Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Grand Central Records have selected the most lauded vinyl releases of 2002 & compiled them on a CD for those who only got to enjoy them on the dance floor. As the label's output ranges from dirty hip-hop through to soul & funk - similarly this release does also. From the dirty beats of 'Quickness' & funk led bass lines on 'Clean Up' to sweeping acoustic guitars in 'Do As You Did' & quirky female vocals on 'Sound off' & 'Lavish'. The collection fairly represents the innovativeness that's coming out of this fiercely independent label. 2003.

5 out of 5 stars Jeff's Jazz.......2007-04-12

I like this CD. It's the kind of music that I enjoy and expect from Jeff Golub. I'd recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys contemporary jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Jeff Golub - Grand Central.......2007-04-10

Being a fellow guitarist, I can appreciate the work that goes into a project like this. This piece is one of my favorite JG pieces if not my MOST favorite. If you are even a casual jazz fan, you will LOVE this as I have. - SPK

5 out of 5 stars Can't stop listening to tracks from it........2007-03-25

Contrary to prior comments, this CD on Narada (his 2nd for this label) is Jeff's 10th release where he is the featured artist (several releases were under the band Jeff lead called Avenue Blue). Golub contues to release material reflecting his evolution as an artist. Not squarely wanting to fit into the "smooth jazz" format, this CD has several tracks featuring Jeff's tight guitar licks with an edge beginning with the lead track "Hello Betty."

Jeff made sure to invite several good friends to help out with this project including Rick Braun, Richard Elliot & Kirk Whalum. Kirk will be on tour throughout 2007 with Jeff ( I know since I also just bought my ticket). I think you will find substanital difference in this CD compared to "Soul Sessions" but Jeff's guitar voice is always present.

AS good as the CD is, it does not capture Jeff in concert. Til you can see him, this is good way to pass the time.

4 out of 5 stars New York jazz vibes........2007-03-06

This is Jeff's seventh solo album, which shows off his wonderful jazz guitar work and improvisation.
It is a cool, gentle journey through the ever evolving music of Jeff Golub. Along with a crispy, funky and groove-laden exterior there is some great blues & soul inspired work.
Jeff Golub wrote or co-wrote eight new songs for "Grand Central" in addition to covering Sly Stone's "If You Want Me To Stay", George Harrison's "Something" (produced by Paul Brown), and the soulful "Ain't No Woman", featuring the saxophonist Richard Elliot in a fantastic fashion.
It's feel-good album, lot of warmth, positivity and emotion in here.
It is infectious to the listener.
Jeff's melodies have consistently risen to the top of the smooth jazz radio and album charts.
It's a super smooth jazz album wich is radio friendly, totally laid back, this is about as good as it gets.
"Hello Betty", "Grand Central" and "Ain't No Woman( Like The One I Got)" are killer cuts on the album, worth buying alone just to hear and enjoy them.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Perhaps I should start by admitting a bias: Many years ago, lying on Boston's grassy Esplanade by the Charles River on warm summer nights, I learned what a symphony orchestra should sound like, with Arthur Fiedler conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra. Those concerts were free; these seven compact discs are not--not quite. But for any lover of light classical music, they are certainly one of the best buys available. The orchestra (essentially the Boston Symphony) is one of the world's greatest; the music, from Smoke Gets in Your Eyes to the Goyescas Intermezzo and Ride of the Valkyries is instantly enjoyable and permanently valuable; the conductor is at the same time genial and exacting, convinced that any music you play, no matter how frivolous, deserves the best you can give it. --Joe McLellan

Album Description

Useless Wooden Toys is twenty eight year old Jon Kennedy's third album. Instead of relying on the multitude of programs available to him he has made a new standard by his pioneering innovation in `sound design'. He sang, played all the instruments himself, as well as made instruments to create his own samples. The actual `sounds' that the music is made up from stretch the imagination: What does a hi-hat sound like when you play it through a wah wah? What noise does a snare make if you down tune it? What happens if you play drums in the bathroom, then cut up that sound, stretch it out, then delay it? And an African drum, what would that sound like with a lump of clay in it?

In the inception of `Useless Wooden Toys' Jon played the Contra Bass, Bongos, Acoustic Guitar, Bass Guitar, Piano, Harmonica and his beloved Drums as well as providing most of the vocals. He created instruments out of tree trunks and experimented with small lumps of clay dropped into a Djembe (an African drum). Many of the instruments are not easily recognizable as he has redesigned the sound and then pushed it to its limits.

Dan Berridge releases In Finite, the third album from his critically acclaimed Broadway Project on Grand Central Records.

An all-out composer, Berridge has scored numerous award winning short films and completed commissions for Channel 4 and the BBC. Inspired by the love of avant-garde jazz, hip hop breaks and the cinema aesthetic, the Broadway Project sound is naturally epic. Its soul penetrating grooves are gripped by a deep emotional charge and indeed, the project did initially only take form as something of a creative outlet for Dan's recovery from ME/chronic fatigue syndrome.

A blessing in disguise perhaps, as within two years Broadway Project had numerous EPs out on London's Memphis Industries label, followed by two albums: Compassion and The Vessel.

Fulfilling his ultimate aim of translating Broadway Project into a stage performance, Berridge retains the grand scale of his work while delivering a contemporary and unique performance: beats and piano led, with the free jazz aesthetic interwoven throughout. One man and his laptop, this is not. Accompaniment includes some of the UK's best young jazz musicians, such as Perrier Award winning Matthew Bourne on piano and Riaan Vosloo on double bass, both of whom have taken time out from their own electric jazz outfit, the Electric Dr M, to play on `In Finite'.

Taking the heavy crack of cutting edge hip-hop production techniques, he whips his earthy jazz and classical influences into an emotionally compelling frenzy. Ethereal melancholic sounds will seep into your blood, grab your inner core and pin you down whilst simultaneously evoking an overwhelming feeling of breaking free and escaping. Obsessive, emotive and clever - this is a labour of love like no other.

Prepare to be blown away.

5 out of 5 stars All of what makes music great is in this album.......2007-06-13

Though Dan Berridge is not a hardcore veteran producer, he is quickly becoming one of the most accomplished. As much as there was stylistic improvement from Compassion to The Vessel, so is the improvement from The Vessel to In Finite. Even the most inattentive listener could hear this as Dan himself said, "It's my 3rd album, but at the same time my first. I've found a sound that I've been looking for." Relevant to this continuing evolution is the complete lack of vocals on this album, instead placing focus solely on aural construction. Far less noticeable sampling takes place here as James White returns from Vessel with several new guest musicians to give BP's chamber cinematics a more visceral live atmosphere with less of a static approach to the record pop loops which come standard on almost every Broadway Project track produced. "Raga" basks in Capitol K's "City" territory with that trip-hop filtered guitar reminiscent of the distorted guitar like vocal sample from the peak of Blockhead's "Insomniac Olympics" but the advancing aptitude of Berridge's production and white noise/picture show style obvious and distinct to anyone who hears all three projects is present throughout. He just keeps getting better. Album highlight "Blood In The Temple" may be the darkest and hardest BP song yet matching a hard-hitting DJ Shadow growl beat with his own delicate layering of menacing organic sounds. Simply put, In Finite is more intelligent and better mixed/mastered than BP has ever been.

      Album Description

Mark Rae has been at the forefront of the UK music scene for over a decade. DJ, producer, remixer, record company owner and artist, he has a passion for music, which has taken him to his latest destination.

Into The Depths is Mark's second solo album (his first, Rae Road was released in 2002) and represents a maturity of song writing and production skills.

There are bold musical references to Mark's hip-hop roots with his choice of beats and rhythms on the new material. However, the emphasis is now firmly with the creation of a vibe with live musicians which has been the driving force behind the recording of this new album.

The album's performances were mainly recorded with the use of `vintage' equipment. This attention to detail really shows through in the sonic quality of the record. Other key contributions include singer Pete Simpson (J-Walk, Sunburst Band) and the production techniques of Rhys Adams and Lance Thomas.

Into The Depths is a soulful and organic statement. Lyrically it's the most personal work Mark Rae has recorded. Musically it's a sophisticated and mature album from one of the leading lights of the UK music scene.

      Album Description

Since releasing his debut album Satellites & Constellations, Only Child has DJ'd all over the world from Scandinavia to Australia and Moscow to L.A with the biggest and the best. His releases for Grand Central are sublimely soulful and encompass his love for DJ-ing. A typical DJ set from Only Child is a journey through futuristic funk - incorporating classic uptempo and electro breaks, deep house and hip hop. All these aspects are visibly evident in the plethora of styles that make up the Only Child sound.

His second album Solitaire features legendary soul diva Kathy Brown, `The Voice' Veba and GC's new signing Niko as well as Detroit's Amp Fiddler (who sound is a cross between Sly Stone and D'Angelo) and one half of DJ Spinna's Hip Hop group The Jigmastas, Kriminul. Like Only Child's DJ sets and GC's unmistakable sound, Solitaire is both Funky and sincere, brash and soulful, underground but accessible!

      5 out of 5 stars SOLITAIRY CONFINEMENT!!!.......2005-12-02

Coming from the Grand Central Records camp (bringing us notables such as Rae and Christian and AIM) is the outstanding producer and DJ, Only Child. This is his second outing bringing you a mix of songs that stem from house to hip-hop to funk and some serious soul brought to you a'la vocalists--and personal faves-- Amp Fiddler (Waltz of a Ghetto Fly), Veba (Spellbound, Lavish)! Songs of note are the growling, yet dreamy "U Bring Me Vibes", the 70s influenced "Addicted", the skanky scat-fest "Love's Reprise", the high-energy, gospel-esque "Fall Down", and the clubbin' "Tonite". Of course, every song on this so called "underground" release is tight as panty hoses two sizes too small--You'd just have to check out Only Child if you want to hear what I'm talkin' about!!!

5 out of 5 stars Just As Its Title Says: CLASSICS IN AMERICA.......2004-08-19

OK, so all the "great composers" maybe weren't from Austria, Germany, or Italy. This CD, right here, justifies the quite justifable elitest attitude (also known as "Patriotism"). Maybe another title, "America's Greatest Hits" might have been appropriate, but then, a dunce or two would be whining for "A Horse With No Name," so "Classics" is it. Just look at who and what is represented on these cds: George Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue" (you might remember THAT if you saw "Fantasia 2000") Leonard Bernstein conducts his own beautiful "Dances From West Side Story" (he also conducted Gershwin). There's John Phillip Sousa's "Stars And Stripes Forever," a piece of music so beautiful, so astoundingly patriotism-inducing that it'd even make a.....democrat stand up with his hand over his heart! The ubquitous (and greatly missed) Bernstein conducts Ives' "Central Park In The Dark," and "The Unanswered Question." And that's just the FIRST CD! CAN you improve on perfection? CD #2 is a resounding YES! Here's Berbstein again conducting Samuel Barber's "Adagio For String," and Aaron Copland's beautiful "Appalachin Spring." And here's where the rest of the cd hits you like an enormous amyl-nitrate rush: Seiji Ozawa conducts the San Francisco Orchestra performing William Russo's unvbelievable "Three Piece For Blues Band And Orchestra." Ozawa, the story goes, enjoyed "going out for a cold one" after orchestra rehearsals, and he was especially was fond of a local blues band, The Seigel-Schwall Band. He commissioned his composer friend, William Russo, to compose something that the Band could could perfom with the orchestra. And I know you're thinking, "OH yeah, Procol Harum Live In Edmonton, 'Conquistador,' yeah." NO: As much as I ADORE Procol Harum, there is NO comparison! The Seigel-Schwall Band was strictly a BLUES band, and Russo - whew! composed three pieces that not only altered, but definitely enhanced the Band's electric blues. Like I'm so fond of saying,"By Alteration, Enhances!" My brother is a classically trained symphonic musician, and one time - wow, 25 years ago - he was playing "Three Pieces" on my battered stereo while I was in the shower. And I couldn't WAIT to "dry off," and run screaming in the romm, "WAHT IS THAT YOU'RE PLAYING?" Trust me on this folks, you won't believe it either - and you'll thank Heaven that it's on a CD, because if it was an album, you'd wear the grroves right out by replaying it over and over. And OLD ON, it ain't finished yet: the remainder of the CD features Arthur Feilder conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra performin 3 of the fantastically-talented but almost unknown, Scott Joplin. You remember that great piano music in the movie,"The Sting?" That was Scott Joplin - and he's represented here with "The Entertainer" (I dare you to keep from tapping your right foot when you listen to this),"The Sugar Cane Rag," and the "Maple Leaf Rag." The cd closes with an undiscovered GEM, excerpts fro Joplin's opera "Tremonshia."
This is pure, undiluted AMERICAN music, people. PLEASE do yourself a favor and put down the metal, the "alt," the rapping, the country 'n western, and even my beloved Rock and Roll for
about 2 and a half hours of some of the most incredible - and not THE LEAST BIT BORING! - Classical Music. Music that AMERICA was responsible for!

This is one of the best new albums i've heard in a long time. Chilled, funky and often beautiful 'Take my drum...' will be a fond favorite amongst fans of 9Lazy9, Hint, Bonobo, NOW and the like. As a side note, Kennedy is one of a large group of talented independant musicians who frequent the discussion forum at ninjatune.net, a label that will undoubetdly be releasing some of his future work.
