4 out of 5 stars Very pleased.......2007-06-10

I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this CD. True, I could have listened on line before buying but that would have taken the fun out of the purchase. Besides, I really didn't care for the CD the first couple of times I listened but now I really love it. It's not something to listen to all the time but given the right circumstances e.g. a small gathering of friends, it's perfect. If I'd listened to online, I wouldn't have purchased it.

5 out of 5 stars Sumptuous and mellow.......2002-11-28

The six men of the King's Singers present sweet and light-hearted madrigals of such English composers as Morley, Weelkes, Dowland, Wilbye and Byrd. The thirty five selections include "Now is the Month of Maying", "Though Philomela Lost Her Love", "Sing We and Chant It," the celebration of tobacco entitled "Come, Sirrah Jack, Ho!" and a host of other fa-la-la-la-la venues interspersed with wistful laments. I love the rich, sonorous sound of a male vocal ensemble, with countertenors, tenor, baritones and bass, and these six singers do a great job. Occasional instrumental accompaniments by lute and tabor are included, but this group doesn't really need it--I could listen to them for hours all by themselves. Also quite enjoyable, as well as educational, is their earlier release, "The King's Singers' Madrigal History Tour: Italy, England, France, Spain and Germany". For a more risque' take on the vocal music of Renaissance England, you might get a kick out of "The Art of the Bawdy Song" by the Baltimore Consort with the Merry Companions.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Collections of English Madrigals.......2002-03-27

Any fan of the King's Singers will regret not having this album in their collection.

This album offers a veritable feast of the choicest English madrigals found on any comparable album. From the obligatory "Now is the Month of Maying" and "Fair Phyllis" to the more obscure "Tan ta ra, cries Mars," there is certainly enough on this album to bring a smile to lovers of Renaissance music - and a spark of recognition to anyone who sang traditional madrigals in high school or university. For serious students of early music, this album comes very highly recommended.

Among the more sonorous offerings on this album, Jones' "Farewell, Dear Love" and Dowland's "Come Again," cannot be ignored. Nor can Bennet's immortal "Weep O mine eyes" be matched more musically than here by the King's Singers.

This album has been played again and again for almost 6 years as both serious listening and background working music. And it has yet to lose its delight.

4 out of 5 stars A Delightful Collection of English Madrigal.......2000-08-16

With 35 tracts to enjoy you're sure to find a couple of favorites. I gave this CD 4 of 5 stars compared to 5 stars for the King's Singers World Madrigal Tour CD. If you prefer all your songs in English, this will be your 5 star CD. Tract 32 "Come again" is my favorite due to the surperb tenor lead and melodic development. Compared to many polyphonic early music styles (1300s-1485), this era (1500-1610) provides many memorable melodies.

4 out of 5 stars A wide variety.......2000-04-28

This is an excellent sampling of English madrigals. This presentation, given by an older roster of the Singers, is a nice introduction to the world of the madrigal, and English madrigals in particular.

5 out of 5 stars Special recording- Best to Date!.......2005-02-24

The Necks from Australia are kind of the underground band out there in the new music (jazz) scene. The Necks are noted to make mostly 60 minute one song CD's.

Aether is a wonderful 'moment in time'. I hear Jade Warrior's magic (Island Years), Medeski, Martin and Wood (Tonic) and some of the best ECM sounds when that label transformed for a brief time towards a new age leaning sound (Soltice, Towner, Oregon -Vangaurd).

It is a music groups' masterpiece. The musicians 'hear' each other and follow the airy and building mood from beginning to the end of the piece. I normally don't get into too much really mellow sounding stuff, but Aether is just an exceptional record. I can't get enough of it. Exquisite spin!

5 out of 5 stars Geologic music?.......2004-08-07

This album is my first and only exposure so far to the music of this Australian trio. As you can see this recording, named for the firmament yet carved into the grain of wood, contains a single track that clocks in at 63 minutes. While this may sound like tedium to some, it rewards the listener who allows for a different conception of time in music. But unlike ambient music's flat-line of dynamic, there is progression and tension in Aether.

The composition is basically formed around a cycle of chords that, to start, are very separated-20 seconds peak-to-peak-and gradually move closer together while adding more instrumental color (organ, electric piano, electric bass, arco bass, bells, tumba) around the core of acoustic bass, cymbals, and piano. The opening chord itself gorgeously plunges you into the cycle and the evolution begins; at the end, you can't believe how you arrived there.

Obvious comparisons can be made to Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Can, Fela Kuti, Basinski's Disintegration Loops, and many others but it must be said that The Necks are plying their own sound. There is perhaps a reflection of the Australian landscape-the vast stretches of land, island isolation-seen in the long-form that their music prefers. Indeed, I listened to Aether while driving across Idaho on Highway 20 and found it an ideal companion.

5 out of 5 stars "Hanging Gardens" - a great masterpiece.......2004-08-08

I first heard this song on a radio network on a long haul flight a few years ago, and it was the perfect piece to listen to when you're sitting upright for ten hours in coach on an airplane. The soothing, evoking sounds produced by the interesting organs, quiet yet intense drum playing, and mysterious bass plucking was enough to make me buy this album after I got off the flight. It is great to fall asleep to, and this is what I would call "space - jazz", although I think the genre is jazz fusion. One critic described the hour-long piece to sound "as if the universe's plumbing is shuddering into gear". When the piano kicks in with the chord riffs, it is as if you're in a dream world with the tranquilizing percussion. What is great about this piece is that it so cleverly written; it is basically just a few bars of music that evolve into something unworldly, and it just keeps evolving into new sounds, and comes back to stuff played early in the song. Although the price may seem a bit high, it is definitely worth it, and I have listened to this album a million times. I am surprised that the CD still works properly! This is the only album I have of The Necks, and I don't really think I would need anymore. Definitely one of the greatest works I have ever listened to, especially in the jazz genre.

4 out of 5 stars One Song CD?!?.......2002-05-09

Yes, even though this Cd only sports one track, it is well worth the money. The Necks are a nice trio including keyboard, percussion and bass and have a sound that you've never heard. It is different, but catchy at the same time and I think MMW fans would eat this up.

Album Description

The Necks' first album was released in 1989 in Australia and in 1996 on the label Private Music in the U.S. Right from the start, all the elements of the group's sound were firmly in place. The difference between Sex and the many other CDs they would record afterwards is the purity: The trio's hypnotic repetitive piece relies only on piano, bass, and drums; no electronics, extra keyboards, samples, or lengthy introduction. We would have to wait for Piano Bass Drums nine years later before they would come back to these essentials. Apart from the instrumentation, everything here is as one would expect from a Necks album. There is a single hour-long track, a two-bar motif repeated endlessly with minute variations "populating" it. Pianist Chris Abrahams remains self-effaced, keeping things very quiet. The light swing in Tony Buck's high-hat and Lloyd Swanton's bass give the piece a serious jazz feel - probably the reason why the group continued to be considered jazz, even though their music exists outside standard categories. It all works well, better than in Aquatic. The music here is not as communicative as in Piano Bass Drums, nor as mesmerizing as in Aether or as contagious as in Hanging Gardens. In the end, Sex stands in the Necks' discography as an average example of their work. One cannot point any specific problem, but they did better albums than this one

5 out of 5 stars Improvisation at it's most universal high.......2003-03-22

The moment this CD starts, your body relaxes and goes with the music. Rhythm, peace and soul are threaded through the notes to create a Jazz masterpiece. It's obvious The Necks were open and working their magic when they created this piece. It lasts 56 minutes and when it ends, you'll start it over and over again. It's a classic that you need in your music library.

Although named "Sex," the 56min song that takes up the whole CD is the perfect background music for a LOT more than just sex. It scores HUGE as dinner music, its calming enough to lull you to sleep too (I listen every night at bedtime), and even my parents LOVE it! This album/song is a MUST have for every household! Album Description

2003 release from this Australian experimental Jazz trio (piano, bass and drum). Keeping with their musical formula, this album consists of one 60+ minute track that begins with a simple, yet melodic, idea and then builds upon it for the next hour, creating a sonic landscape that enchants the listener as it unfolds, challenging the heart, mind and soul of Rock and Jazz music. Although the band have won numerous Jazz awards in their homeland, they are one of the few bands of that genre that have been wholeheartedly embraced by Rock audiences around the world. Many critics have even compared The Necks to original Krautrock bands like Can. Fish Of Milk.

starts with introspective melancholic keyboard refrain, and other instruments unhurriedly, incrementally appear, until it becomes an awesome prog-house-rock-jazz-psych jam. never cluttered and not overstaying its welcome, this hour long track is a very, very nice listen all the way through.

3 out of 5 stars pretty much the ordinary rapcore stuff.......2001-06-21

well, this album isn't bad. but it also isn't good. just pretty mediocre and forgetable. i heard it twice and there wasn't one song that really attracted my attention in beeing very good or very bad. the vocals are the normal rap, the guitar riffs are, well, pretty much the same you hear on every rock/metal record. i gave it 3 stars just because the cd is not bad, and in it's release year 1995 there wasn't as much rap-core...as today. i prefer downset or (hed)p.e.

    Album Description

Aria Award-winning, minimalist Jazz heads, The Necks surprise everyone with 2006's Chemist, their 13th album (awarded Australia's Best Jazz Album 2006). The Necks are renowned world-wide for their one-track, hour-long releases that can seriously mess with the listener's head. So just when you thought you had them figured out, they present three contrasting aesthetics on the one album, each track about 20 minutes long. So is this a sign that The Necks are going commercial? Ahhh..no. Necks fans will not be disappointed ... 'Fatal', the opener, is a churning, swirling, eastern-tinged jam; 'Buoyant' is spacious, even space age, and haunting and 'Abillera' is the shimmering Post-Pop offering featuring a lot of guitar (not exactly an instrument associated with The Necks until now), that brings the album to a close and shows that The Necks are as brimful of ideas now as they were two decades ago. Fish Of Milk.

1 out of 5 stars Wah! I Want My Money Back.......2006-12-19

Three 20-minute songs with maybe 2 minutes of material between them. Repeating the same simplistic drum rhythm and bass line for 20 minutes doesn't equal "hypnotic" for me, it equals boredom. It is not a good sign when you begin fast-forwarding on the first listen....

Neu! mined this vein a long time ago, and did it much better.

4 out of 5 stars Totally mesmerizing and hypnotic........2006-08-07

The Necks are one of those rare bands that we could literally listen to forever. Their sound is just so perfectly hypnotic and so well suited to extended listening. If they invented a new format, where a band could release say, a 24 hour long song, the Necks are the first band we would think of. In fact they actually have played a 24 hour show. We keep hoping it will get released, although the epic scope might be lost split up over 24 discs.
This here is the Necks 13th release in about 20 years. And for a band to stay true to their sound for that long, while remaining viable and listenable and exciting is testament to the Necks' unbelievable skill. F

or those new to the Necks, imagine a three piece jazz ensemble, bass, drums and piano (although, on Chemist, for the first time ever, guitar is introduced, played, oddly enough by drummer Tony Buck), who specialize in extended longform pieces. Ultra minimal, slowly shifting epics, a single riff, a single motif, repeated and looped and subtly colored over the span of ten minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes even 24 hours. Totally mesmerizing and hypnotic.

Chemist is the most rocking Necks record we can remember. At least the opening 20 minute track. The groove is much more upfront, driving, propulsive, like a stripped down jazzed up Can or Faust. Loping, groovy, mesmeric, small flurries of piano drift and flutter over a super solid bass and drums groove. In fact, this almost sounds like a jazzier version of Finnish drone rockers Circle. The same sort of endless riffing and perfectly propulsive rhythm. The second track is much more spare and straight up jazzy, a soft shimmery shuffle, the final track while not quite as aggressive as the opener, does have a similarly relentless rhythm that turns the jazzy drift into something almost 'rocking'. Hard to say this is our favorite Necks record, as we pretty much love them all, but this is definitely the most aggressive and thus pushes a different set of buttons. Necks fans obviously need this. But some of you Circle / Salvatore fans who are up for something a little more dark and jazzy and moody might just dig this A LOT.

        Album Description

1998 release from this Australian experimental Jazz trio (piano, bass and drum), recorded live without overdubs. Keeping with their musical formula, this album consists of one 50+ minute track that begins with a simple, yet melodic, idea and then builds upon it for the next hour, creating a sonic landscape that enchants the listener as it unfolds, challenging the heart, mind and soul of Rock and Jazz music. Although the band have won numerous Jazz awards in their homeland, they are one of the few bands of that genre that have been wholeheartedly embraced by Rock audiences around the world. Many critics have even compared The Necks to original Krautrock bands like Can. Fish Of Milk.
