Very nice CD but..........2006-08-14

I'd lost track of Mr. Cohen until the new movie "I'm Your Man" came out this year. The movie goes into the back story on a song I'd never heard before "Hallelujah". I had to have it and found it here on 'Various Positions'.

You HAVE to buy this CD for the song "Hallelujah". Hear it once and you will never get it out of your head (dare I say soul?).

Cohen's Best.......2006-07-23

This is Cohen at the peak of his ability and the last Cohen album to use real musicians throughout. "The Hunter", "Hallelujah", "The Night Comes On", and "If it Be Your Will" are brilliant. "The Captain" is a more mature version of "The Butcher" (from "Songs from a Room"). At first I thought "Heart with No Companion" objectionably drab, but now I see the album needs something lighter at this particular point; it actually works well in context. The reviewers who prefer bowdlerized versions (which, by the way, are not "covers"; this is not what the term "cover" means) of "Hallelujah" are nuts.

just a correction.......2006-01-11

I am just writing this review to correct Alexander from Russia, who cites this album as a Christianity peddler. Leonard Cohen is a Jew, who unlike Bob Dylan (on John Wesley Harding) embraces his sense of Jewish heritage and religion within his music. Alexander, you've brought your own interpretation to what is a distinctly Jewish artist and his work.

Obviously Leonard Cohen has numerous great albums out there, however this is one of my favorites. I consider "Various Positions" to be part of my essential trilogy, along with "I'm Your Man" and "The Future". Truth be known, I almost skipped this review because I felt this album is beyond description. The music and lyrics are just absolutely amazing, and I feel bad for those who have yet to discover Leonard Cohen. This is one of few albums I can put on in my livingroom, and just stare out the window for 45 minutes. Listening to it is an event. His perfect songs "Dance Me To The End Of Love", "Hallelujah", and "If It Be Your Will" are all here, but I also love "Law", "Coming Back To You", and "Hunter's Lullaby". If looking for a collection, I suggest "More Best Of", or his 2-disc "Essential Cohen".

Powerful music from a talented writer.......2004-04-08

Leonard Cohen's songs are awesome to listen to. His talents as a musician and writer are apparent in any of his songs. In my opinion, there isn't a bad one in the bunch. I'm no musical expert, but I don't think there could have been an improvement on any of his songs. His music is not without religious influence, but I'm hard-pressed to determine what kind of religious message he's trying to convey.

I first heard Leonard Cohen's music on "Pump up the volume", a movie starring Christian Slater about a high-school student running a pirate radio station. In a couple of the scenes of the movie, Slater's character plays some of Leonard Cohen's songs, including "If it be your will."

His songs have also been used in popular movies like Shrek, which features "Hallelujah," sang by someone else.

This 2-CD set includes a 44-page booklet containing an introduction by Thomas C. Daly, heir and custodian of the De Hartmann Estate, and an extensive article by Wim van Dullemen describing the history of the `39' Movements. This set of Movements is regarded by many as Gurdjieff's magnum opus and the summary of his whole teaching to mankind.
Van Dullemen's article is based largely on interviews with pupils who themselves actually stood in Gurdjieff's classes while he created these Movements. Their experiences, insights and recollections reveal the historical picture with clarity and in unprecedented detail. What's more, the booklet includes a 5-page chronology of Thomas de Hartmann's life and major musical works.
Lavishly illustrated, the booklet further contains thirty photographs of Gurdjieff, De Hartmann, of Movements and historical documents, many of which have never been published before.
The genesis of this whole project, which took several years before it was finally completed, lies with Gert-Jan Blom, the producer of these CDs.

The 37 pieces for the 39 Series were composed by Thomas de Hartmann, c. 1950.
Interpretations of all the pieces-as regards tempo, rhythm, characteristics of melody and other musical dynamics-have been based on personal instructions received over many years from direct pupils of G. I. Gurdjieff. Also, we have studied and taken into account the earliest available recordings of these compositions. Originally no titles, only N-numbers, were given. These N-numbers as well as the indications of tempo stem from the first private publication prepared by de Hartmann himself,
The earliest available recordings, made in 1951, of these compositions, have been studied and taken into account as well.

A refreshing taste of originality........2005-03-11

In an era where most music sounds the same, Sex Positions give a fresh breath of originality in both their loud name and quality sound. Keep an eye on these guys- they're bound to be the biggest band to come out of Deathwish Records. An amazing, earth-shattering release with well written lyrics completely different from the cliche's of todays music business aside from one or two songs following the anti-war trend. A must buy.

Now this is how you push the envelope.......2004-05-25

Coming from virtually nowhere, this enigmatic band has roots in raw hardcore but with a serious progressive temperament. The sonic experimentations are interesting permutations that add to an already "thinking outside of the box" style. A slight nod of the head should go to EVERY TIME I DIE from the gang in SEX POSITIONS because without their mild commercial success, SEX POSITIONS would probably not exist. Not that they are stale clones of an EVERY TIME I DIE incarnation but the similarities are present. Fortunately, they aren't glaring ones either. The mystery behind their music is one of rare quality and the hyperactive rhythms mixed in with the frustrated style vocals are just as cerebral as they are erratic. They have displayed a capacity for constructing music that is teeming with unpredictability and wonder. The guitar scales are something similar to what a child who needs riddlen would play; steering back and forth to up and down but still maintaining the timing. Thrown into the fray are a couple of samples that further enhances this orchestrated chaos. Hell, even the packaging on the CD makes little sense. As we are all aware, there are two kinds of progressive music; One that is made up of guesswork and one that is initially perceived as estimation but with enough musicianship, letting the listeners know that the artists planned it that way. SEX POSITIONS is of the latter selection. To simplify, SEX POSITIONS are the newest version of multiplicity in music and if you don't get it, you were never meant to. For those who do, this is a must have!

Mind stretching.......2004-04-23

Dimitri Tikovoi is a master of his art - this is an amazingly versatile album stretching electo dance with curiously sexy (and hardcore) lyricics - a definate buy for 2004. You only have to look at the artists that have worked on it to appreciate the level of cred ;-)

True Review.......2003-06-23

Before you even consider buying this album be aware its like nothing you've ever heard before. This is the definition of a concept album. Its more or less a new style of music, it bridges rock, electronica, r n b, jazz, tradition french music and ends up like an Electroclash album done to perfection without annoying repeatitiveness of normal electroclash.

You only really need to look at the names of contributors to know how good this thing is going to be. I discovered a single of Metric System lying around in a record store for 50 pence and thought go for it (im a placebo fan). I can tell you that that track, like every other track on here, is perfectly unique and cannot be compared to anything else. Each track is totally different and yet they fit so well together.

I advise you to get this album if you like new and interesting music. Its as not pretentious as Warp Records etc. and there are few blips and beats of normal experimentia to speak of. It also deserves more prestige than some concept albums i.e. Maxim's "Hell's Kitchen" (which makes a good partner to this btw).

It is the epitome of style and sexy chíc with a nice stop off at deviant/twisted electronica.

Well worth tracking down.......2006-02-22

If you're an indiepop fan this album is well worth tracking down. Great melodies and harmonies that will be stuck in your head for the rest of the day. Having seen the Positions many times live, I was most happy that the record captures the energy and spirit of their live performances. Love it!

I did give the record 4 stars just because I feel strongly the Positions will get even better over time.

Blissful Indy-Pop.......2005-12-20

A fun poppy album with obvious 80's and indy-brit-pop influences. They remind me of the Go-Betweens except The Positions use a female singer and horns. I want to see them on tour with Belle and Sebastian. Much of the album is similar sounding, but that makes it a very relaxing listen. 4.5 Stars.

yeah, I couldn't listen to this cd much. I listened to the first track and had to skim through the rest. This cd is crap, I'm glad I only paid a dollar for it.

I only gave it 2 stars because the lyrics were somewhat creative.
