5 out of 5 stars AIR fans, this is Planet funk, a upgraded Version!.......2004-06-07

Italian band Planet funk is another dance band infleunted by many artists and genre's, Depeche Mode, Pink Floyd for example on the rock side but also Chicane, Air, Chemical Bros and Daft Punk on the Dance side. The majority of songs are pretty slow here, the hit single's "Chase the Sun" and "Inside all the people" that had some attention a few years ago are great. "Chase the Sun" is a mid tempo dance influented song with female vocals and a beautiful melody while "Inside all the people" has male vocals, it's a mix of rock and dance. It's beautiful midtempo aswell, with a good hook. I heard a very good house version of it, when i re-heard the original version i had loads of memories and liked it even more. "The Switch" is simular. Lots of synths sound kind of like early Depeche Mode and then the soft vocals from the singer. "Where is the max" also has a beautiful sound, it's instrumental apart from the others. "Under the Rain" has dance sound with female vocals, reminds me abit of Chicane or Delerium. The sound of the rain they make is great too. "All Mans Land" is simular, also female vocals and a dreamy ambient sound. "Paraffin" and "Who said" are 2 more songs sung by the male simular to "the switch" but a bit weaker The rest are instrumental "Piano Piano" sais it all and "Tightrope Artist" is slow with drums. "The Walz" reminds me of Robert Miles/BT dreamtrance.

I see i'm the first one to review this, hopefully not the last. Planet Funk is defenitely something you should check out, i think many of you would like their sound.

5 out of 5 stars Italian Funk - who'd have thought it could sound so good ?.......2006-08-23

Bought this CD on the strength of "Chase the Sun" and couldn't stop playing it. Still can't: it sounds as fresh today as when first played ! It's one of those rare albums that doesn't contain a dud track, alternating between bass-heavy power-funk dance tunes and multi-textured trip-hop. Crank that volume dial up to eleven and soak it up.

Fave tracks include "Chase the Sun", "The Switch", "Who Said" and "Under the Rain" (love Sally Doherty's dreamy vocals on this one).

Be sure to give this Italian group's follow-up album "The Illogical Consequence" a listen ... a bit more experimental and not quite as flat-out power-funky, but just as good as NZS.

5 out of 5 stars a blast from start to finish.......2005-01-04

I picked this cd up after I had bought the single for "Stuck in the UK" at a virgin records, while i was living down under. I LOVED it from the first melting beat, to the last synth reverbing (is that even a word?? :P) inside my head. Not in a long time has an album snuck its way into my life so easily.
Everytime I listen to this I am taken back, it's like it was able to match my life so well.
I digress, i'm off track here, most people could care less what the album ment to me. Ok, i'll try to describe it.
Most of the music, is underscored with some funky beats, and the overlaying feel to the music is chilled out funk. Its like house and chill all wrapped up into one. From the single "Stuck in the UK" which hooked me, you would never think that the rest of the tracks could be so smooth and silky. The songs are layerd with some amazing vocals. It's the perfect cd for just relaxing alone, or dancing by yourself, and there is even a party feel as well
It's one of my favs, along with Goldfrapp and Fischerspooner (there is a SLIGHT elecrto feel to it).

Although I have been waiting for this album for about a year now, it has not been a disapointment! On the contrary, the sound propagated by these Italian fellows is what I class as a triumph! Really refreshing, catchy and haunting, perfect for morning listening and hopping around before you go to work. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2003-02-08

Since I haven't been to Europe in a while and I live in the US, I must have been the last person to hear about this band. Even though the songs were [apparently] popular a year or two ago, I find myself listening to the CD at least once a day. This is one of the rare albums in which EVERY track is great. I hope their next release receives worldwide recognition.

4 out of 5 stars Deserves an international release.......2002-10-16

'Chase the Sun' was a huge hit all over Europe a couple of years ago and when PF followed it up with the brilliant 'Inside All the People' (one of the best pop songs of 2001, with great vocals by Dan Black and an iconic video) I was really looking forward to the release of this album. Big disappointment therefore that it hasn't had a US or UK release. (Another case of record company chickenism...)

Having finally got hold of it I can confirm it's worth the few extra import dollars. If you like Chase the Sun, you've got more of Sally Doherty's vocals on tracks like 'Under the Rain' as well as some very danceable electro on 'The Switch', 'Tightrope Artist', 'Who Said' and the track they did for Simple Minds, 'Where is the Max'. So far I've noticed the influence of Thomas Dolby, Kent, Radiohead, Dubstar, Bill Nelson and Senser. Intriguing mix!

I've been mean and given it 4 stars but it's the most listened to of my recent CD purchases so go buy...

4 out of 5 stars At last, Planet Funk's debut album is here.......2002-10-05

Planet Funk's biggest hit was Chase The Sun from 2000. Last year, Inside All The People was a modest hit single too. This year saw the release of Non Zero Sumness, their debut CD. This CD is great, it starts with Where Is The Max, which actually is the same as One Step Closer, the song Planet Funk wrote for Simple Minds' new CD Cry. This is an instrumental version, a great track in my opinion. Track 2 is Chase The Sun, a pleasant and positive club tune, which could have lasted for a couple of minutes more. 3 and 4 is All Mans Land and The Switch, especially 3 is a classic Planet Funk tune with great melody and rhythm. The Switch is also out as a single.

5 is Inside All The People, a song that gave me goose bumps when I saw it on MTV with that great video. Great melody, great vocals. 6 is Under The Rain, one of the absolute best tracks on the album, great female vocals, reminded me a bit of Opus III's first album Mind Fruit. Charles Burchill of Simple Minds plays guitar on this one. 7 is Paraffin, also a good track with a more rocky sound. 8 is Piano Piano, a short one, kind of special and quirky. 9 is Tightrope Artist, I don't like the crazy male vocals on this one, but the melody of the tune keeps the song floating. 10 is Who Said, the only track on the CD that I don't like at all - here Planet Funk tries to sound like Apollo 440 with some quite stupid and annoying lyrics. The last track is The Waltz, and it actually starts like an electronic waltz, really cool, but then the vocals enters and the tune loses a bit of its originality, sounds a bit like Way Out West. After a minute of silence, the music starts up again with some quite uninteresting trance/rave/dancefloor-music.

All in all, Non Zero Sumness is a great CD, although it does fall a bit in quality on the last part of the disc, but that's a quite famous problem in the world of music! Most of the tracks are good, although none of them gave me the feeling of complete bliss, like I did when I heard Inside All The People firstly.

What is great about this italian band is that they manage to mix the electronic and vibrant DJ-sound with great use of guitars, basses and vocals, and often with the melody at the centre, although I could have wanted a couple more instrumental tracks.

I paid an enormously high price as an import when I ordered this CD from Amazon, I totally don't understand why it's so expensive and hard to get, after all it has several hit singles on it! The distribution company (italian?) must do a bad job on this one.

Mail me at [e-mail] if you want to discuss Planet Funk further. Their web page [web page](as printed on the cover) is actually a fake address!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2002-10-04

I first stumbled upon Planet Funk while traveling in Europe during the fall of 2001. "Inside All The People" was all over the radio and MTV while I was in Florence, Italy. I immediately fell in love with the smooth electronic rhythm and catchy chorus ("Feeling kinda lonely..."). I tried to find the CD when I was in Switzerland, but found that the group was basically unknown outside of Italy. I later purchased this album and two singles from Amazon and absolutely love them!

The music has a lot of electronic synthpop influence mixed with contemporary beats and house flavor. It's the kind of music you may find on a Crystal Method CD, except that it's less repetitive and features stunning vocals.

This CD definitely has a lot of listenability. I listen to it a lot while I'm driving. Favorite songs include: Inside All The People, The Switch, Paraffin, Who Said... (okay, they're all great!)
