5 out of 5 stars I Am In A LIME HOUSE!.......2007-05-15

"Rolling in Black tar, baby"...."Pod", first released in 1990; Steve Albini produced; is really fun, full of "Glorious" Pop beauty, that possibly transcends lo-fi minimalism.
It was only a few years ago when this was my # 1 Favorite album that I owned, it still is one of my TOP favorites.
Kim Deal is absolutely one of my Favorite female singers - sweet and sexy.
Just plain beautiful, really lets you free your mind, you know?
Listening to these 12 songs from Opener "Glorious" to track 5: more up-beat "Hellbound" all the way through "Metal Man" - actually got me back into writing -poems and short stories. Every single song on "Pod" sounds more simple, more subdued and playful than her second release in 1993 with her hit "Cannonball" and album- "Last Splash" - & "Pod" is as you may already have guessed far less intense than The Pixies - her other Band w/ Black Francis (Frank Black)
"Happiness Is A Warm Gun" is my Favorite Beatles song ever(I know it's hard to choose for most)-and I was excited to see and hear The Breeders cover(wonderfully done) here.
I have many Favorites on here; every single song is a joy! ...but, for this review I really thought about it..."Iris" and "Glorious" are my TOP 2; followed by probably the happiest w/ catchy hooks- track - "Hellbound" - one of the Most fun songs done by an all-girl group that I have ever heard :)
"Fortunately Gone" and "Limehouse" are more Glorious Fun - just like the opener reads...."Metal Man" may be my least Favorite track, it always has been, it's hard to say why, maybe it's just because it's the Closer, but the other 11 songs strongly make up for it. "Pod" is the best (side project, band's album) outside of the Pixies. Simply Wonderful - seems to get better every time I listen to it.

3 out of 5 stars Listen more than once.......2005-09-05

If you enjoyed Last Splash and Title TK then eventually you'll enjoy this work by the Breeders as well. But don't expect to be completely blown away like with Last Splash. This work took me several listens to get into it. Over all though it's worth looking into!

4 out of 5 stars yes, it's great!.......2005-09-04

kim deal's band put out this wonderful little gem of a record back in 1990 (jeezus, that was 15 years ago at the time of me writing this!)...i bought the tape when it came out since i was a big big fan of the pixies (and still am). and i couldn't wait to get my hands on any other form of music that those members might put out. i followed the breeders brief career but this first album stands out as my favorite. one of the reasons that "Pod" works so well, is that there is a very simple dark element to the songwriting. josephine's basslines are basic and direct, the drumming is politely adequate and the guitars (courtesy of kim and tanya donelly) add the perfect amount of spice. this is certainly a case of the sum equals it's parts. there's not alot of pop singles on this album (as there were plenty of them on the next album "Last Splash") but the unsettling pop genius behind such songs as "Oh!", "Iris", "Doe", and the brilliant cover of "Happiness is a Warm Gun", reflect a wonderful core of a rare and delightful band. the went way more pop for their next effort, which is still great, but this "pod" is the one that keeps opening up new worlds and spinning those old memories for me with every listen.

4 out of 5 stars Not so bad, not so good.......2005-08-23

A work that resents some fact of to be a disk carved alone for fun, it is had in fact the idea that the arrangements are pulled a little road. However in back lighting it is seen clear the talent of kim deal, uncontested heroin of the American antimainstream

5 out of 5 stars my first breeders album.......2005-07-03

this is the first Breeders album that I've bought in my life. It definitly seems like a good beginning.
A good comparison for these songs would be the Pixies song Gigantic. Since Kim Deal wrote the song and sang it, along with these Breeders songs.
I recommend it to anyone who digs somewhat poppy alterna-chick bands.
4.5 stars, kurt cobain recommends this album!

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

The multi-hyphenated (rap-metal-hip-hop-reggae) foursome P.O.D. enjoyed indie success as a popular Christian metal band before their 1999 major-label debut, The Fundamental Elements of Southtown, sold platinum, establishing P.O.D. as a secular sensation. Featuring the soaring single "Alive," the San Diego quartet's sophomore effort, Satellite, is even more a part of the nu-metal mainstream than its predecessor. Throughout, front man Sonny is more rapper than singer, especially on rhythmically forward, Rage Against the Machine-like songs such as "Boom," "Masterpiece Conspiracy," and the melodic yet mosh-worthy "The Messenjah." With positive, spiritual, and personal lyrics (several songs, including the title track, were influenced by the death of Sonny's mother), Satellite runs the gamut from lilting to intensely aggro, often within one song. In a nod to P.O.D.'s influences, special guests include Jamaican icon Eek-A-Mouse on "Ridiculous" and Bad Brains legend HR on "Without Jah, Nothin'." This cool reggae, meshed with offbeat punk power, is placed alongside mellower midtempo rockers, including "Ghetto," to round out a varied and stellar album. --Katherine Turman

4 out of 5 stars I love you Sonny!!!!.......2007-03-11

After hearing the Zion song from the Matrix soundtrack I got hip to P.O.D. This was their best CD in this genre I had ever heard, then I bought their Wildfire CD. This is a deep CD.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad for a "Pop" Rock band.......2006-12-12

P.O.D's "Satellite" is a fun, catchy pop rock album, and this is coming from someone who cant stand 99% of todays pop music. I was surprised that I would enjoy this album so much, as I was always a fan of "Youth of a Nation" I understand that the band takes a beating sometimes because they are considered a "Christian" rock band, but that doesnt take away from their musically ability. With 15 tracks on this album, there is very little filler, which is impressive when you consider that most of these type of rock/hip-hip type bands are one hit wonders (Crazy Town anyone??)Even though there isn't really anything special going on musically, even though I will admit the bassist and drummer are above average, it still a pretty "tight" and most of the tunes are catchy, even though I hate to admit it. This is a solid, above average album, that I am sure fans of all musically genres will enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars OK.......2006-10-26

Satellite has a couple of good songs - 'Alive' and 'Youth of the Nation' -mixed in with a lot of lesser ones.

The music is very hard rock for the most part, screaming actually. There are several songs that are at least partially rap. It may be good for one whose taste runs that way, but it's not my preference.

The lyrics are pretty good, much better than most of this genre.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band .......2006-08-19

I've seen POD at first I didn't like them at all but after listening to them I realized I enjoy their music. If you think that just because they're Christian means that they can't make music then you're very wrong. Their lyrics are strong doesn't matter what genre they are in it has deep meanings. Also they are great live.
Example of a meaningful lyrics in their songs is in Youth Of A Nation the lyrics about the 12 year old girl and the male who had thoughts of suicide because they sing about real situations doesn't mean that they suck. Another good band that was Christian is MXPX not this type of music more punk better Blink then Blink 182 and of course Chevelle.

1 out of 5 stars One of the most boring albums I have ever heard.......2006-08-04

Satellite sucks, and it's one of the worst cd's I have ever bought. It's typical radio rock rap ________ at it's worst. IT has a lack of creativityu, it's boring as ______, and has _________ riffs and the most generic riffs as well. Imagine the most generic rock out there today pared with the worst rapping ever, and you get this piece of _______.

I like YOuth of The Nation, but that was before I knew that there was a band called Rage Against The Machine. What am I saying? Just __________ get some far superior rock, and your done. Don't waste your time with worthless ____.

Want rock music with rapping in it that's actually good? ANything by Rage Against The Machine, 311, and of course, THe Bloodhound Gang have more talent than t his _________ band.

5 out of 5 stars Prancing Stallion Running Over Hillside.......2007-05-03

In the winter of 1995 I purchased Ween's 1991 album "The Pod," 23 tracks of Scotchguard-induced panic that often provoked its own creators to break out into giggling fits. It was extremely fitting that at the time I only bought cassette tapes, because after buying this album in CD format, years later, I detected that it just doesn't have the same chilling effect. The martian drone of a rolling tape adds lo-fi ambience to an already horrifyingly lo-fi album, recorded on a beat-up four track over ten months in 1990. Supposedly Dean and Gene Ween recorded everything in a fly-infested apartment (with barn attached) while attending college in New Hope, Pennsylvania.

Eleven and a half years later it is the only album that forces me to envision where, when and in what state Ween recorded each track. Which drugs provoked which songs? Which room did they record each track in? What time of day? ("Boing," for instance, a quietly played blues jam with disturbingly hushed vocals boasting how "Rip Van Winkle can s-t on a shingle at dawn," sounds like it was recorded by one Ween member while another was sleeping on the couch in the same room, around six in the morning). Eerie from start to finish, genius to some, and bile to others, it is by far my favorite Ween album, far darker and far more chaotic than the lighthearted Phish-fan approved hippie soul records to come ("Chocolate and Cheese,""White Pepper") yet somehow less of a juvenile "my ex girlfriend sucks" rant than its predecessor ("God Ween Satan: The Oneness"). And there's plenty of truly awful but admittedly catchy pop to indicate the mockingly romantic side of Ween displayed on albums to come.

"The Pod" is a truly genreless concoction. There are glimpses of metal ("Sketches of Winkle") as well as purposefully awful homages to bubble-gum pop ("Oh My Dear (Falling in Love)") that usually fell into the #41-or-below position on 1970s billboard charts; the most spellbinding aspect of the record is Dean and Gene Ween's undying devotion to musical shrapnel and syrup alike, ugly dissonance here and uglier beauty there. Clearly, the helium voices and off-time, off-key guitars of "Oh My Dear" indicate that Ween are basically a joke, but not a G-rated parody joke along the lines of "Weird" Al Yankovic. "The Pod" is an R-rated joke album, with songs flangerized enough to shame J. Mascis, songs that tease the audience with their endless stopping and starting--"Go ahead, hate us," the creators smugly dare the listener, and you either crack up along with them or hate them.

I've had friends threaten to kill me for playing them Ween. Some people just don't get the brilliance of, say, a song like "She F-s Me." With its protagonist stupidly mumbling sweet (and selfish) nothings about the girl he's smitten with, among them "When I'm cold I know she's keeping me warm," while a disgruntled background voice, perhaps of the guy's retarded friend, repeatedly chants "Pork roll egg and cheese on a kaiser bun," it's quite simply the oddest love ballad in history, with the possible exception of Zappa's "Jewish Princess."

Indeed, "pork roll egg and cheese" is the flimsy metaphor of the album--there's even a song with that title. The album sure has its share of meaty tracks, cheesy tracks, and tracks that probably are the musical equivalent of undercooked eggs--chock full of protein but runny, mucusy (and what do you know, there IS a lyric somewhere about a "sweaty mucus bed"). The whole album, for me, is bringing beauty out of ugliness; it's as if the creators see a room full of sniffly-nosed toddlers screaming and coughing up snot, and to them it's music.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE STALLION......MANG!!!!.......2006-09-19

This is, in fact, my first ween review
I own all of their albums,
excepting for two
the country one, plus the debut.

Where all else i own by the band has a sheen
a sparkle and gloss
though weird it may seem
all these other records are catchy and leen.

The Pod is, you'll find, a strange and vast beast
it's a dirty, muddy mess
a poisoned feast.
and to think that some like it the least..

It's kinda like a blanket held over some jewels
on first glance its all
made with the same tools
a 4-track recorder and some drugs consumed by fools

but upon further listens the blanket comes away
and slowly reveals
the colour through the grey
and the demented genius that makes you want to stay

and discover the most unique album round
that manky little mess
by those stoner clowns
that spooky funny trek through the dark underground.

4 out of 5 stars This Is Your Music On Drugs........2006-04-23

The best way to describe the songs on this cd would be if you had a talented song writer come up with some great music, but then have it performed by two unbelievably high guys on a 4-track. Most of the songs seem like complete garbage, but if you look past the weird sound effects, drum machine, and distorted vocals, you'll find some great songs. To best hear them like that, just listen to recent live versions.

My personal favorites are Oh My Dear (Falling In Love), Frank, Pork Roll Egg and Cheese, and Sketches of Winkle.

5 out of 5 stars some gravy fries...........2006-04-17

I cannot deny this is one of the most brilliant rock records in history. It's like the mangiest, smelliest, yet most adorable stray dog you ever met on the street. It is rough, it is raw, and, at the time it came out, was "wrong" in every way compared to everything else at the time. It's one of Ween's funniest records... the more you listen to it the more the jokes sink in, to the point where it becomes part of your life, mang.

Up there with The Mollusk if you ask me!

5 out of 5 stars raw, unadulterated boognish worship... the life blood of ween.......2006-03-24

If you ever listened to their later albums (c & c, mollusk, white pepper, quebec and most recently shinola) and wondered, how do these guys come up with stuff so cool and original while maintaining such high musical quality? Your questions will be answered when venturing a listen to The Pod. God Ween Satan was kind of the first discovery of brown and boognish (two words any ween afficionado should become familiar with immediately) and is a mad cap romp through the new world.

The Pod is the mastering of this world, and the establishment of a musical expression that is unparalleled in its uniqueness. The Pod is the reason why Ween fans are so anal about other alleged Ween fans. It's like an unadulterated look into the eyes of the boognish, and look that none of us could have uncovered on our own. Ween gets inside you if you get this album, and you feel happier and weirder for it. If you don't get The Pod, you do not get Ween. And that's the bottom line.

To get away from all this philosophical bulls***, this is an unparalleled sing a long album. Go ahead, get in the car, or gather your friends around the stereo at home. Scream "Dr. Rock" . Wail "right to the ways and the rules of the world." Feel on top of the world as "The Stallion." Feel the fuzzy glow of "she ... me." Better yet, go see Ween live. They are kings on stage. Kings among men.

With their aggro music, tattoos, piercings, and dreadlocks, P.O.D. (Payable on Death) might be conveniently filed next to Deftones or Rage Against the Machine. However, like U2, whose "Bullet the Blue Sky" they cover, P.O.D. are actually a Christian-based rock band, though not overtly religious enough to scare nonbelieving music fans away. This multiethnic quartet from the Southtown area of San Diego purveys an amalgam of modern music; elements of rap, metal, reggae, and hip-hop permeate this 16-track debut. P.O.D. doesn't bring much new to their hybrid style on The Fundamental Elements of Southtown, but what they do, they do well. From the gentle, reggae-tinged "Set Your Eyes to Zion" to the heavy grind of "Hollywood" and the rap-metal of "Lie Down," P.O.D.'s diverse and rockin' musical messages of positivism should make the foursome, already well known on the Christian rock circuit, a band to reckon with in secular circles. --Katherine Turman

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Some thought provoking music here folks! .......2006-07-24

This is the album that got me into POD. The lyrics on this album are the most overt that I have heard from any band.
"Greetings" is simply an introduction to how confrontational this album would be. This album displays true feelings, not just appeasement for the casual rock fan. 5/5
"Hollywood" puts down the "money, power, and fame" ideology of current stars. POD makes a stand that they will not be corrupted. 5/5
"Southtown" is very rhythmic and memorable. It explains the humble beginnings of the band. 5/5
"Checkin' Levels"-The band pretty much messed around with the recording sound here. Sonny does a quick freestyle song.
"Rock the Party"-This song was big on MTV. I thought it may have been a little too self-absorbed, but the tempo changes are great. Plenty of disc scratching sounds in this song makes it sound like you're in a club. Pretty unique. 4/5
"Lie Down"-Heavy, heavy guitar here. Quite a bit of yelling. I didn't care for this one too much. 3/5
"Set Your Eyes to Zion"-This is a very frank song relaying the gospel message. It's a very contemplative song about Christ's forgiveness. It's soft, but there's a lot of excellent melody. 5/5
"Lo Siento"-Simply an instrumently interlude, quite short.
"Bullet the Blue Sky"-Very surreal remake of a U2 classic. Sonny is very emotional on this track as he should be. It's a very vivid portrayal of the crucifixion of Christ. 5/5
"Psalm 150"-A man reads the Psalm aloud in Hebrew.

The rest of the CD wasn't really that memorable, save "Freestlye" and "Outkast".

"Freestyle"-showed the band's reggae side a little bit. It was pretty good. 5/5
"Outkast"-This is a hard song, but I think it shows the band's frustration about being Christians while reaching the secular audience for Christ. This band gets bothered by the constant bashing it gets on both sides. I appreciate that honesty. 5/5.

I give this album a 4 1/2 because there were some very powerful songs in here. The end of the album has a lot of filler in my opinion, but the 5/5 songs are too good to pass up. Get this thing if you can. I haven't listened to the first 10 songs in a long time, yet the lyrics are still so clear in my mind.

4 out of 5 stars p.o.d.- but not at their finest.......2006-04-10

You would think that given the rip of this album that I gave Christian hardcore legends P.O.D. on my review of their album Satellite that my rating would be lower than this. However, the phrase "It'll grow on you." came true for me after I got this CD from a friend who really didn't like it. Though not as good as Satellite or their recent effort Testify, The Fundamental Elements of Southtown showcases much of what made P.O.D. great in the first place.

P.O.D.'s Rastafarian-lookalike singer Sonny Sandoval and the rest of the P.O.D. crew (including the now-gone guitarist Traa Daniels, replaced by Jason Truby, formerly of another Christian hardcore band called Living Sacrifice) break it down with the CD's highlight track, Southtown. Rock the Party is another standout track, with its odd music video and riffs that only a pro could play right. Other than that, though, there really wasn't much greatness. Now, don't interpret that as a statement that the rest of the CD sucked, because it didn't; the other tracks were awesome, just not so much as Southtown and Rock the Party.

For those of y'all who actually care, this is P.O.D., and I end my review with this:

Sonny Sandoval- vocals
Traa Daniels- guitar
Marcos Curiel- bass
Wuv Anderson- drums

5 out of 5 stars For Ms. Rich.......2006-01-20

The reconstruction commences; the soldiers equip for the lessons
My life, a sacrifice is made new through these confessions
Manifested, this joy is my desire
Light this fire to flames; praise the name, Jehovah Jireh
Is my provider, the truth that lives inside of this fighter?
Take me higher, Master, Sire makes me a good rider
I'm gonna ride on down til I break through the front lines
And ain't going home until I gets mines.

This is "Tribal Warriors" from the "Fundemental Elements of Southtown" Album.

I'll have you know that Jehovah Jireh is a name for God and just because they use "Jah" instead of God does not make them a non christian band. Why would Family Christian Bookstores carry their music? The reason they use "Jah" is so they can draw people in because once people hear Jesus or Christ or God they turn from it because they have been hurt by a so called CHRISTian or have been hurt in a church or whatever the story may be people aren't so willing anymore to even hear the gospel.

Ozzfest, yes they do play at that.......BUT they go out into the crowds and WITNESS to people that is why they are there. Whether you want to accept that or not that is up to you. They may have said that they aren't a Christian band but that doesn't make them as people not christians. They have said many times that they are in the business for giving the fans a positive message to let them know that whatever they're going through there is something they can turn to with that problem. If my band was big like that then I would do the same, you don't want people running from you before they even hear your message. This is what P.O.D. has done they have made it so they can draw people in with a positive message and tell them the truth. So whatever you HEARD their religion is, is not true and thats a fact if you want to email me about this I can show you other songs that prove them to be christians.

Sincerely,
Josh

P.S.
For the Review part of it this cd is great and most of their cd's are and don't forget to pick up the new album too. "Testify" is the name of the new album P.O.D. has a great purpose in the music industry and if you study up on them you will see why I say that. But if you want great rapcore with a positive message this is what you want to buy.

1 out of 5 stars I really give Zero stars...........2006-01-05

I know some of you will not agree with me on this but..I feel this needs to be said. I don't beileve that POD is in fact a Christian band. Listen to the lyrics is there any mention of Jesus at all? YOu may hear "JAH" or "I and I" which is the beliefs of Rastafarianism.

Rastafarians believe that Haile Selassie, emperor of Ethiopia, (also named Ras Tafari), who died in 1975, was Almighty God in the flesh. Rastafarians worship Haile Selassie, or Ras Tafari, as God.

"The Rastafarians reject Christianity and firmly believe in Haile Selassie as the returned Messiah and Ethiopia as the promised land of all Black people."

They also appear on the "Blair Witch 2" soundtrack with Marilyn Manson and others like him. WHY...would any believer want to be on the same CD as MANSON? Don't you think that it's a bit hypocritical?
Marilyn Manson, proudly boasts:
"Hopefully, I'll be remembered as the person who brought an end to Christianity." (Spin, August 1996, p. 34)

And what about our youth that follow them... A band who calls themselves Christian but then goes on the OZZFEST Tour. What's up with that?

When P.O.D. is asked the logical and honest question - isn't their a conflict of interest when a so-called Christian band performs with the hellions and wickedness at Ozzfest. And Marcos, of P.O.D. replies "we're not necessarily a Christian band"!

You might want to research the bands that you are listening to. I use to listen to POD when they first came out..but I felt something was missing in their music. So I did a lot of research and found a lot of information that was troubling to me to say the least.

Most remix collections are disappointing, as new snare beats and/or bass lines do not a revelation make. However, one might expect better from the Afro Celt Sound System, as their savagely exuberant, flawlessly produced African/Celtic/Eastern collisions in club-land have re-defined both world and dance music for all time. On Pod, the band has not only assembled a series of eminently collectible remixes but added fresh instrumentals to certain tracks, giving recent band members a workout while linking the band's various incarnations. Highlights include the ethereal "Johnny At Sea," which was previously available only as a byte on the band¹s website, and Toshiro Matsuura's "Fantasisita Re-Formation" remix of "Full Moon Low Tide," on which remote, forlorn-sounding bagpipes are enveloped in organically primal yet frigidly machine-like barrages of beats. The 2-disc package includes a DVD containing a pair of videos, plus strenuously edited highlights from the group's epochal 2001 performance at WOMAD USA. --Christina Roden

4 out of 5 stars An Antti Keisala Comment: New Tapestries of Sound.......2007-03-01

I admit of not having been into this album until recently. I'm not generally fond of mixing songs that work in themselves and in the given context. But after "Anatomic", my stance towards this album changed. It's nice to listen to, the soundscapes are as rich as ever; I've come to think of this as the first cousin to "Anatomic" once removed, the needed chill-out between "Seed" and "Anatomic".

This is, above all, a fun album to listen to. Sort of like elevator music wrapped around itself times two. A new twist to the clichéd remix genre, much like how the band has been to the whole world music fusion phenomena. Just listen to the remixes of the song "Release", which is turned from a lament to celebration.

The distinction with "Pod" is that I can't find it drawing attention to itself nowadays I tend to listen to much of my music albums from start to finish while working, the music affecting in the background, and what stands out behind my wall of thoughts is not the difference of the remixed song when compared to the original but the overall looseness. This is a chill-out album if you're ever going to find one, at least according to my definition. That is, I think of that kind of music as such that channels your energy in ways that doesn't distract you from what you're doing yet is smooth and does work to change your perception of the surrounding environment. Profound musically yet not too marring; good-hearted; not too heavy-thinking and carelessly emotional. I prefer the original versions with only the Peter Gabriel song "When You're Falling" as an exception, but this album works so finely as a tapestry onto which you can hang your thoughts. It is decorated white space.

With best regards,
AK

5 out of 5 stars Real Good!!!.......2007-01-19

I'm Spinning Instructor and I need music for push people to ride, Pod is perfect for that.....I'm very happy and I recomend other album from them, "ANATOMIC", fantastic too.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than you expect..........2005-07-23

If you're put off by the idea of an album composed entirely of remixes of tracks that, in their own right, are more than good enough then think again... because this is really quite different. Conceived as an integrated whole, the Afro Celts take some of their best tracks and along with their guest producers come up with something that's closer to a superb live album than a series of "interesting" studio reworkings. Opening with a brilliantly ecstatic and very different version of "Rise Above" its trick is to sequence these harder, more club & afro beat dominated remixes pretty seamlessly into what becomes not only a genuinely exciting & cohesive record, but one that, if you know nothing about the Afro Celts, you'll be absolutely knocked out by.

The problem of course is that most people considering buying "POD" will already have many of its tracks and, as a result, comparisons become inevitable. But even on this pretty unfair basis it delivers some asbsolutely "must have" gems including, in addition to its quite stunning opener, versions of "Further in Time", "When You're Falling", "Persistence of Memory" & "Whirly 3", that are arguably better than the originals, two excellent "club" remixes of "Release", and the previously unavailable and ridiculously good "Johnny at Sea". Plus... you get a DVD which includes two ingenious and unforgettable music videos of "Persistence of Memory" & "When You're Falling", an excellent Dolby 5.1 remix of "North" with cleverly sequenced graphics, and a compilation of the group's WOMAD USA 2001 concert that really does capture how amazing they were when playing these tracks live.

Good enough then, from either perspective, to justify some of your hard-earned cash and much, much better than you may expect because it is, quite simply, this excellent group's best album to date. And that's saying something.

3 out of 5 stars A Little Too Mixed Up.......2004-07-23

I am glad the Afro-Celt Sound System decided to revert to their original name after a brief stint (i.e. their last CD) as the Afro-Celts. I have been a big fan of theirs, and own all four previous releases. That is perhaps why I have mixed feelings (pun not intended) about this new CD, with "clubbed-up" versions of their original tunes. They have always been a band that, surprisingly and successfully, has melded Celtic and African song and instrumental traditions, with a techno update. And they know how to keep a groove going. Maybe it's because I appreciate their musicianship more than their dance-ability, but I don't quite understand the reason behind this disc, which sounds like a "greatest hits on Ecstasy". To me, the original tracks had plenty of movement and beat to them, and for the most part I still prefer the originals. This is not to say I dislike the disc; the source material itself makes it still a cut above the average remix compilation. But given the choice, almost without exception, I'd rather listen to the original versions. If you are just introducing yourself to this great band, I suggest that you start with any of their previous releases: Vols. 1 through 3, or "Seed", their fourth CD. (My personal favorite is Vol. 2.) The bonus DVD is interesting, particularly the concert montage video.

4 out of 5 stars An amazing cd & dvd set.......2004-06-24

An excellent set of remixes with dvd extras from an absolutely superb group of musicians. Be sure to check into their albums -- Seed, Further in Time (aka Vol. 3), Release (2), & Sound Magic (1). You will not be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite recordings.......2005-10-01

This recording is sublime!!! This is a compilation of Anne Sofie von Otter's favorite pieces. She chose such diverse and lovely music. Her diction is incredible. Her expressive voice moved me to tears in "A dio Roma," by Monteverdi. Her Handelian arias were also wonderful. My favorites from this CD are: all of the German lieder pieces, "A dio Roma" (Monteverdi), "Un sapin isole' se dresse" (Lahore), "I'm a Stranger Here Myself" (Weill), "In quali eccessi...Mi tradi" (Mozart), and "Non piu mesta" (Rossini). She is such an amazing Lyric Mezzo soprano. I love her so much. I also reccomend the Mass in C minor with Anne Sofie von Otter and Kiri te Kanawa, Cosi fan tutte with Renee Fleming (Mozart), and Ariodante (Handel). I strongly advise anyone to purchase this recording!!!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful voice, beautiful music.......2005-09-10

Superior quality recording! Gorgeous vocal production and sound. Terrific choice of material. Top of the line recording.

4 out of 5 stars Anne Sofie von Otter- The Artist's Album.......2005-08-06

Some of the songs are a little too obscure for me, but I like her singing. However, I like Renee Fleming's singing better.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic CD collection of arias!!.......2005-01-06

Anne Sofie Von Otter's mezzo voice is amazing!! Her selections of Handel's Ariodante and Rossini's La Cenerentola were amazing!! This CD is amazing and if you're a huge fan of Von Otter, you should get this CD!!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing versatility and unparalleled emotion.......2004-02-09

OK, so I own almost everything she's done. I am particularly fond of songs/lieder and, having listened to a great number of both male and female song singers, I can find no singer in the same universe. The intelligence of her approach, the control of her vocal color and vibrato to match the notes and lyrics, the playfulness with which she approaches the music are without equal.
This is an interesting disc and I didn't buy it until recently since I already had a lot of it and prefer songs to arias. But it was quite a revelation. The Handel and Weill are wonderful. For something completely different, try the Delage "Lahore" Track 12. Eerie and beautiful.
If Track #11, Skogen Sover, doesn't make you cry you have no heart. It may be the most beautiful use of the human voice I've ever heard. Listen carefully to the way she changes vowel sounds in the word 'juninatt' throwing in the 'n' both times so you barely hear it and it doesn't disrupt the vowel color change. At the end, turn up the volume and listen to her fade out with no vibrato until she's barely audible, then add just a touch of vibrato as she finishes with the final 't' of 'juninatt'.
There may be better aria singers, with some voices better for some types of opera. But this woman's incredible versatility is well-reflected here and a delight to listen to. Even a Rossini at the end, gynmastics and all. Has there ever been a singer with a wider repertoire matched with such gorgeous emotion? Now, if we could only get the UK version of this disc, with more and different offerings, here on Amazon USA...
A great intro to this powerful, emotional singer. Take it as a starter and buy the full discs that have the tracks you like best. You'll be captivated and not disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great effort by all the Psychopathic artists.......2007-03-20

After being delayed for two years, "Tales From The Lotus Pod" was finally released in 2001, and was worth the wait. The beats are excellent and the concept is really wicked. Mike E. Clark produced half of the album before parting ways with Psychopathic, and it's a shame he left, because he was really capturing the sound that all of us envisioned for Dark Lotus. I reccomend picking up the original version as oppossed to the re-release, because Marz is much better than ABK.

5 out of 5 stars Freakin' Excellent !!!.......2006-07-21

This was an excellent cd. a lot deeper and darker than the ICP stuff. Also, out of the 2 versions availible, the original is better. To me, ABK just doesn't cut it. he's got a good style and all, it's just that he sounds like a rapping version of the nerd dude from Family Guy with his lisp and all. To me the best song on here is " And We Danced " followed by " Bitch, I'm Sexy ". This review is coming from a guy who definitely KNOWS music, as I listen to everything from Death/Gore Grind/Black Metal, to Rap/Hip Hop, etc/. So to the person who was obviously making fun of this release to get a reaction by calling this and saying " What is this, Dark Rap, Goth Rap, HAHAHAHA What a Load " I say.. I guess those who don't do tell how it should be done... Am I right ? There... you got your reaction... You're welcome :)

4 out of 5 stars ABK above marz.......2006-06-04

This album was a good album but personal I say if you want the Dark Lotus album tales from the lotus pod buy the revised. I feel ABK is far more a Juggalo then marz to take the quote straight from the album, Hey Marz you never were lotus and you know this BITCH!

4 out of 5 stars Enter the Lotus Pod.......2005-11-05

This album introduces us to the Lotus Pod, where the Children of the Lotus spin dark spiritual tales (i.e. Ali-Ba-Ba, cigaM kcalB, Headaches, I Wanna Die) as well as stories sexual pleasure (i.e. We Danced, Bitch I'm Sexy) and binding together as a family (i.e. Juggalo Family). The Lotus Family. The Juggalo Family. Dark Lotus consists of Insane Clown Posse, TWIZTID, Blaze Ya Dead Homie, and a newcomer known as Marz. Marz has proven to be a worthy and very talented sixth member of Dark Lotus. This album is a must have for any and every Juggalo. And for new Juggalos, this album is a terrific introduction to the world of the Lotus. Full of mystical legends, dark magic, pain, suffering, and sexual pleasure, the Children of the Lotus are wicked as ever and their story is like none other!

4 out of 5 stars Dark Lutus Debut: An Evil Edge.......2005-11-01

This album appeared with ex'memeber Marz, who i think is mad wicked, and then was re-made when ICP said goodbye to Marz and replaced him with ABK....Tracks:

1. Intro-1/5 Creepy Intro....about afterlife and cnoice......yea get it
2. Ali Baba-3.5/5 Yea its a cool track about mystic Egyptian-like wonders....only thing lacking is the chorus and beat....Monoxide and Madrox school this track
3. Something-4/5 A beat J used later in FF...but as a dark lotus track its a lot better.....simply cause i love everyones verses....
4. Hurt Myself-4.5/5 Great pounding rock beat.....the chick singing around the chorus is a little annoying tho....Again Monoxide polishes this track
5. Call Upon Your Gods-3/5 Beats eh.....ok..same for verses I like the switching off of members for the chorus....its an alright track...good subject
6. We Danced-5/5 Painfully Wicked! This is the wicked shxt I pay good money for....beats awesome....story is very demeted and joyfully graphic.....I love it
7. Black Magic-5/5 I really like the concept of this track.....few words mixed together in a scary beat to sound like a horrifying chant.....I piture a disturbing video to go along with this
8. Gimme Dat Blood-4.5/5 Now were on the vampiric side....still keeping the album on a hideous note....with good verses about thirst for blood.....J's verse is my favorite on this...
9. Headache-5/5 it just doesnt stop with the wicked shxt....this one goes more towards painful experiences......Chorus is very well done......
10. Bad Rep-2/5 Just dont really llke this track.....its a big change of pace about their reputation....the beat isnt real diggable....but its dark lotus so its worth listening to
11. Bitch I'm Sexy-5/5 Favorite Track on the album......Downright bitchhater song......Everyone is absolutely awesome on this track......Shaggy has a nice semi-singing part on this......Beat is on the same pace of them with the angry in your face style
12. Swarm-3.5/5 Monoxide isnt on here....still a decent track with a good beat and badass lyrics by Marz and J.....
13. I Wanna Die-3/5 More relaxing track.....I enjoy it for its lyrics and chorus.....bout all i enjoy inside this track
14. Black Crows-5/5 Back again to the wickedness......Beat is pretty good....Not much of a chorus, but the chant that is said goes well with the beat in the background.....
15. Juggalo Family-4/5 Another ending track landing on a good note about fan love.......chorus is something you would hear in all juggalos heads if you could read minds.......But its not one of my faves.....
16. Dot Com-1/5 just a shout out to websites.......

This album feels like the dark magic inside the tombs and cemetaries that we wouldnt dare exploring......Very Wicked....Excellent debut of a six man psychopathic group.....They arent around much....but when they return from hiding they bring storms...they are Dark Lotus-Sexton

Before San Diego-bred P.O.D. (Payable on Death) landed on a major label in 1998, they were successful indie recording artists. In fact, their Atlantic debut, 1999's Fundamental Elements of Southtown is actually the lineup's fifth album since forming in 1992. And Snuff the Punk was their debut, a heretofore out of print effort now rereleased, remastered and remixed, with new graphics as well. P.O.D. had a strong following in Christian music circles before crossing over with Southtown, and Snuff the Punk shows why. Vaguely progressive thrashy metal with lots of funky rhythms and major hardcore rap influences, the time changes and aggressive musicality of this raw CD, originally released in 1993, is timely in 2000 and beyond. And despite the many religious references, open-minded secular music fans should be able to listen and groove to the positive, heavy tunes that populate Snuff the Punk (the punk being the devil) without feeling preached to. Still, with blatant lyrics such as "abortion is murder," on the "hidden" final track, "Murder," it's very clear where the band is coming from. Snuff the Punk is a winner for Christian heavy music fans. But if you're not a religious type but can mosh to the speedy punk vibe of "Can You Feel It?" and embrace singer Sonny praising God in "Run" ("you're the one who rescued me"), then this debut is a secular success as well. --Katherine Turman

1994 EP captures the band in their formative stage, still honing their fairly wide-ranging rap-metal sound, but providing enough moments of raw power to satisfy fans. Unavailable domestically. Rescue Records.

4 out of 5 stars p.o.ds first.......2005-05-19

This is P.O.D.s first cd. After being a P.O.D. fan for a while, I realy wanted to try this album. I wasn't let down. Here is a song-by-song review.

Coming Back. This is a cool song with a cool begining. It talks about Jesus coming back.

Let The Music Do The Talking. A standout track with great rapping and cool tornadoe sirens in the background.

Draw The Line. The most popular song on the cd. Not my faverite, but it's still pretty good.

Who's Right? Another good song. It talks about Jesus not favering any race of people.

Get Strait. A fine track that talks about making Jesus Lord over you before he comes back.

Run. Fast rapping and cool bass. It starts out depressing but it ends happy. Check it out.

Snuff The Punk. P.O.D.S first recorded song and my faverite track on this cd. They tell us in this song to "snuff the punk". The punk is the Devil.

Can You Feel It. Not the best but is still worth listening to.

Three In The Power Of One. It talks about having the power to use Jesus' name to beat the Devil and his Demons. The hardest song on the cd.

Every Knee. A fine song with a cool rap part in the middle of the song. It talks about how everone will see that Jesus is king.

Abortion Is Murder. The begining isn'nt the real song. It realy begins a little after the begining. Just Listen to it and you'll see what I mean.

The most Christian cd P.O.D. has released. Somebody said that they curse in thier songs. Well, I rap to these song almost every day and I've yet to hear them curse. That's not to say they don't curse when they're not on stage. But if they do, it's not the end of the world. Nobody is perfect. Including Cristians. If you like P.O.D., try this cd.

3 out of 5 stars Sorry "A Music Fan".......2005-04-27

This CD is pretty good, but that's not what I really wanted to talk about. I hate to dissapoint you "A Music Fan," but the kid is right: P.O.D. do cuss, and I know that it isn't printed but trust me, they do. They have admitted to it in several interviews that I have watched, although they said that they didn't put it into the lyrics list because it wasn't actually part of the lyrics, just a quick background phrase. There are other bands that do this too (omit lyrics because they aren't the main focus of that portion of the song). I won't disagree with you on the Christian focus (because they are a Christian group), but I don't think that swearing should scare off Christian fans of POD. You have to be looking hard for the words to hear them, and it doesn't stand out. They are a good band, so don't let a little background swearing throw you off...it's not the end of the world.

2 out of 5 stars The truth..........2005-02-17

Just a correction to the correction. They do use foul words... "Of course we got the same view on life as most people out there - it's too short and most of the time it's quite a shi**y business." (Circus, July 2002, p.22)

Other instances of P.O.D.s profanity; "f---ing" (Guitar World, Nov. 2001, p. 54); "D--n it!" (Drum!, Sept.-Oct. 2001, p. 86); "p--s us off" (Drum!, Sept.-Oct. 2001, p. 87) "d--n " (Revolver, Nov/Dec 2001, p.63) "p--sed off" (AP, Nov. 2001, p. 59) "half a-sed" (Circus, July 2002 p. 22). And there are others.

This album is ok. Southtown was a bit better. If you like metal there's definitely better albums out there. Imo, this isn't really worth the money. And I don't care about the profanity.

5 out of 5 stars NOT A REVIEW, BUT A CORRECTION OF SOMEONE ELSE'S. . ........2004-04-02

I have been reading the reviews on this cd, because I am very interested in buying it. When I came across this one review that was mostly just a review of P.O.D. itself. Thr reviewer claimed that they had good music, but also implied that they used swear words in their music. I am here to defend them on that point. So, all you christian readers, pleeeasse don't be scared away. Because they DO NOT use any foul words. Just keep reading. . .

One point he made was that in the song 'What is Right', on the record 'Snuff the Punk', Sonny sings "Talking that (what?)". Know what the word was? TRASH. It wasn't anything dirty. It was TRASH. Trust me, I've listened very closely to the music clip.
And the reviewer also said that in 'Rock the Party' of 'The Fundamental Elements of Southtown', Sonny sings ". . .punk - (what?). . ." I own that album, and I've listened to that song many, many times. I've also read the lyrics inside the album pamphlet. They never even say the word 'punk'. To read the whole song, copied word for word from the pamphlet, go to the end of my 'review'.
Another questionable one that I've heard of was in the song 'Boom', on the album 'Satellite'. I own that cd, too. The verse supposedly goes, "I never knew that a kid like me could take his mic around the world and flash his big (a-word)."
Nope. It in fact goes "I never knew that a kid like me could take his mic around the world and flash the big S.D." I actually don't know what S.D. stands for (san diego, maybe, where they came from?).
P.O.D. has never once said a foul word in any of their songs. In fact, just the opposite. They always sing about chritian morals and themes, and even make many referances to 'Jah' and 'Father'. So please, don't let one confused reviewer scare you off from possibly some of the best music you will ever hear (with CLEAN lyrics).

"ROCK THE PARTY" (off the hook)

'We came here to rock this jam - spread HIS love is the master plan. Let this light ignite like a spark - everybody in the party knows who we are. You gotta' get down, dance around, floss your style - P.O.D., guarantee, make it worth your while. Bad vibes, leave 'em at the door - soulcheck'n, housewreck'n, keep 'em begging for more. WE CAME TO ROCK THE PARTY ALL NIGHT LONG - SO PARTY PEOPLE WON'T YA' SING THAT SONG. WE CAME TO ROCK THE PARTY ALL NIGHT LONG - AND KEEP IT LIVE 'TILL THE BREAK OF DAWN. Hey dj won't ya' play that song - and we'll keep dancin' 'till the break of dawn. Keep it live like the way it should - ain't nobody gettin' crazy so you know it's all good. B-boys, fly-girls one time - friend of yours is a friend of mine. Don't bother stopping 'till this jam is through - if you been here before than you know how we do. (MAIN CHORUS)
We gotz to say what we feel - then i can say came real. Don't wanna be caught messin' around - cuz a party ain't a party when it gets shut down (repeat: shut down, shut down). Off the hook with the cutz, that's right - feelin' loose cuz it sounds so tight. Rock da' spot 'till the very end - make sure that you're there when we do it again. (MAIN CHORUS)

4 out of 5 stars P.O.D.: not as polished as now; still brought the goods.......2003-12-22

This album is amazing. I find myself listening to it more and more these days, actually. Clearly, although their songwriting skills weren't as polished and perfected as they are today, as with the quality of the songs, P.O.D. still delivered the real, raw sound that can still be found in their music today.

Kicking off the album with "Coming Back" was great. One of my favorite songs on the album. Sonny repeatedly says, "He's coming back - he's coming back for me and you", then the track increases in tempo.

Other highlights of the album are "Run" {"You're the one who rescued me /...next time I run, I'm running straight to you"} which is about seeing no light in your world then discovering and accepting Jesus Christ in your life and realizing that things aren't that bad after all; and of course the title track, "Snuff The Punk", is sheerly awesome.

"Let The Music Do The Talking" lets the music simply do the talking, and it is also a powerful song.

P.O.D. seemed to have been more religiously blatant in their songs, {"Christ is king"} than they are now. Their music today is still extremely positive, but some of the lyrics are more universal and can be applied to more situations {"Every day is a new day, I'm thankful for every breath I take"}.

Do not hesitate to buy this album. You will find it very enlightening, captivating, and they're a multi-talented band with a lot going for them.

Album Description

Sound in Spirit represents another leap forward in power and purpose for Chanticleer. On this recording they explore the profound connection between sound and healing. The repertoire weaves together compositions ancient and contemporary, East and West, so the listeners hear familiar and unfamiliar sounds in equal proportions. The texts and sounds are inspired by many different cultures along with religious and musical traditions from Tibet, India, Japan, Africa, indigenous America and Byzantine Greece.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-03-09

As a college trombonist, with decidedly 20th century leanings in my own personal tastes, I found this recording absolutely spellbinding. Weird? Yes! Outside the box? You bet. Awesome harmonic overtone singing? Yes! One of my duties as a musician is to "improv" on jazz solos - they do some of that on this recording as well. This disc has it all. I love ancient sacred music as well (Chanticleers Magnificat disc is excellent as well), but sometimes one tires of the (even though it is beautiful)monotony - the complete tonality and predictability of the works. Sometimes I want some interesting ideas to pop up unexpectedly, something that makes you go "Wow, how did they do that!" Sometimes I want some atonality, some asymmetrical rythmns in my choral singing. It gives the moments of tonality and common time their "glow" for lack of a better word. This disc delivers on all fronts, and is, of course, impeccably sung. In my opinion, Sound in Spirit has a good mix of traditional and non traditional music although it's not something you would put on as back ground music at a dinner or going to sleep. The music forces you to put down what you are doing, and devote your full attention. I definately recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars So rich, so beautiful.......2006-07-08

I really can't understand why this Chanticleer recording in particular should garner such a comparatively large amount of negative reactions. I suppose some people simply have an insurmountable aversion to non-western and/or non-traditional musical ideas. Still, other Chanticleer albums (Colors of Love and Lamentations and Praises both come to mind) have forayed as much or more than Sound in Spirit into such music, and reactions to those tended more towards the positive. If you tend to prefer genre-specific Chanticleer (e.g. gospel, Christmas, early music), then Sound in Spirit may not (I repeat, MAY not) be for you. If, however, you respond equally to a wide range of sounds and styles, or if you enjoy contemporary/adventurous compositions, I cannot recommend this album enough.

Sound in Spirit is a richly evocative and endlessly rewarding musical journey, featuring compositions from diverse artists and genres. Some tracks include ambient outdoor recordings, percussion, or a guest vocalist or two. The liner notes indicate that this, more than any prior Chanticleer recording, is meant to be listened to all in one go, as a shimmering whole that transcends its disparate indvidual elements. Such cohesiveness in a musical release is a remarkable feat by any measure, but Chanticleer truly delivers. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A glorious song.......2006-03-08

Como pod'a groriosa, a 10 or 12 minute meditative song, track 7 of the album, is worth the entire price of the CD and more. It is a glorious piece of music that starts out with a lone voice, pleading to Mary for help for his lame daughter, then builds to an amazing crescendo as the daughter is healed and strides out into the world. You can hear the power return to the singer/singers, and it is easy to feel "healed" spiritually one's self, listening to it. I have shared this song with others and their response has been, universally, "Wow."

1 out of 5 stars I paid for this?.......2006-03-08

If I didn't lose the receipt I would have taken this one back.
I was shocked that what I was listening to was really the same Chanticleer on the Rensaissance records I have. I might have enjoyed this more back when I was dropping acid and eatting mushrooms.

4 out of 5 stars Champions of the new and adventuresome........2006-02-17

Chanticleer is most definitely this, and much more. I applaud them for always being willing to try something new and challenge listeners. This is one of the many things that makes them the premier ensemble that they are so well know to be. Certainly, this is not a disc for people who are looking for a non-challenging listen. But it still contains things that will delight such people, especially the magnificently sung Victoria motet. Jennings' Beata plainsong arrangement, Jackson Hill's "In Winter's Keeping", and Past Life Melodies in particular will surely delight almost anyone, especially those who are into "new age" or minimalist music.

The more you listen, the more you realize there is an astonishing amount of variety in this recording. Anyone who is a fan of Chanticleer's adventuresome excursions, incredible flexibility of vocal techniques, and flawless singing will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Drop dead gorgeous.......2005-07-04

Every now and then you get a CD come along where some really outstanding artist allows themself to just let their hair down for a moment. Of course it has to be done with aplomb and thorough good taste adding their unique touch of brilliance while sucessfully avoiding any hint of kitch. Russian Early Music pioneer Anatoly Grindenko here records songs from the time of Tsarist Russia. These are songs that transient political regimens would have tried to replace in the popular affection with political songs. Yet somehow these songs have survived in the hearts and affections of the Russian people and this peasant tradition of folk song that refused to die is presented with Grindenko's usual expertise and sung expertly with the utmost affection. In fact the songs were always sung by this choir for their own private fun but excluded from 'serious' concert performances. The quality of singing, as can be expected under Grindenko's expert choral direction, is superb througout. The end result is a lovely CD that can be highly recommended to anybody who just loves to listen to beautiful singing. After all the works of Tchaikovsky, Borodin and Stravinsky draw heavily on Russian folk song as a rich source of thematic material but any serious music lover would enjoy this CD just as much with its range of songs ranging from boisterous to charming to melancholy. Opus 111, as usual, provide expertly engineered sound to match. The end result is a drop dead gorgeous CD that will delight anyone lucky enough to discover this secret gem.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant !.......2001-12-26

This recording is a fantastic example of the russian choral tradition. Wonderful selections sung with obvious passion .The rousing patriotic tunes will make you want to march to the front, the romantic ballads will make you wish you never left and the songs of hearth and homeland will make you inch closer to your loved ones. If you have a passion for things "russian" this one just might keep you occupied for a while.
