5 out of 5 stars all time favorite.......2005-07-23

This has been one of my favorite CD's for nearly a decade now! It is great. I had the first DSC CD and had listened to it over and over and over (LOVE IT) and bought this one as soon as it came out. I have given both DSC CD's as gifts to many people over the years and everyone loves them. Why, oh why, don't they make another CD or two or three or .....
      A fantastic group!

5 out of 5 stars Contemporary folk features ex Dixie Chick.......2003-08-07

To those who only know the Dixie Chicks from their popular albums, it may come as a surprise that they already had a fair bit of history before that, including three albums that were very different from their later music. The first two of those albums had a line up that featured the excellent Robin Lynn Macy. I have not heard the first of those albums, but I enjoy the second, Little ol' cowgirl. It is a strange but interesting mix of country and folk music and it is clear in retrospect that there was tension in the group back then. Robin was more interested in folk than country and she was more prominent on the folksy tracks. She quit the Dixie Chicks and left the music business briefly, but was persuaded to join up with Sara Hickman and Patty Lege to form the Domestic Science Club.

This is the second of two albums by the Domestic Science Club and it seems unlikely that there will be any more. Apart from singing, the ladies also play guitars (electric and acoustic). Chris Searles played drums and percussion, while either Drew Garrett or Jeff Haley played bass - these were the only additional musicians used on the album. With a generous sixteen tracks, you certainly get good value. The best-known song here is the final track, a cover of What a little moonlight can do, by far the oldest song here. None of the songs are well known, though Jean Ritchie fans will recognize Blue diamond mines.

Dixie Chicks fans who must have everything that has any connection will buy this anyway, but should not expect it sound like anything they did even when Robin was in the group. Really, this is an interesting contemporary folk album and should be appreciated on that basis.

      5 out of 5 stars Deserves a Grammy.......2000-02-23

After buying and listening to almost every album nominated for a Grammy this year and last year, I could not find one that compares to this album for a combination of clever, lyrical and melodic music making. These singers are wonderful and I pray they will make more CDs. So far, I've seen only two Domestic Science Club CDs, and both are great -- the kind you can share with a wide range of friends and play over and over. I also have bought Sara Hickman's CDs, which are very original, but I think she is better as part of the DSC group. If you like the Dixie Chicks, try Domestic Science Club.

5 out of 5 stars Great combination of beauty, talent, humor, and orginality........1999-09-07

Robin's (formerly with The Dixie Chicks) lyrics, Sara's haunting refrains and Patti's sweet harmony can't be beat. These ladies are easy on both the eyes and the ears.

5 out of 5 stars Melody and harmonizing with witty lyrics.......1998-12-17

Great CD! After hearing these three ladies harmonize on public radio, I haunted the music stores to find both their CDs. The music is really fun and definitely woman-friendly. Great singing without a lot of studio tricks. One song, Calm of Your Heart, moves me every time I hear it.

      5 out of 5 stars Hidden Tracks..........2005-04-13

I bought this recently to update it from my tape collection so I was well aware of what I was buying, and eager to pop it into my computer and to hear the brilliant melodies of cleverly hidden sexual innuendo. (I adore clever lyrics in my music.) That's when I saw the two hidden tracks:

The first is Track 7, (Embrace You) Like The Wind - or this is my best guess at a title because, unlike the tape, there is no lyric sheet. Truly the bonus tracks are hidden as Windows identifies Track 7 as Tenderness Place (at 4:40!)

Well, it's not. Track 7 follows Kayaking.

(Embrace You) Like The Wind is a nice twangy, guitar ballad that captures the breezy backing harmonies these three ladies display throughout the whole album. The subject matter of this song is more sentimental than the tongue in cheek Kayaking or the tasty, sticky warmth of Sweet Tooth but this is just fine. Tenderness Place follows this track (at 1:39), which makes a palatable complement to the ladies' exhibition of well-endowed harmonies ever upfront in that little argyle number.

Track 10 is a delightful rendition of Winter Wonderland (2:30). This one makes it onto R.A.'s MP3 CD for Christmas music. I am sure I will be sick of it by the time the New Year arrives but, until then, it is a wonderful, light rendering of this song owned by Bing Crosby's throaty, velvet tone, IMHO.

The liner notes are skint, lacking the lyrics provided on the accordion style wrap of the tape version. However, I have uploaded the image added to the CD version of this album, visually underscoring the playfulness that lives on this recording in overabundance - something evoked from this offering that needs only one listen to confirm.

      Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Made Especially For You By Domestic Science Club.......2006-02-05

Too bad there are no more Domestic Science Club albums being made. This is a great record. You'll be toe-tapping and smiling to the wonderful harmonies and music. "Kayaking" will have you laughing out loud.

      5 out of 5 stars Wholesome & Melodic.......2005-10-31

The Domestic Science Club (DSC) is a refreshing group putting vocals and harmony back where they belong - not competing with the instruments which are otherwise orchestrated to drown out the voices and lyrics of marginally talented artists.

The DSC style is soothing and romantic, sometimes with a bit of country swing, but I travel back in time whenever I listen. Their music holds close old values of love and romance while cherishing the simple joys of life, family, and homemaking.

Their style may not be highly marketed as other singers, but the DSC fills a gap in the music industry that has been wholly ignored - making me long for an era of innocence and simplicity. It would do well to publish more music as melodic and wholesome as this group.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the Dixie Chicks ?!.......2003-12-19

To tell the truth, I buy the Dixie Chicks CDs mainly because there are no new Domestic Science Club CDs. The two CDs out there are delightful, with tunes ranging from country/blue grass style to funny to romantic. The lyrics and harmonies are wonderful and very singable if you like to follow along while driving the car. I've had to buy multiple versions of both CDs because people keep taking my copies! This CD's only flaw is that it is shorter than the other.

5 out of 5 stars Let me tell you first hand...........2003-06-27

This album is one of those that whenever you listen to it, it just makes you happy! The songs are fun and light and funny. Sara Hickman is an amazing songwriter with a wonderful sense of humor and a style that is all her own. If I had to pick a favorite song,I think it would be "Sweet Tooth"-only because that is the song that got me hooked on these girls. "Secrets of Love", "Peaches and Cream", and "Kayaking" will make you smile so be sure to listen to the lyrics. The combination of Patty Lege,Robin Macy, and Sara Hickman is so special. I can't believe they are still such a secret!
