Having fronted Touch Me, Cassandra Fox left to pursue a sound that really reflected who she is. It was a brave decision, and the right one on the basis of her fabulous debut single, 'Out of My Reach'. Casss Irish roots are displayed most clearly on 'Daddy Dear', a Celtic-flavored dance number that points to a troubled upbringing. For the most part Come Here moves comfortably from folk ('Save Me') to soul ('Live A Little'), while the closing song, 'Army of One', even recalls a post- dance Annie Lennox. Cass has opened for Faithless and this her debut album was produced by Rollo of Faithless as well. 12 tracks. Island.

No stranger to the realm of children's records, They Might Be Giants have seen success with their CD No! and the book-and-CD combo Bed, Bed, Bed. Their latest CD, Here Come the ABCs, offers up 25 alphabetically themed songs. However, as is their charming way, the two Johns (Flansburgh and Linnell), use the letters as merely the connective tissue, allowing them to pursuit intriguing flights of fancy that consider everything from the relative power of letters and sounds to animal hijinks. Just as they've always done, there are wistful ballads and high octane rockers. My favorite track is Fake-Believe, while my children heartily enjoy E Eats Everything. This is much more than typical children's music or corny songs about the alphabet -- it is They Might Be Giants in everyway. Blending silliness with sophistiaction is the m.o. of tmbg, and the two Johns definitely hit the mark with this dvd/cd. You and your children will come back to this over and over, you might even beg for more!

The real arms around me just faded........2006-07-27
The person who got me into The Smiths was my dad, British junkie that he is, and when he found this CD buried in a little indie record store, he was overjoyed and mystified, saying that he'd completely forgotten about this album (hmmm, now what does that tell us). So, I copied it and commenced listening.
1. A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours
Probably the best song on the album, actually. With a mock-ghostly, dramatic beginning, blossoming into a catchy and (I wince to use this word, but I must) bouncy vocal preformance. 5/5 stars
2. I Started Something I Couldn't Finish
This song is either about homosexual rape or something beyond the realms of my understanding. And what's with the gutteral growling Morrissey's been toying with? This song actually has a really good beat. 3/5
3. Death of a Disco Dancer
This is an example of what came out of Morrissey's mind late one night after downing just a few too many. A strangely artificial beginning, dry lyrics, not my favorite song on the album. 3/5
4. Girlfriend In A Coma
This one I like, despite the very un-Smiths-like sound to it. Morrissey's characteristically grim humor abounds, if looking through another person's eyes (do you really think he has a GIRLfriend?). 4/5
5. Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before
A good title, if nothing else! But also a good vocal, good lyrics (when are they not?). But Moz, who is the "shy, bald Buddhist"? 4/5
6. Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me
This song made me cry the first time I heard it, but through my tears I couldn't help but wonder who the people were, screaming in apparent agony in the backround. Oh, but I love this song. "Last night I felt real arms around me. No hope, no harm, just another false alarm." How true. 5/5
7. Unhappy Birthday
Hilarious like a sledgehammer on your head! With a mock-cocky rhythm, and cheerfully hateful lyrics, I can't help liking this. 4/5
8. Paint A Vulgar Picture
A pretty good idea lyrically, but they carry it on a bit too long. A strong dosage of reality, but not done particularly well, I must say. Except for the "dance my legs down to the knees" bit. 3/5
9. Death At One's Elbow
Oh, Morrissey and Marr, WHY? It's upbeat to the point of painful, the lyrics make little sense, and dear God was that a tambourine??? Goodbye my love indeed. 1/5
10. I Won't Share You
In my father's words, "beautiful". Well, he was never much for analyzing, but indeed it is. An acoustic is always a good way to end an album. Written for Marr, possibly? 5/5

Worst Smiths Album Ever........2006-06-01
Then you have this album. Now, I was quite a rabid fan back in the day - until I bought this album. I tried very very hard to like this album. But the dreadful, overproduced music coupled with Morrissey's obvious creative block made for some bad listening. I am thinking right now of the lyrics to "Stop Me.." and how bad they are. They actually make me cringe. Does repeating phrases 3 times in a row, 4 times in a song, compare to "Rusholme Ruffians"?
Like I said, if you are working backwards throught their catalog, you might think of this as a good album. But when I heard it, I knew it was over. I think this could only appeal to fans of Morrisseys solo stuff, which I really really can't stomach.

I personally think 'Meat is Murder' was best, but I remember listening to Strangeways very heavily in 1987, and having a complete feeling of sadness, because you knew it was over. Not because it was poor in any way, but because the mood of the record was so alone.

When Wagner set the Ring to music, he intended the orchestra to act in the fashion of a chorus from a classic Greek tragedy--setting the mood and commenting on the action. In order to allow a nonverbal musical line to reflect on the plot, Wagner developed a psychologically and musically complex symbology to communicate his thoughts to the listener. It wasn't the first time this has been tried. The famous HMV sets from the late 20's also included recorded examples of over 100 motifs. (These, by the way, are available as part of the Pearl reissue of those wonderful HMV recordings). What that set lacked was the wonderful insights as well as the approachability of the talk by Deryck Cooke. Cooke was a great and much missed musicologist - a Mahler expert responsible for the performing edition of the Tenth Symphony still most played today, a fascinating explorer into the nature of music's basic building-blocks in his excellent book, The Language of Music, and an inspiring and elucidating critic of Wagner's work as shown by the fascinating book he left unfinished at his death, I Saw the World End.
On these CDs he does much more than list the leitmotifs and identify them as calling-cards. He shows the amazingly integrated and organic growth of the musical material that Wagner uses throughout his vast work. He demonstrates how motifs can change their sense and meaning as they evolve through the drama. And he shows how the complex combinations of motifs can radically advance both the musical and the dramatic narrative of the piece. There are even places where he corrects the misinterpretation of some of the motifs that had become ingrained from early commentators' false labels.
This set should engage and enlighten anyone with an interest in Wagner's huge and inexhaustible tetralogy. Do give it a try - no matter how far down the road to Wagnerianism you are.

If all you want is dilettantish baby food, there are plenty of dumbed-down Wagner commentaries on the market, stretching from Anna Russell's famous monologue (which doesn't pretend to be anything other than a parody aimed at morons) to the latest standard-issue "Wagner-was-a-Nazi-boo-hiss" feuilleton (which, unfortunately, does). Without reasonable score-reading skill you will find Cooke useless, however diligently you have ploughed through Marx, Jung, Freud, or other gurus purportedly relevant to THE RING. Cooke expects you to use your brains and your musical sense. Quelle horreur. At today's BBC his "elitism" would render him unemployable.

Bottom line, buy this set and study it if the Ring has captivated you as it has countless others. The presentation is dry, but sticking with it brings measureless and longlasting rewards.

Getting the two most personable voices in jazz to sing an hour's worth of George Gershwin's opera Porgy & Bess (Ella doing all the female parts, Satchmo all the male) was a good idea, but not quite as great as it sounded. Armstrong savors the down-and-dirty Charlestonisms that inspired the cadences of the music and lyrics, and they fit his happy rasp like an old shoe; Fitzgerald, conversely, sounds almost prissy every time she has to sing the word "ain't," though her melodic genius gets Gershwin's bold, supple tunes over. The arrangements are full-throttle Broadway, with a few leaps into Dixieland (including some fine Armstrong trumpet solos), but the disc works best when the vocalists break character and let their jazz side out. --Douglas WolkCustomer Reviews:

Gershwin and Gershwin must be among the top composers of the last century and this opera showcases their talents more than anything I've heard. Ella and Louis are peerless as a vocal duo and though I doubt the West End performance will capture the magic in the same way they did, I still remain very keen to go see it. Is it opera or is it a jazz performance? I don't really know. I just know that I love it. And strongly recommend it.

But after its premiere in 1935, no less than Duke Ellington said, "It has grand music and a swell play, but the two didn't go together. It does not use the Negro musical idiom --- the times are here to debunk Gershwin's lampblack Negroisms."
A quarter of a century later, the producers of the film version had trouble assembling a cast. Harry Belafonte rejected their offer to play Porgy. Sidney Poitier took the part --- and wished he hadn't. Poitier later wrote that the movie insulted black people; when he chose clips of his best performances for his tribute at the American Film Institute, he picked nothing from "Porgy and Bess."
And in 1985, when Grace Bumbry was a sensation as Bess in a Metropolitan Opera production, she slammed the opera: "I thought it beneath me, I felt I had worked far too hard, that we had come far too far to have to retrogress to 1935."
All that may be. All I know is that I have, in a long life, rarely been confronted with more genius than in the Fitzgerald/Armstrong recording of "Porgy & Bess." Set aside the achievement of George and Ira Gershwin in transforming DuBose Heyward's novel into a folk opera. Let's just focus on Armstrong and Fitzgerald, who were at the peak of their popularity when this record was made in 1957.
"Summertime" --- the first song --- sets the tone. A baleful horn figure, then violins. And then Armstrong's trumpet: slow, steady, dignified. But wait --- here comes a slurred note. And a cool little improvisation. Just enough of each. Very tasty.
Fitzgerald sings a verse. She is cool and formal. A lady. Not to be taken lightly. Now it's Armstrong's turn. Tender, but let's not kid ourselves --- this is not singing as others define it. This is melodic speech: rough, gutteral. And thus he is ideally cast: His Porgy may have his charms, but he'll have to stretch to keep Bess.
And so it goes throughout the CD. Trumpet mastery --- Armstrong has dazzling control. His tone is bright, but never shrill; there's a warmth in his playing no one else could produce. And Fitzgerald is just a study in inevitability; to hear her is to wonder how anyone could sing these songs any other way.

In 1973, fed up with Bryan Ferry's domineering in Roxy Music, Eno leapt into a solo career that would find him championing the "art" in "artifice." This record is a who's who of the then-burgeoning English art-rock scene, featuring Robert Wyatt, Robert Fripp, and every member of Roxy Music except its leader (thus answering the musical question, "What if Eno had helmed the third Roxy record instead of Ferry?"). Warm Jets sports a lightheartedness that was a refreshing antidote to the pomposity of Yes and ELP on the dark side of art-rock's spectrum, with nonsensical, sound-based couplets such as "Oh headless chicken / How can those teeth stand so much kicking?" This debut is a milestone not just for Eno, but for all rocking music. Listen to Fripp's furious guitars on "Baby's On Fire" and "Blank Frank." There are more ideas on this album than in most bands' entire body of work. The nice thing, though, is that you can ignore all the word games, genre-jumping, and clever studio tricks. and just rock out.
If you are familiar with Eno's later work, know that his first two solo albums are far from ambient.

Just be mindful that Brian Eno is a "musician's musician." (If you've never heard that term before, then you DEFINATELY won't like this album.)

The music is heavy, flaky and unnerving all at the same time. The cover is all a psych experimenter would need for his/her psych experiment. He/she wouldn't even need to listen to the music. The cadences on "Cindy Tells Me" are very similar to those on "Ashes to Ashes" on Bowie's "Scary Monsters" and those on "Blank Frank" recall "Up the Hill Backwards" on the same record. Eno's stuff is more interesting in some ways though because he stands back from it a little more and so, unlike Bowie's music, it could be the plumber or the mailman on a bit of a demented, avant-garde recording spree. For Eno, it's of interest, but not of that much interest. Bowie's artiface finds everything ironic and lamentable too; it's just that he takes his observer role too seriously. This is necessary for his music to work. Eno, on the other hand, sounds like he'd rather be fishing or forming a Ponzi scheme. The ultimate manipulator has to know how to manipulate (hide) his ego too. Consequently, the rough transitions are much less jarring because the emotions have already been "synthesized" by the artist. It's like the light we see from distant stars: it happened 50 million light-years ago. There is no neurotic need to get our attention: we are not the audience, as we are for most artists. The door to Eno's loony bin has merely been left open. People "come and go" and hide their "madness in a jar." Brian just forgot to close the door, like he always does. This is a most effective approach to New Wave music because it counter-balances the up-in-your-face timeliness of the genre. Absent here is the leering face of Elvis Costello, daring you to question his choice of eyeglass frames. Brian seems ready for that tennis match with the other gay aliens. The Brits have a knack for sanitizing madness.
I didn't know New Wave was around in 1973 but I guess it was. The title could be about being peed on by hobos, which would make for an interesting take on "Driving Me Backwards," not to mention another juicy theme for the BBC. You're left to fend for yourself.
The song "Here Come the Warm Jets" must be heard in its entirety, even though it doesn't have one. So you need to hear the other songs first. The intro contains phantasmagorical bells - very nice. They are joined by a super-charged dynamo of a melody that can't be explained - you have to hear it. It is either just synthesizers or both synthesizers and guitars and the stroke of genius here is that it is a driving, powerful rock song and there are no drums! (You can't have your emotions until Oscar Wilde's incompetent ghost gives the OK, and he's presently tied up.) Just when you think you can't take it anymore, Eno introduces the drums, but they are out of sync with the melody. Pretty soon, they are where they "should" be. The heightened effect of all of this manipulation is like downing one of those Jack Kerouac apple pies with ice cream, along with a big glass of beer and a chick.
A muffled, unintelligible chorus gives the piece an understated, religious quality - like those bluegrass singers who bely the frantic fingerpicking going on around them with their monotonal droning. The contrast between the resigned tone of the voices in the chorus and the energized anticipation in the music captures the piety of true faith, in which salvation occurs when you turn in your ego. You need to listen to the other songs first for this one to work though because, on its own, it sounds kind of flaky and thin.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

This record clocks in at 40 minutes, the perfect length for an album if you ask me. It doesn't drag on and there's no song that's weak enough to tempt you to hit the "skip" button on your cd player.
The obvious comparison to the Melvins has been done and I disagree with most of the other bands people compare to Big Business. I'll chip in on this one and say that Big Business reminds me of godheadsilo minus the robotic facade.
Great band, great album....really refreshing listen.

Lords of the Underground (L.O.T.U.G., DJ Lord Jazz, Doitall, and Mr. Funkee Man) are probably one of the missed groups that came out from Newark, N.J. area. This was their debut album, "Here Come The Lords" that dropped back in '93. This album was entirely produced my Marley Marl and K-Def. This album alone has some of the most excellent production I've heard from the East Coast in a minute. Most of the production is unique and garunteed to make your head bob. When I first heard "Funky Child", I couldn't stop bobbing my head to the loud horns that K-Def and Marley Marl hooked up for this group. Other awesomly produced songs were the hit song "Chief Rocka" (I believe that's their well known song). "Keep It Underground" is also another song with great production.
As for the trio themselves, they bring many lyrics to the mic on this album, and it seems like they were having a lot of fun doing it. "Mad Skillz" shows exactly what the group has. One humorous track would be "Sleep For Dinner". The song will make you laugh but at the same time they were being serious. "Grave Digga" and "Psycho" are also standouts. DJ Lord Jazz even gets some love on the song "Lord Jazz Hit Me One Time (Make It Funky)".
As for anything bad. There isn't much at all if you ask me. One thing I found a little aggravating was the fact they kept shouting out their name throughout most of the album. Other than that, this is one excellent album from the Brick City. This album is full of East Coast flavor that has some great production. Given this, I will make an effort to check out their sophomore album "Keepers Of The Funk". This is one that I highly recommend that you listen to, because you will love it.

The album starts with the title track, which has a pretty subdued beat for this album and a yelled chorus, it's a nice introduction. "From da Bricks" is hard and bass-heavy, and Doitall and Funke speak strictly of their hometown of Newark. "Funky Child" might be the standout, an absolute standout with an awesome trumpet line. I love the beginning ("the year is 1971...") and the whole track is just crazy. "Keep It Underground" gives props to "real" MCs and disses fake ones, it has a great sax line in the hook. A cool organ beat and angry lyrics are to be found on "Check It (Remix)," and "Grave Digga" boasts a wild synth. "Lords Prayer" has a cool intro that gives to another nice track, and "Flow On" is a product of great sampling and verses. "Mad Skillz" and "Psycho" are two especially funky tracks, full of boasts and bragadagio. "Chief Rocka" has my favorite beat, with a tuba on it and another nice hook. "Sleep for Dinner" is lyrically the best song, recalling a childhood of poverty where they often went to bed without being fed ("Everyone today prob'ly knows me as Mr. Funke / but back in the day you could've called me Mr. Hungry"). "L.O.T.U.G." is another jazzy cut, and DJ Lord Jazz rips his number "Lord Jazz Hit Me One Time." The closer, "What's Goin' On," is another expertly produced track slamming the "pop" rapper.
"Here Come the Lords" is the rare album where truly great rapping meets impeccable production. A totally slept-on classic. I highly recommend it to fans of Das EFX, Black Moon, and DITC, and other similarly minded east coast rappers from the 90s. This album has never received its due attention, but it's just entertaining and totally enjoyable the whole way through.
