One of the Best Collections of English Madrigals.......2002-03-27
This album offers a veritable feast of the choicest English madrigals found on any comparable album. From the obligatory "Now is the Month of Maying" and "Fair Phyllis" to the more obscure "Tan ta ra, cries Mars," there is certainly enough on this album to bring a smile to lovers of Renaissance music - and a spark of recognition to anyone who sang traditional madrigals in high school or university. For serious students of early music, this album comes very highly recommended.
Among the more sonorous offerings on this album, Jones' "Farewell, Dear Love" and Dowland's "Come Again," cannot be ignored. Nor can Bennet's immortal "Weep O mine eyes" be matched more musically than here by the King's Singers.
This album has been played again and again for almost 6 years as both serious listening and background working music. And it has yet to lose its delight.

Special recording- Best to Date!.......2005-02-24
Aether is a wonderful 'moment in time'. I hear Jade Warrior's magic (Island Years), Medeski, Martin and Wood (Tonic) and some of the best ECM sounds when that label transformed for a brief time towards a new age leaning sound (Soltice, Towner, Oregon -Vangaurd).
It is a music groups' masterpiece. The musicians 'hear' each other and follow the airy and building mood from beginning to the end of the piece. I normally don't get into too much really mellow sounding stuff, but Aether is just an exceptional record. I can't get enough of it. Exquisite spin!
Geologic music?.......2004-08-07
The composition is basically formed around a cycle of chords that, to start, are very separated-20 seconds peak-to-peak-and gradually move closer together while adding more instrumental color (organ, electric piano, electric bass, arco bass, bells, tumba) around the core of acoustic bass, cymbals, and piano. The opening chord itself gorgeously plunges you into the cycle and the evolution begins; at the end, you can't believe how you arrived there.
Obvious comparisons can be made to Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Can, Fela Kuti, Basinski's Disintegration Loops, and many others but it must be said that The Necks are plying their own sound. There is perhaps a reflection of the Australian landscape-the vast stretches of land, island isolation-seen in the long-form that their music prefers. Indeed, I listened to Aether while driving across Idaho on Highway 20 and found it an ideal companion.

Album Description
The Necks' first album was released in 1989 in Australia and in 1996 on the label Private Music in the U.S. Right from the start, all the elements of the group's sound were firmly in place. The difference between Sex and the many other CDs they would record afterwards is the purity: The trio's hypnotic repetitive piece relies only on piano, bass, and drums; no electronics, extra keyboards, samples, or lengthy introduction. We would have to wait for Piano Bass Drums nine years later before they would come back to these essentials. Apart from the instrumentation, everything here is as one would expect from a Necks album. There is a single hour-long track, a two-bar motif repeated endlessly with minute variations "populating" it. Pianist Chris Abrahams remains self-effaced, keeping things very quiet. The light swing in Tony Buck's high-hat and Lloyd Swanton's bass give the piece a serious jazz feel - probably the reason why the group continued to be considered jazz, even though their music exists outside standard categories. It all works well, better than in Aquatic. The music here is not as communicative as in Piano Bass Drums, nor as mesmerizing as in Aether or as contagious as in Hanging Gardens. In the end, Sex stands in the Necks' discography as an average example of their work. One cannot point any specific problem, but they did better albums than this oneAlbum Details

Album Description
2003 release from this Australian experimental Jazz trio (piano, bass and drum). Keeping with their musical formula, this album consists of one 60+ minute track that begins with a simple, yet melodic, idea and then builds upon it for the next hour, creating a sonic landscape that enchants the listener as it unfolds, challenging the heart, mind and soul of Rock and Jazz music. Although the band have won numerous Jazz awards in their homeland, they are one of the few bands of that genre that have been wholeheartedly embraced by Rock audiences around the world. Many critics have even compared The Necks to original Krautrock bands like Can. Fish Of Milk.Customer Reviews:

Album Description
Aria Award-winning, minimalist Jazz heads, The Necks surprise everyone with 2006's Chemist, their 13th album (awarded Australia's Best Jazz Album 2006). The Necks are renowned world-wide for their one-track, hour-long releases that can seriously mess with the listener's head. So just when you thought you had them figured out, they present three contrasting aesthetics on the one album, each track about 20 minutes long. So is this a sign that The Necks are going commercial? Ahhh..no. Necks fans will not be disappointed ... 'Fatal', the opener, is a churning, swirling, eastern-tinged jam; 'Buoyant' is spacious, even space age, and haunting and 'Abillera' is the shimmering Post-Pop offering featuring a lot of guitar (not exactly an instrument associated with The Necks until now), that brings the album to a close and shows that The Necks are as brimful of ideas now as they were two decades ago. Minimalist Jazz-heads the Necks Are Set to Surprise Everyone with their 2006 Release, "Chemist." Rather Than the Usual One-track, Hour-long Release, on "Chemist" the Necks Present Three Contrasting Aesthetics on One Album, with Each Track About 20 Minutes Long.Customer Reviews:

Totally mesmerizing and hypnotic........2006-08-07
This here is the Necks 13th release in about 20 years. And for a band to stay true to their sound for that long, while remaining viable and listenable and exciting is testament to the Necks' unbelievable skill. F
or those new to the Necks, imagine a three piece jazz ensemble, bass, drums and piano (although, on Chemist, for the first time ever, guitar is introduced, played, oddly enough by drummer Tony Buck), who specialize in extended longform pieces. Ultra minimal, slowly shifting epics, a single riff, a single motif, repeated and looped and subtly colored over the span of ten minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes even 24 hours. Totally mesmerizing and hypnotic.
Chemist is the most rocking Necks record we can remember. At least the opening 20 minute track. The groove is much more upfront, driving, propulsive, like a stripped down jazzed up Can or Faust. Loping, groovy, mesmeric, small flurries of piano drift and flutter over a super solid bass and drums groove. In fact, this almost sounds like a jazzier version of Finnish drone rockers Circle. The same sort of endless riffing and perfectly propulsive rhythm. The second track is much more spare and straight up jazzy, a soft shimmery shuffle, the final track while not quite as aggressive as the opener, does have a similarly relentless rhythm that turns the jazzy drift into something almost 'rocking'. Hard to say this is our favorite Necks record, as we pretty much love them all, but this is definitely the most aggressive and thus pushes a different set of buttons. Necks fans obviously need this. But some of you Circle / Salvatore fans who are up for something a little more dark and jazzy and moody might just dig this A LOT.
