4 out of 5 stars UNDER RATED FUNKSTER.......2007-01-03

IN THE 80'S PRINCE WAS THE MAN AS FAR AS THE MINNIAPOLIS MUSIC SOUND WAS CONCERNED, BUT ONE GROUP TOOK THE SOUND INTO A DIFFERENT DIRECTION. I WAS LISTENING TO THE "HT" SHOW BACK HOME IN SANTA PAULA, CA AND THE DJ PLAYED THIS FUNKY CUT THAT WAS SEXY,DANCABLE,AND JUST PLAIN FUNKY...IT WAS "BE YOUR MAN". FORM THAT MOMENT ON I KNEW THAT THERE WAS MORE THAN JUST PRINCE AND MORRIS DAY THAT WOULD HAVE A SIGNIFICANT INFLUENCE ON MY PLAYLIST...AS A DJ I COULD INTRODUCE MY DANCEFLOOR TO NEW, DIFFERENT CUTS...WITH ONE OF THE FUNKIEST ALBUMS TO COME OUT OF THAT ERA...JESSE JOHNSON MADE THE TRANSITION FROM THE GUY WHO LEFT A POTENTIAL GIG WITH A PRINCE GROUP ,TO BE THE FAMILY, TO A FULL BLOWN FRONT MAN...JESSE JOHNSON'S REVUE IS A MUST HAVE FOR ANYONE WHO LOVED AND STILL LOVES THE SOUND THAT CAPTURED US IN THE 80'S...WHEN MUSIC WAS MUSIC....NOT THE WATERD DOWN STUFF THEY TRY TO FORCE FEED US NOW A DAYS!!! MY fAVORITE CUTS INCLUDE Can you help me, Special Love, and my fav of them all is BE YOUR MAN.( If you're new to Jesse Johnson then you may be better off buying his greatest hits...one draw back is the ommission of "special Love" and on BIG plus would be that you get "Freeworld" it's one of his best and a B side at that on the original Vinyl version!...i beleive it's on the flip side of "Can You Help Me")...JC COTA, Allsound Music, Bakersfield,CA " DJ FOR LIFE "

5 out of 5 stars I wore this album out the summer of 85.......2004-06-03

One of the best of the post minnepolis sound Jesse Johnson (of the legendary funk band The Time) released this album soon after the band disbanded after "Purple Rain" in 84. After buying the album in July of 85 I frankly wore it out having to buy another later that year, the grooves are smoking with the minnepolis sound all over it with snyths and guitar that quakes with grooves. Jesse is no Prince on the vocal front but his singing is more than solid on his first solo album with the highlight being "Can You Help Me" with it's great solo. Johnson was one of the great guitar players of the 80'sand this album more than proves it and he is even a better songwriter than most people gave him credit for.

4 out of 5 stars .......2000-05-30

I saw Jesse in concert in the eighties, and he totally rocked! I love the whole Minneapolis scene; Prince, The Time, The Family, Sheila E., Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis, and of course Jesse Johnson. His debut is full of funky bass and snappy synths with a killer production/mix. He holds his own vocally as well.

My favorite songs include: "Be Your Man", "I Want My Girl", "Let's Have Some Fun", and "Can You Help Me?".

I highly recommend anything and everything from this era. It's a blast!

5 out of 5 stars Jesse Jonhson.......1999-12-30

This reissue of this classic was a wise decision by the powers that be. Jesse is truely an under appreciated musical genuis; legend! Yes, his friends ( o(-> , Jimmy & Terry, Morris, Andre Cymone, and Alexander) are equally as talented, but Mr. Johnson took our sound (Mpls. sound) to new heights in the era of watered down format of R&B. His albums are a must for any true lover of authentic soul, blues, rock, and funk! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars good gawd!.......1999-11-13

this disc is banging to this day.and for my$ jessie could give prince a run any day on any instrument.be your man is still tight as is i want my girl.ain't nothing like them horns.
