  1. Glen Gould Discusses His Peformances Of The Goldberg Variations With Time Page, August 22, 1982, Toronto, Canada
  2. Studio Outtakes From The 1955 Goldberg Variations Recording Session

Amazon.com

Glenn Gould's recording debut in 1955 of Bach's Goldberg Variations took the world by storm. His decidedly un-Romantic view, absolute technical skill, startling lucidity, and right-on rhythmic changes, combined with his eccentricities--audible humming, sometimes outrageously fast tempi--made him an instantly legendary pianist and elucidated Bach's music in a whole new way. Gould's final recording, 26 years later, was also of the Goldbergs. It's a more relaxed, sometimes much slower, more inward reading (although still very much his own, complete with oddly ferocious attacks and accents), in which he offers repeats of the first half of 15 of the Variations. Both performances are glorious, each in its own way, and this luxurious new set of three CDs is entertaining, a joy to hear, and revelatory; it belongs in any music lover's collection. The third CD is devoted to outtakes and chatter from recording sessions. At one point, Gould improvises "God Save the King" and exhibits how it turns into "The Star-Spangled Banner." And a long interview with critic Tim Page offers great insight into Gould's weird humor and unique outlook. A must-have collection. --Robert Levine

2 out of 5 stars Amazing playing but.......2007-07-14

Glenn Gould has mastered the Bach, Goldberg Variations with out a question of doubt. His playing and style is absolutely amazing. The part that spoils the whole thing for me is when he starts humming. If you listen to it with the head phones on you can hear him humming away in the back ground. It is such a shame as he spoils his own brilliant performance.

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely maddening.......2007-07-10

Imagine going to live piano recital. The music is gorgeous, you're really getting into it - and the person next to you starts humming along. You try to block it out, but the more you do, the more conscious of it you become. It becomes all you can hear, and suddenly the performance is just background noise to the humming. That's my experience with these CDs, the 1981 version more so than the 1955. Perhaps the humming's not so prominent when played on a proper stereo system, but listening on my PC with a pair of headphones, the humming is all I hear, and it's absolutely maddening. I can deal with the hiss, but the infernal humming is just too much for my mere mortal concentration. It may be the most amazing performance of anything ever, but if you can't listen to it, does it matter?

1 out of 5 stars "Oddly ferocious attacks".......2007-05-08

My title comes from the editorial review above. Why such attacks? Bach wrote the Goldberg Variations for a harpsichord with two registers (two keyboards). Until Wanda Ladowska revived them in the 1930s, on a "pian-arpsichord" built specially for her, they were considered unplayable on piano. That opinion was correct, like it or not. The contrasts of register, intrinsic to the music, CANNOT be rendered intelligently merely by hammering ornaments and dancing on the pedals. Some pianists, however, come closer to making decent music of the Goldbergs by subduing their egos and letting the delicacy of the counterpoint be heard. There may be a case for playing Bach's other harpsichord solo works on piano -- Richard Goode does a decent job, for instance -- but the Goldberg Variations belong on harpsichord only forevermore.

5 out of 5 stars One for the ages........2007-02-14

To be a sonic witness to this music is a real treat. Gould's approach both times is so personal and probing. What is really satisfying is how the 1981 recording is not just a rehash of 1955. Each era has it's own unique and distinct personality. This is a "must" in your musical collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Life-Affirming Adventure.......2007-01-06

If you are new to Bach and Gould, "A State of Wonder" offers you a life-affirming adventure. This 3-disc package includes Glenn Gould's 1955 recording of the Goldberg Variations, with raw exuberance and breakneck speed. Disc 2 contains his 1981 reinterpretation, and this music has never sounded more divinely beautiful to this perpetual Bach student. Disc 3 is icing on the cake, featuring Gould's professorial zeal and musical logic (also lame but endearing humor). If you love the Goldberg--and I passionately hope you will--then curiosity will lead you to superb piano versions by Andras Schiff and Murray Perahia, and Wanda Landowska on the harpsichord. For further Bachian "wonder," Artur Schnabel's recording of the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue is awesome. Gould's Bach, however, remains my favorite. As for the brouhaha about his sometimes audible humming, I love it: Glenn lives!

This revamped version of the Carpenters' two original Singles LPs may, despite the absence of some Top 40 charters, stand as the definitive single-CD collection of the duo's hits. Included are most of the reasons Karen Carpenter's bring-the-pain vocals are still revered by thrift-shopping college kids and their moms alike. Despite the act's squeaky-clean image, Karen was of course more than touched by tragedy; at least one of the more hopeful of these tunes, "For All We Know," has doubt built right into its title. The best of this is smart, cry-in-your-Evian pop that sounds a lot less dated than it might in your memory. "Close to You" and "Hurting Each Other" are actually soulful claims on their then-new soft-pop tradition, while the towering "Goodbye to Love" is worthy of Rumours-era Christine McVie. Despite some duds, mostly from its later period, 1969-1981 makes its case for this enduring and sometimes classic outfit. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Great Sound.......2007-04-14

Karen Carpenter had a great voice, and here is a big collection of songs from this brother and sister team.To name the best songs from this duo is difficult because there is so many to choose from. But a definite favorite is Top Of The World.I love that tune.
But a song that realy established them was (They Long To Be) Close To You.That song is about their most known song and i love it.There is a great assortment of songs here like We've Only Just Begun.I wont go through all the songs as The Carpenters were consistently good.

4 out of 5 stars Teach Your Parents Well.......2006-11-22

My mother loved The Carpenters. On long road trips, we'd constantly flip over the "Now & Then" 8-track, listening to both sides. I knew the song transitions so well that I could sing the correct pitch for the next song before it began. If you sing one lyric from that album, I can sing the next. The Carpenters' songs are haunting, and I'm not sure altogether the most sound basis for framing a child's concepts of love. From "This Masquerade" to "I Can't Make Music" to "The End of the World" to "Superstar" to "Yesterday Once More." People who think The Carpenters just sang watered-down covers and lightweight songs probably have not listened to them closely.

My older sister was a member of her high school homecoming court. She was asked to sing at the homecoming assembly and she chose to sing The Carpenters' version of "Sometimes." I learned most of my facial singing expressions from her and have always tried to emulate what she could do with her eyes. If you were around in the 1970s or 80s, you are probably familiar with "Sometimes." But even if you know the song, here are some uncommon things you may not have noticed at first. It is unusual for a pop song because it begins with no vocals and a minute and thirty second piano introduction, arranged and played masterfully by Juilliard trained Richard Carpenter, highlighting the thoughtful melody lines, with excellent chord choices & changes and ebbing tempos. Most songs have multiple verses and a repeated chorus. Karen Carpenter's butter-melting tones and heart-piercing ability to convey the thoughts & feelings of this song did not require repetition. The following lyrics are sung only once, then the song concludes.

"Sometimes not often enough we reflect upon the good things, and those thoughts always center around those we love
And I think about those people who mean so much to me, and for so many years have made me so very happy
And I count the times I have forgotten to say, 'Thank you', and just how much I love them"

Parents should consider the music they play around their children, because their children may be effected by it.

"And you, of tender years can't know the fears that your elders grew by
And so please help them with your youth, they seek the truth before they can die
Teach your parents well, their children's hell will slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams, the one they picks, the one you'll know by . . . and know they love you"

It doesn't matter if your parents came from the lush and pensive lands of The Carpenters or "from the lands of the ice and snow, from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow," if you listen closely to their music, you may discover magical things about them. And despite what Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young suggest, you may even learn to understand some of "the fears your elders grew by."

"How soft your fields so green, can whisper tales of gore, of how we calmed the tides of war . . .
So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins, for peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing."

5 out of 5 stars Yesterday Once More.......2006-08-10

I get so choked up when I hear The Carpenters. It was my mother's favorite group and she used to play their records day and night and sing along in perfect harmony with Karen Carpenter while I sat there looking dreamily at my mother thinking she was the most beautiful woman in the world.

My mother, just like Karen Carpenter, passed away at a relatively young age; 38. Sometimes it's hard for me to believe that I have surpassed that age. I think what makes me the saddest about my mother's passing, is that I no longer remember what her voice sounded like. Unfortunately, a box of tapes that actually had my mother's voice on them got misplaced so I remember my mother through this collection.

And depending on the day, I sometimes cry and I sometimes laugh, but I always smile and remember those precious few years I had with the most beautiful woman in the world.

Aside from the Milwaukee trio's 1981 debut, the Violent Femmes have made a career of tacking one or two great songs onto otherwise mediocre albums--so this 1993 best-of is perfect for consumers. It has all the good stuff, from the retro radio hour staples "Blister in the Sun" and "Gone Daddy Gone," plus the creepy murder-suicide story "Country Death Song," the should've-been-a-hit "American Music" and ephemera like live versions of "Add It Up" and "Kiss Off." With Gordon Gano's never-aging teen whine and a crack rhythm section, the Femmes have had brief moments as America's best rock & roll band. This collection captures some of them. --Steve Knopper

4 out of 5 stars Best of Violent Femmes?.......2006-10-29

You know what's interesting about this compilation is that while usually this sort of thing is used for people to "sell" new fans to the band, this "best of" seems more geared towards people who are already fans of the Violent Femmes. For one thing, the main versions are not always used in favor on here. For instance, "I Held Her in My Arms" and "Lies" appear in different versions than what are on "Blind" and "3." Also, the debut classics "Add It Up" (an old B-side on an import single) and "Kiss Off" are in live versions, in favor of the original. These are both good in their own right, but it seems somewhat enigmatic to introduce casual fans that way. Also, the fact that three of these "tracks" are more or less more spoken messages than actual songs. Not only that, but "Nightmares" was a genuine college radio hit and was omitted, although so was "Children of the Revolution," although maybe I'd understand excluding a T. Rex cover. Not because it's not the greatest, but to include more original VF material.

Some of that is great. There's the early demo recording of "Waiting on the Bus" as well as later fare like "I Hate the TV", "36-24-36" and "Dance, M.F., Dance," a cover from an obscure Milwakee band.

That being said, some of this is for unexperienced Femmes fans. "American Music" is possibly their most famous non-debut song and arguably the one that was most successful in its time. "Blister in the Sun" and "Gone Daddy Gone" are classics and are good introductions to the band as well. Then there's the more surprising stuff like the free jazz of "Black Girls" and others. It is mostly pretty good, even if some selections are lighweight curiosities. With this in mind, I suggest you try the band's debut and, if you like this variety, its follow-up, "Hallowed Ground" (which has "Black Girls", "Jesus...", and "CDS.")

But if you're a casual fan and want a more conventional approach you may want to check out "Debacle" or its sequel, "Permanent Record", which represents three albums and a soundtrack song that came out after this release.

5 out of 5 stars Oh what an album........2006-04-17

I heard "blister in the sun" from a mixed CD my friend gave me and I decided to check out the femmes. This is the first CD I bought of theres, and I absolutely loved it. After i bought this CD I pursued my interst in the femmes, I now own every single one of their CDs as well as merchandise. The femmes aren't for everyone, they have a very unique sound and painfully honest lyrics--but those who will like them will love this album. It is a compilation of the best of all their music.

5 out of 5 stars so good and way ahead of their time.......2006-03-11

HEY... If you're not already, start listening to the Violent Femmes! This collection, along with the reissue of their first album (at least), is a must-have for any fan. And, to all you "Emo" people, pick this CD up first. Teen angst and policital activism all wrapped up in on CD.

It's a shame that Merrily We Roll Along was such a flop on Broadway, for it contains some of Stephen Sondheim's best, brightest, and brassiest music. The reasons have been well documented: a youthful, inexperienced cast; cheesy sets and costumes; and, most of all, a confusing plot structure that starts in 1980 with bitter, cynical characters and winds its way backward to 1955, when a high school graduating class is dreaming of making its mark on the world. The main focus is on three friends (Jim Walton, Ann Morrison, and Lonny Price) who share musical ambitions but are gradually driven apart by the turbulence and fragmentation of their lives and the America around them. (You'll also hear a pre-Seinfeld Jason Alexander, and even a young chorus girl named Liz Callaway.) Sondheim almost imperceptibly reworks his themes as his characters develop, and the score includes the infectious "Old Friends," the driving title tune, the ballad "Not a Day Goes By," and "Our Time," an uplifting anthem of hope when performed out of the show's context, but emotionally devastating within it. And if the backward structure--inherited from George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart's 1934 version of the show--really bothers you, you can run it almost completely chronologically by reprogramming the CD. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing!.......2007-06-24

I'll admit, I was completely ignorant of musicals and of Stephen Soundheim until my son joined his high school theater troupe and he got the role of "Terry". I reluctantly attended, only because I wanted to see my son's performance, and prepared myself for what I thought would be a boring night. Boy, was I wrong! Not only was it amazing but my 10 & 8 yr. old daughters, whom I thought were going to be whining after 10 minutes, were enthralled too! I didn't realize my son's theatre troupe was so amazingly talented, the musical was so professionally performed I felt I was at a broadway show! The music is wonderful and entertaining! We have been transformed by this. We now own the soundtrack and often we catch ourselves humming various parts of it often! Especially love "Franklin Shepard, Inc.", which isn't on this copy. You've got to see this to appreciate it!

While I have never seen this show, I picked up this remastered version of the original 1981 production due to my interest in Mr. Sondheim's scores. An interesting premise - to stage a show in reverse - but the score doesn't captivate like "Company" or "Sweeney Todd", two of my favorite scores ever. Still, a worthy effort w/ a few standout songs:

Old Friends
Not A Day Goes By
Our Time

5 out of 5 stars Sondheim Had a Good Thing Going.......2005-02-08

Several years ago I saw a college production of MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG. At the time, I knew the musical had been a flop in its original run on Broadway; I went to see the production only because two friends of mine were playing the leading roles of Frank and Charlie. But while watching the show I realized that MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG has a great score -- probably one of the greatest of any unsuccessful musical. "Like It Was," "Not a Day Goes By," and "Good Thing Going" are all haunting ballads, unusually emotional for Sondheim, while "Now You Know" and (especially) "Franklin Shepard, Inc." are patter songs in Sondheim's typical, brilliant style. Even the school "commencement song," "The Hills of Tomorrow," is memorable, as are the ensemble numbers "Rich and Happy" and "Merrily We Roll Along," not to mention the moving anthem "Our Time." Both the title song and "Old Friends" are woven through this backwards-told tale of disillusionment, recurring several times as commentary on the action.
Another original idea was to have all the roles played by very young actors -- teenagers, in fact. (Sondheim and director Harold Prince must have thought that a story about broken youthful ideals would be even more affecting if the cast itself was youthful.) Fortunately, Jim Walton, Lonny Price, and Ann Morrison as the three "old friends" INHABIT their roles to a degree that few mature actors could hope to match, while singing with confidence; Walton's "Not a Day Goes By" in particular is beautifully sung. At times, it is truly hard to believe that these performers are little more than children, so thoroughly assured do they sound. And the choral work is stunning; the chorus, in fact, may be the real star of the recording. Those unfamiliar with MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG and this original Broadway cast recording don't know what they are missing!

4 out of 5 stars A detailed comparison of the two versions of this CD.......2004-02-25

Here, I will give a detailed comparison between the two version of this musical available, character by character, song by song. To begin...

Frank Shepard: Jim Walton (OBC) has undeniable potential, and does especially well in "Old friends", the original Frank version of "Not a day goes by". Still, his performance has serious flaws, and his "Our Time" in particular is painful to listen to. By contrast, Malcolm Gets (NBC) was quieter and subtler in the role, but "Our Time" is the character's most important moment, and he handles it terrifically. His spectacular vocals and soaring idealism contrast sharply with Walton's shrill, shallow delivery.

Charley Kringas: Lonny Price (OBC) is spectacular as Charley. Since Charley remains an uncorrupted idealist at the play's "end", casting a teenager in the role was actually a wise move, and despite his lack of experience, Price turns out one of the most skillful performances in all of Broadway history. I tell you, the kid's a prodigy! Adam Heller (NBC) was adequate in the revival (personally, I'd love to see him do Buddy in "Follies"), but most of Charley's personality is expressed in subtext, and without the tragic complexity Price gave him, he seemed rather boring.

Mary Flynn: Ann Morrison (OBC) is quite talented, and did an excellent portrayal of an angsty teen late in the play, particularly in the second half of "Our Time". Still, she simply sounded too upbeat to be convincing as a cynical middle-aged drunk. Amy Ryder (NBC), on the other hand, is perfectly suited to the role; she has a wonderfully expressive voice and does an excellent job of subtly altering her personality over time.

Beth Spencer: This role requires a measure of overacting, but Sally Klein (OBC) goes so over the top it's not even funny. Anne Bobby (NBC), on the other hand, kept her control and gave a charmingly flamboyant and very human performance.

Gussie Carnigie: Michelle Pawk (NBC) sounds like a real Broadway headliner, and she is just delicious as the show's evil seductress. Terry Finn (OBC) had only a brief dialogue bit on the CD, and she couldn't even handle that without making a fool of herself.

Joe Josephson: Famed comedian Jason Alexander (OBC) made this character funny and charming. Paul Harmon (NBC) was intensely annoying.

As for the individual songs...

Merrily we Roll Along: The song has excellent lyrics, deep and introspective, but in the OBC you can't hear them because the obnoxious Geoffrey Horne is shouting something pointless over them.

Like it was

Amy Ryder sounded far more authentic here than Ann Morrison, although I will say Lonny Price handled his dialogue bits extremely well.

Franklin Shepard INC.

Adam Heller's diction was better in this wordy monologue-song, but I prefer Price's more passionate version.

Old Friends

The OBC has better peformances by everyone except Ann Morrison, as well as two very interesting extra verses tacked on the end.

Not a day goes by

This song was blessed with two great performances, and I honestly can't decide on a favorite between Jim Walton's gorgeous vocals and Anne Bobby's intense acting.

Now you know

The OBC did a great job of setting the mood for this number, and Walton and Morrison are at their best. Still, Amy Ryder did a decent job of salvaging the watered-down, badly edited NBC version.

It's a hit

The OBC cast were much more interesting in this number, and some key material was cut in the NBC anyway.

Good thing going

Heller was by no means bad in this number, but Price blew him out of the water.

Bobby and Jackie and Jack

The NBC is far better; Sally Klein was at her worst here, and Lonny Price, for all his many talents, is no comedian.

Not a day goes by (reprise)

Due to an asinine recording job, you can barely hear Amy Ryder in this number. Thankfully, Ann Morrison does a fabulous performance here.

Opening Doors

Jason Alexander sings beautifully and projects a loveably pushy personality in this montage. Let me say delicately that Harmon does neither of these things. The rest of the cast is excellent in either versioon, except for Jim Walton, who foreshadows the problems with his next song in an unsubtle, extremely annoying performance.

Our Time

If not for Jim Walton, the OBC would have this one in the bag; they close it with a haunting ensemble chorus led by Ann Morrison that gives the song a beautifully profound feel. However, Walton was horrendous in the first half of the song, and because he was so utterly outclassed by Malcolm Gets' exquisite performance, the song overall is far more effective in the NBC.

Finally, as for the songs that were in both versions...

The Hills of Tomorrow (OBC)

A lovely song and an excellent opening. I appreciate its importance to the plot as the first song Frank ever wrote, but I think reprising it to close the show was not as effective as simply closing with "Our Time".

That Frank (NBC)

Weak as a plot climax. I understand that in the show, it was merely intended to "set up" a dramatic confrontation in the book scenes, but on the CD it was a noticeable letdown. Still, Amy Ryder's antics as Mary were fun and powerful.

Rich and Happy (OBC)

A powerful and disturbing climax and an excellent alternative to the shallow "That Frank", even if Walton could have performed it better.

Growing up (NBC)

A complex and thought-provoking song with a beautiful melody, performed extremely well by Malcolm Gets and Michele Pawk. I personally think it serves a necessary role in the play, and I'm very glad they added it to fill that void. It gives us a chance to see into Frank's mind, something none of the other songs do. Gussie's later reprise of this song, however, is watered down and, despite its beauty, completely unnecessary.

The Blob (NBC)

A satirically funny and mildly disturbing song. Part of it appears in the OBC, but Gussie's cynically witty second verse really brings it to life.

In general, I actually recommend you get both version if you get either. Each one contains wonderful moments the other one screws up. If you must get only one, though, get the NBC. It may not be as good is some places, but it has fewer flaws.

3 out of 5 stars It's okay, but..........2003-08-25

You're better off with the 1994 York Theater Off-Brodway version with Malcom Gets...while this one is pleasent at best, it's much too clunky and all over the place to really, really enjoy...the songs that were cut from this version like "Rich and Happy" are genuienly solid, but there are far too few of them to make up for the lack of fluidness that accompanies this version. Many people complain that the new version is "too artifical" with it's use of (minimum) synthesizers, and that the cast isn't adequate enough to handle the score, but I disagree...the cast for this version is simply much too young and inexperienced to really get a grasp on what it's like to play middle aged cynics. On the other hand, the '94 cast is well-equipped to handle the their roles both emotionaly and mentally. That's not to say that this version is completely devoid of any redeeming qualities...it's just far too overrated to earn the place as the definitive recording of Merrily...start with the '94 version, and if you like that one, move on to this one...the former is much more solid and fluid. There is talk of a staged reading this fall, which will hopefully lead to a full-fledged return of this extremely underrated masterpiece...a return more akin to it's latter day revival, and not the original's choppy performance.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic, a must have.......2006-11-10

i been with kim wilde ever since she started, this girl is great, and she is sooooo cute too, :) a collections of hits you cannot put down and also contains the smash hit single "in my life". i think the song "in my life" is a new direction for her. we need more like that, it's a postive message. yayyy, in my life, everything is feeling good, in my life, feeling like you know it should.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best compilations ever!.......2006-10-31

Kim Wilde was definitely one of the best artists of the 80's and 90's. Most of the music today is just unbearable or annoying, which is why I only listen to CDs in my car, most of which are 80's and early 90's CDs. And this collection of Kim Wilde's songs span from her early career to her late career and in chronological order so you can hear the evolution of her voice as it matures and changes, but each song is amazing to hear. You have to listen to these songs in your car or on a system with some bass as it definitely makes the songs sound even more incredible. This compilation is defeinitely worth getting. I was a fan of her "You Keep Me Hanging On", and always wondered what her other songs were like, and then one day I bought the CD and listened to the entire CD in my car and fell in love with the entire CD, except for 2 songs at the end, but the 15 other songs are all worthy hits.

5 out of 5 stars Mainstream pop was once good?! *gasps*.......2006-03-12

Yeah, I said it. This is mainstream pop. It is good.

This CD really comes to show how much the music industry has deteriorated in the past two decades. Why are talentless camera-hogs like Britney and Jessica constantly getting airplay in lieu of Kim Wilde, I ask? I could think endlessly, for hours, trying to find an answer to this puzzling question, but still probably couldn't. It's an enigma.

Anyways, I had never actually heard of Wilde until a few years ago - and I discovered her music in two different places. The first was through the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, in which "Kids in America" became a standout favorite of mine, and the second was a cover of "You Keep Me Hangin' On" by the Norwegian band Theatre of Tragedy. I found both songs to be incredibly addictive, so I decided I would try to look for a CD of hers, which brought me here.

The Singles Collection includes 17 excellent pop tracks (or a combination of punk-pop, dancepop and soft ballads) from the 80s and early 90s. Beginning with the faster-paced anthems like "Kids in America" and "Chequered Love", and ending with the calmer, smoother sounds of "In My Life" and the "If I Can't Have You" cover, this compilation offers an excellent insight into the changes of Kim's character and voice over the years. Meanwhile, we have the energetic dancefloor hits "Never Trust a Stranger" and fan favorite "You Came", as well as downtuned ballads like "Child Come Away" and the overlooked "Cambodia" that make you wonder why Kim never completely broke through to the American mainstream.

In conclusion, I think any fan of 80s music should track this down. Although Madonna was the prime diva of the decade, Kim Wilde makes a nice entrance into second place. Classic stuff.

The idiots at the US Post Office gave me a tracking number and said this was delivered, but the 8 dollar per hour fools did not actually deliver it.

They send me endless email responses telling me they will look into it. They answer my phone calls and tell me the same thing.

I don't trust the USPS. Send my next package with UPS.

1 out of 5 stars Laughable..........2005-08-29

Oh my God...I'm 21 years old, so I wasn't even born when this stuff came out. But I do recognise a lack of talent when I hear it! Kim Carnes has such a raspy, gurgly voice...she sounds like a sandpapered foghorn! This music just makes me laugh my @ss off every time I hear it, so I'm giving it five stars for its unintended comedic value! Lack of talent is hilarious!

The Blasters were truly original. Many people think of them as only a Rockabilly band (which they did extraordinarily well), but as this set confirms, they blazed a wide path. Truly a great band and a great CD set to showcase that. I'm very pleased with the purchase.

Since its debut in 1981, London's and the world's longest-running musical still fills seats in a dozen theaters worldwide. Uncountable recastings and reorchestrations later, Andrew Lloyd Webber's adaptation of T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats strives to please the ears of ever-new generations. This is the original cast recording, and it retains a freshness from the still-recent opening, its novelty untarnished by decades of success. Also, the abundance of "names"--both singers and musicians--makes this one of the high-class musical recordings of all time. Elaine Paige rose to stardom as Grizabella with the hit "Memory"; at the time, though, bigger names were Wayne Sleep, Paul Nicholas, and Brian Blessed. Sarah Brightman and Bonnie Langford are also on the cast list. Lloyd Webber himself plays keyboards and the impressive roster of session musicians includes Barbara Thompson and David Locke. Lloyd Webber, well versed in the practice of "auto-quotation," can always look back to this work for cat-chy material: the Overture, "Old Gumbie Cat," "Rum Tum Tugger," and "Mr. Mistoffelees"--the list of good tunes and themes goes on and on. This remains a fun listening experience, even for those few who still haven't caught the show. It's also available in a highlights version. --Yngvil V.G.

5 out of 5 stars Enough of this Broadway vs London stuff. Let's add Australia to the picture.......2006-07-02

Like most people, I've been torn between London and Broadway for a while. I'll admit, I'm fond of both London and Broadway, but some songs I like on Broadway more than London, and vice versa. However, when I bought the Australian recording, it turned into my favorite CATS recording, hands down. They have EVERY song in there, (Growltiger's Last Stand, and Battle of the Pekes and Pollicles) Anyhow, here's my biased opinion on which of the three recordings dominate in certain songs.

Overture - The overture is pretty much the same

Jellicle Song for Jellicle Cats - London

Naming of Cats - Australia

Invitation to the Jellicle Ball - Broadway

Old Gumbie Cat - London but Australia's is pretty darn good

Rum Tum Tugger - I'm not very fond of London's version or Broadway's. I'd have to say Australia, but Broadway is just as good.

Grizabella - London

Bustopher Jones - London

Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer - Australia. This version has a very interesting Mungo and Rumpel

Old Deuteronomy - London or Broadway

Jellicle Ball - London

Grizabella: The Glamour Cat - Tie

Memory - Okay, Elaine Paige is about as good as it gets. But Debbie Byrne from Australia delivers a heart felt Memory also.

Gus: The Theatre Cat - Australia

Growltiger's Last Stand/The Ballad of Billy McCaw - All are good

Macavity: The Mystery Cat - Australia

Mr. Mistoffelees - Australia. The Australian Rum Tum Tugger is a lot better. And while I'm a huge Sarah Brightman fan, and you can hear her overpowering in this song, I still say Australia wins here.

Memory - Moment of truth. I love Elaine Paige. Her Memory is as good as it gets. However, some would say that Elaine's version is too soft and sweet, and isn't bitter and cold enough. This song could go both ways. Betty Buckley certainly expressed rage and power in this song, but maybe too much. In my personal opinon, Elaine's version is too soft, and Buckley's version is too cold. Debbie Byrne is a perfect medium, and she expresses remorse, sorrow, pain, anger, and loneliness in perfect harmony. I'd have to say Australia.

Journey to the Heaviside Layer - Not much of a difference. Tie between all three.

Ad-Dressing of Cats - Broadway. THANK GOD FOR KEN PAGE.

when I got this CD i was expecting more from it.I knew how all the london version songs sounded before i got the CD,but the reason I bought the CD was because I wanted to hear the big cut out of the jellicle ball.I heard the songs the first time from my computer and noticed a big part was missing from the jellicle ball and one could tell by listening that it was cut from the recording.About two years after that at a yard sale I stumbled upon an unopened original london cast record of cats.I bought and i brought to my friends to hear it on his record player and i found the missing part from the jellicle ball on the record.since i didn't have a record player and records sound bad anyway I ordered it and I was expecting the complete version.I was wrong. The jellicle ball part was still cut from the remastered version of the CD.I was confused and disappointed.I thought why would they cut a big part out of the remastered version if it had been there to begin with from the original recording.Unfortunately I don't think i will ever have it on CD because the only original recording of the london cast is on that remastered version.I'm not sure if can get my hands on a CD recording before they released the remastered version but I'll try.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Janis Ian.......2007-05-12

I recently heard Janis on a Saturday Night Live Show from 1976 and I bought this CD and have since purchased a second CD of her's. Her lyrics are profound and this lady can sing! I would recommend this CD to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Souvenirs.......2007-01-03

The title says it all. This is a great Cd of an Artist and time mostly forgotten.

3 out of 5 stars great but we need more.......2006-10-12

tough to give more stars to this collection when it includes only two songs from her finest album: Between the Lines (two great songs but there are at least another three songs that shouldve been included) bottom line this shouldve been a two disc set, whats there is great though

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant but sometimes controversial folk-rock singer.......2005-08-25

Janis Ian began her recording career with a song (Society's child) about an inter-racial relationship and followed up with an album of protest songs. Those recordings are not included on this compilation covering her later recordings, but they can be found separately.

Between 1974 and 1979, Janis recorded four classic albums (Stars, Between the lines, Aftertones, Night rains) from which most of the tracks here are taken. Those albums featured many of the great songs we remember her for including Jesse (a top ten American hit via a Roberta Flack cover), At seventeen (a top five American hit for Janis), Love is blind (a Japanese number one hit), Will you dance (another big Japanese hit), Fly too high (featured on the soundtrack of Foxes and a minor UK hit) and The other side of the sun (another minor UK hit).

Following those albums, Janis diversified into acting and writing but continued to record great music. When Canada legalized single-sex marriages, Janis seized on the opportunity to marry her lesbian partner there in 2003.

Forget all the controversy and just listen to a brilliant folk-rock singer who never achieved the same level of success as Joan Baez, Judy Collins or Joni Mitchell but who certainly deserves to be considered alongside those outstanding singers. If you enjoy their music, give Janis a listen. This compilation provides a great introduction to her music.

5 out of 5 stars Souvenirs - Best of the "Best ofs".......2005-02-11

This really is an excellent "Greatest Hits" collection! It includes the very best from each album and even "Mechanical Telephone" an excellent song from Janis' quirky "Uncle Wonderful" '80's album. I am so glad Janis included "Will You Dance" and "Love is Blind" in this collection. They were huge chart toppers in Japan. The "Up 'til Now" 17 Greatest hits album had to be tailored twice with alternate cuts to cater to Japanese audiences. The only suggestion I could make to improve this album was to add "Restless Eyes", not instead of, but in addition to "Passion Play" which is also an excellent song from that album! Time constraints probably had something to do with that decision. The pictures of Janis are gorgeous too! Buy this CD and you will probably start building a Janis Ian collection!

Album Description

Dokken achieved global fame in 1983 as one of the most successful bands to emerge from Los Angeles' era-defining metal scene. They'd originally formed in Southern California in the late '70s, and went on to have initial success in Germany, where the group recorded their debut, Breaking The Chains, in 1981. Back in U.S. after finishing the album, Don remembers, "playing clubs in the L.A. music scene alongside groups such as Van Halen and Quiet Riot" while they shopped for a U.S. deal. Elektra signed them in '82, and they went on to multi-platinum success. When Don Dokken was revisiting the original multi-track tapes for a 25th anniversary edition of Breaking The Chains last year, he came across the long-forgotten masters from those seminal pre-Elektra gigs. Previously unissued with three previously unreleased songs, they present one of metal's most iconic bands at the hungry and powerful moment just before their career became legend.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Finally the real Dokken is on display. Shades of what might have been!!.......2007-06-21

Amazing! Powerful! Dirty! Raw! In other words...all the things Dokken SHOULD have been. Recorded during their first album era, this is a real, honest and incredible recording!! The sound is first rate! Thick and nasty! It is a gem and is worth the price of admission!

So what is so great about this and why didn't Dokken ever deliver like this later in their career? It can't be overlooked that the main difference between this recording and the other Dokken live recordings and tours is the simple fact that Don Dokken PLAYED GUITAR! I love George Lynch...he is incredible...but having that second guitar made all the difference in the world! They sound so much more powerful and full! Listen to the intro to "Young Girls" you can't do that with one guitar!! And "Breaking the Chains" has that classic metal CHUNK CHUNK that the later versions didn't. After the first album and tour Don stopped playing guitar and the sound thinned out and they were never the same again! Also...the vocals are dead on! That also suffered in later tours.

ANY fan of Dokken..but especially the early fans...MUST have this amazing piece of history. I am SOOOO glad it was found and really returns Dokken to the place they should have been all along!

GREAT GREAT GREAT STUFF!!

5 out of 5 stars What a great quality CD!.......2007-05-26

Don Dokken is a class act....when he puts something out it's certain to be of good quality. He treats his fans great. This is one of the best SOUNDING CONCERTS I have ever heard. The QUALITY is A++++. It makes you feel like you are standing at some European gig in 1981 - I love all the in between 'pep-talking' that Don does. The George guitar solo's are outstanding. Mick's drums sound amazing. It's such a nice jewel of a concert - with so many great old Dokken songs (like NIGHT RIDER!), and other unknown's as well. This is a MUST HAVE for any 80's hard rock fan!!!
Thank you DON for putting out such a fine quality CD!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-04-29

This is a great CD for Dokken fans. They sound great and you get to hear all of the golden oldies from back in the day. It was a very pleasant surprise.

5 out of 5 stars Shows Early Promise.......2007-04-10

From Conception:Live 1981 is all that Don stated and more. He said it was a "raw"and "powerful". He's not kidding! The music is full of energy and showed the promise of things that were yet to come. Easily, this CD stands up to the music on "Tooth and Nail" and "Back for the Attack". If you liked either of these 2 albums, you will definitly love the music here.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2007-04-01

What makes this recording impressive is that it was during the time Randy Rhoades was emerging as the next big thing. George Lynch was equally impressive by these samples. I will definitely get this cd.

Newman's music is both rousing and plaintive. "One More Day" is worth the price of admission alone. Quite simply, beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Ragtime (1981 Film Soundtrack).......2007-02-20

Beautiful music. It sets a mood throughout that is rather sad no matter what the words say.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful achievement .......2006-02-25

The excelent Milos Forman timepiece on the 20's based on the Doctorow novel has a marvelous musical translation in this soundtrack close to perfection. It gets the time and mood of the movie, and reflects its main dramatic moments. I would dare to say that this soundtrack is one of the finest coming out from a movie of the 80's. Besides, it sounds great in this digitally remastered version. Do not hesitate to get it. It's a real beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant........2005-12-28

I first came across this soundtrack when looking for Donald O'Connor songs - I'm a big fan of his, and I'm trying to track down all the songs he's ever recorded. It just so happens he has one of the most delightful songs on this soundtrack, "I could love a Million Girls". Apparently it's from a Disney film called Summer Magic, but I don't think Disney would approve of how dirty this song is if you think about it! Donald O'Connor was around 55 or so when he recorded this song, so his voice isn't as great as it was once, but he still does a fantastic job.

Now, onto the other songs. "Ragtime" (the song listed on the soundtrack) is hauntingly beautiful - it really captures the feeling and mood of the time, and puts you right back there. Same with most of the other "score" tracks. This is definately one of the best scores out there, and it's a pity it didn't do better. I guess it's almost ahead of it's time a little, considering this was the time period that gave us films like The Blues Brothers and other such early SNL comedies which didn't require scores like Ragtime needed. It really should've done better, but for now enjoy the soundtrack because I doubt you'll get another release of it!
