Few recording producers and performers take the time and care to so intelligently exhibit a sampling of the rich and colorful American hymn repertoire. This thoughtful and varied program of hymns, Shaker songs, anthems, and spirituals shows what good things can happen when a top-rank choir and director and an accommodating record company join in such a project. The 20 selections come from a variety of sources, including The Southern Harmony (published in 1834) and The Sacred Harp (published in 1844). The Shaker tunes are from the vast collections at New Lebanon and Pleasant Hill, New York, and Sabbathday Lake, Maine. Four of the six spirituals and several of the hymns are arrangements by Alice Parker; others are arranged by James Mulholland. Among the hymns and spirituals are two American choral classics: Randall Thompson's famous and oft-performed "Alleluia" and Daniel Gawthrop's "Sing Me to Heaven." --David Vernier

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best choir out there.......2004-03-02

The Kansas City Chorale is a SUPERIOR vocal group. I am impressed by its large and wholesome sound that is produced by such a small group. The Alleluia CD is beautiful and also very diverse. "Sing me to Heaven" is gorgeous. The harmonies are beautiful on the page, but are even more beautiful when sung by this ensemble. "Alleluia" is also wonderful, and I was impressed by their interpretation of the many shaker songs and spirituals. This cd is a MUST HAVE for any choral singer or enthusiast.

    5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous.......2003-03-24

My choir sang "Alleluia", and used this recording to learn the dynamics. A brilliant performance of that piece. The others are, too, excellent. Good balance, dynamic, and overall sound. But the "Alleluia" really stood out for me.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent CD.......2002-01-23

My pastor bought me this CD and I wasn't sure I'd really like it. Chorale music? You must be joking. But I popped it into my CD player at home and was immediately astonished at what I heard. The Kansas City Chorale have done an outstanding job of singing hymns of various types, most without musical accompaniment. Track 7 ("Encouragement") is my absolute favorite song on this CD. It is so beautiful to hear, especially when I crank it on my big stereo or over my headphones.

Bottom line: if you like chorale music, religious music, or even classical music, you will really enjoy this CD. The quality of the recording is very good.

5 out of 5 stars A moving survey of American hymns.......2002-01-02

This is an excellent, deeply musical performance of a wide variety of hymns, Shaker tunes, and spirituals. The choices provide variety and a thumbnail sketch of a time in America when hymn-singing was a part of every week's activities. I agree with another reviewer that "Precious Lord" is a highlight. Also noteworthy is "Give Me Jesus" at the end. Both the singing and acoustics of the recording are top notch. I have already played this CD many times since receiving it two days ago. I'm ordering copies for friends! Among my many choral CDs, this one stands out as a favorite.

5 out of 5 stars a listener from North Kansas CIty.......2001-06-27

What a excellent CD! I got this for Christmas after going to a couple of their concerts and it sounds just as good as it did live. If you like chorale music then this is the cd for you. I personally know a man that sings in this group and is very talented singer along with the rest!

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Feat.......2003-02-23

My main exposure to Little Feat was Waiting For Columbus -- perhaps the greatest live rock album of all time. Time Loves a Hero is another great feat. LF are definitely musician's musicians. For some strange reason, I never came across Shake Me Up earlier in my life, but a few years ago I stumbled across it in a used-record-and-tape store. Anything by LF had to be worth trying, and I was right--this work is fantastic.

Tired of the old used tape, I purchased the CD here off Amazon. In one word, this album is "versatile."

Spider's Blues - Fun story song in typical LF style.
Shake Me Up - Straighforward rock and roll.
Things Happen - An introspective tune. It's all gonna work out!
Mojo Haiku - Gripping rock funk - "in your face" ... quite dynamic w/ a great drum line.
Loved and Lied To - Catchy love-gone-wrong song w/ great slide guitar.
Don't Try So Hard - Well placed in order - ties to previous track. concept. Great vocal syntax & musical dynamics.
Boom Box Car - Another fun LF story song - Somewhat simplistic musically, but fun.
Fast and Furious - A straighforward driving rock number.
Livin' On Dreams - Musically intricate: Lots of 2/4 measures slipped in creating catchy hooks. One of my favs.
Clownin' - Fun, upbeat, and engaging, makes you wanna dance.
Down In Flames - an absolutely beautiful composition with intricate harmonies and lyrics. A golden river of music.

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. If you like true musicianship with riffs and lyrics that catch and hold you, you will love this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Began hitting their stride and then..........2000-07-13

...Craig Fuller left or was booted or something! While this album isn't a classic, it is a whole hill of fun and background vocalist (soon to be lead vocalist) Shaun Murphy really shines. Their roadhouse/cajun mix was really becoming infectious and it would continue with their next release. While Lowell George was not forgotten, the band seemed to becoming a little more comfortable with his absence.

3 out of 5 stars Some Quality Material.......2000-04-11

Whereas this recording is not one the same level as Let It Roll or Representing The Mambo, there plenty of snappy tunes that will get your toes tapping. Spiders Blues and Clowning have spunky rhythms that will catch your listening ear and have you saying,"Thats pretty grooving material". Mojo Haiku and Loved and Lied To feature some strong vocals by Craig Fuller. Whereas Shaun Murphy was an excellent replacement, Craig added alot to the Little Feat sound when he was on board. This collection has a nice balance of songs. I rate it 3 1/2 stars to distinguish it from the ordinary three stars in my previous reviews.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent CD - suffered from poor promotion.......2000-03-02

The last CD from Little Feat with Craig Fuller on lead vocals. The band jokingly refers to this CD as their "stealth album". While a solid collection of classic Little Feat originals, the band's label at the time, Morgan Creek, was struggling, and subsequently got out of the music business. The band occasionally plays songs from this CD at live shows, especially "Spiders Blues" and the title cut.

How can you have an ACDC tribute album without Highway To Hell. The music on this album is very good, but is unfullfilling without the aforemenioned number. I encourage them to make a second CD with more ACDC tunes on it, to really cover all the bases.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent CD!!!!!!.......2003-12-19

I think that the reviewer that gave this CD a single star has not heard this CD because:

    1. It is an excellent CD
    2. The guy who did it, did the Coldplay CD
    3. The site he gave is the Record Label that this CD is on and this CD can be bought there

I have listened to this CD over and over again and it is one of my favorite string tribute CDs. I own all of the CDs that this group has put out and if you want to see a list of all of the CDs they have done, you can check out their String Tribute Forum at:

i respect the whole neo-classical thing, but this cd is bad. sounds like somone sequenced the songs in their synthesizer. check out http://www.thetributeto.com/acdc/ . they perform their tributes, and do it well. i haven't heard their ac/dc tribute, but their other tributes (linkin park, 311, coldplay) are awesome.

    5 out of 5 stars Totally Suprised!!!.......2003-09-01

I read about this CD on an AC/DC Fan site and they had a link to purchase it here. I bought the CD without hearing any clips or anything. So, buying it sight unseen, made me feel a little aprehensive.

Well, when it arrived I couldn't wait. I took it with me to work and played it in the car on the way. WHAT A GREAT CD & A GREAT IDEA!!! I love this CD! After hearing how well done this CD was, I decided to do something special for my wife ....and .... I took the next day off from work (which was a Friday) and prepared a wonderful steak dinner while my wife was at her job. I got a really good bottle of wine and I set the table with our finest table settings ... Candles lit and everything prepared ...When she got home, I had the candles burning, the lights were out, the table was set and I started the CD.... KAHPOWW!!! She freaked completely out! Needless to say, we had a wonderful time and what a way to romance my Rock & Roll Queen!!!

We've been fans of AC/DC since the 80s and this is probably one of our favorite AC/DC CDs, now!

I would suggest this CD to anyone who loves AC/DC and wants to add some spark to their romance .... We have candlelit dinners a couple times a month now and this CD is the main attraction!!!

This performance, the only one available in English, is problematic. Best is Yves Abel's leadership of the orchestra, which sounds wonderful, imbuing Puccini's lush score with just the right exoticism and emphasis. But aside from Gregory Yurisch's fine Sharpless, the singers don't please. Paul Charles Clarke as Pinkerton is lacking stylistically and vocally, and as Butterfly, Cheryl Barker sounds under strain and never pretty. While she has the power and feeling for the big second-act climax (the sighting of the ship), she never for a moment sounds fragile or girlish, not even in the all-important early scenes. English or not, this set isn't in the running. Stick with Callas or Scotto in Italian, and follow the libretto. --Robert Levine

              3 out of 5 stars A touching English Butterfly.......2002-03-27

Anyone familiar with Cheryl Barker's Butterfly will be interested in hearing this recording. I have heard her in the role twice - in Auckland and London - and her voice has filled out as the years have gone on. She hasn't a large italianate soprano; the sound is too slender somehow. Yet there is the paradox - it has great carrying power and a decent cutting edge to make itself heard above the orchestral climaxes. What really impresses is the sense of vulnerability and moral strength she imparts, making sense of the big moments of the secong act. The sound in Act one is gorgeous (and a super D flat in theentrance aria) and she differentiates impressively between the child-bride and the embittered woman of the two acts.

She is surrounded by a mixed supporting cast. Jean Rigby is maternal, warm and affecting as Suzuki. Gregory Yurisich makes Sharpless' dilemma more understandable than usual, rather than being completely ineffectual. Paul Charles Clarke perhaps illustrates Pinkerton's arrogance with a degree of vocal swagger, but the sound is rough-hewn and unlovely save for some moments in the love duet. Stuart Kale's Goro is suitable ingratiating and oily.

Abel's conducting is the other chief draw of this set. That he has experience of the score in the theatre means that his pacing is really superb, and the lush orchestration is given its due, the potent intermezzo during the overnight vigil sounding suitably ominous.

This won't replace the classic Butterfly recordings, but in the absendce of any new ones recently, and for acceptable diction in an English version, it is certainly worth the (not very high) price. Recommended.
