I'll Take The Whiskey.......2007-03-13

I've been a follower of Dale since his first Hightone album "Cheating Heart Attack" (a ripper). He's had his ups and downs since that time but has always emerged triumphant. I saw him last week in Newcastle, Australia and he was everything I had hoped for and more. He brought out his crack band, which actually plays on this disc and they are a top notch group of seasoned session pros. They might not look that good but they sure sound good. This album is another cracker of a record and carries on the tradition of hard-core honky-tonk music based on the "real" country of the 40's, 50's and 60's, not today's CMT rubbish. Keep 'em coming Dale. As an aside, I found Dale to be a true gentleman and hope that life treats him better than in the past. He has also developed into a fantastic guitarist playing that outrageous Tompkins guitar of his.

This 2006 Dale Watson release is, in my opinion, his best work yet. While Nashville and "modern suburban Country Music" continues to pollute the airwaves, Dale Watson never fails to put out quality music. This album has to rank among the finest of this decade. There are 14 songs here, and not a bad one in the bunch. Dale has one of the most distinct voices in country music, with a lot of Merle Haggard style. But his vocals on this one, harken back to the great Lefty (who Merle also imitated), while still maintaining that "no-nonsense" delivery of Dale's. I also have to say that the guitar work is fantastic....very similar and hard charging as that of the Johnny Horton sound or even Marty Stuart! A few standout tracks, including "38:21:34" and the title track "Whiskey or God". The sound and mixing are flawless. Overall, no complaints. I'm already looking for his next release. A+

This is one of my favorite CDs from Dale; it's hard to believe that some of these songs were rejected by his former record labels!

The title track, Whiskey or God, is actually very spiritual -- and a great song to boot. Like so many things today, it might not pass the 3-second test by a radio programmer -- but if you actually listen to the song, you might just discover something good and meaningful.

I'm a fan -- let's hear some more, Dale!!

At first glace, the combination of blues-roots guitarists Tab Benoit and Jimmy Thackery doesn't seem like a logical one. Both are barnstorming bandleaders, and Benoit's clipped Louisiana Telecaster would appear to be at odds with Thackery's tougher Strat attack. But, as 2002's Whiskey Store collaboration proved, the duo's strengths complement, even invigorate each other. The resulting tour is captured here, in all its volatile glory. Both headliners, along with gutsy saxist Jimmy Carpenter and dynamic B3 organist Ken Faltinson, are in smashing form. As you would expect, the studio work is expanded, extended, and juiced with additional moonshine for the live experience. Benoit's more palatable vocals dominate, and his gripping version of Otis Redding's "These Arms of Mine" is the show's most emotionally stirring performance. But blues guitar lovers aren't aboard just for the poignant moments; they want pyrotechnics, which are abundantly provided as well. From the fiery double-time explosion of a nine-minute "Bayou Boogie" to the feverish swamp funk of "Bone Pickin'" and the stealthy, slow burn of the title track, this is a breathtaking picking extravaganza offering plentiful proof of each artist's speed, dexterity and collaborative discipline. --Hal Horowitz

I saw Whiskey Store Live at Ft. Lauderdale Riverwalk Blues & Music Festival and was "blown away". Fantastic in a word. The Whiskey Store Live CD is just like being live in concert with them. The CD & music is "Smokin Hot". The CD should be in every blues lovers CD collection. Crank it up and let the music fly, you will tell all your blues lover friends to buy it.

The CD is so hot that it may burn your hands off just holding it. The guitar playing of Beniot and Thackery are just fantastic. This little known CD should be in any blues or rockers' collection. The vocals are surprisingly good and the backup is "all pro." This is one of the best live recordings I've heard in a long time. I hope they come out with more!

This is where Hank really starts coming true to form as we know him today! Family tradition was a good album but this one is great! Filled with great hits, any Hank fan will truly appreciate this album which includes Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound, O.D.'d in Denver, etc.

Vintage Hank from 1979.......2004-03-31

While Kenny Rogers (of whom I am also a huge fan) was dominating the commercial aspect of country music with songs such as The Gambler and She believes in me, Hank was doing things his way, just as he always has done since he left MGM, with his unique blend of country, rock and blues. Of course, plenty of others have blended these three, including Elvis in the fifties, but Hank's blend is very much his own.

On this album, the my favorite tracks (but not by much) are the title track, Women I've never had and a brilliant duet with Waylon Jennings, The conversation, about Hank's father. There's also a great revival of White lightning, which was written by the Big Bopper but provided George Jones with a top ten American pop hit. Hank's cover is very different from George's but I love them both. Hank also does an excellent cover of Gregg Allman's Come and go blues.

Love This Album.......2007-03-27

I bought this back when it first came out in the 70's, haven't listened to it in 20+ years. Forgot how much I liked it. Yeah, it gets silly, and the disco song is irritating . . . but that's what the SKIP button is for, right? The only problem with this CD is the low volume -- have to crank it to get a decent listen. Other than that, love it.

Average Coop Album.......2006-12-12

"Lace And Whisky" is a complete left turn for Alice. He cut his hair, assumed a 40's era gangster persona, and left the horror "shock rock" behind him. Cooper once again teams up with Ezrin, Wagner, Hunter, and Levin, but comes up with a very different album. This is not really a concept piece but the main thrust of the album seems to deal with the Alice's admission of his now well documented problems with alcohol and excess in general. Alice's album sales were beginning a real decline by this time, and even though the album sported the top 10 ballad "You And Me" it sold significantly less than it's predecessors. The album is all over the place. Alice actually does some of his hardest rock material with songs like "It's Hot Tonight", "Damned If You Do", and especially "Road Rats" (supposedly the inspiration for the movie "Roadie"). None of these are great Cooper tunes, but they do have an energy that makes them fun to listen to. The album also contains the humorous "King Of The Silver Screen" a song about a transvestite construction worker who dreams of being a movie star (only Alice could think this up). There is some throwaway filler here as well such as his cover of "Ubangi Stomp", and the disco laden "Love At Your Convenience". On the other hand the two songs that deal with his alcohol problems "Lace And Whisky" and especially the excellent "I Never Wrote Those Songs" are both strong with heartfelt poignant lyrics. Anyone who has ever gone on a drinking binge and not been able to remember what they did the night before can relate to this one. The album closer sees the first inclusion of Alice's conversion to Christianity in his lyrics with the organ filled "My God". I am not exactly sure at what point this happened but the subject would find its way more and more into Alice's work over the next 3 decades. It is a cool way to end the album and works well both musically and lyrically. "Lace And Whisky" is not an essential Alice Cooper album and is usually regarded as one of his lesser releases by fans. I think it is worth owning, but it is a very average release for the Coop.

What I admire about Alice.......2006-07-11

... is that he tries many differnt styles of music and obviously seems to have fun making all these creative and original songs and albums. Though, this is one of his weakest, it is still worth the price as some songs are just beautiful such as "It's Hot Tonight", "Lace and Whiskey" and "You and Me". Alice is incredibly talented and always keeps things interesting. Also, try the following album FROM THE INSIDE, thats far superior and absoutely flawless.

What We Are Is What We Are.......2006-05-01

What we are are hard-core Alice Cooper fans to have listened to this album in its entirety more than the one time on the day we bought it. Though backed with the best songwriters and musicians, Alice's weak and uninspired delivery drag "Maurice Escargot" through his paces throughout most of this anemic offering (think what a sober Cooper could have made of "It's Hot Tonight!"). In my humble opinion, this album, though eclectic and humorous, is one where the joke is on Alice. The great news here is the lush ballad "You and Me." Too bad they released a chopped up version as a single, even if it did chart as a Top Ten Hit. The album version features a string section that soars with over the top angst. This song is a classic, and is the bright spot on this tired yet oh so sincere Alice Cooper effort.

For his second solo album, Lanegan, the singer for the Screaming Trees, decided to go wider and deeper. The arrangements are mostly acoustic and electric guitars, bass and drums, but the subtle addition of violin and saxophone on select cuts makes for greater variance and gives the album a rich, epic scope. As always, Lanegan sees the glass as neither half-empty or half-full, just dirty. "Borracho" reaches a cathartic wall of shrieking feedback, but mostly Lanegan tunes down for the ambulatory emissions and Seattle blues of "Shooting Gallery," "Judas Touch," and "Kingdoms of Rain." --Rob O'Connor

Without a doubt, Mark Lanegan's best. .......2007-03-24

I've been a fan of Mark ever since I heard him on Mad Season's "Long Gone Day". Since then I've gotten into Screaming Trees, then bought "The Winding Sheet" from 1990, then moved up to "Bubblegum" from 2004. Both of these are great albums in their own way, particularly the former. This album takes over where the last one left off, with a more mature, full and melodic sound. Mark shows a greater vocal range than usual here, and the songs in general are very atmospheric. The extremes range from the haunting opener "The River Rise" to the powerful "Borracho". Not a weak track in the bunch really.

If you're a Screaming Trees/Mad Season fan a little hesitant to try Mark's solo music, this is the place to start. This infectious collection of songs will win you over for good. Get it now!

One of the most underrated albums of the nineties.......2006-12-04

American musical tastes have always baffled me. Mediocrities extraordinaire like Britney Spears, Linkin Park, Mariah Carey, John Mayer, and Dave Matthews sell millions of records, while genuinely talented souls like Mark Lanegan remain unknown except to music connoisseurs. A few know him as the front man and resident genius of Screaming Trees, others as a solo artist, a few more as sometimes member of Queens of the New Age, and a few Isobel Campbell fans as the guy who helped make her latest album so stunningly special. But Mark Lanegan should someone anyone who is obsessed with great music should know well. I honestly believe that if you love great music, there are at least three albums featuring Mark Lanegan that fall into the category of "Must Own": his incredible solo album WHISKEY FOR THE HOLY GHOST, the superfine Screaming Trees anthology OCEAN OF CONFUSION, and his recent effort in support of Isobel Campbell on her amazing BALLAD OF THE BROKEN SEAS (most of the songs are by Campbell, but he contributes some great supporting vocals, especially a killer version of Hank Williams's "Ramblin' Man" and on the album's great closing song "The Circus is Leaving Town").

This was Lanegan's second solo album. The first one, THE WINDING SHEET, was one downer of an album. Bleak, deeply atmospheric, introspective, and seriously unfocused, it represented a significant break from his work with the Screaming Trees. Whatever fans of that band were looking for in a Mark Lanegan solo project, that was definitely not it. WHISKEY FOR THE HOLY GHOST is not completely dissimilar from THE WINDING SHEET, but it is better conceived, the songwriting is infinitely sharper, and the melancholy is redeemed by one exquisitely melodic song after another. To this day, Lanegan has not been involved on an album--not with Screaming Trees or anyone else--that was so superb from first cut to the last.

One thing that really comes out on this album is what a low, deep voice Lanegan has. In the Screaming Trees, it is clear he pushes his voice up to its highest possible range, but here he allows it to fall into its natural, low range. Most rock bands force the singers to be high tenors, even a natural baritone like Lanegan. But as a tenor myself, I have to admit that baritones can project a world weariness and ennui that no tenor can intimate. His voice here is perfect for the regret, sadness, and angst he wants to project.

What is most amazing about this album is how great the songs are from first to last. Lanegan's songwriting with the Screaming Trees was never this consistent (one reason why the best way to get to know their music is from the generous anthology OCEAN OF CONFUSION). He would pen several gems that would sandwich some astonishingly bland cuts. No filler here, however. The contrast here is between some astonishingly great songs and songs that are at worst at least interesting (e.g., "Ride the Nightingale"). My favorite cut is probably "El Sol," filled with wonderful musical moments and a casually wonderful vocal. "Carnival" (which I keep thinking should be entitled "Freak Show") is very nearly as good, while "The River Rise," which kicks the album off, is on their par. But there are 3 or 4 other cuts very nearly as strong as these.

So, please do your part to fight the flood of mediocrity that the music industry tries to drown us with. We don't have to accept all the garbage that they tell us we ought to like! We can support great music like this instead! Do your part. If you don't already have this great album, get it. Tell your friends about it. Give it as a gift to friends. Heck, give it to enemies to placate them! Let's just not let this album remain as unknown as it currently is.

Whiskey with alot of soul .......2005-11-24

mark lanegan second solo album after the fantastic "the winding sheet" and it sort of in the same vein as that nice acoustic/blues/country songs with his remarkable voice singing with delight of subjects that i won;t go into.. but this is a beautiful well thought out finely recorded album an album which draws you in..to the man "mark lanegan" it traps you in a world
which lanegan was living at the time of writing this album as i heard some other reviewer say you can smell the smoke and whiskey when you're playing this album and i truly agree with that reviewer
if you like screaming trees you may find the departure too much.but i loved the screaming trees and i love this along with "the winding sheet" "bubblegum" his recent classic album
this is the third classic lanegan album i don't think you'll ever find a dud in his work a truly one off artist

Lanegan is awesome, is hauntingly charming is the truth only the truth and nothing but the truth, really, his folk is deligthfull and poetic, his lyrics are charged with alcohol, tobaco sadness and melancholy is hard to resist the voice of this tormented soul, the man with the cloud over his head, production on Whiskey for the Holy Ghost counts with excellent producers such as Terry Date, and remarkable musicians such as Ben Shepperd on bass guitar and Van Conner on guitar. Kingdoms of rain, Carnival, Borracho (gooood one) Dead on you and Beggars Blues are just a few of the master pieces contained on maybe his best work to date, American Folk have in Lanegan one of their best elements now that saddly iconic figures such as Johnny Cash have left us but we can trust this beautifull artform of contemporary music have yet future and way to walk , im happy for that

Most of the songs on this album are quite introspective and moody. I enjoy that kinda music. If you like the way that sounds.those words..then you may be inclined to appreciate the sounds lanegan makes with others. very soulful yet stinging in the sweetest most cruel sense of the word.

Man...has lanegan put his yearning for answers to life's never ending question marks to music so well and so expressively....enchanting.....dark, brooding and when I listen to his music I envision walking down a spiraling staircase as I pass many little black hells lit with the faded orange torch lights of his slow scorching voice...he just cuts my soul slowly and dangerously with that ol pleading voice of his. Enjoy this one...its "very real"..his genuiness..a rarity in todays music industry.

A lot of Blake fans consider "Live At McCabes" their favorite but, as good as the playing is there, for me the live guitar sound lacks warmth and "woodiness". "Whiskey Before Breakfast" is what a big old Martin steel string should sound like.

Norman doesn't play too much of this "fast stuff" anymore, but his lines still have a driving forward motion to them that make even the fastest tunes here, like "Salt Creek", sound relaxed and effortless. I always wished he'd do a fingerpicking record as I think he's underrated in that regard. "Down At Milow's House" has a parlor-classical poise to it that almost reminds me of John Renbourn. I was familiar with his duet with Bromberg on "Arkansas Traveller" first before hearing this solo version.

The overall technique of younger players and the amount of educational information on flatpicking has exploded since this record came out in the 70's. But for my money, few can touch it for pure soul.

One thing has always intrigued me: In the liner notes Nancy Blake mentions a "ebony nut" among the features of Norman's D-18. However, from the pictures on the sleeve at least, the nut on that guitar sure looks like bone or some white composite rather than ebony. I know they use ebony for violin nuts and I've seen wooden nuts on old bowlback mandolins, but I've never come across a "modern" guitar with one. I wonder if she was referring to the bridge base, which looks like it could be ebony and probably would have some impact on the tone.

I've owned this CD since high school and listen to it constantly. It was the first Blake recording I bought and I did so without having ever heard him before; I had heard my older guitarist friends say good things about him and chose this one because I was familiar with more of the tunes on it than on the other albums in the rack. This is terrific playing--clean, no-gimmick flatpicking. Absolutely a great album.

Remember vinyl LP's?? I wore out two vinyl copies of this album, and I'm one of those compulsive record geeks who cleans records each time, stores them properly, etc.

Norman Blake has a feel for traditional music, from the rousing martial-like "Under the Double Eagle" to the gentle "Ash Grove" and "The Minstrel Boy."

The only drawback to this album would be if you yourself play guitar. It'll make you weep. ("I'll never be able to do that...")

As far as the vocals go, they are absolutely in keeping with the style of the music. (Another reviewer slammed the vocals; hey, Billie Holiday's voice was raspy and annoying at times, but no one would ever say it didn't deliver the goods.)

Acoustic guitar whiz Norman Blake started off as a bluegrass prodigy in the late 1950s, and flatpicked his way across numerous albums in the 1960s and '70s, particularly as a session guitarist on albums by Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson, Joan Baez, and as frequent collaborator in John Hartford's various bands. This is one of his best-known solo records from the 'Seventies, a typically understated, flawless set of stripped-down, nostalgic old-timey acoustic numbers, with Blake playing solo and accompanied by a sympathetic secod guitar. There are plenty of Vaudeville and Southern-themed songs on here, including ditties such as "Hand Me Down My Walking Cane," "Arkansas Traveler" and "Old Gray Mare," music that the entertainment industry -- in all its areas -- had long since turned its back on. Blake breathes life back into these old standards, taking each song at his leisure while crooning in his thin, smooth old-mannish voice. For fans of great music, simply and elegantly performed, this is hard to beat. Plus, the guy's a world-class ace flatpicker -- folks who actually "get" what he's doing on guitar will be amazed.

terrific album.......2002-11-28

i don't actually own this album on cd; yet. i have the album, that i got unknowingly when i found my parents record collection in our basement a few years ago. well i finally got a turntable; today, listened to the album 2 times all the way through, and i was spellbound.

i play guitar, and when even a non-musician hears the musicianship on this album, they should be spellbound. Norman plays with this intense fortitude; as is shown on tracks such as:
'sleepy eyed joe/indian creek' and 'church st. blues'. norman blake has to be one of the most underrated guitarists in all of music.

i also love the sound of this album. it is recorded in a way that an independent album would be. there are no instruments except norman voice and his guitar(and this guitarist named charled collins). the album also has that wholesome feel; that you could just tap your feet, or sing along to it.

i would recommend this album for people who love downhome music, and traditional music. and also to people who are into traditional bluegrass guitar; believe me norman blake is one of the best, and this album proves it.

What can I say about this disc other than it is so far my best of 2007 so far. Having followed Scott "Wino" Weinrich's career since St.Vitus, The Obsessed (Wino started the Obsessed and went back to it after leaving Vitus),Place Of Skulls,& Spirit Caravan, Hidden Hand seemed like a way to start fresh, a clean slate as it were. The first three discs showed promise, and are excellent efforts to be sure. I do not want to diminish them,but when I heard The Resurrection Of Whiskey Foote,I knew Wino & the boys were on- big time. It is a total cohesive work from start to finish. This is the powerful,forceful,imaginative promise of this type of music. You'd expect it to be uncompromising,heavy,and original,which it certainly is. What I didn't expect was the beauty one finds when not anticipating it to be there. It is difficult to put it in words. I was in such awe of how it affected me,it is that good.This is intelligent music made for intelligent listeners. It effortlessly unfolds one song after the next. Just when you think you've heard the best song the next one blows you away again. There's more of the Wino influence from the St. Vitus period,and that's a good thing since that was another creative period which was cut short of further exploration. If you don't know about these other bands,this is still a great place to start. If you like metal,doom,stoner-rock,and classic metal,there's something transcendent about this work that should appeal to all.

This is a reissue of Johnny Rivers' first and second albums (At the Whiskey a Go Go and Here We a Go Go Again!). Both albums were recorded live at the Whiskey a Go Go, where Johnny and his sidemen were the "house band" at the time. Johnny Rivers may not have been the most original rocker around, but he played with an infecious enthusiasm that was quite enjoyable. It should be pointed out that all but two of the songs here are cover versions of other people's material. The two original songs here are Johnny's composition "John Lee Hooker" (mistitled "Whiskey a Go Go"), and "Walk Myself on Home" which was written by his bass player and his drummer. Although Johnny's cover versions are almost never as good as the original performers versions, the songs still have a fun, intimate, small club feel to them. Don't go looking for much originality in this CD, but if you are a fan of Johnny Rivers, you will enjoy it.

Whiskey a Go Go.......2003-06-29

I love Johnny Rivers, I was at the club back in the sixites when he performed many of these hits. The first half of the CD I thought was great. It brought back so many memories of the music that night when it was live. Towards the end of the Cd I didn't care for some of the songs. But in all I still think it's a good CD of his music to listen to.

An album you'll have fun listening to.......2003-05-20

I have had this on a record album for sooo long it will be fantastic to get it on a CD. His Memphis hit is well known, as well as Brown-Eyed Handsome Man and Lawdy Miss Clawdy. His music sparkles and the beat will get you moving. It Wouldn't Happen With Me had better get you laughing. Whether you enjoy rock, folk, country or pop, his enthusiasm and humor will grab hold of you.

Live Rivers Rocks...........2000-08-11

I'm not usually a fan of live rock performances, but Rivers club performances are much more fun and infectious than massive stadium concerts. There's not much here in the way original material. However, Johnny's treatments of Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, and even Beatles standards are a great listen!

A little goes a long way..................2000-03-03

As much as I like Johnny Rivers, (and I am a big fan), this is way too monotonous. This 2 fer was recorded before he hit his stride with "...AND I KNOW YOU WANNA DANCE" (which is still not out on CD! ). Of course the advantages of CD players is that most are programmable. This might be great for a party but it's too much of the same thing if you're listening to it on a long drive.
