Need a Man to Love" when Joplin urges the band on. "C'mon boys, play," she prods, and a stunning Sam Andrews guitar solo ensues. If you've never heard Joplin do "Summertime," grab this album. If you have, grab it anyway. It's wonderful. --Myra Friedman

One of a kind.......2007-03-04

I was a young teen in 1968. Even back then, Janis Joplin was an acquired taste, so imagine my surprise when I learned that she could send my old-fashioned dad into paroxyms of ecstasy! I once actually saw him rise out of his chair and sway back and forth in front of the TV as a feathered and boa-ed Joplin poured her heart out for a live audience. He was mesmerized, thrilled, smiling like a child. It was a moment I'll never forget, cuz my father normally listened to Perry Como, Peggy Lee and Bert Kaempfert on the "Music Of Your Life" station.

That's the sort of magic effect Joplin's rare talent had on listeners. She always sang full throttle, gave her audiences everything within her, and we responded in kind. This LIVE AT WINTERLAND '68 album is a fine example of Janis in top form, performing with a band that paled by comparison to her brilliance. Big Brother & the Holding Co. do their best, though. The miking and mix are excellent throughout-- recordings sound very clear. Includes 24 pages of liner notes.

"One of a kind" is an overused phrase, yet it's a certainty that there will NEVER be another Janis Joplin. We were blessed to have her, if only for a moment.

Garage Band Blues.......2006-06-15

When I'm in the mood for Janis,I put on Cheap Thrills. Nothing wrong with Kozmic Blues or Pearl, but they are the "cleaned up, dressed for meetin'" Janis. There's something endearing, energizing, and wild about the intense sloppiness of Big Brother that's perfect for Janis' over the top caterwauling. Talk about the combination of the two! I'll be darned - it is better than Cheap Thrills! The band sears with buzzsaw acid-drenched guitars, practically coming off the track, with Janis hanging on for dear life. Time-warped garage band blues with a world class singer. Considering the technology at the time, the sound is great.

Better than Cheap Thrills....really.......2006-04-13

I was just about old enough (14) in 1968 to appreciate Big Brother when they released the Cheap Thrills LP. After many years I decided to replace it in CD. However reading the reviews here swayed me into buying this live recording instead. Good move. Ordinarily I don't care much for recordings of concert performances. This is different. This is great. BUY THIS CD. If not satisfied I will refund your money (just kidding).
No person even remotely interested in Joplin/acid rock/the60's or whatever will fail to find something of value here. Joplin purists may prefer some of her later work, maybe not. But if you are looking for "chemistry" this is where to find it. Big Brother might not have gone too far on their own, but they sure are great with her in front. And really, without this band at this time in this place who's to say what turns Janis Joplin's career would have taken?
Ten bucks for a piece of history. You can't go wrong.

Must Have.......2006-10-25

Whatever was a good crossover single between the sounds of 'definitely maybe' and 'morning glory'. It is also one of their best radio songs meaning everyone has heard it, but may not own it. I'm assuming this song will be included on an Oasis 'best of' compilation one day, but until then, this is a must have for all Oasis fans, as it is unavailable on any other Oasis release unless you were lucky enough to get the special bonus disc release of 'definitely maybe'. I think this song summed up the band perfectly in their early days and defined who they wanted to be. The B-sides are just as good as the title track, and while they are also available on other LP's, they flow through perfectly on this CD.

One of Oasis' Best!.......2005-11-09

Noel Gallagher once said that he regrets throwing so many songs as B-Sides. "Some bands," he said, "could base their entire careers on these songs."

Truer words have never been spoken. With Whatever, It's Good to be Free, Half the World Away, and Slide Away all on one small disc, what else could one ask for?

One of their best singles..........2005-07-09

Released in December of 1994, Whatever is declaring anthem sung by no other than Liam. If Liam had discovered his writing skills sooner, he could have written something much like this. Nevertheless, this single is a must-have for any fan of Oasis.

Every track on here can be listened to time and time again and not get old. Pick it up.

Essential (because of its absence from The Masterplan).......2005-06-14

Like so many of Oasis' celebrated b-sides, "Whatever" leaves the people who are blessed enough to hear it wondering why the heck it wasn't on an album. I feel so sorry for any Oasis fan who hasn't heard this song, as well as a number of their other b-sides; whether it's because they weren't featured on The Masterplan or because they're from more recent singles released after The Masterplan (e.g. Go Let It Out, All Around The World). It's almost funny to think that Oasis is at their best where and when nobody's looking. There's no question "Whatever" is an all-time top 10 (or at least top 15) Oasis track.

As unbelievably great as "Whatever" truly is, I have to say that "Half The World Away" is the best song on this single. But because it was featured on The Masterplan, it doesn't add much to this single. "(It's Good) To Be Free" isn't that great a song, and there's enough freeness in the 6-minute title track to go around, anyway. And, for whatever reason, "Slide Away" (an a-side from Oasis' debut, Definitely Maybe) is featured as the final track. I'm not really sure why it's here. It doesn't take away from this single's greatness, but it doesn't add to it either.

This is undoubtedly the best Oasis single ever released. The only other single that even comes close in comparison is "Go Let It Out" (because the two b-sides there are better than the entire album--Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants), although none of the songs featured there can shake a stick or a twig or a branch at "Whatever" and its lasting brilliance. And because it was left off The Masterplan, "Whatever" has become an essential single that every Oasis fan out there should own. Don't miss out on this timeless tune.

Lyla is the first single released from Oasis's 2005 album Don't Believe The Truth.

The song went straight in at Number 1 on UK's singles chart, while in the US, it only entered Billboard's Modern Rock tracks at number 19.

Upon listening to it for the first time, I disliked it. But after repeated listening, it grows on you like fungus until you find yourself stomping your feet, shaking your head, and imitating Liam's singing style as you sing along to every one of Noel's lyrics.

Lyla is one of the catchiest songs Oasis have ever recorded, and one of their definite classics.

LOVE IT! Lyla is the best. Eyeball Tickler is a great footstomper. Won't Let You Down is Outstanding - it has you stomping and clapping!!!!!! Can you tell I am a rabid Oasis fan? This body of work is a BAND effort - everybody wrote and all the songs are great.

Addictive Song.......2005-07-20

'Lyla' is a song that is just plain addicting. The chorus, especially when Liam and Noel harmonize together is one of oasis' best moments. I've been listening to the song for a long time and it just gets better and better.

'Eyeball Tickler' is a very good b-side written by Gem. It's different than anything oasis has done. Gem brings a different sound to the band.

'Won't Let You Down' is Liam trying too much to sound like John Lennon. It's nice at first but gets annoying after a few listens. It's ok, with 'Love Like A Bomb', 'Meaning of Soul', 'Guess God Thinks I'm Abel' and 'Pass Me Down the Wine' Liam has written 4 great songs in the 'Don't Believe the Truth' era so far. He's allowed to have one bad one. Even though I don't like it,I can see how it could appeal to some.

A classic A-side and one very good b-side makes for an excellent single.

Does Oasis have Artistic Integrity?.......2005-06-07

1 star is reserved for bands like Creed and Three Doors Down. I give this single two stars because this band is a disappointment. There was a time when they brought something to the table. Noel's songwriting presented a unique pop melody. Not here. Not only did they rip off "Street Fighting Man" with this single, but the melody here is nearly identical to what is one of the most distinct melodies in rock n' roll. It's good that oasis is looking in different directions for influences, since their fans are growing up and their sound is becoming stale. Just because they have accents doesn't make their music exotic. With that said, they may have the capability of being a decent rock band so I hope the single isn't indicative of the album, good luck Oasis on creating original music.

You can tell one of two things from the soundtrack for this album, either whoever put it together is really very cool and doesn't conform to "pop" hits, or they're perhaps from the U.K. or somewhere that's playing cool tracks, cause this is a very hip collection of songs for a pretty fun movie.

I discovered Oasis is all over this album, and Paul Oakenfeld is just dang cool and has some of (or at least one of his well known hits on here).

This is a great soundtrack for those who like Oasis style tunes, as well as other alternative rock!

Incredible... and worth the price.......2005-10-21

You get quite an eclectic mix of music on this compilation. The best of the batch being Noel Gallagher's newly penned tune, "Who Put the Weight of the World On My Shoulders?" This track starts of acoustically, and goes into a sweeping orchestrally driven middle, and ends the way it began. The two remixes of "Morning Glory" standouts, "Cast No Shadow" and "Morning Glory," really make it worth the dinero for any tried and true 'mad fer it' oasis freak like me.

Outside of that, the tracks by Unkle and Kasabian are great, and the rest is solid. I would really like to see this movie, as the premise sounds good, and the soundtrack is incredible!

Talk About A Crime!.......2006-10-05

One of Annie & Davie's most stunning, original, haunting, and yet criminally ignored albums, both critically and commercially. Maybe it was the reticence of US radio to push a single that said "Sexcrime" in the title? Maybe it was the dismal, downbeat, and box-office failure of the film? Maybe it was because the label pushed this as a side project/soundtrack rather than a "real" Eurythmics album, but make no mistake, this is some of the Eurythmics' BEST work ever, featuring memorable songs like JUILA, I DID IT JUST THE SAME, ROOM 101, DOUBLEPLUSGOOD, and many more. Tellingly, while all the other Eurythmics albums got the deluxe re-issue CD treatment in 2006, only this album has been somehow left behind, discarded like one of those prisoners in Room 101. Look for it on import or in the bargain bins, but do get it - you won't be sorry - the mixture of Dave's cold, clinical soundscapes and Annie's fiery, passionate vocals (like Yaz) cannot be denied.

Little-known gem.......2006-04-19

It is nice to see such good reviews for this little-known gem. There are a few great songs on here, especially "Julia." However, I have never understood why they changed "Thought crime" to "Sex crime" in the first song. My memory is that the book talks only about "Thought crime," although I last read it in 1984, so I could be wrong. I find that its easier to listen to this Eurythmics album 20 years later than most of their other ones - in fact, I really just listen to a song here or there on most of the other albums. Grab a copy of this before it goes out of print! - the sales ranking is pretty darn bad.

Fantastic album.......2005-10-19

I don't know why this album was so under-rated. I guess it's not as "main stream" as some other Eurythmics albums, but it's essential listening material for anybody who likes Eurythmics. It's not an album I would ever want to be without. I guess being an Orwell AND Eurythmics fan, makes it all the more compelling.

This isn't so much a soundtrack as a rock fantasia on the themes of the movie (and the book). The intro to "Doubleplusgood", about news from the Malabar front, is pointedly relevant today, amidst the periodic reports of "turning points" in Iraq. Haunting and (in a good way) creepy.

Great Soundtrack.......2007-07-08

I thought the music they used for the movie was pretty darn good and I knew that most of the music on this album was not used in the movie, so I was not sure what to expect from the "rejected soundtrack"... Personally, I think this album contains some of the Eurythmics strongest songs since "Sweet Dreams". The individual songs may not stand alone that well, but as a complete album "1984" does a great job of evoking a mood and the songs strongly carry variations on that mood.
"1984" has spend years in my regular rotation of music and I haven't gotten tired of it yet.

Forgotten Music Remembered.......2007-04-05

I had forgotten how good a lot of the music from this movie was and remembered what a shame that so much of the Eurythmics great music was cut from the final version of the movie - a tragedy. I'm glad I made this purchase - it brought back memories of the early Eurythmics era.

Worth it for "Julia" alone. .......2006-12-13

Sexcrime and DoublePlusGood as referred to in other reviews are cheesy but enjoyed the instrumental tracks and of course, Julia. The track is worth ownership of the CD alone. This is one of those songs you'll hear the first time, love it's beautiful melancholy and can never forget it. Every note, instrument and vocal track seem to blend perfectly for maximum emotional impact. I consider it the best work this talented duo has recorded.

I Have To Come To The Defense Of This Album, The Music Is So Atmospheric And Moody And Full Of Heavy Synthesizers, It Is A Journey Of Sounds And Rhythms That Has To Be Heard, Most Of The Album Has Sparse Lyrics, Only Four Tracks Have Any Lyrics:

The Rest Are Instrumentals With Annie Chanting And Vocalizing With Her Voice Becoming Truly Another Instrument, With An Occasional Muttering Of A Word Or Two.
'Doubleplusgood' Is Fun But Silly And Although I've Always Loved 'Sex Crime (1984)' It's Not Among The
Gems Of The Album. 'For The Love Of Big Brother' Is Really A Cool And Icy Track And 'Room 101' Is A Thundering Soundscape, But The Balled 'Julia' Is The Star, One Of The Most Beautiful And Loneliest Songs Ever Heard.

With The Recent Re-Issues Of The Eurythmics Re-Mastered Albums, My Hope Is That This Enchanting And Mysterious Album Will Also Get A Re-Mastering With Bonus Tracks, Such As:

Great Music.......2005-02-09

So many people did not either understand or know that the Eurythmics had been contracted to write the music that was supposed to be in the film release of Michael Radford's film 1984, but due to contractual problems in the US, the film was released without their music to the film. (It is my understanding that in the world wide release the music from this CD was on the film's soundtrack.) So many people who never read the book, yet were Eurythmics fans, could not understand how they, as a group, could create music that was not up to their regular standards (circa 1984). Not that I am a music snob by any means, but I think they did a great job conveying the feeling of George Orwell's phenomenal book, and Micheal Radford's vision of what music in that situation would sound like. Please read the book and listen to the soundtrack or watch the film with this soundtrack playing...I think that if you do not care for this CD now, it might change your mind!

Let there be love gets 5 stars from me, it is great song sung by both Liam and Noel in the style of the Beatles. However the B sides don't live up to Oasis' reputation for putting out great tracks on there singles as well as albums.
Don't get me wrong, Track 2 "Sittin' here in silence (on my own) is still a good song, but sadly only runs for about 2 minutes and so much more could have been done with it. Written by Noel, it is very much a Lennon-esque song that deserves to be a B side only
Track 3, a live version of Rock N' Roll Star has been done before, and is no better or worse than other versions getting around.
The B sides get 3 stars each from me. Buy it only if you are a hardcore Oasis fan.

Middle of the road Oasis single.......2006-06-21

"Let There Be Love" is good as ballads go. It has a nice Lennon-esque feel (think "Real Love".) It's also the only true Liam/Noel duet on record. It was better in its earlier incarnation as the Noel-sung b-side "It's a Crime."

The extra tracks,"Sittin' Here in Silence (On My Own)" and "Rock N' Roll" (live) are good filler. Unfortunately, this CD single doesn't stack up to past Oasis singles that had brilliant extra material.

If you're an Oasis fan, buy it. If not, stick with the Don't Believe the Truth album.

"Come on, baby blue...".......2006-04-17

Let There Be Love is the third single released from Oasis's critically acclaimed 2005 album Don't Believe The Truth.

It's a sobering, delightful, and mellow rock single featuring both Gallagher brothers, Liam and Noel, sharing lead vocals, making it their first duet since Acquiesce.

The album closing mini-epic has a piano playing throughout, and some of Noel's best lyrics: "Who kicks a hole in the sky, so the heavens would cry over me", and "Shake up your tired eyes, the world is waiting for you".

The best part of the song to me personally is when Noel starts his vocal duty with "Come on, baby blue...". Priceless!

This song is a great tune, perhaps the most commercial song on the new Oasis album. It's one of the few Oasis songs ever to feature both Gallagher brothers, Liam sings the first bit then when Noel comes in with the 'Come on Baby Blue' line, it sounds amazing - Noel has never sounded better than on the 'Don't Believe The Truth' album. Buy this single, if not, definitely buy the album - believe that truth!

What can I say? I would have never chosen this track as a single for this album.

Traditionally, singles are picked for radioplay and marketability.

"Let There Be Love" is not one of those songs. It's a weak track. Noel should have just left this up to Liam to sing the whole song.

Reccomended for serious Oasis fans only.
