4 out of 5 stars Deep Cuts.......2007-06-05

Deep Cuts~ The Knife is a great album filled with well-produced electronic music. They sound like a mix of early 80's minimal synth-music like early human league and mix this up with sounding like Goldfrapp and other more modern synth bands. The lyrics are ok but one will never confuse the knife with great lyricists such as Martin Gore or Marian Gold. I love the sounds and they seem to have been picked by hand since every sound is just right for the track. The cover-art ( if you now can call it art, I have my doubts) is terrible and looks like a failed high-school project. The photo is terrible and the font is way to small and some of the colors make it even harder to read. Even so this is a great album and it definetely deserves its 4 stars. I highly recommend this album.

4 out of 5 stars Worth it for "Heartbeats" alone.......2007-05-07

The album is all downhill after that first track, but what a hill to slide your way down! More than anything else, this strikes me as a hybrid of Black Cherry-era Goldfrapp and Teagan & Sara. In other words, driving electro backdrops plus girl vocals ranging somewhere between Marlene Dietrich and pouty adorability. The Swedish accent also puts some of this in Björk territory, though the song structures here are more traditional. Also lurking not too far in the background is 80s technopop stars Berlin; although "You Take My Breath Away" is not a cover, the keyboard line in "Girls' Night Out" owes a huge debt to "The Metro," and the generally tinny timbre of the electronics also hearkens back to the early days of digital synths.

So, in short: (Goldfrapp + Teagan & Sara) x Berlin ÷ Björk = The Knife. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Your mind will be reshaped.......2007-04-10

It's easy to find this music enthralling. The way it affects your senses, your mood, is completely different from anything you'll experience any time soon. The Knife is completely original.

While some tracks, like "The Cop," are too strange for my liking, tracks like "Heartbeats" and "Rock Classics" and of course the youtube hit "Pass This On" will truly stick with you. You never want to press skip on those.

I hope this helps.

3 out of 5 stars not as good as Silent Shout but still worth listening.......2007-03-09

Nothing beats Silent Shout (an album with no bad tracks in my opinion and one of my favorite albums ever), but there are some great cuts on this album (Heartbeats, 3 remixes of tracks, You Make Me Like Charity, The Bridge). Deep Cuts is a bit more poppy and not nearly as refined as Silent Shout. Definitely worth buying though if you're a fan of The Knife. Do anything you can to see them live.

Album Description

"More Deep Cuts is as enchanting and seductive as the quietly beckoning madness of everyday life." - CMJ More Deep Cuts, the second album by San Francisco band Thee More Shallows and their first for Turn Records, arrives some time after their debut A History of Sport Fishing received glowing reviews likening the group to a diverse host of extraordinary bands including Yo La Tengo, Grandaddy and GS!YBE, while also lauding them for being far more than the sum of their influences. After touring the U.S. and UK, songwriter Dee Kesler retreated to the studio to work on the follow-up to their success. What was supposed to be mere weeks of recording turned into months of fine-tuning, then years of obsession. After almost three years of tireless work and Kesler's seclusion from the world, More Deep Cuts emerged, showcasing a massive evolution in Thee More Shallows' sound and producing an album that is both beautiful, epic, haunting and devastating.

5 out of 5 stars Chilling insights into insanity.......2006-03-30

I love this album.
It balances on the edge between insanity and genius.
The melodies are sweet. The lyrics are dark. The contrast is excellent.
Sample "Freshman Thesis," or "2 AM," or "Walk of Shame," but for me this album must be listened to start to finish to truly experience the musician's state of mind.

5 out of 5 stars Barely a classic - a very dark indie rock album - this is pretty depressing, but you'll probably love it!.......2006-01-08

"More Deep Cuts" is definitely a pretty depressing album, but that doesn't mean that the songs aren't good - in fact, they're all pretty much great! This is essentially indie rock mixed with a little electronica and trip-hop (but not so much this part), and in the end you get an inspired and really good album. "2 A.M." is an especially dark-yet-very-likable song. The lyrics are also surprisingly interesting and odd (see "Pre-Present" for some chilling and strange lyrics). The singer is perfect for the lyrics too, because his voice matches what he's singing about. He sounds strange and depressed, which is exactly what the lyrics tend to be about. Musically it's a very solid album with GREAT production - you can tell they spent a lot of time on this. It also doesn't really sound like any other band I've heard so far. It's barely a classic, but I think I've made a good decision in giving it a "5" (this is mostly because their sound doesn't seem to be derivative). This is a very refreshing album when most of what you hear tends to sound very similar (trust me, I probably know this more than a lot of people). Overall this is a very good album that I think has some wide appeal! Highly recommended!

Highlights include:
the entire album!

5 out of 5 stars Pleasently surprised !!.......2005-12-18

I bought this cd on just hearing one song. I forget which one it was. I have been buying cd's that I haven't heard much or anything about, just looking for a gem in the mist of all the crap that is out there, hopefully finding a good cd. Well I did !! I have found a few great cd's doing this and this is one of them. Very mellow and introspective, a cd for headphones. If you are into good music to fall asleep to and have your mind wander off through haunting lyrics and melodies then pick this up, you won't be disappointed. ---zen-->

5 out of 5 stars Getting Even Better.......2005-09-27

These guys won't stop being great. I love it! Slip on some headphones and slip away into a dark, swirling dream. Again, precision is the key here. Every strum, every plink, everything on this record is here for a reason. And each element brings something to the party. Production is wonderful without being the hero. Dee and his not-so-merry-makers take us through joy and pain, sunshine and rain. Sing it now God's children.

Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME ALBUM!.......2005-09-21

This is a great album. I wasn't sure what to expect, I heard a few tracks and liked 'em so I decided to pick it up. I'm very happy I did!! It's pretty mellow with a dark underside at times. Reminds me a bit of Arcade Fire without the orchestral drama.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars ZACH is NOT a James Taylor Clone!!!.......2004-07-17

My apologies in advance to devout James Taylor fans (which include Clay Aiken), but Zachary's voice and depth of feeling in his music is genuinely his and his alone. I am very choosy about what music I listen to, and after listening to only 30 second snippets on my crappy little computer speakers, I am sold on this young man's gift of voice and aility to communicate said feelings and thoughts to the listener.

I wish him many years of successes!!!

5 out of 5 stars James Taylor type voice.......2004-04-27

Okay, so being a Zach Packer makes me kind of bias. Zach has one of the most incredible voices I've ever heard. He's a James Taylor fan and you can hear it in his soulful voice. Not only is Zach an extremely skilled pianist, but his song writting and singing are AMAZING as well. I can't wait to see what the future holds for Zach.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!.......2004-02-24

Zachary Provost is VERY talented!! His songwriting, voice and piano work just shows it!! If you're into both piano and singing, this is for you!! It's lively, moving and wonderful! Words just can't explain it enough - it's just awesome!!

5 out of 5 stars This music is ALIVE.......2003-05-21

Zachary Provost's music encompasses a wide range of styles, yet he manages to keep his music firmly focused toward the intelligent listening audience. As a vocalist, his range and stylistic interpretation of his own material and other contributing artists is excellent. His arrangements enhance each song perfectly. Here is a combination of cool jazz, progressive jazz-fusion and soft ballads that delivers an extremely interesting buffet of musical delights. Whether you like Top 40, jazz or Adult Contemporary, you will find something on this CD that will whet your appetite. Each song is tasteful, exciting, a little unusual, unexpected, and ALWAYS good. This is a refreshing effort by an artist that has an outstanding background as a degreed, working musician and music director for a major recording talent. Zachary Provost is a musician and recording artist that shines in this first effort. He will be around for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic.......2003-03-31

Zachary Provost has a groove that's unmmistakeably connected to his soul. He shares his innermost musical expressions with a technical competence that draws in a listener and illuminates his range of styles. His songs are sometimes intense, sometimes playful and he takes risks to provide a diversity and depth to his music that make the cd such a rare and wonderful treasure. His openmindedness and tenderness is raw and unvarnished.

Zachary's rendition of "Inch By Inch" is rhythmically innovative and gives a soulful interpretation of the song's message and heart. Other tracks including "The Music of My Heart" only grow to be more endearing with time.

This cd really is heartfelt; it's music to celebrate being "Alive". I look forward to hearing so much more from this artist as he becomes even more in demand as he undoubtedly will become.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Start.......2005-07-08

Helix are just one of those bands that haven't had a definitive hits album yet. In a lot of ways you could argue that to properly begin to appreciate Helix, you need to own two of their hits packages, not just one. Deep Cuts is one of those two. It offers a variety of known and lesser known Helix songs for the first time Helix buyer.

Deep Cuts also offers up a couple exclusives to the long-time Helix fan. First off, we finally get the video version of "The Kids Are All Shakin'" never released on CD until now. To boot, this version is superior to the album version. Second, we have "It's Too Late". Right now, you're saying, "So what? I already have that song on their second album." This "It's Too Late" isn't that "It's Too Late". It's not a different version, it's not a live recording, it's a completely different song. This "It's Too Late" is a song Paul Hackman wrote for the movie Iron Eagle, and it's never been on a Helix album before either.

The song selection here is more varied than the previous Over 60 Minutes With Helix CD. That album only selected cuts from three consecutive Helix albums, this one represents seven. Some of these are just great songs that are not often heard anymore, like their cover of "Dream On". You must assume that this song usurped another cover ballad, "(Make Me Do) Anything You Want". "Make Me Do" was a bigger hit, but "Dream On" is a better song. It's good to hear "Wild In The Streets" again. Of course, the big big big hits are all here: "Rock You", "Heavy Metal Love", "Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'", and "Deep Cuts The Knife".

This leaves missing, however, a huge slice of singles and album tracks. "That Day Is Gonna Come" really had to be on here, but it's not. The first album doesn't check in at all, which is a shame as it had Helix's first ever hits. So many album cuts are missing, and the album only clocks in at 50 minutes. That leaves almost a half an hour's empty space that could have been filled by tracks like "Billy Oxygen", "You Keep Me Rocking", "Feel The Fire", "Running Wild In The 21st Century"...you could go on and on.

My recomendation is to pick this up, along with the "Over 60 Minutes With Helix" CD. That will fill in many of the gaps. You still won't get all of the songs above, but consider that a start.

3 out of 5 stars Missing essential songs!!!.......2003-10-07

This a good overview, but not as good as others are saying. It is missing (Make Me Do) Anything You Want. If you want the best greatest hits package, go with Over 60 Minutes With Helix.

5 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong.......2002-12-26

I've gotten every Helix tune that has come out, the day after it did, if at all possible. This compilation, although excellent all the way through, is missing MANY other great helix tunes. Because of that I could've rated it lower, but this Helix for crying out loud. The BEST hair band/party band ever!

4 out of 5 stars Good Compilation of a GREAT Party Band.......2000-07-28

Just ordered this CD. Like the other reviewers it is something that I have been looking for for a very long time. Having grown up listening to hard rock/heavy metal in the 80's, Helix were always a favorite of mine. This was especially true during parties. You could always fit songs like Heavy Metal Love, Rock You, and Give Me, Give Me Good Lovin' in between the likes of Def Leppard, Krokus, and AC/DC without missing a beat. Being a long time DJ I've found that I still have an audience for this stuff too. Rock You still gets people to come up to me and ask, "Who was that?" Of course I have to tell them, "That was the best party band to ever come out of Canada."

I have to say that it is also about time that their albums get re-released. I do however, have one question. Where is Walkin' the Razor's Edge? To me, that was the best Helix album ever and I would love to have it on disk. If anybody knows where I can get it please get back to me this email address, jasica.bairos@virgin.net

As for now, I look very forward to rocking out to this disk. For those of you reading this, I would definitely highly recommend this or any one of Helix's early albums up through No Rest For the Wicked. They will bring great music to your ears.

4 out of 5 stars The Best of Helix: Deep Cuts - Finally!.......2000-05-14

I searched the record stores for years trying to get a compilation CD for this Canadian band. Half-Alive gave me hope but was missing too many of the tracks I wanted. Fortunately, Deep Cuts delivered with almost every track I wanted (it was missing Does a Fool Ever Learn from No Rest for the Wicked album).

Wild In the Streets is my favorite (it's just damn fun, especially if you saw their MTV video of it), followed by Deep Cuts the Knife, Heavy Metal Love, The Kids Are All Shakin' and Rock You. Some nice bonuses for me were Gimme Gimme Good Lovin' and Good to the Last Drop, which are both good tunes.

Compare these underrated guys to Kix, Y&T, XYZ and Thunder. If you can only afford one album from Helix, this is the one.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The last decent Strawbs album, although many fans will not rate it that highly.......2006-05-03

"Deep Cuts" was the beginning of the end for the Strawbs as far as I was concerned (it only made it to #144 on the Billboard album chart). Their previous album "Nomadness" had clearly been a cut below the group's best work, which would be "Bursting at the Seams," "Hero & Heroine," and "Ghosts." In retrospect there are two key differences that account for why the progressive folk rock group from the U.K. went into decline. First, and most important as far as I am concerned, is the absence of keyboard player John Hawken. He was replaced by John Mealing and Robert Kirby, neither of whom added anything special to these songs the way that Hawken did for so many tracks, esepcially on "Hero & Heroine." I am well aware that once upon a time Rick Wakeman was playing keyboard for the Strawbs, but Hawken proved to be a much better fit.

The other key difference is that the group's leader David Cousins was teaming up more often with Chas Cronk in writing songs in what appears to be an attempt to write more commercial tunes, which was never the group's forte. "Deep Cuts" is more of a mixture of light and dark than most Strawbs albums, giving us the chipper tunes "I Only Want My Love to Grow In Your" (nice job of singing the bridge by Dave Lambert) and "Charmer" with the moody narratives "The Soldier's Tale" and "Beside the Rio Grande." That last one is thee standout track on the album and a clear reminder of the Strawbs at their best. There is also a bit more reliance on acoustic guitar, as in "Simple Visions," although this is balanced by the much harder edged "My Friend Peter." "(Wasting My Time) Thinking of You" is a bit loopy, while "Turn Me Round" is more in the classic Strawbs style.

Consequently, this album is more of a stylistic hodge-podge than any other work by the group. However, this serves to set up the simple elegance of the final song, "So Close and Yet So Far Away," with its piano and strings accompaniment. A rare romantic effort from David Cousins and along with "Beside the Rio Grande" the only tracks he wrote by himself and why I ended up rounding up on this one. Clearly the lesson here is that Cousins needed to go back to writing songs by himself. The fact that Lambert did not right his one or two obligatory songs for this album is another bad sign. There is only one bonus track, Dave Lambert's "You Won't See the Light," which is a slightly above average song and a minor addition.

1 out of 5 stars This is so.... mediocre.......2007-03-15

Another promising album of famous oldies hits the skids.

THIS IS SOUL consists of inferior remakes, including a crowd noise-laden live version of "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag." This isn't soul, it's imitation soul, and as everyone knows, musically "Imitation is the severest form of flat 'n' off key." Beware!

4 out of 5 stars The last decent Strawbs album, although many fans will not rate it that highly.......2006-01-09

There is only one bonus track, "You Won't See the Light," which is a slightly above average song and a minor addition.

    Album Description

European pressing adds 3 bonus tracks 'This Is Now', 'Handy-Man' & 'The Bridge'. The Knife are a brother/sister duo from Sweden with an appetite for bright, quirky electro-pop and unabashed emotions. The result is 'Deep Cuts', a colourful album that makes up for an absence in subtlety with an immediacy that should surely reap some commercial rewards. The formula pays dividends on 'Heartbeats' where Karin's vocals are exuberant whilst Olof's synths are brimming with the echo of late 80's disco pop. V2. 2006.

4 out of 5 stars The Knife that heals!.......2007-04-07

Bjork meets Gary Numans synthesizers and teaches him the meaning of the "New Syne-Wave". Probably one of the freshest bands to emerge into my record collection (okay so they are mostly cd's-I digress...) Anyway, apparently this is a husband and wife team that have a surprise around every corner. I never get the feeling of stale or lost. Each track has a flavor of their own, and Im glad they are going in the direction they are. Go gett 'em kids!
