Awesome to hear the old masters almost live........2007-03-27

It was an awesome experience to hear Ragtime and early blues played by the masters themselves. When you hear the music from their own hands, if not their own pianos, it makes the music immediate, and makes even clearer the stylistic differences of the various American musical pioneers. The sound quality is excellent. I'd strongly recommend this recording to anyone who enjoys early-20th-century jazz.

What a terrific CD. What a joy to add to your life. Everyone should begin their day with this Great Ragtime.We would all be much better.

As a former dancer, Flapper, wth the Charleston in my routine, I do appreciate Great Music. I'm not quite as good as I used to be, but neither are you, Gal. Will be 66 next birthday. Still have the rhythm and love life.

Put some spice in your life and don't let this CD get away. Please, just get it today.

A great introduction and sampling........2005-08-23

Prior to this album, the only ragtime I really knew was "The Entertainer" and "Maple Leaf Rag". I don't know how this album fares for enthusiasts, but I've thoroughly enjoyed it. It introduced me to several different composers. The way the album is organized by giving you a two or three song block by each composer is good. As you listen to this, you can easily hear the different styles from one composer to another. As for the recording quality, I don't have any complaints whatsoever. Each note is clear without much noticable fuzz or hissing. The versions of Scott Joplin's songs are played a bit brash and speedy when compared to Joshua Rifkin, but I think they sound livlier because of it. Overall a solid release.

Obvious choice for the beginner.......2007-03-13

Once you're into Miles Davis, you want it all. His story is a long and complex one, and each recording is an important piece of the puzzle.
On the other hand, let's say you don't want to devote your life to an in-depth study of Miles Davis' life and music. Then you need to have his three best-known, and by most accounts his three best recordings on your shelf. No one would be disappointed with this set of diverse, yet stunningly beautiful albums.

Kind of Cool is the wrong title for an album that caputures the humid warm quality of medeterranian and subtropic athmosphere. As you close your eyes you walk the boulevards of italy brazil or the dark nightclubs of new orleans. A wonderfull rich CD.

This is a terrific "crossover" for Itzhak Perlman........1999-05-13

I have listened to this CD three times now, and each time I'm finding something new. The combination of jazz and violin really works, especially the way the Andre Previn designed his music for Perlman. Some of the sections really "swing." I was listening to this while an electrician was doing some work at the office, and he commented on what great music it was, too -- I rarely get that on most of the classical I listen to.

Album Description

Sean Smith's beautiful compositions and well seasoned quartet are captured by Sony's new Direct Stream Digital (DSD) recording technology on the composer, bassists second solo CD "Poise".

"The quartet recorded this CD live all in the same room which has a beautiful, warm, natural sound", said Smith. "It's all captured by the recording. We didn't have to wear headphones and had great sight lines to see one another. These are luxuries in the studio. There is so much air and life in the result for you to hear".

This recording is one of a few direct to DSD recordings to date, and represents a continuing commitment by Ambient Records of Stamford, Connecticut to make fine recordings of important music available to music listeners.

"I can think of no better way to showcase Sean's composing and bass playing skills than with this revolutionary new technology", said Ambient Records President Mark Conese. "Sony's DSD draws the listener into the music in the same way as a great LP played back on a good turntable used to. The resolution is far beyond that of conventional compact discs and even DVD audio discs".

Lightly Loving Lounge.......2002-06-07

Not Sean's best effort, but the recording quality is out of this world. Kudos to Ambient Records for another brilliant recording. Being a live music fan, Sean's studio work is good but doesn't achieve the greatness we've come to expect on his live performances. My rating is a 4 for performance and a 5+ for recording quality, balancing out to a 5 overall.

Gorgeous Clarity of Sound, Relaxed, Seasoned Playing.......2002-05-02

Sony's really on to something with their Direct Stream Digital recording system. It puts you in the room; you're there. The clarity of the individual instrumental voices is nothing short of astonishing. You're enfolded in that wonderful woody acoustic bass sound, and the drums resonate with every stroke of the ride cymbal.

It was pure genius pairing this system with this group. Tight scarcely describes them. Telepathic is more like it. These musicians are incredibly attuned to each other. What you get is a kind of absolute straight-ahead jazz, the kind that I've wished for for a long time, but seldom found. For it's type, this music is unbeatable. Highest recommendation.
