San Francisco's anonymous Residents are a concept band with a penchant for concept albums. This equally frightening and funny grab bag contains the remastered contents of Residue, the group's 1983 collection of outtakes and compilation tracks, along with odds and sods from the later '80s. The early material will please Residents purists who prefer their predigital primitivism. But it's the two later song cycles--"The Replacement" and "Safety Is a Cootie Wootie"--that really startle us through a postrock, pre-electronica combination of terror, absurdity, and childlike fun. Even their parodies of easy targets like Elvis Presley ("Jailhouse Rock") or the Monkees ("Daydream Believer") have as much to do with underlining the cultural power of pop music as with inspiring a few cheap laughs. And if you've ever wondered what free-jazzer Sun Ra and soul boss Barry White might have in common, check out "Daydream in Space." --Richard Gehr

4 out of 5 stars Uneven, but great when it's great.......2001-12-27

This is a CD version of their Resideux album, which only contained the first dozen track sor so. Oddly enough, the added tracks are mostly much, much better, and makes Deux a definite improvement over the first one.

The Toddler's trilogy, the San Francisco songs and Space Is the Place are all top drawer Residents, and they each occupy lofty spots among my list of favorites of all the Rez's works. But when I play the CD, I have to stay close to the skip button to pass over throwaways like Kamikaze Lady and Jailhouse Rock.

One of the best things about "real" Residents albums is their ability to stay within a consistent style but still milk great variety within that style, so the album has a lot of variety but still sounds unified. Being a collection of residue, this CD doesn't have that, and styles jump pretty drastically in some places, making the already alarming music even more so.

However, it would have been a shame to not let the best tracks here go unreleased, so I'm willing to put up with a little grab-bagness to get to hear them.

4 out of 5 stars Like Your Head in a Microwave Too Long...........2001-09-08

As I listen to this CD and write this review, I can only tell you that listening to this CD will give you some laughs, raise any eyebrow or two, and never disappoint. It's like your head in a microwave too long...bits and pieces of raw material to be scraped off. This CD is just that: RAW and no longer a part of any cohesive whole. So turn out the lights, get blunted and listen to this.

4 out of 5 stars Menace, melody, and surreal verse worthy of Dr. Seuss........1998-10-10

While the Residents' primary focus has always been the concept album, the group inevitably generates material that strays beyond conceptual restraints. In 1983, twelve choice out-takes, B-sides, and compilation tracks were released on LP as RESIDUE. RESIDUE DEUX augments the LP with eleven rarities, including two suites from the band's late '70s prime, "The Replacement," and "Safety Is a Cootie Woodie," a haunting meditation on the terrors of childhood. While RESIDUE aspired only to provide a home for "orphan songs," the updated RESIDUE DEUX takes on the character of an unintentionally revealing retrospective. An early '80s shift to digital working methods marked the loss of the exhilarating, instinctive primitivism that distinguished the pre MOLE SHOW Residents. The band's subsequent high-tech period is represented by four lackluster selections, including polite covers of the Monkees' "Daydream Believer," and Sun Ra's "Space Is the Place." The elision of the original liner notes suggests Residential reluctance to underscore the weakness of their post-1983 material by including recording dates. A few latter-day clinkers aside, RESIDUE DEUX showcases a mind-bending confluence of menace, melody, and surreal verse worthy of Dr. Seuss. --Michael Draine (appeared first in EXPOSE #16)

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing!.......2002-02-04

I must say this NOT an album I go nuts over. In my opinion the originals are far better than what Mark Gage has done here. The songs sound much less musical and more electronic, if you get me? Listen to this before you hear the originals. I would much rather hear the originals of these songs. This is OK, though. Atleast it is different. Something that I believe Magna Carta is always striving for.

5 out of 5 stars This is NOT a compilation album!.......2002-02-01

Vapourspace is the artist name of Mark Gage. What he has done for Sonic Residue is something I never even heard of before. He took songs of several Magna Carta bands, and without making any new music himself, he started mixing and mixing until something completely different came out. The whole of the album sounds more or less like a spacy techno-album, made out of progressive rock songs!
For example, the first track from Attention Deficit, who are a three-piece consisting of drums, bass and guitar, but now it seems to be all synthesizers... Then there's a track form the Explorer's Club, Time Enough, which has a great section of consecutive solo's, but now, the music is filtered in such a that the solo's come out even better. As a final example there's the song Kansas from Steve Walsh' solo album. It sounds much darker than the original, almost as if this is how it should have sounded.
As you can see, this is not some sort of compilation of "Best of Magna Carta", but an album with completely new music. The album also contains a CD with the original songs, so you can still compare, even if you don't have the original albums.

Album Description

A cross-over artist defying definition, Amy X Neuburg twists multiple musical styles—from cabaret and hard rock to classical—together into something all her own. Her wildly inventive lyrics range from the poignant to the absurd, touching on social and political issues in surprisingly personal ways.

The 12 songs on "Residue" capture the spirit of Amy's live performances, where she loops and processes her voice, accompanying herself with rhythms and textures using electronic drums. The madness of "Residue" includes a comic soliloquy on stoned late-night shopping, hard-driving declarations on God, a lovely tender ballad "Finally Black," an ethereal telephone conversation between the artist and herself, and, at the peak of "The Tattoo Song," a demonic, cackling, three-octave "Ahhhhhhhhh" juxtaposed with a saintly ninth century Lacrimosa chorus.

5 out of 5 stars Intense, original musical delight.......2006-04-02

"Residue" was plugged by Amazon on a page for something else strange I bought, one of those "you may also like" or "people who bought this CD also bought" ads. I read the description and it sounded interesting, so I bought it on spec. As a famous dead Chicagoan one said, HOLY COW! She is sort of a Laurie Anderson for the 21st Century, only with a classically trained voice. There are elements of rock, minimalism, 50s and 60s electronic music, Broadway, old-fashioned country & western, Wagnerian wailing soprano, religious hymns and chant and, yes, the adored Ms. Anderson herself. It is fascinating to hear her pour out both her gutsy and fragile sides with such novel expression. This is the freshest thing I've heard since I first encountered Michael Gordon. For people who want their ears and brains challenged while having sonic fun at the same time, this disk is a must-buy. Her three earlier CDs, all from the 90s, are available from independent dealers affiliated with Amazon. I await their arrival.

5 out of 5 stars the sounds of visionary voice from an electronic perspective.......2005-02-06

Amy X Neuburg is so cool & hip & brilliant! I first found out about her because she performed in an avant-garde classical music festival in NYC, & she stood out to me because her personality is very energetic & her music ideas are so unique. The music on this cd is so intricately, perfectly composed! Her lyrics are always right on in terms of their clever humorous quality AND the sounds of each syllable AND dramatic tension. She really balances everything in the world so well. She did a concert in New Zealand in late 2004, & the review in the newsaper there said that she had apparently gone to the future & taken the future's sounds back to here for her music! She makes music with her voice that I've never heard anything else sound like. & she makes equally brilliant exciting with so much else too!! From static & music to sing while skipping across a bar to a toothbrush & piano, from weird maudlin warbles & mutters to, finally, in harmony with a great whorl of voices, her glistening billowing collected classical voice you could hear over an orchestra (or over a studio full of computers). Monologues, strange telephone calls, meditative monotone chanting, lots of fun. This is one of my favorite CD's! I hope this review has been helpful to you!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing Album.......2004-11-01

This album has the capability of appealing to fans of pop music as much as lovers of the art-rock avant garde. The lyrics are personal yet accessible. The looping and other means of electronic production do nothing but enhance her musical efforts, not distract from them. With such a tremendous voice, hearing six layers of it at the same time translates to an amazing music exerience. The focus really is on the songs, the electronics are there to enrich the compositional intent. You don't feel like you are in the middle of sampler and drum machine circus. Everything is written and performed by her, frequently many layers at a time. It is hard to pinpoint any one artist that would be comparable to her work. There are however, some tracks that could be compared to the work of others ("Residue" has elements of Bobby McFerrin's "Circlesongs," "Finally Black" has the lyrical stylings of an Afro-Celts tune, and "Stone" seems like a Philip Glass opera gone rock). With one person composing, performing, and producing everything, the result is an album full of well-crafted songs that will impress any listener. I can't speak highly enough about it... BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars As good as her live concerts.......2004-06-15

I was waiting for this album, and I'm not disappointed.

Amy X Neuburg performs solo multi-track musical compositions live using her voice, a looping machine, and a drum-pad controlled synthesizer. Each performance starts from nothing and builds as she layers rhythm and harmony into the loop. Add to this her incredible voice and creativity, and you've got something that must be heard.

The Residue album provides studio recordings of a number of songs as I remember them being performed live. I consider this an important quality of the album because part of a live Amy X experience is the awe that one feels realizing that the complex songs are being created and mixed just as one is listening. That said, I feel that many of the recordings have been enhanced or edited in just a few places, which is only to be expected. This is a studio recording, not a live performance. But most of the time the differences from Amy X's incredible live performances are subtle, and improve the song.

The album includes my favorite Amy X songs: Stone, Every Little Stain (the toothbrush song, listen at the beginning), My God (with its a cappella harmony), Insomniac, Just a Sound, and Life Stepped In.

            Product Description

ster-ee-oh-pee-eyt The stereo is an opiate to our imagination. Stereopiate is an abstraction to music as a drug, and is the opus of Nick Roseth. Anesthetizing the masses, music has the power to connect with the human condition and influence all. Over the course of 3 years, Residue was written, performed, produced and mixed by Nick. Residue evokes a contrast between light and dark by joining heavy guitars with melodic vocals. Reminiscent of Tool, Stereopiate uses odd time signatures and polyrhythms to build a long and complete experiment. From the blaring guitars in Hollow Sill to the mesmerizing rhythm in Insecure Fly, Residue blends raw emotion with elaborate musical progressions. The album s cover art completes the experience. Colorful images and heavy contrast allude to the emotion that drives Residue. Nick Roseth, Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, raised in a musical household and introduced to bands like Metallica early on. Influences include Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Deftones, Metallica and Black Sabbath.

4 out of 5 stars Obscure but Good.......2006-07-02

This is an electronica album that grows on you. "Every Day" is the highlight of the album, but most of the rest is quite good also. Whatever happened to these guys?

Warning! Not to be confused with an American rock band of the same name.

              4 out of 5 stars As usual, I am a little behind.......2004-06-12

This is a really good disk. Josee Hurlock's vocals remind me a bit of Sophie Barker (of Zero 7 phase), delicate and beautiful with a touch of soul. The music is well put together with a nice blend of electronica and real instruments. Don't walk, run, and get this disc

              5 out of 5 stars Great production!.......2001-11-15

New to Hefner, I picked up this CD and have been playing it daily ever since. A nice balance of vocal and instrumental tracks with outstanding production throughout, this album is for anyone who likes LHOOQ, Hooverphonic, Thievery Corp., and SOMA Sonic.

5 out of 5 stars The Excellent Hefner.......2001-10-30

I first heard about Hefner from a friend who had brought the album ` Residue'. I went out to buy it not knowing the title and picked up a CD by another band by the same name. DO NOT MAKE THAT MISTAKE!! Its nothing like the Hefner I wanted, dodgy guitars and opera like vocals, terrible. I managed to get a copy of `Residue' from amazon and I knew this was the right one.
It begins with the excellent `Fiendish'which has a beautiful vocal drifting through it over shuffled beats. A great opener. As you get deeper into the album, its difficult to pick out a favourite as each one can capture you onto a different hook, melody or arrangement. I've got to say that the tracks featuring the vocals of Josee Hurlock were outstanding, finding myself hovered over the repeat button wanting more and more. A perfect example is `Dive Into You' which has a Hip Hop beat sample with guitars, strings and of course Josee's entrancing vocal.
A perfect combination of Instrumentals and Songs make this album something to treasure. Its surely only a matter of time before these guys get picked up by the radio stations and Hefner, The Real Hefner, The Producer Hefner, The Excellent Hefner, will be everywhere that a proper band should be......
When are these guys doing a tour. I need to see them live. Almost made the same mistake and went to see the other Hefner. Thank god my Switch Card didn't go through!!

5 out of 5 stars the good hefner cd - buy this!!! you won't regret it :).......2001-09-14

i don't know what the other reviewer was talking about. i liked the vocals on this cd. it reminds me of the stuff nightmares on wax is doing.

a great album for a chill out session!!!

level green is a great tune....
