Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27

This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

4 out of 5 stars Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

5 out of 5 stars One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

5 out of 5 stars The best and original bassin', scratchin' and rhymin' album!.......2005-03-31

A.D.E. :: Adrian Does Everything. Adrian Hines is the man behind this masterpiece of bass, rhymes, and scratchin, and his genius shows on every track. Back in the early 90s this album was the best bass album on the planet, and because it is so well done with a timeless style of both beats and rhyming, it remains so to this day. Bass albums then and now can't hold a candle to this beast...this is the bass equivalent of Wutang's "Enter the Wutang 36 Chambers" - rugged and forever unable to be duplicated.

It's hard to single out just a few songs from this album for review because they all kick, but here's a try: The highlights on this album include the title track "How Much Can You Take", featuring a super-heavy bassline, a catchy hi-hat that will make your tweeters scream, the creepy Halloween piano melody and of course ADE's signature robot voice asking you, "How much can you take?" while the bass pounds you in the kidneys. "Sex, Crime, Drugs" and "It's Crazy" are two songs that exhibit ADE's rhyming skills and portray a positive message...instead of glorifying killing and drugs, he rhymes about how it really is. The beats and the bass are among the best and funkiest bass EVER, and will really put your subs to the test. The best example of ADE's lyrical prowess is the aptly named "Physician" where he precisely slices through the beat with a combo of scratching and superfast rhymes that will leave your head spinning!

You should buy this album if you want the very best of early 90s rhymes, scratches, and earthshaking bass that will show you how far your subs can throw...and especially if you are tired of the overproduced electronic style bass albums that are out nowadays. You won't be dissappointed!

5 out of 5 stars GUARANTEED TO SHATTER ANY WINDSHIELD.......2004-11-02

What more can I say. This was THE bass album to have in high school if you had to kickin system in your car. Definite must have and was just crazy with beats. HOW MUCH CAN YOU TAKE with its sample of HALLOWEEN. Da TRAIN and who can forget HIT HARDER...HIT HARD, HIT HARDER, oh man that was the album right there!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Hardest Hittin' Bass Ever.......2004-09-12

If you are lookin' 4da bass to pop yo! trunk then get dis cd now.A.D.E. has out done himself on dis 1 fa sho!Just da title song itself asks "How Much Can You Take" n wit dat question it is answered on the whole damn cd.After listenin' 2 dis cd you will be all bassed out.Get it while the gettin's good.

    5 out of 5 stars SPL.......2002-11-04

How much can you take is a must for ither the basshead or the true lover of good, hard, SPL. In 1997 in my old beatup Subarue I hit an in car SPL of 142 dbl's. I had only two 12" subs and a Soundstream Ref-500 AMP. I did this useing the song Hit hard. I love the simple yet powerfull bass notes on this albume. The Train is my fav" If you like good hard hitting bass you will love this cd. Good Luck!

5 out of 5 stars Best of the best in breaks/bass music.......2002-03-07

This unbelivable album was way ahead of its time. I am a local D.J. from Orlando Florida and we are real big on a style of music known as electro breaks. These guys are the pioneers of this genre of music. They combine heavy bass infused breakbeats with hip hop. They are one of the first to use the vocoder rap. This unique method is when the lyrisist spits through a synthesizer. It kind of makes the emcee sound like a robot. These cats released this album in 1989 but for the creative chemistry it persued, and being so ahead of its time it did noy garner massive critical acclaim nationwide. The conceptual classic lp fell on def ears, but some ten years later when the bassy Florida electro breaks movement began to get popular "How Much Can You Take" had been apraised by local djs. The title track "How Much Can You Take" has one of the most strenuos wind-shield shattering basslines you have ever listened to. This cut also uses an eerie sample of the track from the horror movie Halloween. You know that weird...playing in the backround every tim Michael Myers makes a kill. My favorite cut on the album is "Control" with its heavy electro bass infected break...Janet Jackson sample. This is old school breaks at its finest before it was appreciated...

Elaine Stritch is a legend and she knows it. And so she came up with a whole one-woman show about the best topic she could think of: her life in the theater. And what a trip it's been. From Ethel Merman to Noel Coward, Stritch has worked with some of the greatest names to grace the American stage, and she has anecdotes about all of them (most are included on this recording). In this show, she hits all the marks with the acuity of a seasoned pro who's seen it all and whose love for the theater remains undiluted. Stritch is not a traditionally pretty singer (those gravelly pipes!), but she absolutely knows how to give life to a song, extracting the last drop of meaning, dropping pauses for effect with deadly accuracy. Sondheim's "Ladies Who Lunch" and "Broadway Baby" will be hers forever, and a case could be made for the hilarious "Zip" (from Pal Joey) and the obscure, spectacularly politically incorrect "Civilization" (from the revue Angel in the Wings) as well. Fittingly, this two-CD set includes "I'm Still Here," which may well be Stritch's motto. If you're looking for a concise yet bewitching history of the musical, this is it. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

    5 out of 5 stars A National Treasure.......2007-07-05

This double CD is stuffed full of great songs and amazing stories. My favorite stories are of Elaine's date with Marlon Brando, what she thought some lyric are/meant, and her time in Compant. The total honesty that she brings it all together is touching and inspiring.

Very few people have the length or variety of a career that Elaine Stritch has had. I am sure that she has enough stories to do ten more shows.

If you love Broadway then you must buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Stritch is superb.......2007-06-27

The only disappointment is that I missed the show live. This is a terrific honest performance by an actor who has a deep well of experience from which to draw. From her early childhood memories, through acting school, her loves, her struggles and more, Ms Stritch weaves a fascinating and completely enthralling story. Ultimately, she lives the songs, rather than just performs and this is what really marks her out.
I am so glad, she's still here!

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining but grating on the ears.......2007-05-11

I've never been able to understand what is so great about Elaine Stritch's singing. It's simple: she can't sing. I've tried and tried to like her, and I do, as an actress, but NOT as a singer. Listening to these CDs, all I hear is a grouchy old lady voice with no vibrato, no range, and no ability to hold notes. If she were to try out for American Idol she would get cringes! I love her humor and honesty, and that's why I bought this, but the voice...ugh.

5 out of 5 stars Great Broadway Review.......2007-04-11

I thoroughly enjoy this collection of stories from her experiences from a teenage girl in Michigan through her career, very funny, some sad and great entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars Elaine Stritch at Liberty.......2007-01-19

Completely entertaining---a bit maudilin in places, but a must have for any Elaine Stritch fan.

    Certainly worth the money!

Wonderful selection of classic singers and songs. Special favorites are Ethel Merman and Barbara Cook.

5 out of 5 stars Love the choices.......2006-08-11

This is great. Anything with Ethel, Bernadette, Barbara (both of them), Mary, and Marin is beyond words. Any one of them by themselves is awesome but these ladies together are mind blowing. All of the women sound amazing but they made a mistake on the list of songs and composers. "Raise the Roof" sung by Julia Murney (I love her)was written by Andrew Lippa, not LaChusia.

    2 out of 5 stars coulda been a contender.......2006-03-15

The divas are indeed divine, but the choice of music sung left me wondering why, with so many other great music selection contenders.

5 out of 5 stars Two words: Julia Murney.......2001-09-03

OK, so it sounds crazy to review an album with Ethel Merman and Bernadette Peters on it and not mention them. But...tough. I've read enough about them to know how good they are.

Buy this album as a token of love to the producer who had the cajones to put Julia Murney on an album celebrating the last 100 years of Broadway divas.

Because SHE is one of the greatest voices of the decade!

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A passable release, but pale in comparison to "The Album"........2002-03-22

This US-only Jive Bunny release contains three megamixes lifted from the second (UK) Master Mixers album, "It's Party Time" which can be found in the zShops section of Amazon. What's also interesting is that one of the other megamixes isn't actually a Jive Bunny track at all, whereas the remaining two have also been lifted from other albums. So really, what you have is a mini 'best of' album.

The CD begins with "Can Can You Party", originally released in August 1990, and Jive Bunny's final worthwhile (UK) single (reaching the top five). This, it has to be said, isn't the 7" radio edit or the original album version. Instead, it's a very passable remix. "Can Can You Party" is an eclectic mix of rock n' roll themed tracks from the 50s right up until the British rock n' roll revival of the 1970s. Produced and mixed in the same vein as "Swing The Mood" and "That's What I Like", "Can Can You Party" is a throw-back to the days when a Jive Bunny single release almost guaranteed chart success. And it just happens to be the best megamix found on this particular album. (Track Rating: 4/5)

Track Two, "Here We Go Again", also comes from the "Its Party Time" album. Later remixed and repackaged as "Over To You John" (a charity single released in March 1991), this megamix focuses on the 60s - a particular musical era that the Mix Masters seem to have difficult with. Considering all the great songs that decade produced, the Mix Masters had to go with tracks like "Wooly Bully" by Sam The Sham and the Pharoahs! This only proved that sometimes the Mix Masters could push the novelty factor just a little too far. An extremely mediocre megamix. (Track Rating: 2/5)

Track Three, "Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame" is an edited version of a full-length album released in 1992 - the original Mix Masters final Jive Bunny production for almost six years. Fans of Jive Bunny - and not just those who only like the first album - will be disappointed with this megamix. I've often wondered why "Swing The Mood" was so successful, and I'm sure that can be explained by the way those classic rock n' roll tracks were mixed together using modern-day technology. "Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame" on the other hand, lets the music do the talking, and the mixing qualities are kept to a minimum. It's sad to say, but old 50s rock n' roll tracks just aren't as appealing this way, and it makes this megamix... (Track Rating: 2/5)

Track Four, "The Juke Box Story", first apeared on the 1994 "Best Of Jive Bunny" CD - which is surprising because (back then) it was a 'new' track! Mixed and produced much similar to "Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame", this megamix is slightly better as the Mix Masters have opted for a more high-profile style of modern-day mixing, which ultimately breathes new life into those old classics. The samples used come from the 50s, an era the Mix Masters seem comfortable with, and is an excellent party track - but pale in comparison to "Swing The Mood" and other early Jive Bunny megamixes. (Track Rating: 3.5/5)

Track Five, "The Chuck Berry Medley", isn't actually a Jive Bunny track at all. This was produced by the Mix Masters for an album released by Prism UK Records in 1992 called "Party Megamix". But in all other aspects, it is a typical Jive Bunny track. As the title suggests, it's a tribute to Chuck Berry - and it's Chuck really singing on this megamix! Much better than the god-awful Little Richard megamix found on the "Its Part Time" CD, and I'm sure Chuck Berry fans will love this. (Track Rating: 2.5/5)

The final track on "Can Can You Party" is another example of the Master Mixers pushing the novelty factor too far. "The Roaring Twenties" pays homeage to the music from (you've guessed it!) the 1920s - and it just doesn't work. The songs are too old fashioned to capture your attention, and it's a medley performed by a genuine barber shop quartet rather than it being a mix of old 78s (remember them!). This is definitely one to play your great grandparents! (Track Rating: 1/5)

This is a worthwhile purchase for Jive Bunny fans living outside the US as it offers something different. For US fans, I'd recommend you check out the zShops for "Its Party Time" and "Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame".

        Jon.

        4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

        1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.
