I think his debut had the best lyrics. This joint gets off to a good start with We Still Party and pretty much bangs till the end. His production on here is best described as "Late 90's Roger Troutman-esque G-Funk".
Geust Stars like 2nd II NOne, AMG, Suga Free and El Debarge get their shine on.

Top Joints:
We Still Party (Peter Gunz and Quik on the track) Quik jacks the VERB song from School House Rock. (The Jam)
So Many Wayz
Hand In Hand
You'z A Ganxta (Quik refutes rumors that he was involved in Biggie's demise. Also denounces reference to death in rap songs.)
I Useta Know Her (Should be called I Useta Hit That)
Speed
Medley for a 'V' (The P***y Medley)
Get 2Getha Again (Class of 91, 2nd II None, AMG and Quik triple team on this track.)
Reprise (Medley For A 'V)

4 out of 5 stars THE OFFICAL AMAZON HIP-HOP REVIEWER.......2006-12-15

Hello there people, i am back after the crimbo holidays to write another review of one of my best artist, Mr dj quik. if you are wondering, no i have not spelt the name wrong and neither has quik, if your not aware dj quik is a west coast rapper from compton. califonia. as most residents in compton and the near by neighbourhoods became a gang member at a young age, he is a member of the bloods gang.
As i am sure most of us know that the bloods and crips are not to fond of each other and due to this each gang tends to either cross out the B if your a crip gang member due to B been associated with the bloods example.. .. .. BIG would have the B crossed out and sometimes be replaced with a C or most of the time left out of the word all together, and the same for bloods but only the letter C. for example QUICK, bloods would cross out the C making the word spelt like QUIK.

Dj quik has been on the hip-hop scene since 1987 with his underground album "THE RED TAPE" and became a public success in the early 1990's with his first album "QUIK IS THE NAME" in 1991
Over the past few years quik has gone from a slick, cheeky, gangbanging gangsta from compton which alot of his lyrics in his first album mention gang related topics such as drive bys and shootings but quik didn't have a gritty, dirty, rough voice and alot of his song's where rather funky with early G-funk beat. his voice could been seen simalar to eazy e (R.I.P)

in his second album "WAY TO FUNKY" in 1992 quik seems to make this album more funky then hardcore but still mentions some of the same topics and also has a quick pop at MC EIHT in a song or 2. this album didn't do aswell as the first and in my oppinion it is due to it been less hardcore with less compton style.

he then brought out "SAFE AND SOUND" in 1995 which in my oppinion was by far his best album, still got the funky beat but goes all out and seems more hardcore and has more of the compton feel to it.
this is the album where quik realy lets rip on MC EIHT ( if your not aware dj quik had "beef" with mc eiht from comptons most wanted, even though both rappers where from compton they where in diffrent gangs, as quik was a blood and mc eiht was a crip it didn't take long for things to flair up. it all started when quik apparently dissed mc eiht and comptons most wanted in quiks underground mixtape "the red tape"
in this album "safe and sound" it does look like quik has won the battle due to his great lyrics ripping mc eiht apart, lyrics like from the song DOLLAZ N SENSE. " tell me why you act so scary, givin' your self a bad name with your mis-spelt name, E.I.H.T now should i continue, yeah you left out the G coz the G aint in you" also in the following song LET YOU HAVE IT he's lyrics say " take this s**t back to your set if you got 1, coz i'll be putting then double buck shells in my shot gun, and if you come back fu**ing around i'm gonna take your life, why would you come back to a gunfight with a f**king knife, so there it is MC EIHT coz your wack. "

then soon after dj quik brought out RHYTHM-AL-ISM in 1996.
the album didn't do half aswell as his first album or nearly as good as his safe and sound album. dj quik seems to take a much more layed back approch to his style of music and totaly loose's his hardcore style, he also does a shout out to mc eiht say that he would like to do a record together, but a year early was talking about wanting him dead.
this is a dissopointing album for me and although it was worth money i wouldn't say i would spend lots on it. if your a true classic hardcore but yet funky beat and style like dj quiks first album and safe and sound i feel you'll be shocked and dissopointed with this one. if your not a quik fan and have not heard many songs of his but yet like old classic hard core please try looking at safe and sound and quik is the name, these two albums will be money well spent.

if your a fan of snoop doggs new funky laid back style and are more into the new style hip hop seems to be taking.. .. then you may want to look it to this album. $10 is a good price for this cd, but remember if your a old dj quik fan, miss this one out unless its going cheap.

thank you and good luck with your searching.

5 out of 5 stars One of My Favorites.......2003-05-17

Smegma is a band out of Pasadena from the early 70s that moved to Pacific Northwest and took their individualized brand of existential jazz with them. For years, the troupe has marched forward with sizzling live performances using guitar, bass, saxophone, trombone, tape loops, vox, theromin, and their distinct shrieks.

"Ism" is out of this world! It was filled with crazy noises and sounds, moans and groans and all sorts of maniacal tape loops. My favorite tracks are "Rock it Harder," in which after three and half minutes of shreiking the vocalist Amazon Bambi exclaims "What a head rush!" and "Emergency Plan 'B'" which is classic Smegma at its best. The CD is different from the vinyl as it includes extra tracks including the very fine Smegma effort "It's Going Good" which has to be one of their creepiest wonders of all time. This album is a must have for fans of the avant garde and noise genres. It is a true work of art.

4 out of 5 stars One of the greatest bands of my generation.......2007-07-27

I'm a die-hard Chic fan but let's be honest: the wheels were starting to come off the machine by the time this 'reunion' album was released in 1992, a whole fifteen years after they first burst onto the scene with hits like "Everybody Dance" and "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)". Drummer and original member Tony Thompson isn't on this and neither are vocalists Alfa Anderson and Luci Martin. Keyboardists Robert Sabino and Andy Shwartz had also long since gone, taking with them some fundamental aspects of the Chic sound I'd grown to know and love. With new vocalists Sylver Logan Sharp and Jenn Thomas, and even a rapper(Princesa, who raps on "Something You Can Feel" and "Chicism") on board, Bernard Edwards and Nile Rogers did their damndest to keep up with the changing times but it was essentially a losing battle. At least it was as far as I was concerned.

There are still flashes of the old brilliance though. Tunes like "Your Love", "One And Only One" and "Doin' That Thing To Me" are modern and show progression while still maintaining the essentials of the Chic sound (including the wonderful Chic strings) and the opener, "Chic Mystique" is quite a nice little foot tapper, as is "Jusagroove". All the same though, unless you're either keenly interested in nostalgia or a die-hard Chic fan like me, I'd say give this one a miss. Or to put it another way: it's not that this is a bad album per se; in fact it's pretty good. It's just not essentially Chic and as such, is slightly dated. Unfortunately, while these cats were able to set trends in the late 70s and early 80s, by the early 90s, they simply seemed to be following them.

Their first four albums are simply unmissable in my opinion but after that it's like that old saying: you pays your money and you takes your chances. I had this album on vinyl for ages, still enjoy playing it and just had to get it on CD but like I said, I'm a die-hard Chic fan. Quite frankly, I think they were one of the greatest bands of my generation. Given my love for the band and their sound, and the moments of brilliance I referred to earlier, I have no problem giving this album four stars.

      5 out of 5 stars It's Groovilicious!.......2002-07-14

"Chic-ism" was released in 1992 before it ultimately went out of print in the United States. That's a doggone shame because we finally have, after all these years, the reunion of Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards (rest in peace, brother) in one of the most legendary dance acts ever! Next to other then-happening trends, "Chic-ism" may sound old school, but it's certainly not old fashioned. These guys can come up with a groove that's air-tight using REAL INSTRUMENTS and soulful vocals. "Chic Mystique" shines while we're treated to another uptempo number, the flawless "In It To Win It" replete with a slammin' bassline and Nile's trademark guitar. "Doin' that Thing to Me," is also another welcome throwback to the 1970s, and, in a good display of range, they offer the sensual ballad "One and Only Love." But my jam of choice is the infectious "MMFTCF" with its repetive chorus and, again, a good bassline and impressive guitar work. This is hip and happening stuff; it's so hip, P. Diddy is known to often sample Chic's work for his own jams. And it's easy to see why. While Bernard is no longer with us, the legacy of Chic lives on. Quite simply, they were one of the baddest groups around.

3 out of 5 stars Why Chic Fell Off.......2002-04-14

this album illustrates what went wrong with chic. they just couldn't find any way to escape their groove, and they lost their quirk. i loved 'take it off', but this album just sounds old.

buy it if you must. it *is* chic after all. there's some decent stuff to sample if you're working some mixes, but other than that, you won't want to listen to it often.

      4 out of 5 stars Reunion.......2001-07-26

After a prolonged absense from the recording scene, Rodgers and Edwards reunited to produce this album. There were several disappointments, beginning with the use of different drummers than Tony Thompson, whose superb work was fundamental to the earlier incarnation of Chic. The use of different vocalists seemed prompted by a desire to attain Blackbox style, belted-out singing. Incorporation of rap breaks also seemed a nod to the prevailing trends. Many of the songs were penned in ways that shared much with the dance scene of the 90's. In all, this project seemed to respond to the trends rather than anticipate or make them.

There were, however, a number of strong tracks. "Your Love" and "My Love's For Real" showed Rodgers' and Edwards' pop sensibilities and ear for catchy melodies. "High" veered toward guitar rock while retaining a funk base, and "MMFTCF" was the strongest of the irritatingly self-referential songs ("Chic Mystique," "Chicism.") Best of all, the Chic elements of old came shining through on the sublime "Doin' That Thing To Me." This song utilized strings, was percussively infectious, and contained the best, breezy lyrics on the disc. Certainly not in league with their peak material, Chicism was a good effort compared to other albums of the time.

4 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Producers On The Mic {4.5 Stars}.......2006-12-29

Like most of the other reviewers, I think this is possibly Quik's best album (maybe Safe & Sound is...it's a toss up). But as far as production, this is easily Quik's best album without question. Being from the east coast, I can honestly say that Quik doesn't get a lot of play here. But since I'm a DJ I make sure that Quik gets some play when I spin at the club or at parties. People always walk up to me and ask "Who is that?" or "When did Quik put this out" or the one I hear most..."Is this new?". It's sad that music like this gets ignored over here. But on to the review:

Basically, this is the lighter side of DJ Quik. What makes this album stand out from his other work is that you can tell that he had fun making this album. On his previous stuff he had to keep it gangsta, but on this album, he completely shed his gangsta persona and decided to just make good music. Quik even denounces his gangsta ways and attempts to squash old beefs on the genius "You'z A Gangxta". Tracks like "We Still Party", "No Doubt" feat. Playa Hamm & Suga Free, and "So Many Wayz" feat. 2nd II None & Peter Gunz are all certified party starters. And while Quik might've gotten away from the gangsta rap on this album, he most definitely held on to his trademark explicit tales on tracks like "Thinkin' Bout U", "I Useta Know Her", and "Medley For A "V" (The Pu**y Medley)" feat. Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, AMG, 2nd II None, Hi C, and El Debarge.

There really aren't too many problem spots on this album, but there are a couple. While it's a very minor complaint, I know people like me tend to look forward to the many Quik's Groove songs on his various other works, but it's absent on this album. And the track "Down Down Down" isn't necessarily a bad song, but it IS the only skippable track on the entire LP. The rest of the album is tight.

This album can be enjoyed by Quik fans both old and new. The lighter side of Quik is the better side in my opinion. If you're just getting into Quik then you picked a great album start with. Quik has never put out a bad album, but this is one of his better efforts. Go get it if you haven't heard it by now.

Standout Tracks: Thinkin' Bout U, You'z A Gangxta, We Still Party, Speed, So Many Wayz feat. 2nd II None & Peter Gunz, El's Interlude feat. El Debarge, No Doubt feat. Playa Hamm & Suga Free, and Whateva U Do

This album is full of hot beats but it lacks the whole 8-Ball Compton theme, it cant get played out, its for real.Quik didnt sellout but he left the style out. I just hope he doesnt go all R&B. Like a kindler, gentler Nine Inch Nails, New York's ism--lower case letters, please--have constructed a debut that's equal parts alternative and industrial. It's also big, bold, and dramatic. Singer/guitarist Andre Mistier, a Yale grad with a degree in comparative mythology, describes the group's inaugural effort as an exploration of "the animal and organic versus the technological and inorganic." (He's joined by Gerard Toriello on guitar, Leigh Battle on bass, and Mike Higgins on drums.) Never fear, the oft-maligned "concept album" tag doesn't apply, but the idea snakes its way through these 10 selections, especially the title track ("We've gone past fire, but not progressed/we've made more, but feel less"). Aside from NIN, ism have also been compared to Radiohead, but it's a description that doesn't quite fit. The American quartet exhibits an anthemic quality--a little like Audioslave--which the more elliptical British band doesn't share. Highlights include the soaring single "Breathe" and Pink Floyd-esque "Crazy Dream," which ends Monkey Underneath on a meditative note. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

      5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff!.......2007-05-12

Very good disc! It's nice to hear something good with so much stuff out there that's not. If you like Muse, Snow Patrol, The Cars, Jet, The Killers, and Talk Talk...you'll love these guys!

      5 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise.......2006-07-05

I have been playing with the Pandora site for awhile now; it's a wonderful place to find new music. The site popped up a song from this CD and I instantly purchased a copy. It is a delightfully original and enjoyable disc from start to finish. Do yourself a favor and give it a listen!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums of all time.......2006-03-14

"ism" is truly one of the best bands I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. And as such, "Monkey Underneath" is one of very, very few CDs that I can put on and love each and every track from start to finish. I first discovered "ism" in May 2005 when I saw them perform live at the venue I volunteer at. Ever since that day, I've been a huge fan of their unique and powerful music. Not only because it's great, but also because it invokes such deep emotions for anyone listening. Keep an eye on this band, they're sure to gain wide popularity.

In keeping with Amazon's guidelines, I won't put a direct link here. But should you wish to see photos I took of them live, you can google for "late night series december 2nd".

5 out of 5 stars Where have these guys been!!??.......2006-03-09

I saw ism last month in Albany and they totally blew my mind. I wasn't familiar with their music, but seeing them play was intense and inspiring. After that, I knew I needed their CD, so I got it, and it did everything except disappoint me. This CD rocks from end to end, and I'm extremely glad that I got it. Track 1, "Beside The Sun" rocked my face off - Definately a rock anthem for this year. I listen to the album at least 3 times a week, and I always hear something new. I love that about music, because every time you listen you may hear or pay more attention to certain things, which enlightens the listening experience and it becomes somewhat of an adventure. This album definately took me on an adventure, and I'm real glad it's mine now!

      5 out of 5 stars 100% Bitchin.......2006-03-09

I had heard about ISM through a friend, and after hearing one of their songs from him, I had to buy the album. This album is totally awesome, start to finish, and I'm certain that buying this album was money well spent. Also, these guys put on a kick-ass live show, so I would recommend grabbing this CD and then checking them out live to see how their intense shows compare with this well-rounded CD. Definately worth the investment.

these LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK HIP - HOP LEGENDS VIA LAKEVIEW, NEW YORK SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN WAY MORE PROPS THAN THEY GOT AT THAT TIME. THE RHYMES AND BEATS ARE SO ON POINT, YOU COULD THREAD THE LYRICS LIKE A NEEDLE, AND MAKE IT YOUR CLUB OUTFIT AND GO TO ALL THE SPOTS WHERE THESE 3 YOUNG BROTHERS DON'T RHYME - THEY SPIT VERSES THAT VERBALIZE THE THOUGHTS OF THE EVERDAY HOOD. 4 out of 5 stars are you artifacts in disguise??.......2005-01-19

This is an album that i admittedly slept on back in '94. Big mistake!!! With its horns, jazz loops, scratches+head nodding beats its EXACTLY what i love about hiphop+what i think its lacks so much nowadays. All the mc's are tighter than a chokehold, all the beats are bone crushing and all the tracks are infectious. Imagine if you will (and if you're familiar with) the artifacts with all beats done by the (sd50's) stimulated dummies production crew, who have worked with the likes of brand nubian, grand puba, 3rd bass, DEL, and most recently all of everlast's solo albums. The mc's styles and deliveries are brilliant and 1 mc actually sounds like+flows similar to tame one from the artifacts, who pop up nicely for a feature track, while another mc flows abit like grand puba. With anthemic tracks like "ghetto diamond", "time", "babble on", "jokers world" and "a lil'something" to name a few, it has tracks that everybody can feel. A hidden gem of an album that ive at last discovered. Go get it 'cuz if you dont feel the album you aint feeling real hiphop.

If you want to discover an album really great to hear, go for this one. Coming from the best years of the hip-hop, this album is the perfect exemple of the east coast style. Mix of beats, jazz and soul music, sometimes we are wishing that they gonna use the sample for more than what they did. They create their style and I love it

        Product Description

In early 1994, Hard 2 Obtain caught fire with its smash underground single LI Groove, a tune that affirmed through a Rakim sample that the trio represented New York, from Long Island. On the strength of H20s newfound respect among Hip Hops cypher legions, H2O dropped Ism and Blues to explore three true loves: weed, women, and Hip Hop. The album reflects this triple love affair, combining hazy funk and jazz echoes with a rappers delight format. MCs Taste and DL are B-Boys in the traditional sense, playing off each other nicely with call and response rhymes. LI Groove may be H20s only real claim-to-fame track but Ism and Blues does contain a few other hidden highlights. The horn-heavy Ghetto Diamond is a fortified ode to beautiful women of a Hip Hop persuasion and Heels Without Souls fuses Hip Hop and the R&B-styled vocals of Vinia Mojica (Tribe Called Quest) with some flair. This largely slept-on album also features a guest appearance from New Jersey underground stalwarts the Artifacts and boasts production from the Stimulated Dummies aka SD50s (beatmakers for K.M.D, Brand Nubian, Grand Puba) and Roc Raida (X-Men, X-Ecutioners). The album rooted in jazz, R&B, and an old school Hip Hop aesthetic caught a ripple of popularity with the non-mainstream Hip Hop audience but, rather unfortunately, the threesome were never heard from again, that is until now.
