King Britt [Import]

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Think Moby's 'Play' done the right way. This record is guaranteed to be huge on various levels. Morgan fires up traditional hymns with hot chant and spoken reverie, accompanied only by her changing tambourine. This is divine minimalism, a meaty hallelujah in which you can clearly hear the Delta-church origins of Jamaica Rasta-DJ culture and early Bronx hip-hop. 15 total tracks. Ryko. 2005.

Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Great western soundtrack.......2004-02-28

This is a must buy for fans of western soundtracks. It mixes beautifully symphonic music with Guitar music and spices it up all together with a south of the border flavor. Haunting music that will make you want to never take it out of your cd changer. It also
Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

5 out of 5 stars Truly Incredible.......2003-03-12

This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

On this first volume of a proposed "autobiography" of his listening career, producer King Britt updates the sound of the black radio of 1970s Philly with 1990s rap and production tricks. He makes sonic references to the smooth flow of Gamble and Huff as well as to the drawled proto-rap poetry of the Last Poets, and Britt honors mellow diva disco with a gorgeous, faithful-in-its-fashion cover of "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life." The loops he pulls out of his crates are from a time when black and white pop nourished each other; the album has the deceptively utopian glow of nostalgia, but it radiates with soul and warmth, too. --Douglas Wolk

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The last great black ALBUM of the 1990s.......2006-05-16

My title may be extreme to some of you, but I really do feel this way. By the time, this album actually came out, there were countless Maxwell wannabes, D'Angelo had virutally disappeared, and female R&B was being dominated by a skinny, headwrap, wearin' sista from Texas. In all honesty, everyone was starting to sound like everyone else.

If I hadn't stumbled into Tower Records and decided to check this one out on the listening station, I would've never known about this album. It's a great ALBUM...meaning it's great from start to finish. And because this is a "concept" album (an overused term, but anyway...) a film without pictures so to speak, you almost HAVE to listen to the album from start to finish. In all honesty, I owned the album for several months before I learned to appreciate it as a great album.

The song that made me purchase the album was "When the Funk Starts to Swing", a sweet slice of jazz-funk harkening back to the heyday of CTI records. Once I actually started listening to the album in its entirety a realized that every song on this ablum--save one--is a standout cut and has its own identity. The previously mentioned tune is one of my favorites, along with "Jimmy Leans Back", "Gettin' Into It", and "When the Funk Hits the Fan" (a dance-club take on "When the Funk Starts to Swing").

The one weak spot on this otherwise glorious album is "The Reason", which unimaginatively lays vocals over a sample of Boz Scaggs, "Lowdown." The real gem is that you get to hear a clip of King Britt's "original mix" of "The Reason" just before the "lowdown" version starts. The "original mix" can be found on the Sylk 130 "The Reason" EP. Why they didn't use this far more superior version of the song on the album is beyond me. "The Reason" EP is definitely worth seeking out for this song as well as an extended version of "When the Funk Hits the Fan."

Anyway, this snafu not withstanding, this is still THE last great album in black music for the 1990s.

5 out of 5 stars Make Sure To Get The Unedited Version.......2005-08-10

This seems like a great cd but unfortunately my copy is for kids or something and all the "swearing" is swerved out. It's extremely irritating and keeps me from enjoying the tunes. Very disappointing and it doesn't seem to say that it's the "clean" version anywhere on it.

4 out of 5 stars Funky beats take you back to HS.......2004-06-22

You'll remember chillin' on the stoop of your best friend's house in tenth grade, listening to a boombox straining some musical sounds through the air... even if you never did that.

The tracks Britt (aka Sylk, it's one in the same) creates here are infused with a deep soul. Male vocals and easy rapping stand tall on some tracks, but there are never any hos or bling-bling in this rap.

Female vocals take center stage, and they're a decidedly different feel than the masculine tracks. Very poetic, some deeply sung as if from a smoky jazz club.

This is music for people who grew up in the majority of the US, not a scrubbed-up suburb version or the down-and-dirty ghetto place. There are elements of both those here, with a track like Taggin' and Braggin' obviously talking about committing small crime, in this case graffiti.

However, most of the issues here are overtaken by the groove: buy this album for its flow. Standout tracks include the aforementioned Taggin', the wonderful, true-to-its-roots "DJ Saved My Life" cover, the super-groovy title track, and a wonderfully-sampled The Reason.

Some of the tracks are a little too serious in their poetry, but if you're into that, you'll love it (namely, "A Day in the Life," and "E.R.A"). Break out the beatnik berets and start a-snappin' your fingers.

Overall, however, this album is all about a great groove, and it keeps it going on lots of nicely-crafted tracks. A great discovery for those sick of modern rap and something closer to Tribe and De La Soul, but with not as much of a ghetto, street edge.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Mix Of Urban Grooves.......2000-04-18

This CD was given to me by a person who read some of my CD reviews. I heard the track "When The Funk Hits The Fan" a couple of years ago but never knew who made it. This was a great trade because I'm always in to new underground music and this one is excellent. A touch of acid, funk, and soul cover CD and I'm my ears were blessed by it's sounds. A great CD for collection of good music.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Seductive Dance Music..........2006-01-17

A deeply soulful house, erotic, stylish, emotive and sensual recording made by King Britt, fantastic selection of songs, with his entry in Swank's Recordings Late Night series, King focus on another of his strengths: gently soulful, highly atmospheric dance music.
The set's tropical vibe and Latin influence almost seems like the perfect soundtrack for hot nights (smoke) in the beach or in your sofa (smoke). The album is a mind expanding journey that builds from something soulful into something really smoke. Britt's own mix of Plantlife's "When She Smiles" is one of the best moments on the CD. Vocalist KimBlee's seductive voice on Solu Music's Naturally also provides that extra bit of spark. Britt never strays too far from his trademark sensual house sound, which makes this album of contemporary rhythms a great addition to anyone's collection.
Everything in SLOW-MOTION continues track after track in seductive way and you feel your body stay in a perfect moment, music for minds, for hungry ears, for perfect and slow dance, alone or with company and this record is a good selection, must have.

    3 out of 5 stars King Britt.......2005-12-10

Late Night with King Britt is a pretty mellow downbeat album. It has a slower more R&B flavor to the music. This is good for late night listening.

I've actually used it to drive to work with for the calming effect it has on me (traffic in Phx is awful).

On the same note, there are hundreds of other downbeat/ chill albums out there and this one's not exactly breaking new ground here.

Overall, a good album, not a great one. I'm not sure it's worth the whopping overpriced listing of $17.98, but it'd definitely be worth a used price.

4 out of 5 stars LATE NIGHT WITH KING BRITT.......2005-10-04

This CD is an excellent to any House music lovers collection. Britt puts all the mixes on here smooth and effortlessly. What I look for and enjoy is a CD that I can listen through without skipping any songs. This CD does that. If you love that deep and soulful House music this is the CD for you.

5 out of 5 stars FOUND MY "HIDDEN TREASURE"!!!.......2006-05-03

I just picked up this disc 4 years after its release. I'm usually always late when it comes to discovering fresh, hot talent. But I'm always on a constant search to find new music no matter when it came out--just as long as it doesn't sound dated. King Britt a/k/a/ Scuba does an excellent job of bringing you music that will always sound fresh and inviting for years to come. From beginning to end "Hidden Treasures" offers rare, remixed tracks that are every bit atmospheric and catchy as they are groovin' and funky. "Hidden Treasures" will have you feeling remarkably relaxed while at the same time evoking that dancefloor demon inside you. Highly Recommended!!!

    4 out of 5 stars A great album people don't know about........2006-03-08

There are some really good tracks on this album. One I feel that is great is "I Bet You Never Thought I'd Find You." This album makes for a nice chill out session.

5 out of 5 stars Top 10 deep house album.......2005-06-21

King britt is as good in deep house music as in hip-hop, jazz, soul, & broken beat...I discovered this CD with the title "High Priestess (Scuba remix). This was the most amazing deep house track I had ever heard. It made me dream, imagine, it was a masterpiece. Deep vocals, dreamy soundscape and catchy drum programming, scuba project is really innovative. Other tracks? really good too. 4X4, Wake Up, Adore...deep house at his best. When you hear it, you wanna close your eyes and goin' trough a long & deep imaginative travel...
Like adventures in lo-fi, Scuba is a fantastic project. Hidden treasures is fresh, and MUST be in your deep house collection.

3 out of 5 stars not really sure yet........2005-02-18

today, i finally decided to throw down the 15 bucks for "hidden treasures". i've read fantastic reviews for this album, and all the reviewers on amazon.com seem to like it. so i sprung for it.

it's taking a little while to sink in. i immeadiately liked the remix, or reconstruction of the tweaker song "linoleum". i think it is great. but, after that, i'm not sure. i'm sure it will grow on me, like a fungus, until it becomes an edidble mushroom, capable of taking my mind to new places. but, until then, i'll give it 3and1half stars.

    5 out of 5 stars Smooth Genius.......2003-05-01

Scuba (King Britt) is as versatile as they come. He is able to combine all sorts of sounds from deep house to ambient/chill music. His style of using voices as an instrument, almost like skat music, is amazing. Then he throws it on top of a broken beat that just makes you nod your head. Most of the tracks are not your trance norm, so if you are a remix fan looking for some heavy dancefloor beats, this might not be the album for you. However, if you are willing to expand your horizons, this may be the album to do it.

I am a big fan of the broken beat style. Scuba seems to have mastered it. Its amazing what he has done. This CD is remarkable and I recommend it to all. Happy Listening.

5 out of 5 stars King Britt Presents: Sister Gertrude Morgan .......2006-01-05

Primitive folk art painter, singer, poet, street preacher and "servant of the Lord" in several capacities (including running orphanages and missions in the poorest parts of New Orleans) Sister Gertrude Morgan was born in 1900 and died in 1980. That was long before she received international recognition for her artwork and former Digable Planets DJ and world-renowned remixer and producer King Britt remixed her music into a soulful psychedelic epic.

It's fitting that Morgan once made her home in the Ninth Ward, the destitute area most affected by Hurricane Katrina, because her voice now calls like a righteous, insistent spirit from that spoiled Southern soil. It's also fitting that the woman who ran an orphanage that was blown away by Hurricane Betsy in 1965 finally is being rediscovered, years after her death, in the wake of another, even more devastating, storm.

Long before this album (which ironically was released a short time before Katrina hit) and long before her renaissance hit full swing in 2003, when a limited-edition release of her lone album, Let's Make a Record (originally recorded in 1970), was issued to a small but vocal group of critics and collectors, Morgan was roaming the streets of New Orleans, preaching, singing and shouting from the city's street corners. Dressed in a pristine white nurse's uniform meant to signify both her self-appointed role as a "bride of Christ" and her role as a spiritual healer to the sick souls she saw wandering the streets of the French Quarter, Morgan would preach and sing, accompanied usually by nothing more than a tambourine. This a cappella style eventually was captured on tape in 1970 on the aforementioned Let's Make a Record, which King Britt and his crew recently reinterpreted.

The album that King Britt has made is fervently and unflinchingly religious due to the nature of the lyrics, but the power and passion of Morgan's voice truly transcend any denomination or belief. Less songs than chants, Morgan's improvised sermon songs slowly revolve around a central theme, such as "I Am the Living Bread," until her chanting, circular singing becomes a spiral, spinning her message up through infinity, a process helped along by Britt's alternately ecstatic and euphoric beats. This album is more mantra than Moby, who also famously employed unearthed a cappella soul singers on his enormously successful Play album. These tunes are aimed more at moving your spirit, not your booty.

Morgan literally created many of these memorable tunes on the spot, famously shouting to the original album's engineer, "Let's make a record for our Lord!" before shaking her tambourine and immediately extemporizing on that theme while the fellas with the tape machine rushed to push record.

It's this song, more than any of the others on the album, that really shows the inspired and spiritually uplifting strength of this collaboration. King Britt and his musical partner, Tim Motzer, labored for 12 months to make this epic reinterpretation of Morgan's work into a hymn to her genius, and on Let's Make a Record you can hear that effort. Britt and Motzer rarely let their sonic experimentation detract from Morgan's original intent. In most cases, and especially on Let's Make a Record, it sounds like she was as present at the making of this album as any of the other guest musicians. When a fuzzy '60s skwonking guitar counters her voice or a humming buzz echoes her droning vocals, it lends credibility to King Britt's assertion that Morgan was at the studio in spirit.

Everyone is looking for a way to contribute to the relief effort in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast this holiday season, and this record is one way to make a small but measurable difference in keeping alive a music institution such as Preservation Hall, which always supported Sister Gertrude Morgan and even in its displaced state continues to do so.

4 out of 5 stars An uplifting message with base!! .......2005-12-29

I listened to her music on NPR on my way to work one day. What a powerful message! I had to buy the CD. I was not disappointed. However, I will say this about King Britt's presentation. While some of his musical inserts worked perfectly with her singing, there were times in which I heard so much base that I heard nothing of Sister Gertrude. I would strongly suggest that you compare her original CD with King Britt's version. You can do this for free on NPR.org.

      5 out of 5 stars love it.......2005-11-14

very sympathetic remix of sister gertrude. I love her both with and without king britt.

5 out of 5 stars Skip King Britt. .......2005-10-19

Buy Sister Morgan's album without the filler. She doesn't need it. POWER, POWER LORD! Amen.

For the second installment in his trilogy of conceptual albums, Philadelphia DJ King Britt has created a fictional radio station, WISH 130, to pay homage to the music of the '80s. Britt's flawless replication of echo drum machine patterns on some of the tracks may induce flashbacks to big hair and fluorescent socks of the period, but like any good nostalgist, he only remembers the good things about the decade. This is borne out by his meticulous choice of collaborators such as Alison Moyet, Martin Fry of U.K. blue-eyed soulsters ABC, De La Soul, and the late Grover Washington. As Britt enthusiasts would expect, the mix is eclectic, tapping new wave, subdued proto-house, and hip-hop along the way. Britt captures the spirit of the time, yet imbues the tracks with a present-day perspective. While this approach doesn't really translate well on the uninspired cover of Nu Shooz's "I Can't Wait," he does capture the wide-eyed optimism of the decade with the strident vocals of Alma Horton ("Happiness") and Kathy Sledge ("Rising"). Conversely, the deep and moody orchestral territory explored on "Skipping Stones" and "I'll Do It For You" coaxes gorgeous performances from the aforementioned Moyet and Vikter Duplaix, respectively. While not as cohesive as the '70s-inspired "When the Funk Hits the Fan," Re-Members Only reminds us to resist blinkered radio-style formatting, and is a refreshing notice to keep connecting the musical dots. --Del F. 5 out of 5 stars Great follow up..........2004-04-18

This album unfolds with repeated listens. It's a great reflection on what the 80's had to offer musically recalling other fads and memorabilia(like "members only" jackets). The production alone is an interesting amalgam of new wave, early and late 80's r &b, old skool hip hop and hybrids. The album closer the Beauty of Machines even harkens Herbie Hancock's "Rock It" while 'Romeo is Bleeding' samples the late 70's early 80's "Rude Movements" with finesse. A horn-laden cover of the Nu Shooz jam "I Can't Wait" solidifies the 80's ethos. This LP serves as an interesting point of reference, showcasing how the 80's had a definitive sound and how all of those genres in the 80's drew from each other. Considering now there seems to be an 80's resurgence in sounds this album was ahead of the pack. I look forward to the final Sylk 130 installment.

      5 out of 5 stars Re-Members Only.......2002-08-28

Re-Members Only, is BRILLIANT, I think only true 80's music aficionados will love and understand this album. If you listened to New Wave and Hip Hop in the mid 80's this will make sense to you. King Brit did a great job. He used hit makers from 80's artists such as Martin Fry from ABC and Alison Moyet of Yaz, and reinterprets the sound of the eighties with a contemporary spin. Most of the music is new and original, though he did a remake of "I Cant Wait" originally done by Nu Shooz, and gave it new life.

This is a great follow up to "When the Funk Hits the Fan", this musical journey is not accompanied by a storey line, a feature that worked well on Brit's first album. This journey is across the different types music of the decade instead of focusing only on Funk.

This album is full of great artists, Grover Washington JR, Kathy Sledge Pos and Trugoy of De La Soul.

This album makes so much sense to me.

1 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like this.......2001-12-23

I LOVED When the Funk Hits the Fan and could never understand why it didn't do better in the US. So I was interested to see how King Britt would handle the 80's on Re-Members Only, which is supposed to draw from the style of music in that decade.

Bottom line: I don't think this CD works. The music sounds nothing like the 80's. There's a few touches that sound right. The basslines on "Rising" and a few other tracks have an early 80's/Gap Band/Madonna feel. Some of the tacky programmed drums are soooo eighties you cringe (you know that percussion that sounds like someone shaking a box of Tic-Tacs?). Otherwise, Re-Members Only completely misses the feel of 80s music. 80's music bounced more than it grooved, so the slow tempo on this CD seems like an odd choice. It's more along the lines of pop-oriented drum and bass than 80's dance music.

That point aside, this CD fails because the material just isn't very good. Few tracks make much of an impression and most are impossible to recall three seconds after they end. The notable exception is "Happiness". The only other tracks that worked for me were "Rising", Capitol A's "All the Way Live", and (maybe) the passable retread of Nu Shooz's "I Can't Wait".

      A big dissapointment.

4 out of 5 stars DIDN'T LOVE IT AS MUCH AS I PROBABLY SHOULD'VE.......2001-09-18

I can't explain it. I just didn't love it. Maybe I will next year. I give it four stars because it definitely doesn't deserve less than that.

      5 out of 5 stars 80's Revisited.......2001-03-19

Ever since I bought King Britt's When the Funk Hits the Fan I have been anticipating Re-Members Only. Britt had a number of troubles with Columbia and Ruffhouse with releasing Re-Members so he moved Ovum Recordings over to Six Degrees which is an excellent label with a number of great down-tempo electronic / world artists. With his second Sylk 130 album, Britt successfully captures the feel of 80's R+B and synth pop with some contemporary bass lines. I don't think the song writing is as tight as When the Fun Hits the Fan, there are no tracks like Seasons or Gorgeous, but Britt's production is definately on point. I was pleased to see that Cee Knowledge and his Cosmic Funk Orchestra make an appearence after his hiatus from lime light and Pos and Troy of De La Soul also lend their vocal talents. Grover Washington Jr. can also be found on one of the albums best tracks, For Love. I also noticed that there doesn't seem to be any sampling on Re-Members unlike When the Funk Hits the Fan. Re-Members Only is not an album to be slept on and neither is the single Happiness which has some tight remixes. If you get a chance, pick up When the Funk Hits the Fan also because it has some great R+B tracks with more acoustic instruments. Funk is a beautiful album and Re-Members Only is a great follow-up. The only thing left to do now is to wait for the third Sylk 130 project to drop.

Ps- Keep an eye out for Ursula Rucker's album (a fellow aPHILYate to King Britt who did a lot of the production for her album). She'll be coming out of K7! Studios. Also, Britt might release another album under his guise Scuba.
