The Benin-born, Paris-based singer Angélique Kidjo has become the most popular African female artist on the world-music scene. This compilation contains 18 tracks from her five CDs released between 1990 and 1998. An electrifying performer fluent in French, English-jazz vocalese, and her country's traditional zilin vocal techniques, Kidjo often sings in her native Fon/Yoruba language. Along with her husband, bassist/producer Jean Hebral, Kidjo conjures up a zesty mix of funk, Latin, jazz, gospel, Caribbean zouk, Congolese rumba, and Afropop grooves. Kidjo covers a lot of ground--from Afro-pulsed renditions of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" to her indigenous take on George Gershwin's "Summertime." The rising hip-hop/gospel diva Kelly Price lends her sanctified sound to "Open Your Eyes," and Carlos Santana's bluesy guitar lines illuminate "Naima." The Tanzanian chant "Malaika" is dedicated to Kidjo's idol, Miriam Makeba, while "Senie," a spare track with background vocals and drums, is a shout out to the great Togolese singer Bella Bellow. Of course, this collection also contains Kidjo's most popular dance hits, including the infectious "Batonga," "Agolo," and the classic "Aye." This fabulous package shows why Kidjo is the belle of the world-music ball, with a host of fans from Cassandra Wilson to Branford Marsalis. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Blend of Africa, Europe, and America.......2006-03-01

Angelique Kidjo's music is a blend of African (where she was born), European (where she lives) and America (where she draws much inspiration). Don't waste too much time trying to categorize it - just enjoy it as it is excellent. Her cover of "Little Wing" very interesting and her own compositions are good. The beat is so good that you don't mind if you don't understand the language of many songs.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the best.......2005-08-15

If you are new to Angelique Kidjo then this is the best introduction to her range and power, spanning the wide spectrum of her styles from her African roots to more European/American influences. If you are new to African music, this is an easy introduction, and if you have other of her albums you'll want to add this.

My only complaint - it was released before Black Ivory Soul, so doesn't include her more Brazilian music, which I love. Her voice is astonishing, her talent unique. I was lucky enough to see her live in Santa Cruz California a couple of years back and she could have filled the auditorium with her voice alone, without the aid of a microphone. She is one of those rare people who truly can sing astonishingly well. She blew me away.

5 out of 5 stars Rare CD for Lakeside fans........2006-08-16

After searching for some years, this CD is the only place I could find one of my favorite LAKESIDE songs "Keep on moving straight ahead".

5 out of 5 stars Keeping It Moving In The Right Direction.......2004-11-24

Lakeside started out as Solar Records attempt at a house band for the label and released their debut in 1978.By the time of 'Keep On Moving Straight Ahead' the band had (finaly) learned how to strech their sophisticated keyboard R&B/funk into an entire quality album. Two of these songs;"It's Got To Be Love" and "All For You" are absolute Lakeside classics and shouldv'e been the massive pop chart breakthrough this band deserved. And for sure the title track,"It's You","We Want You On The Floor" and "Back Together Again" are trademark Lakeside funk tunes, albeit alot more melodic and song-oriented then usual, getting away from the rhythmic,horn-spiked jam sound that had become something of a funk clishe in the late 1970's.While 'Fantastic Voyage' was surely a step in the right direction, this album only extends on the theme and showcases Lakeside's ability to create memorable and melodic song ideas.A fine example of early 1980s funk.

This cd has to be one of my favorites by this electric group. Lakeside has so many cd's it's hard to pick, but this is a favorite of mine.

Wounded Bird Records. 2002.

      5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2005-07-28

Being a musician since the sixties with a nod towards jazz, blues, funk, etc etc.. this album had a huge impact on me and every other musician immersed in same genre directions. It still holds up today. Any B,S & T, Dreams &/or Chicago fans out there that were missing the "blues" element and a whole lotta soul.. check this album out!!
      It kicks ass!

4 out of 5 stars Butterfield was always moving........2005-07-13

If you listen to every CD or album available from Paul Butterfield, you will note a parallel to John Mayall (who also needed Room to Move): they changed styles, people, moods. And yet, the identity is never really lost, no matter who might be showcased from one song or CD to the next.

This was a double album when I bought it in the early '70s. I personally didn't care for it too much and considered it one of the lower points of Butterfield's career. That does not mean there are not some great songs on it, and some wonderful performances.

Nothing really tops the "East-West" CD, but my own personal quirks put "In My Own Dream" up there at number 2, then "Pigboy Crabshaw", then the eponymous first album, then the two Better Days releases.

This CD would follow those. "Put It In Your Ear" would rank dead last (pun sorrowfully intended). There are a few live releases I don't know yet. So why the 4 stars? Damn, if you have to ask that, you're not a Butterfield fan. Everything else that I listed before it gets a 5, and I wish there was room for 6 stars on the first two.

But that's just me. If you want to hear gems mixed with a bit of silliness and you already like the other pieces mentioned, it's a no-brainer. Guess I have to scan my album to submit a picture of the cover!

5 out of 5 stars My favourite album, Love disease my alltime favourite song!.......2005-04-02

I bought this Lp in 1973 and I from that moment on I was a big fan of the Paul B.B.B. The first time I heard P.B. was on the 3 double Woodstock albums and I have to admit that I was not impressed with the Love March, the only weak song on the K.o.M.album. But the other songs are great especially Love Disease, but also So far so good, No amount of loving, Where did my baby go and last but no least Walking by myself with a great guitar solo of Buzzy Feiten. The Woodstock line up is also my favourite. I know that this album was not received very well by the press and the buyers, but I never understand that. I think because I am more a Paul B. fan than a Mike B. fan. And also the Live double cd contains 7 songs of the Keep on Moving album ,so it can't be all that bad.

3 out of 5 stars Anoter Wounded Bird Release!.......2002-07-23

The CD "Keep Moving On" was originally released on the Wounded Bird label in 1969 and, like "In My Own Dream" has been re-released without remastering in 2002. In just one year since the band's last recording, it was beginning the first of many personnel changes that would follow. Fred Beckmeier and Rod Hicks replaced Bugsy Maugh on the bass, Howard Buzzy Feiten replaced Elvin Bishop on guitar, the piano of Ted Harris and Jerry Ragovoy replaced Al Kooper's organ and Steve Madaio replaced Keith Johnson on the trumpet. The only members to remain in the band in addition to Paul Butterfield were Brother Gene Dinwiddie on various instruments, Keith Johnson on trumpet, David Sanborn on sax and Phillip Wilson on drums. These changes resulted in a larger and fuller sounding brass section and a de-emphasis on the guitar solos made prominent by Elvin Bishop. All that would change later with the addition of Mike Bloomfield. The CD opens with a rather silly number called "Love March". How Butterfield ever thought should be included is a mystery but I guess that was the 60's. Another noticeable change is that rather than alternating the vocal duties between four different band members, the vocals are largely carried by either Rod Hicks of Paul Butterfield. As such, the band was starting to form an identity with listeners. The result is a step above "In My Own Dream" but the disc still doesn't match up to "East-West", "An Anthology-The Elektra Years" or even, "The Resurrection of Pigboy Crabshaw".

          Album Description

The legendary ESG return with their first new album in nearly five years on Soul Jazz Records. The new album features their trademark stripped down punk/funk style that has spawned a whole generation of fans and bands thirty years on from their first release, "Moody" EP on Factory Records (and the infamous 99 Records in America). First produced by Martin Hannett, ESG were instantly accepted into the worlds of punk/new wave, hip-hop and dance music - a unique position which still holds true today. Courted by the punk/new wave community they played with groups such as The Clash, A Certain Ratio, Public Image, Gang of Four. Through 99 Records in New York, they also became associated with the No Wave groups such as label-mates Liquid Liquid and others such as Mars, DNA, James Chance and The Contortions. The amazing history of ESG begins in the South Bronx where they grew up in the tenements. Four sisters, Renee, Valerie, Marie and Deborah Scroggins, encouraged by their mother, began playing music together as teenagers as a way to keep themselves out of trouble with neighbourhood gang life. Soul Jazz Records. 2006.
