Editorial Reviews

From the Artist
Why have I made this record? Well, see, there was this night in Glasgow in December of 2002...

It was the last night of the European tour for ‘18’, and to celebrate we went to an underground party in some abandoned railway tunnels (outside, mind you, in December in Glasgow...very cold...). And even though the abandoned railway tunnels were cold and damp (and smelly), it ended up being an amazing party, largely because of the music. The DJ’s were playing hard, sexy, straightforward dance music, and it was perfect. I was reminded of just how much I love hard, sexy, straightforward dance music, and when I arrived home the next day I decided to make a simple, straightforward dance record. I wanted to make a record that would somehow remind me of the best underground clubs that I had been to over the last couple of years. Not an experimental record, not an avant-garde record, but a straightforward, underground, electronic dance record. and that’s why I made this record under the name ‘Voodoo Child’. By making it under the name ‘Voodoo Child’ I could just concentrate on the music, and not worry about singles or videos or promotion (or even record sales...I’m under no illusions in making an underground dance record. I’m not expecting it to sell millions of copies...).

I guess that I could’ve avoided writing this little essay and instead have summed it up in one simple sentence: I love electronic dance music, and that’s why I made this record.

And I hope that you like it.

Thanks, Moby

4 out of 5 stars Baby Monkey - User Experience Self-log:.......2004-10-21

0:06 into Track #1... Am I loosing my mind, or is this a moby styled loop?

2:15 into Track #1... At this point this point I think we all know its Moby for sure.

Track #4... Ok Im ready to start Dancing now.... Energy building, and... 3:25, nice break... very nice! [in case the person reading this is Moby] ;) YES!!! Starts up again!... 6:43

Track #5 Definitely different... I think I hear some old skool Moby here

Track #7... At first this sounds a bit Icey-ish but more trancy. A fresh sound from Moby.

Track #8 1:58... Ok where is my copy of Early Underground?

"Its Party Time!..."

4 out of 5 stars Like the man said- it's just good, straightforward dance.......2004-09-27

Okay, i like experimental stuff, creativity keeps electronica as a whole alive. But now and again, it's nice to have a good artist who simply comes down to earth and gives us some good music. This is GOOD DANCE. (Except the last track, which is good except it NEVER ENDS...). As such, this is a good, all-around CD for whenever. It's not mood specific, triumphant, melancholy, whatever- it just is. Moby has tremendous capacity for experimentation, but when you get off the hinterlands and come back to the main area- you see that the experimentation is based on, well, good, straightforward music.

5 out of 5 stars A gem .......2004-08-08

Since Moby's carreer began, his musical style has matured and evolved. Especially with the releases of Play and 18. His music has evolved into almost poppish electronica. As Voodoo Child, he gets back to his original roots from the early 90's. This album sounds a lot like "MOBY: RARE B-SIDES" the superb 2-disc set released by Moby a few years ago. The music in this album is earlier Moby mixed with newer Moby. You can tell it's the "newer" Moby 'cause of the drumwork. Every musician has a favorite chord and style of music they like to use in their own productions. Moby is no different. Since the release of Play, I have noticed simularities in all the tracks he's done since then. That's not a bad thing. It's not repetive. And it takes true skill for that. Most artists sound the same each and every track. I do the same. I'm a electronica musician. And you can tell it's me every track because I usually use the same softwares and stuff for my drums and synths. And I have a set chord reference for most of my tracks. It's my brain at work.(...)

So is this a good album? Yes. It's one of the finest. And I hope Moby releases more albums under the name Voodoo Child.

good stuff but nothing extraordinary (except tracks 4 and 12) if i should try to express what i'm expecting from real dance music i would put down only one group which stands for the best dance maker. in my opinion, guys from "chemical brothers" with their skils really got it (nothing new, of course). and the difference between moby and ChB??? how simple, if you take the ChB's best dance song of all times - for me : "sunshine underground" (Surrender) - from the beginning to the end you can hear the developement, which i would compare to the developement in the built-up of drama works - thesis, synthesis...climax, apocalypse. This is what makes me feel the excitement, the tension which is constantly run up until to the climax of the song...and that's what the majority (moby inclusive) of so called dance-songs lacks. i'm sorry Moby, as you said you did only "simple, straightforward dance music".

4 out of 5 stars Smart and Sexy.......2004-02-17

This is great, classic-sounding electronic music. I don't know much about Moby, but I can tell you that this album is intelligent, funky, and it pulls off being ethereal without even remotely resembling trance.

Moby throws together some House and Techno (but not only that), all overlaid by that beautiful electronic keyboard- very 80's, but I mean that in a good way. My favorite tracks so far are 3, 4, and 5... very hot! Some tracks are more techy than sexy, but nonetheless... this would be lethal on the dance floor. I will dance much to this CD. Yes.

    5 out of 5 stars eclectic music.......1999-01-20

They have class, but they have no style - no one style, that is. If you have heard one song, you do not know Baby Ray. They have much more in store for you than any other band. They call it pop rock, but they spread out from there. They are best experienced live and rockin' because they are performance artists, but the CD is still a great bang for your buck. These guys are good, they got it goin' on and they're tight. They are accomplished musicians who know words and music and put them together in unexpected shapes and sizes. Baby Ray appeals to a lot of different people because each song takes you on a whole new trip. You don't know where it's going, but you're enjoying the ride. This is the best local band i've seen in a while. Give us more!

    4 out of 5 stars Pleasing infection.......1998-11-16

Monkeypuzzle is a sneaky album. The first couple tracks admit Baby Ray's lineage: swirling, insistent vocals delivered with punchy yet blended instrumental twinges. XTC, REM, Jellyfish, and Counting Crows all come to mind (XTC being the most notable flavor). You might feel a twinge of deja vu. The real payoff, however, is buried in the deeper album tracks, most notably "Trainwreck," "The Ballad of Billy Ray," and "Thing Called Springtime." Song structure relates directly to lyrical meaning in these ditties, and now I find myself searching for such connections in the other tracks. If spend most of your time listening to "harder" rock acts, don't be fooled by the sometimes saccharine and overly deliberate blends...there is plenty of savory edge in the very craft of these songs.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the most unique recording of 1998........1998-11-10

Is there something wrong with the speakers of the stereo? As the opening song ping pongs from one side of the room to the other I am quite certain that I am beginning a sensory delight.Favorite Groat ditties (his voice sweeps you away...) Trainwreck, The Ballad of Baby Ray (all bands should write about themselves) The sad Thing Called Springtime and the action packed Porky's Prey. I love this CD. you will play it many times.
