Alice Deejay finds its inspiration at the nexus where house music meets Eurovision songwriting. The creative force behind Alice Deejay, and the voice fronting it, is a Dutch club DJ identified only as Judy. She's enlisted two other singers (Gaby and Jane) and a host of European house-music producers from the more pop end of the spectrum--people whose credits include remixing Ricky Martin's World Cup theme song and the Vengaboys. The result is a mixture of melodies that are heavily Europop with maybe a dash of contemporary U.S. Britney-'n'-Backstreet Top 40 over a beat that started with Giorgio Moroder in the late '70s, took a trip through the British Hi-NRG style in the '80s, and hasn't yet quit. The handiest comparison to someone who has combined a similar set of elements in an obviously successful way is to Cher and her hit "Believe," but the proof that crafting melodies that catchy is not easy is also on display. --Bob Bannister

Two-fingered basslines, cosmic wooshes and thunderous Yamaha beats certainly don't make for quality music, but in the case of Alice Deejay's arrogantly-titled "Who Needs Guitars Anyway?", it makes for one heck of a party. Fuelled by the ubiquitous single "Better Off Alone"- arguably the most recognizeable mainstream electronica hit alongside Darude's "Sandstorm" and ATB's "9 PM (Til I Come)"- the album dives right into throbbing club stomps and trife lyrics. It's pure Velveeta, but the thing we Americans fail to realize about these bizarre Euro kids is their willingness to accept that cheese factor and just dance. Take it from that perspective, and you'll find a club record with surprisingly entertaining results.

There are only three tracks on this CD worth anything. Everything else is just OK. If you like "Better Off Alone" enough to spend the money, Definately buy this CD, otherwise; Download the tracks off of Itunes.

here's the deal, I'll be quick. I loved 'better off alone' and the only other track that struck me as being nearly as good was 'lonely one'.. all the rest are not what you are going to be expecting if you are going for what you've heard on the radio. Trust me its a well done album as far as production goes, but the beats and vocals get quite repetitious to put it mildly.

Who Needs Guitars Anyway?~ Alice Deejay is a steupendous trance album with amazing sounds, loops and beats. The lyrics are great and have that eurovision quality to it that is perfect for this kind of music. I especially like the fact that they have seemingly handpicked the keyboard sounds. I love songs like the lonely one, no more lies, back in my life and better of alone. I especially the brilliant keyboard sounds used for the track the lonely one and no more lies. The production value for the album is top notch. This is a must have album for dance parties and clubbing as Alice Deejay has created one of the best trance albums of all time.

As a fan of euro, goa, and some synthpop. I was impressed by this release. It had 4 good songs.

A historical dance album.......2005-02-26

If you like this kind of music you can't go wrong with this album. There are at least 5 or 6 solid songs on here. The music is infused with femininity. Much of what came in the genre before this album was male dominated. Who needs guitars anyway is largely responsible for breaking the feminine barrier in the genre. A great dance album.

This Cd is why i began to like the whole dance/trance genre after i heard the song better off alone on a radio station. After buying this cd, i was so pleased; this cd is repetitive but if you liked better off alone, then you'll love the whole cd no doubt. Even as it ages, this cd still is a favorite; not a one hit wonder. there are vocals and sometimes they're too much but only in certain songs. This CD even has plain instrumental/trance music songs which i love. My favorite songs are "back in my life" & "everything begins with an E" I only wish she'd make a new cd.

The is a very very good album...I found out of this artist while looking at a Sarina Paris cd (which is another good one) and I listend to the demos and they are some of my favorites I never seen before...I listen to this dance station and they play all her songs and I love it...I never saw this in stores but now I have it and I don't regreat it so Buy It a.s.a.p. if your really want somethiong to dance to!

Alice Deejay combines love and desperation better than any other electronic artist on the scene. "Her" work is dark, lonely, pure, even when it's exuberant -- "Better Off Alone" has been as successful as it has because it mixes a relentless forward motion with a carefully preserved "electronicness" -- so listening to this album is like being in the dark and *searching*, but loving the search.

Sure, the sound becomes repetitive in a few of the less emergent tracks; but it's the unity of the sound that holds the album together, and on the whole it's an advantage. "Fairytales" (the panned track 8) is hypnotic in an Annie Lennox kind of way; it takes its time. It's atmospheric like the ocean, dreamy like a lullaby, but still crisp, still rigidly structured and punctuated with vinyl rips, and it's a gorgeous contrast to the rest of the album.

Another winner (for you kindred spirits out there), furiously up-tempo like the bulk of the CD, is "No More Lies". I haven't heard such jubilant desperation since Skribble's remix of Olive's rendition of "I'm Not in Love", and this track tops Olive's detached notes with its own driven, hopeful/plaintive arcs. The zenith of the album tilts the CD's characteristic yearning angerward; play "I've Got to Get Away" while driving from a job you hate *once*, and you'll find yourself playing it every day.

All that said, some of the tracks are playful, teasing, and just plain fun, and there are enough anthems on this CD, and simple, soaring melodies, to please any electronic fan. The album works as a bridge, too, between top-40 remixes and the first stirrings of trance appreciation, so it's a friendly introduction for those who aren't (yet) in the know. In short: this album was made by clubbers *for* clubbers; it understands the many moods of clubbings, and it's with its listener every step of the way.

I bought this CD mainly because of "Better Off Alone" which is probably the best track on the whole album. After a while the repeditive music starts to piss you off, but hey. About 90% of the songs are good, which is better than most CDs.

What can i say? 'Better off Alone' was the first song i heard by Alice Deejay. When i found out she had an album out, i knew i just had to have it. All the songs are really good and is meant to be played FULL BLAST, otherwise like another review said, it will suck LOL! If you like euro/dance, then pick up 'Who Needs Guitars Anyway?' by Alice Deejay.

GREAT but not the best..........2000-12-26

Let me start by saying this cd was just GREAT when I first listened to it. You gotta keep it on FULL-BLAST though or it just sucks. After a while, you seem to only listen to it once-in-a-while, its good but gets old after a period of time... Alotta CD's are the same in that mannor though so I'd say just BUY IT and ENJOY! If you enjoy Trance/Euro/Club Dance, you'll love the GREAT music on this GREAT cd! 2 Thumbs Up!! =)

I just found out about Alice DeeJay about a month ago, in summer 2003. I think that this music is great! Too bad I didn't listen to dance music before 2 years ago! I bought this import version of the CD because it has the "Back In My Life" video. It's awesome. I definetly recommend it.

Okay, here's a description of the tracklisting:

Back In My Life - One of my favorites of the track. Nice bassline, vocals, everything. Vocals very reverby, with a nice lead synth line. This is definetly a good song, and it's very danceable. Totally awesome melody. Very good eurodance. Nostalgic tone.
Better Off Alone - Many people may get bored by this one. Nice melody, although a little repeditive. This is the song that people associate most with Alice DeeJay. A little more dancy than Back In My Life. Sounds more trancy, though, with the limited vocals. Nostalgic tone as well.
Celebrate Our Love - Not as dancy as the first two. Has a different energy than both of them. More party-ish. This song focuses more on the vocals than the background. Eurodance. Happy, hopeful tone.
The Lonely One - Pretty hard trance. Less eurodancy than the other ones and more like trance. Vocals very repeditive, but melody is sweet. Synth and strings prevail. The sound is a little more aggressive than the previous songs.
Who Needs Guitars Anyway? - Sounds like the same bass, strings, and lead synth as Back In My Life. Has the nice bouncy pizzicato synth. Also, nice piano breaks as well. This is trance. No vocals. An uplifting tone, yet with a hint of bittersweet with the piano. Very well done track.
Will I Ever - Extremely bouncy, easy to dance to. Bassline is very good. Very good lyrics. Happy tone. Eurodance.
Elements Of Life - Sounds like rave trance. Lots of lead synths going. Some parts of it sound a little like goa. Limited vocals. A driving track.
Fairy Tales - Slows the album down a bit. This one isn't dance at all, it's more like electro-pop, kinda slow, maybe like alt-rock a little.
Waiting For Your Love - Eurodance. Gets old really fast.
No More Lies - Really good stuff. Very energetic eurodance.
I Can See (See It In Your Eyes) - Nice!!! Kinda progressive. Very clubby eurodance. Very dancy. Memorable lyrics.
Everything Begins With An E - Progressive. Extremely well-made melodies. Love the piano and the synth. Bassline is also excellent. 1:25 - 1:39, the lead synth all by itself sounds kinda cheesy. However, with the bassline and the drums, it sounds great. All in all, a very nice progressive trance track.
Got To Get Away - Faster track than all of the other ones in the CD. Very danceable, but there's not much melody in this one. Club.
Alice DeeJay - What a way to end the album! Very nice clubby trance track. In this one, you've got Judy asserting her powers as a DJ, and then as Alice DeeJay. Awesome! Very nice piano melody to top it all off.

Ok, I don't know why I never wrote a review about this album, being so in love with it and all. I just came home from seeing Judy and her girls in concert, and may I say WOW! She was all that and a bag of chips! The music was pumping, and my god was she doing an awesome job! If you club hop, listen to dance, or DJ and don't have this cd yet, BUY IT NOW! You will instantly get addicted! Judy is the BEST!

Back in my life - Probably her 2nd single. This is a light trance tune that is very catchy. There's even a video of this song on the cd!

Better off alone - I'd say this is what made her in the clubs. This song is very addictive and is still being played in clubs today! You gotta listen to it and love it.

Will I ever - A very good song about someone wondering if she will ever find the right person. Continues the catchiness of alice deejay. But never became big in clubs, which is a shame.

I can see it in your eyes - Currently her club hit. Good but get's old kinda fast

IS A GOOD DANCE CD.......2000-10-06

I am a U.S. Marine stationed in Japan (near Tokyo), from Aurora, IL, who loves the techno/trance club scene. This album offers outstanding beats including techno and trance. I wouldn't agree that some of her songs are repetitve, it is just simply her music style. Most of the songs have an up-beat tune to them. Her voice is the real magic, not the lyrics, by the way it grabs the listener. I wouldn't agree with the bonus tracks for the import album, there is none, it's not worth the money. The "bonus tracks", is simply just a video to watch on a computer with the CD in, with the song Back In My Life. I brought the album "Who needs guitars"in the summer of 2000. I only knew of one single that had been released previously to the albums release and that was the track "Back in my life" which was a well nice catchy dance tune and even now, 3 yrs on,when played in clubs i find its still a fresh track to strut to on the dance floor doing your lil' Disco Diva thing!
After first playing the 14 track album i knew it was money well spent,80% of the tracks have a good steady banging beat to them and its the kind of album that when you do play it you will find its hard to actually "sit down" and listen to it. The tunes are uplifting and without realising it your back up on your feet and doing whatever's your "get up thing!" Sadly, my thing was...housework but...SSsshhh! its a secret!) The remaining 20% of the albums tracks are sung slower but they are equally as good because Alice Deejay's lyric's are strong and full of meaning. I do believe she sings passionatly and from the heart. The album is 52 min's long and i promise you that its a good buy!
