Terrific Early Effort By An Emerging Superstar!.......2004-09-14
While this is not a typical Ronstadt album, nor one recorded when she was really in her prime, it is a very early solo album that shows her potential for cranking out hits as well of those seemingly effortless and sometimes facile interpretations of other people's songs, showing just how original an artist she was. Like the legendary Johnny Rivers, who always seemed to have a magical touch for turning other people's work into brilliant covers and best-selling albums, Ronstadt here does a star turn with other people's songs. She shows here just how versatile and eclectic her approach to some interesting material could be. From a raucous hit song like Buddy Holly's "Break My Mind" to a sweet and soulful interpretation of the classic country tune, "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" or the plaintive "Number And A Name", Linda pulls out all of the stops, and although the album was panned critically, it was also her first album that really showcased her tremendous eclectic abilities.
Her fans knew what they liked, and they sure seemed to like this terrific collection of so many different genres gathered under a single tent. The opening tune, "Baby, You've been On My Mind", is a haunting, powerfully performed song. Then too, the soulful rendition of "Long Way Around" is powerfully interpreted. "Ill Be Your Baby Tonight" and "It's About Time" are sizzling, as is a well-arranged version of "Dolphins". She soars with an interpretation of the traditional "Bet Nobody Ever Hurt So Bad", and a lovely effort at blue-eyed soul with "Give One Heart". My personal favorite here is "We Need A Whole Lot More Of Jesus (And A Lot Less Rock and Roll", with its satirical messages about the dynamics of being human. All in all, this is a terrific album and one that is really a showcase for Linda at her early best. Enjoy!
An early country-folk-rock classic.......2003-12-24
Linda's recording career has embraced many different styles of music, including her country rock and pop rock music produced by Peter Asher in the seventies and her Great American Songbook albums produced by Nelson Riddle the mid eighties as well as her two traditional folk country Trio albums with Dolly and Emmylou. People who were taken by surprise at the style of the first Trio album would have been less surprised if they had looked at the early recordings of each of the three ladies. This 1969 album was recorded in Nashville in a folk-country-rock style typical of Linda's very early albums.
Silver threads and golden needles has been recorded by Linda Ronstadt at least twice - she re-recorded it for her seventies album, Don't cry now. Wanda Jackson originally recorded this song in the fifties but it was after Skeeter Davis covered it for her debut album that Dusty Springfield discovered it. It then became a top twenty American hit for the Springfields, with Dusty singing. Linda Ronstadt revived the song and also had success with it, though I will always regard the Springfields version as the definitive one.
There are two Bob Dylan covers here - Baby you've been on my mind and I'll be your baby tonight. The only mama that'll walk the line is a gender-adjusted cover of the Waylon Jennings classic, Only daddy that'll walk the line. Break my mind, written by John D Loudermilk, provided George Hamilton IV with a country hit and was covered by many country singers. There are many other excellent, if obscure, songs on this album
If you enjoy the Trio albums, you will probably enjoy this album and Linda's other early albums including Silk purse. If you didn't enjoy the Trio albums, you may be better looking elsewhere for your musical entertainment. If you haven't heard those albums, I recommend that you try one or both of them first.

Of the three simultaneous releases that Michelle Shocked bills as her latest trilogy, Don't Ask Don't Tell is the most seriously ambitious and eclectic, so much so that she might have considered combining the strongest tracks from its companions with the best here to make a single powerhouse release. It's also the least conceptually focused, though the centerpiece of a kiss-off song, "Hardly Gonna Miss Him," suggests a theme of love gone bad, reinforced by titles such as "Elaborate Sabotage," "Fools Like Us," "Evacuation Route," and "Goodbye." Whatever Shocked has lost with the end of a relationship, the song cycle benefits from a creative emancipation. Like a musical chameleon as she adopts various vocal styles, she sounds willing to try anything--from the jazzy sophistication of "Early Morning Saturday" to the hipster spoken-word wisdom of "How You Play the Game" to the rollicking New Orleans spirit of "Don't Tell." Most atmospherically audacious is "Don't Ask," which sounds like a cross between Dr. John in his Night Tripper days and Uncle Remus. Don't miss the unlisted bonus track, which ends Shocked's most diverse collection to date in an explosion of punk-rock fury. --Don McLeese

...Don't Remember.......2007-01-28
Well, the music here is fine. But largely this collection sounds uninspired. Whereas previous albums of hers had me glued to the lyrics and re-listening every chance I got, I have to remind myself to listen to this one. Not that it is awful. It just doesn't go anywhere. She sounds bored, so I guess I'm bored too. I know what she's capable of, so I miss the clever lyrics and brassy sound of CAPTAIN SWING, the passionate and original voice of SHORT SHARP SHOCKED, or the musicianship of ARKANSAS TRAVELER.
I still give this one 3 stars, based on her previous track record and the simple fact that this isn't really a bad album, especially when compared to her peers. Also, she retains a "one of a kind" quality that some singer/songwriters never come close to achieving.
Don't get me started on the *genius* who designed the packaging.
Terrific collection of songs.......2006-09-20
I don't what I like more: the cover or the music. Mind you, the cover is a hoot. I still laugh every time I reda the liner notes. Michelle has a career as a comedy writer if this song thing don't work out.
But the song thing is superb. Not as idio-syncratic as you might expect, but still filled with wry observations, terrific melodies and finely crafted instrumentation: as you would expect, everything is perfectly suited to each tune.
As angry as you can get with W, God bless MS for bringing a much needed smile. Imagine what havoc would be wreaked if she came home as Mary Cheney's new girlfriend? I'd pay hard money to go to that Thanksgiving Dinner.
So, enjoy this CD, it's great craic start to finish, and even if yer tone deaf, you'll find yourself laughing out loud at the humour.

A Return to Her Peak of Perfection.......2005-08-31
If you are looking for an album with a homogenous theme that will wrap you in its "sameness", giving you a comfortable place to retreat to... this is NOT the album you want. All tracks are extremely well performed, recorded and produced. However, each track could have been done by a different artist. While I doubt it was intended, the first track has somewaht "breathy", yet full vocals akin to early Maria Muldaur. The next track reminds me of several Patti Smith tracks in its direct vocal style, texture and delivery. The third track uses wistful talking/singing to present a story laced with often made-up words delivered in a Laurie Anderson-like style. The list goes on, however, there is no doubt that each of the tracks is genuinely Michelle Shocked. At times playful, always intelligent lyrics are enveloped with and supported by excellent musicianship. Her best work since Arkansas Traveller, her prior "peak of polish & perfection". Definitely worth the "price of admission."
EXCEPTIONAL EFFORT / A TRUE WORK OF ART / BRAVO.......2005-06-23
This CD is composed of strong, diverse and intelligent songs that come straight from the artists heart. The music explores a variety of musical genres from rock, soul, folk, to jazz all with her unique signature fusion of styles. The listener is engaged from the outset with a full range of emotions from empathy to humor. It reminds me of the Kinks at their best in the 80's. Each song has a unique flavor and after the CD is over you have no difficulty remembering the tunes. You only are disappointed it has come to an end. If you have a brain... you should not be bored or untouched by this collection.
The sound quality is excellent. The arrangements are done with care and tenderness. The accompanying musicians and vocalists are used wonderfully and they clearly have a stong connection to the project.
I will not bore you with a song by song description. Anyone who has ever appreciated Michelle Shocked in the past will find their own favorites... which will likely change over time with your mood and circumstances.

wonderful memories of a great artist.......2005-02-22
I too went to Covenant College with Jennifer, and hearing her amazing music brings back many good memories of hearing her practice and perform live, as well as the Lookout Mtn./Chattanooga region in general. Jen Daniels is a uniquely gifted and naturally talented singer/songrwiter, and an excellent guitarist, who is in my opinion on par with one of my favorite bands, The Innocence Mission. I highly recommend her CDs to anyone who likes good music. As a guitar instructor, it is always a joy to expose students to music they might not otherwise hear, and I had the priveledge of introducing someone to Jennifer's music just this evening, before writing this message. It will be my pleasure to hear her perform one day again, but until then I will buy her live CD as well.
"It's a Good Day to Live!".......2002-10-31
Jennifer Daniels is a gift from some higher place. Her music is light years into the future and yet, haunted by the past. Her words of passion and deeper understandings come straight from some event horizon at the center of her soul. She is one of the most important new artists of our times and her songs have the power to change darkness to light.
Get all of her albums and go see her perform live. She's like a super nova, bursting in our midst! One listen and you'll know why, today "It's a Good Day to Live!" -Peace-
Absolutely Amazing.......2002-09-08
Jennifer Daniels is easily one of the most promising artists on the music scene today. She has a very unique voice that has definite Celtic influences fused with Southern inflections (she's out of Lookout Mtn, TN). It creates a very distinctive and interesting presence that isn't easily matched. She can flat out wear out a guitar as well. I've had the pleasure of seeing her play Eddie's Attic twice and was speechless after each show. She has this magnetic stage presence that draws you into the music and you become enraptured by it. I've only seen a half dozen other performers that present such a compelling stage performance. If you ever get the chance to see her live, reschedule everything else so that you make sure you catch this show. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
Dive & Fly is a must-have album (along with the equally impressive Fists of Flood). This is one of those rare albums in which you have no throw-away tracks and each thought has relevance. The production work adds more polish than Fists, but doesn't take anything away from the overall experience. Her execution is flawless throughout. Songs range from the uplifting spirit of 'Day to Live' to the quiet elegance of the reflective 'December'. I think the album highlights reside in the tracks December, Babylon, and He Dances. Strangely enough I think her most compelling track to date isn't even a full thought. It's the minute and a half clip that closes 'He Dances'. The pianos sweep in to create this slightly dark, foreboding atmosphere as Jennifer's extremely poignant voice seems to float over the keys repeating, "I'll be free if you try your wildest dreams on me." It strikes its cord with its subtlety and understated nature. In our wildest dreams, we can't hope to find an artist with more natural talent than Mrs. Daniels. There can only be great things to come from her future efforts and I sit dizzy with anticipation awaiting these.
A Must!.......2002-02-10
I went to college with Jennifer Daniels and used to love to sit and listen to her sing in the dorm or down at the cafe in Chattanooga where she sometimes played on weekends. Now I'm so excited to be able to listen to her again! I've heard her compared to Joni Mitchell and I think that there is truth there. She also reminds me somewhat of Dar Williams. Anyhow, she's a beautiful person and a beautifully talented singer. I would highly recommend this album.

This is a perfect album to chill out with but very dull if you're into heavier music. Rockers should probably not bother with this, but check it out first for yourself.
Amazing album from an amazing talent!.......2004-07-06
I normally don't write reviews, but I wanted to tell anyone who is thinking about buying this album to do so immediately. You will not be disappointed! I have been listening to it for a year since I first saw her live and I haven't stopped listening. She is an amazing talent, both as a singer and a songwriter. I keep waiting for her to make it really big so I can say I knew about her when and saw her live at all these small venues. But in the meantime, I'll enjoy this far too well kept of a secret and so will anyone who is smart enough to buy her albums or to see her live.
You've got to see her live.......2003-10-31
I recently had the pleasure to see Patrice live in San Diego, then Northern California. She is an an amazing talent, plus human being. Fencing Under Fire is an amazing album. Patrice writes all of the songs on this album. The songs are many stories that she has experienced throughout her life journies. Every song on the album is worth listening to over and over. Dominiqe is a great mellow song that was based on a character from a book. Angels, probably the best track on the album.. Patrice stands alone a a unique singer songwriter. I highly reccomend anyone who purchases this album, to check her out live.
Can't stop playin' it!.......2003-08-27
This CD hasn't come out of my car CD player since I got it from a friend. There isn't a song I don't like. The lyrics really move me, make me smile, make me think, etc. The guitar playing is smooth and clean and Patrice's voice is amazingly versatile. I own over 1,000 different CD's in all genres, and this is at the top of my all time favorite list.
Cookin'.......2003-02-28
With the breakup of Sister 7 and being dropped by Arista, Patrice formed Blackbox Rebellion and started her own record company. (Interesting fact: Patrice was a classmate of Erykah Badu.) The CD cooks on most tracks. "Jackknife Girl" is a sassy track with great punch. "Ms. Ramona" sounds like a renegade Patti Smith track from her heyday with a ripping electric lead guitar, "At least I'm living with a soul that rips the truth from heaven's lining." "Sweet November" has a softer feel with a pretty melody, "Oh wind, you blow me to my knees; Helpless rush of these memories." My favorite track that is riding high in my personal top ten is "Me & Smooth." Its bubbly rhythm moves so fluidly that it almost percolates, punctuated by the expansive chorus, "I could do everything, but without this love it would not mean a thing; so I'm coming home." "All My Love" has a sassy swagger. The CD concludes with the eerie stateliness of "Volcanoes." Although a couple tracks are slower and don't grab me as much, the high points here are ones not to miss. Cookin'!

Redefines "Great"........2002-05-26
There are NO bad tracks on this album. Not one. This is a self-assured mixture of polished, varied music which should be required listening, particularly for any bachelors in their mid-40s.
The titular "Grown Man" is dating, a practice meant for much younger and less cynical people. His age shows in tracks like the a capella Vegas-lounge-style "The Birthday Present", and the crochety "Cobwebs", while the bluesy "That Hospital" and the beautifully melodic "Dreaming" point out his awareness of (and obsession with?) death.
And you might not want to date him. He gets a bit paranoid when left at home to do the "Housework", he'll question your orientation then mock your grammar ("IWIAL"--"I Wish I Was A Lesbian"), he's not really sure if he believes in love ("I Suppose"), and he'll drag out a relationship longer than it ought to go ("The End Has Begun").
Erm, you sure don't want him as a dad ("A Year", "Father-Daughter Dialogue"), except that if you're his daughter and you have a =very= beautiful voice, he might put you on his album. (Martha Wainwright's contributions to this album are guaranteed to melt the listener.)
I reiterate: there are no bad tracks here. Even Loudon's sometimes-seemingly-obligatory self-loathing reference to his father in "Just A John" is particularly insightful.
Apart from the personal material, there are two "current event" tracks. "1994" is a reggae ode to genetic engineering which asks the pertinent question: If we are just "genetic goop", are we really responsible for =anything= we are or do?
"The Human Cannonball" is the obituary for an actual human cannonbal (Emmanuel Zachini, Sr.) set to music. It's one of those classic, simple tunes and simple stories that Loudon puts together that speaks to the human race.
And lastly, charmingly, there's his cover of "Treasure Untold", complete with yodelling. As steeped as the album is in LW3's world-weary view of love and relationships, this was an inspired choice for last track, being a straight-forward by-the-books love song.
Indispensible.
Good Stuff But Not His Best.......2000-06-20
I've been a long-time fan of Wainwright's since someone clued me in on him in College, so I anxiously bought this CD a number of years ago to see what he had been up to. There are in fact some good cuts on this ("Father/Daughter Dialogue" was my favorite) but I found the self-deprecation and confessional stuff was getting a little bit old, and some of the irony and wordplay seemed forced.
For people who have not heard Wainwright before, I would suggest going with some of his earlier work, including "Album III" and "Mustache.
If you want a good, funny song -- something I still sing to my wife -- try "Mr. Guilty": "Call me Mr. Guilty/Mr. Guilty is my name/I am the one/the no-good bum/that did it all to you/Oooohhh...." You might also catch Wainwright on old re-runs of MASH.
Man, what a record!.......2000-05-27
No offense to the hardy band of Loudon Wainwright III fans, but his creating this stunning album seems about as likely as Herman's Hermits coming up with "Rubber Soul." "Grown Man" offers an emotional rollercoaster ride that pays off at every turn. The many exceptional songs include "Grown Man" (a country hit for someone smart enough to cop it); "Father/Daughter Dialogue" (with real-life daughter Martha getting in her licks); the hilarious "IWIWAL"; and "The End Has Begun." Life's rich pageant, from a man who has been there.
Several good tracks.......1999-12-17
A number of good tracks, especially IWIWAL which is hilarious, and Father/Daughter Dialogue.
Several not-so-good songs as well, though - That Hospital is rather dreary, for example.
Fairly average Loudo, not his best but not the worst either.
Best back yard listening music ever!.......1999-06-23
This album has become my personal favorite....out of my 350+ cd's, it is played most often. Loudin's sense of humor and raw Guitar ability and Vocal talent really shine throught all of the tracks...or at least most of them. Go in your backyard and put this on the boom box....you can't go wrong.

Customer Reviews:
The real deal!.......2002-12-13
Michelle opened for an Indigo Girls concert I attended this week and I was completely blown away by her talent...I had never heard of her before. Her voice was magical, her songs "real" and touching, and her spirit was refreshing. I immediately bought this CD and have been hooked ever since. Her voice and style are a mix between Norah Jones and Janis Joplin...totally unique and original. Thank God there are female artists like this around to provide us decent musical fufilment. Buy this CD, you will love it!
Amazing Album.......2002-06-13
This is the first Michelle Malone album I have ever bought. I have heard her sing on some Indigo Girls' records so I thought I would give her a try. This is such a great record with lyrics I can relate to and a great variety. Michelle has a sweet voice and a real talent for poetry. I recommend this album highly! Definitely a must have!
If I could give this 10 stars, I would..........2002-03-25
Without a doubt, this is Malone's strongest effort. In a word of fast food, fast guitar, and flash-in-the-pan dance dollies taking over radio, Malone is a refreshing, relaxing and much needed musical break from the mainstream. Her duet with Indigo Girl Emily Saliers, "Strength for Two" is vocally rich and lush...her guitar playing is clean and impeccable. You can't go wrong with this disc. Kill your radio and support independent music!
Homegrown showcases Michelle's diverse musical style.......2000-08-17
Wow! I must say that Homegrown doesn't need any improvement! From the beautiful harmonies of Strength for Two (backed by Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls) to the powerful lyrics in Brand New Dream, Michelle took no shortcuts with her latest. I highly reccommend it to anyone who has a taste for folk, rock, or female vocalists.
Amazing voice and songwriting.......2000-06-25
I bought this CD after hearing her in concert. Michelle Malone has a powerful voice with a folksy, revved-up sound. She can also play a mean guitar and harmonica - at the same time!

It contains songs not on other CD........2007-01-01
I am pretty happy with the CD I have. I noticed that these songs are not on other CD. Summer Time in Venice, Three Coins in the Fountain, The Impossible Dream, Send in The Clown, Somewhere My Love and Elizabethan Serenade. The sound quality is acceptable.
The Best Of The Mantovani Orchestra.......2004-04-13
This cd is an ok collection of tunes from Mantovani. It's not the best but it's ok.This 2 cd set features songs such as three coins in a fountain, send in the clowns, skater's waltz, for once in my life and others. This isn't the only version of for once in my life Mantovani did. This version is light strings.Manti's other version is with a harpsicord and heavy strings. It is on Mantovani Scene/Mantovani Sound which has just come out from Vocolion. It also has such songs as dear heart, both sides now, honey and a lot of others.Amazon doesn't have this yet but I have just recieved my copy from another website.Like the other viewer said unfortuanly the sound quality is bad on the best of collection.I even heard somebody coughing on one track and there is some tape hiss from the transfer.I would like to recommend a 2 cd set by John Fox going under the name of the starry night orchestra that is put out by yestermusic(good music group)and has 30 tracks by Mr.Fox.Every song has a heavy string contingment and it states that these were played on beautiful music stations.John Foxes Strings are so beautiful.
The John Fox I'm talking about isn't the same John Fox that is a commedian that is sold on this site.
The Best of the Mantovani Orchestra (vol 1 & 2).......2002-09-14
The Madacy Label has betrayed Mantovani's genious, and substituted poor recordings in these 2 CD's. I have immediately
cancelled all Madacy Label orders with everyone, and will investigate all future items with a Canadian origin prior to purchase.

Poor Recording.......2002-09-05
The quality of the recording is poor. You can hear flutter in the string passages, which is 90% of Mantovani's music! There is also hiss noise, and pops in piece transitions... Amateur transcription from tape to CD's, is my guess. Someone else made bad reviews regarding the poor recording on the same record label, so my suggestion is to stay away from the label Madacy Records.
Top of the "Beautiful Music" Heap.......2001-02-19
This CD has a nice collection of Mantovani's work. The combination of older standards with "newer" (such as Stevie Wonder's "For Once In My Life")is great. This is the stuff that is usually mocked as "elevator music" but also considered by many good romancing background music. Many of these arrangements were heard on a local Beautiful Music FM station where I live before the format change. The only negative I have is for a "box set" there is no write-up on the Orchestra. It would have been nice to read about Mantovani and what inspired his arrangements, and the orchestra personnell. My copy was made in Canada by Madacy. Maybe someone who has contact with that company could recommend a booklet for any future copies made.

The Real Thing.......2007-01-27
I'm a HUGE Mantovani fan and have had mixed results trying to upgrade my collection to CDs. This collection is the original orchestra arrangements of all the classics. This is the one to buy.
Fantastic Collection of Favorites!!!.......2003-07-02
The Mantovanti Orchestra shows off their "marvelous versatility" in this "wonderful" collection of "8 CDs", with titles that tell you "just what to expect", such as: "The Love Songs", "Memorable Classics", "Itallian Favorites", "On Broadway", etc. You can set the MOOD for practically ANY occassion! There are even some "popular" selections that we all know and treasure like: "Moon River", "Over the Rainbow" and "Autum Leaves"!
You will NOT want to remove these GREAT CDs from your CD Player, once you have listened to them! They make "nice" background music for small get-togethers or "lovely" background music for those "ROMANTIC DINNERS", for you and your "SPECIAL SOMEONE"!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SET!!! It is a GREAT DEAL for the money, even at the full price!!!
