The Presidents of the United States of America scratch that itch that you can't reach. They do and say all those things that you'd like to, but fear what people might think of you. They are your inner-child, but stinking drunk on a half-case of cheap beer. And, with the youthful appeal of the Dead Milkmen, the off-kilter storytelling of Primus, and a razor-sharp sense of irony, they are utterly undeniable.

Try, if you will, not to sing along with "Lump." It sticks in your brain after the first chorus and won't leave until you hear something supremely catchy just to scrape the chorus out of heavy frontal lobe rotation. Musically, they keep everything very minimal (they have only five strings between bassist Chris Ballew and guitarist Dave Dederer) and use their incredibly twisted wit to engage the listener. From the punkish "Lump" and "We Are Not Gonna Make It" to the funky "Boll Weevil," the Presidents are the perfect antidote to the serious, heavy-handed rock perpetuated by their Seattle brethren. --Adem Tepedelen

Album Description

The Presidents Of The United States Of America's 1995 debut went double platinum in the U.S., rocketed all the way to #6 on Billboard's Top 200, produced three Top 40 hits & a #1 single on Billboard's Modern Rock Chart, and garnered two Grammy nominations and a gaggle of critical praise. You either loved this record or…you loved it.

The band is back and, believe it or not, they once again own this album. They've chosen NAIL to distribute it, which is in line with their renewed esprit de corps and desire to keep things friendly and local this time around. The album is on the band's own PUSA Music label, headquartered in their hometown of Seattle, just up the road from NAIL's Portland HQ. Getting the rights to this classic debut back from Sony precipitated the band's recent much anticipated reunion.

The Presidents played their first show in five years on New Year's Eve 2002, and in the last year and a half they've continued gathering steam. The new songs originally recorded for the re-release of their debut became a whole new album, 'Love Everybody,' which produced the current radio hit "Some Postman." The band has been touring the U.S. this summer and fall in support of that release, and will continue with dates in major markets through the end of 2004.

5 out of 5 stars 10 years on and still improving with age.......2005-08-22

I bought his album ten years ago when it came out first. It was special at the time, singles like 'peaches' and 'lump' matched my energy at the time. It seemed like there was only one song that summer, 'peaches' and it lasted beyond. The songs on the original are great summer party songs and they still are. I lost my original a while back and the summers just werent the same - this album has a great energy and this summer was made complete with this release. The added material is interesting but a little desparate, there are some good alternate versions of the originals and some demos. The demos are interesting to see how the process involved in songwriting works and then to compare with the finished product, as i said interesting but i could have done without half of the bonus material. The original album hasnt lost any of its vibrant, headbopping energy and the sometimes complete childish idioacy of the lyrics makes the music special in its genre and still makes me grin. Yes, i am that old fart in the office, 2 stone heavier, and thinks that nightclubs are to noisy - reliving the lost pleasures of youth and fond memories - it works for me. This album is good fun both 10 years ago and today. enjoy the fun.

4 out of 5 stars Cool CD.......2005-07-29

I sent this cd to a good friend who's an avid PUSA fan and he liked the album so much that until now he never fails to say thank you (that's 2 weeks since I gave him the cd). I like their 2 songs, Peaches and Lump. A good ol' punk CD. :)

5 out of 5 stars Everybody Wants To Be Naked And Famous.......2005-02-06

Talk about nostalgia. I wore this album out back when I was 14. When I got a couple years older, I sold most of my CDs because I needed money and wanted to put off getting a job for as long as I could. Unfortunately, this album was one of those I sold. I downloaded this album a few months ago and fell in love with it again. I remembered and sang all the words to every song with a huge, beaming smile on my face the whole time. Song to song, this album is a complete blast. It's brilliantly simple, tons of fun, and outrageously sophomoric. If you're looking to hear social commentary, look elsewhere. In this country run by these Presidents you'll hear songs about animals, chicks, dune buggies, and 30 foot smurfs. Being that my last name is Peach, I feel like I have some sort of connection with these guys, even though it got to be annoying during high school when the song "Peaches" was big. Now being 10 years older and in the "real" world, I listen to this album and it transports me to a time in my life when I didn't have a care in the world. It's the type of album you put on when you're wasted or when you're just plain lurking to rock out. I'm excited that they got back together and they're making music again. Looking forward to hearing more stuff and hopefully seeing them on tour.

5 out of 5 stars THEY"RE BAAAACK.......2005-01-07

I loved this CD when it first came out, i was a freshman in high school. It was stolen from me and i have been searching for it since then. I went to the local CD store, where they can order any CD you can think of, only to find out that it was out of print. I was bummed! Then i thought, about AMAZON and how they have new and used figuring that someone had to be selling a used copy. I was elated to see my favorite CD not only back in print but enhanced by a bonus DVD. To my fellow generation, buy now, relive those fund days of High School when these guys rocked our world. Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow!

5 out of 5 stars YEAH, THE PRESIDENTS ARE BACK!.......2004-11-06

Finally, after many years, the Presidents decided to re-release their 1st album. It went out of print a little while ago, just as I was getting into these guys. And now, they have brought it back on their independent label. Now we can all get our daily dosage of ROK!

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Decent.......2007-06-21

This was your typical album, rather than a continuous mix. I prefer the latter, but hearing the individual songs made me learn how often other DJs use these songs in their mixes. The duo may have put their best foot forward: the best songs came near the beginning. The inner pages of the booklet have many photos of the musicians with friends and partygoers. I think they want to remind listeners that their music may be designed for raves and their attendees. Still, it's not really necessary. When I listen to music, I don't ask myself, "Do the musicians have lots of friends and other fans?" This wasn't the DnB that blows my mind away, however, I enjoyed this disc. If you want some decent DnB, you might as well get this. I wasn't disappointed by this purchase in the least. In fact, I wish the duo the best.

5 out of 5 stars debut album from brasillian drum n bass superheros.......2004-08-02

Finally, Marky & XRS have released their first album unto the world of drum n' bass. This isn't an album full of raging anthems of course, it's more along the lines of the groundbreaking "New Forms" released in 1997 by Roni Size and Reprezant. If you can dig this more accessible approach to drum n'bass then you wont have a problem loving this album.

My only complaint is that the album is unmixed, and I prefer my drum n bass mixed. However, it works in it's own way, not to mention it is the best proper musical album out of the drum n' bass scene since 2001's Desert Rose by the infamous DJ SUV.

The tracks are very soulful throughout, though not necessarily complex with the drum work. The so called brasillian sound is strong on some and not as strong on others, but present thru spirit throughout the album. No one will be disappointed by this album, and if you are in search of quality sounding drum n'bass that's intelligent but doesnt put you to sleep and can be played in your headphones or at the club, then IN ROTATION is essential to your record collection.

Album Description

HEAVY ROTATION is the new release from New York's JEFFERSON THOMAS....fourteen tracks of Jefferson's own brand of infectious pop gems, served up hot over a din of unruly guitars, post-modern beats, and scratchy blue-eyed-soul vocals.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What a great album!.......2002-09-24

I saw Jefferson Thomas play in Central Park recently. I tried to buy a copy of this CD after the show, but they sold out too fast! And I'm not surprised. Not only are all the songs on the CD great, but they sound even better live, because Jefferson's band is HOT! So often you think an album is great and then you go to see somebody live and you're let down, but not in this case. My favorite song was "Another Year" until I saw the Central Park show, and they did such a beautiful job on "Gold" that I think that's my favorite now.

Great songs, great voice, great stage presence - and the album has a HUGE booklet with all the lyrics. And don't turn off your CD player right away after the last song...if you wait long enough, there are some hilarious out-takes that come in at the end. This CD is worth every penny!

5 out of 5 stars Heavy Rotation.......2002-09-09

This is a great album!!!! He is something of a mix of Sheryl Crow and Melissa Etheridge, a great singer/songwriter who hasn't forgoten how to rock. I've seen him live 3 times, if he is in your area, be sure to check him out, until then get this album!! I haven't been able to get it out of my CD player since I got it.

When most people think of folk music, they think of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Peter, Paul and..., you know the crowd. Folk music--like other genres of music--has evolved into dozens of styles and artists.Lisa Witty is a Singer/Songwriter. Her music doesn't fit the cookie-cutter molds of Folk music. Lisa's songs aren't angry or preoccupied with social injustice; rather they are true-blue, honest, diverse, profound and fun. "Color Me In" is easy to listen to and makes for a great road trip choice for the CD changer. Still waiting for her next CD.
