Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Future Past Tense is a CD collection documenting the best remixes by Q-Burns Abstract Message. Stretching back from 1998's remix of Rabbit In The Moon's "Floor.i.da" to recent re-workings for Fila Brazilia and Lovesky these tracks give an entertaining overview of the variety and ingenuity, of Michael "Q-Burns" Donaldson's work. A re-rub of Beef Wellington's "Dedication" sounds like a future James Brown while the following mix of Mazi & Colette's "Do You Want Me" is pure squelchy funk house joy. This diversity is present throughout the length of the disc, but the whole flows together linked by the playfulness and uniqueness of Q-Burns' production.

Almost all of the tracks on Future Past Tense have been previously only available on limited vinyl releases and a few are even rarer. Before now, the Latin-flavored remix of Tetris' "Two Hours" could only be found on the Russian release of their full album. The ultra-deep house mix of Rabbit In The Moon's "Floor.i.da" is a completely different version than the one that appeared on the Hallucination 12" single. And the gorgeous Naked Music-like rework of Neon Heights' "Hometown Blue" is completely exclusive to this release.

Standing alone as a Q-Burns Abstract Message album or a cohesive collection of brilliant artists remixed, Future Past Tense is undeniably a fascinating listen that fans of electronic dance music everywhere will enjoy. Future Past Tense also gives a glimpse into the developing sound of one of the USA's most popular and eclectic electronic dance producers and DJs.

4 out of 5 stars You know, this is pretty good stuff . . ........2001-05-20

We don't like to pigeonhole bands by uncomfortably lodging them into the sometimes imaginary overlap between well-known artists, but let's face it- it helps the unfamiliar prospective buyer. If we have to do it to poor unsuspecting Juno, on this release, I'd have to say that Mogwai (and hence Slint) is definitely a reference, as is Jawbox. But thankfully, this album is much more than a heavily-amped indie rock all-star hybrid, and it builds nicely on the excellent THIS IS THE WAY IT GOES . . . A FUTURE LIVED IN PAST TENSE is a true epic of ebbing and flowing guitar, from hypnotic hymns to maelstroms and minefields of guitar. And the sound is simply breathtaking. The layed squalls of guitar take on the richest, deepest, crimson tones- it defies description. The songwriting isn't exactly classic, but the sound is so good that the compositions are extremely effective, regardless. The songwriting is by no means shabby, either. This one's a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars more than perfect.......2001-05-16

I've bought very few CD's since Juno's last release "This is the Way it Goes and Goes..." (and their split release). Reason being is there's too much crap released these days that my nine year old nephew could do a better job at. This music is intricate, stimulating, and very powerful. After listening to this CD you really see the blandness and subpar cookie cutter rock out there these days that is total senseless crap. These guys are awesome, creative musicians, and they use their three guitar assault very effectivly, not overbearing, just incredibly creative. Enough said, I give this album 6 stars.

5 out of 5 stars the sound of depth.......2001-05-11

I will not bore innocent readers with song-by-song reports or boring comparisons to other irrelevant bands. Juno's _a future lived in past tense_ is its own genre. This is an amazing, awe-inspiring album, from the synth organ in the opening seconds to the voice of the answering machine on the final track. To call it cohesive would be bland; to describe it as competent would be understatement. This is music, the way it should be, and Juno is an emotional and ambient explosion of melodious bliss.

4 out of 5 stars Skillful, eclectic stuff.......2005-05-25

Q-Burns Abstract Message has been a mover and shaker in American electronic music for over 10 years. His DJ sets are known for their diversity and high funk factor, and his production reflects a similar ethic. "Future Past Tense" is a collection of his remixes for other artists, and while the artists and remixes vary wildly, high quality runs throughout. From the Compost-approved organic vibes of "Dedication" to the Prince-on-Mars funk of "We Build Arks," the remixes showcase a strong sense of melody, groove, and musical depth. The throwaway vocal house of "Do You Want Me" is the only clunker; otherwise, each remix is a mini-journey full of invention and playfulness.

    5 out of 5 stars Worth a second listen.......2005-09-23

Like the other reviewer, the first time I listened to this album I was distracted by Magne's voice. As a die-hard a-ha fan (that's why I bought this in the first place) I obviously appreciate pretty vocals and this album hasn't got them. What I appreciate even more, however, are well written lyrics that combine both meaning and a clever use of language (think literature like Nabokov). That's what I think this album is all about. You could read it like a book or poem. To be honest, a glossier sound would distract you from the content. This has become one of my favorite albums of the year (along with Loretta Lynn's Van Lear Rose).

1 out of 5 stars There's a reason why Magne is not the lead signer of A-ha.......2005-06-07

Interestingly, if you listen to Morten Harket's 95 English solo album, the albums by Paul Waaktaar's band Savoy, and this one you'll notice that each member of A-ha opted for a more stripped down sound in their work outside of the group.

The song writing on Magne Furuholmen's debut is fairly good. It features mostly acoustic guitar and piano, played by himself. The album has a very simple and intimate feel. There are two bright spots, the single 'Kryptonite' and '2CU Shine'.

The major downside that tarnishes the album and makes it very difficult to listen to is the fact that Magne also does all the vocals. He somewhat sounds like the guy from Radiohead, but not quite as solid. There's a good reason why Magne doesn't do vocals for A-ha. He's not half the singer that Waaktaar is, who in turn is not quite as good as Harket.

I imported this CD from the UK only because I was already getting something else from there (Wetton-Downes Icon - a very good CD) so I thought it was worth getting 2 CDs since the shipping wouldn't cost much extra.

However, after a few listens I've made up my mind to send it back. My advice, get the Savoy albums (if you can find them, I only have the first 3 which I got in Japan) and/or Harket's 'Wild Seed' and skip this one.

Save your money for the new A-ha album coming out Fall 2005.
