Surely Björling was one of the greatest tenors of his or any other time, not only for the clarion ring, the purity, and the melting lyricism of his voice, but for his effortless lightness, impeccable intonation, endless breath control, and natural phrasing and line, enhanced by old-fashioned but wonderfully expressive scoops and slides. On this generous two-disc set, he is heard in a huge selection of arias and some duets with distinguished colleagues; most of them were recorded separately, and a few are excerpted from complete opera recordings--unfortunately not very skillfully, stopping abruptly in mid-phrase if not mid-note. No matter; the miraculous thing is that Björling, whether singing an entire role or a single aria, can instantly create a character and bring him to vibrant life. He sings everything in the original keys--his high B-flats, B's, and C's are thrilling--and almost everything in the original language, including a few songs by Schubert, Strauss, and Grieg. Recorded live in recital, they are delightful--only one is too operatic. Among his partners, soprano Zinka Milanov and baritone Robert Merrill stand out. This recording presents an incomparable artist at his incomparable best. --Edith EislerCustomer Reviews:

(Some guy below is comparing Bjorling to DeStefano and Corelli and some others and was critical of Bjorling. The guy who wrote that must be suffering from hearing loss! ALL the tenors he mentioned are/were great artists. DON'T BELIEVE HIM...BELIEVE ME! :o) Email:boland7214@aol.
Heaven.......2004-12-13
To me, NO other tenor I've ever heard matches Bjoerling. His voice is one of the few that reduce me to tears just trying to EXPLAIN it to people. I've loved classical music since childhood but was never able to get into opera until I heard Jussi ... all the tenors alive today - feh, sorry, but to me they just sound like guys taking deep breaths and singing loud, not like "the voice of God" ...
The Ultimate Tenor Anthology.......2003-10-26
In the opening selection of this compilation; "Celeste Aida", this essentially lyric voice demonstrates for every heroic and dramatic tenor how to sing dramatic opera. It is a sheer singing lesson. In the strenuous recitative, he does not shout or use other non-musical effects, but shows that true dramatic expression is characterized by tonal intensiy and not by volume, although he had plenty enough of that. The beautiful and incredibly free flow of lyric tones in the Pearlfishers duet, the Faust cavatina and in the gorgeous "Che gelida manina" is absolutely exemplary. Yet, who could replicate the beauty of those effortless high C`s? I cannot think of anyone.
The only thing that could better this and give the set 5 stars in the book, is a compilation of the same selections, transferred from the original tapes and not excessively remastered as on this occasion. The sound is at times overly bright and the voice sounds thin and even sharp. But the singing is so far unmatched.
The biggest hype I've ever seen or heard.......2003-07-27
A total disappointment. I recommend Gigli and Del Monaco instead.

Album Description
On this recording, named for an easy-to-recite Buddhist chant that is the essence of the Buddha's heart, Buedi Siebert takes the path of peace to a specific place, as easy to visualize as a clear-air gust of wind high on a mountain in Tibet. Westerners seeking some basic knowledge of Buddhist philosophy will enjoy the simple but informative liner notes that explain the source of this soothing, ambient music that incorporates Siebert's lush, dreamy guitar lines and his mastery of numerous indigenous flutes. There are also soaring vocals by Dorothea Ferber and other chants by male voices. The short version of the title track opens the disc by creating an inviting and soul-lifting Asian atmosphere that is easy to hum along with. Some of the tunes just float sweetly along while others, like "The Lotus People," feature more jangly, percussive beats. On that particular tune, the mantra is reprised with a mix of voice and flute. Siebert lends an even truer air of authenticity with "Lotus Call, Pt. 2," which features authentic chanting Buddhist monks. At the very minimum, the listener will be transported into a very relaxing place. Hopefully, the complexities of the music beneath the basic "Om" will inspire deeper meditation and possibly study into the philosophy that inspired it.~ Jonathan Widran, All Music Guide

Ky-Mani is another of Bob Marley's talented children, half brother to Ziggy and siblings. He is a multitalented performer who has already collaborated with Wyclef Jean and is well on his way to becoming a movie star. He and his band are Jamericans, or American-reared people of Jamaican birth or ancestry. Not surprisingly, his songs travel between a roots-oriented aesthetic and bottom-heavy dance-hall grooves, but are also lightly touched by a sleek R&B/pop sensibility that was probably absorbed during his Miami boyhood. However, whether his agile, rough-edged tenor is inexorably focused on the beat or diffused like ganja-scented smoke rings, the lyrics adhere to conscious Rastaman concepts and lessons. The band is similarly by the book, featuring an ornate, melodic bass, a suavely empathetic female back-up choir, honking sax lines, and a rhythm section that could pulverize solid granite. --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:
Not the most well-known Marley, but Ky-mani's the most skilled vocalist.......2007-03-26
Now, with Ky-mani, while not as prolific as Ziggy, I can envision him as being a singer in his own right, Marley name or not. I can't say the same of the others.
The Marley kids have their strengths.
Ziggy writes strong songs, but his voice is so much like his father's that it's hard to discern his own voice, and it just doesn't seem he has ever found a sound of his own, and maybe that's through no fault of his own -- as he has been branching out musically lately.
And Stephen, as good as his production chops are, he's nowhere near as good a lyrics-writer, and his vocals seem all over the place, imitating Bob Marley more than Ziggy ever did.
And Damian leans on dancehall toasting, at which he's OK, but I still wonder if he'd have the opportunity if, first, he didn't have the Marley name, and didn't have Stephen's production backing.
*(Julian, unfortunately to say, seems to be mostly an imitation of both Bob and Ziggy, and you'd see him if you couldn't catch Ziggy, Stephen or Ky-mani performing)
But Ky-mani, to use Jamaican parlance, has the "sweetest" vocals of the Marley brood. His voice, while still reminiscent of father Bob's, has a timber to it and subtle vibrancy to it, like it's a cloth made of finer threads.
Whereas Ziggy and Stephen's vocals still seem rough, and even flat at times, Ky-mani brings true melody, musicality and dexterity with his singing.
I saw him performing live recently, and his on-stage performance was right up there with the best two or three reggae concerts I've seen.
And he can play funky, play roots, play dancehall and sing lovers rock, going from each style with ease (and sometimes back and forth between two styles within the same song, check out "Hailie I" on this CD), whereas Ziggy is good with the straightforward voice of indignation and conscience, but rather lacking when it comes to the love-themed songs. And Stephen is better at the love songs than Ziggy, and also good at indignation, but he's lacking when it comes to the social-conscience songs, stumbling while trying to deliver strong messages.
But with Ky-mani, just hear how he goes from the rooted indignation of
"Who We Are" to the roots of title-track "Many More Roads," and to the lovers-rock style of "Love In The Morning," all equally convincing. And when I saw him perform live, I learned he can handle dancehall booming vocals more convincingly than Damian, for whom dancehall toasting is his bread and butter. (Check out "In A De Dance" on this CD, where he delivers a gruff vocal style, reminiscent of Buju Banton, but with Ky-mani's vocal ability)
It's truly a shame that more people don't know about Ky-mani, but I guess that makes it easier for us, his fans, to see him play. ;)
Ziggy has the elder brother status and voice of wisdom, Stephen the production know-how, Julian the Ziggy-like and Bob-like mannerisms and affectations, and Damian the toasting bravado, but Ky-mani's got the vocal dexterity and skill, something the others can't claim. With a new album due out sometime soon, hopefully Ky-mani will gain recognition for being much more than just "another Marley son."

The Best Marley Son.......2005-08-04

The title "A Portrait" would suggest some sort of a cohesive look at this talented Bulgarian mezzo-soprano. But she is so astonishingly versatile, one wonders if there are at least two singers at work here. Her more athletic coloratura moments in the Rossini and Donizetti arias would suggest some sort of slavic Cecila Bartoli while her more soulful, lyrical moments in Gluck's Orfeo would suggest a heavier voice like Kathleen Ferrier. Could it be that she has it all--or at least as much as one could hope for in a single singer? --David Patrick StearnsCustomer Reviews:
Kasarova and the Amazing Multi-Colored Dream Voice.......2006-04-06
The really great thing about Kasarova is how she communicates the essence of each aria with her voice. She doesn't sing 'Konzertzant'. Her instrument, for some reason, doesn't sound as big on recording as it does live (where it is quite plenty big, very lusterous and agile), and she uses many vocal colors to bring out the different character of her roles (a lot of time in the same aria to show the change of emotion). It is unconventional, but it works really well in the story telling.
Her coloratura is amazing. It is fast and fluidly effortless sounding... and she sings all the notes!! A true Rossinian mezzo with great extension at the top. She also incorporates the ornaments into the music so well it gives the piece a character rather than standing out at odd with the music. Kasarova is so subtle in her interpretations that each time I replay an aria I catch some nuances I missed before.
Her 'Che faro senza Euridice' may sound 'simple' on the first try, but it is quite understatedly wistful and gives the picture of a devastatingly drained Orfeo who has lost all hope. It gets better the more closely you listen to it. Her 'Voi che sapete' is of a Cherubino who is young and enthusiastically in love.
She uses wider vibrato in her bel canto pieces which fit the music well. Her Rosina has a split personality demarcated at 'ma', a note that turns an perky love-struck young thing into a potentially vengeful witch in such dramatic way that I can visualize her eyes narrowing and her fangs growing just by hearing it. Her renditions of 'o mio Fernando' and 'Se Romeo t'uccise un figlio' are unforgetable. Kasarova gives you all she has and it is wonderful.
Very good.......2004-03-19
Kasarova Is the Current "Gold Standard" of Living Mezzos.......2003-11-14
Very unique and enjoyable voice.......2000-07-22
My favourite selections were the coloratura pieces. "Una voce poco fa" has been sung to DEATH already, but Kasarova adds something new to it, especially in the lower register. It's nice to hear this piece performed by a true mezzo. The "Voi che sapete" was also very nicely done (it fell wonderfully in her passagio), although "Batti, batti" was not memorable (it felt somewhat monotonous---maybe because Kasarova was beginning to tire with the high tessitura). I especially enjoyed her rendition of O mio Fernando---I would like to hear her sing "Stride la Vampa" (Trovatore) in the future.
The only piece that really didn't thrill me was the Orfeo "Che faro." This piece was written for a good rich contralto, and Kasarova's tone simply wasn't appropriate to carry this aria affectively (she really sounds like she's straining the low notes, which can't really be disguised because they occur so many times).
I listen to Kasarova whenever I'm bored with Larmore or Bartoli. She has a certain husky tendency in her voice that is extremely desirable but not present in the voices of these other two divas. This is a wonderful album to introduce you to her unique voice!
