Product Description

The brainchild of British guitarist Eddie Roberts, The New Mastersounds began as a sprawling funk ensemble with Parliament-Funkadelic leanings. Now they've trimmed the fat and pared down into a tight four-piece with a nasty instrumental groove. The comparisons to The Meters (and by default, early Galactic) are both obvious and valid, as Roberts and company readily admit to idolizing the pioneering soul-funk quartet from New Orleans. After a gig opening for Karl Denson (a guest on this album) in Chicago and a recently torrented High Sierra performance, Americans are starting to get hip to four of the funkiest lads from across the pond. The sound of This Is What We Do is decidedly retro, thanks to drummer Simon Allen's ability to create a sticky pocket of groove. His snare and hi-hat work overtime on the hard-bopping "Pure," with plenty of drum breaks thrown in to kept your ass moving. Organist Bob Birch oozes with soul, especially on the slinking and naughty "Afternoon at Gigi's," but he also mans the piano to unleash a cornucopia of soul in the Latin-flavored "The Tin Drum," a track that is definitely aided by the flourishes of guest percussionist Sam Bell. While Pete Shand's bass may not be revolutionary, his fingers are nimble, his lines are rock-solid, and in the case of a wicked boogaloo-style cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Ain't No Telling," Shand is the engine that moves the train. As for Roberts, he is clearly an attentive student of late 1960s funk and soul. Without ever sounding kitchy, his production truly recreates the sound of Sea Saint Studios, circa 1969. And the dude can flat-out play guitar. With one foot on the wah-wah pedal and two fingers that love staccato, his rhythms somehow seem both familiar and original, constantly tossing in those little novel hooks that this music craves. You can't get much more hook-laden than the incredibly addictive badass strut known as "The Vandenburg Suite," a sick and heavily grooving anthem that could rival any song to ever come out of the Crescent City. Roberts' ever-changing career has seen him excel at re-creating vintage sounds, but as some of the darker tracks on This Is What We Do suggest, his music has a unique and boldly soulful voice. Cuts like "The Land of Nod" seem to hint at the future for his group, a marriage of old-school funk with space-age sounds. Once Roberts feels comfortable enough to release from the comforts of the retro vibe, the comparisons to The Meters will stop, and he and his cohorts will have forged their own path. While they may not yet be masters, this band clearly has the confidence and skill to hang with the big boys, and This Is What We Do appears to only scratch the surface of their immense potential. 5 out of 5 stars I hope they keep doing what they do!.......2007-07-11

"This Is What We Do" is nothing less than a mind-blowing trip into the land of funky jazz. It swings and rocks. The ingredients include a heavy helping of soul and funk with a sprinkling of psychedelia and lounge. As with the art work, much of the music sounds like it was recorded sometime in the sixties and seventies, drawing on likes of the Meters and Howard Roberts. The production is partly responsible for the great vintage sound. The disc blends dazzling arrangements with jaw dropping solos. The melodies are catchy and toe tapping. At times, Eddie Roberts guitar work echoes Mike Bloomfield's playing with the Butterfield Blues Band. While the guitar is hot, it is keyboardist Bob Birch who seems to be in the driver's seat. Jimi Hendrix fans will have to seriously consider the possibility that this quartet recorded a better version of 'Ain't No Telling.' With Sam Bell's assistance, 'The Tin Drum' is a polyrhythmic feast. Karl Denson affirms the importance of these young turks by playing on 'You Got It All.' As if their jammin' live shows weren't enough, this album catapults the New Mastersounds into the forefront of the scene. If "This Is What We Do" is what the New Mastersounds do, I for one hope they keep doing it!

    Product Description

This is the fourth album from UK favorites The New Mastersounds. On the heels of their acclaimed 3rd studio album This Is What We Do and several tours of the US and Europe in 2005, the band was convinced a live offering was due. Recorded on multi-track in the Summer of 2005 in Menorca, Spain inside the intimate La Cova, a club situated inside a cave overlooking the Mediterranean, the band serves up a heavy dose of original funk and soul jazz numbers from each of their prior albums as well as some of the band’s favorite cover tunes, including Grant Green's "Jan Jan," the Meter's "Funky Miracle," and other jazz funk classics like "Spooky," "FireEater," and "Duffin' 'Round" with plenty of Hammond B3 grooves. Led by guitar virtuoso Eddie Roberts, this telepathically tight quintet stretches out plenty. Featuring frequent guest Sam Bell on percussion, the album highlights their broad spectrum of pure vintage sounds and the energy they bring to their live shows, no matter what corner of the globe their danceable grooves take them. Sure to be one of the best live albums you'll hear this year! ‘Live at La Cova’ will be a surefire hit with all their fans past and present - an impressive list that includes Keb Darge, Kenny Dope, Mr Scruff, Gilles Peterson, Norman Jay, DJ Shadow, Snowboy, Quantic, Richard Searling and many more groove-lovers across the globe.

5 out of 5 stars They sound as good on stage as they do in the studio.......2007-07-11

If you've been fortunate enough to see The New Mastersounds, you already know that their studio accomplishments translate well to the stage. "Live at La Cova" features the band stretching out on some originals and funk classics. This disc delivers for those who fell in love with the band's vintage studio sound. Along these lines, "Live at La Cova" feels like it was recorded in the mid-seventies with splashes of late sixties psychedelia. Eddie Roberts' guitar is as muscular as ever while Bob Birch's Hammond organ offers immediate gratification. Those who've only seen the band in the States will appreciate the addition of percussionist Sam Bell. His textures and solos bring the sound up a notch. If you're like this listener and you've played out the band's earlier albums, "Live at La Cova" makes their music fresh again thanks to explosive improvisation and a different mix. This release is as good as any in the band's discography and easily matches "This Is What We Do" and "102%." Do yourself a favor and head down to funkytown courtesy of The New Mastersounds' "Live at La Cova."

4 out of 5 stars Cool "shake your rump" vibe.......2006-08-07

Saw this band live, they were great. Solid musicianship with their own sound.

Every songs sounds similar. They have a twangy, 60's mod-funk thing going. Very danceable, very groovin! They won't be the next Dylan but they make excellent party music.

5 out of 5 stars yet another blockbuster!.......2007-07-13

The New Mastersounds have crafted another mind-blowing trip into the land of funky jazz. It swings and rocks. The ingredients for "102%" include a heavy helping of soul and funk with a sprinkling of psychedelia. As with the rest of the band's discography, much of the music sounds like it was recorded sometime in the sixties and seventies, drawing on likes of the Meters and Howard Roberts. The production is partly responsible for the great vintage sound. The disc blends dazzling arrangements with jaw dropping solos. The melodies are catchy and toe tapping. At times, Eddie Roberts guitar work echoes Mike Bloomfield's playing with the Butterfield Blues Band. As usual, Bob Birch rips things up on his organ. 'Witness' is a mind bending trip into the land of psychedelia. 'Hey Fela' pays tribute to inventor of Afrobeat. As slow songs, 'Colorado Sun' and 'Forgiveness' show the band's tender and delicate capabilities. While they had previous releases, it is "This Is What We Do" (2005) that put the New Mastersounds on the map. Considering the consistent greatness of their following albums, the group has earned the title of Kings of the New Funk. Given "Live at La Cova" (2006) and now "102%" (2007), it's clear that we can continue to expect great things from The New Mastersounds.

      Album Description

2007 studio debut from this amazing Funk band who have spearheaded the live Funk scene and have played to packed houses wherever they go. New Mstersounds, who hail from Leeds, play sweaty, dirty and raw Funk they way they used to play it in the 'old days'. Kicking off with 'Nervous', a blistering mix of brass, spitting Hammond and scratching guitar, not heard since the days when Michael Jackson sported platform shoes and his own nose. The musical template may not vary greatly, but the stand out moments are many, where the rhythmic interplay between the instruments produces an unstoppable urge to head nod, foot tap and shimmy which real funk surely should do. Vocals are supplied by Reverend Chunky who hollers impressively "JB" style, especially on "Stay on the Groove". Sulene Fleming contributes beautifully to a Marva Whitney style number, "Turn this thing around". To be ground breaking is not the aim of this music; more to satisfy the current unquenchable thirst for heavy funk, in these days of ultra conformist pop and faceless dance music. Cooker.

          4 out of 5 stars hot stuff!.......2005-07-11

The New Mastersounds explode with energy on "Be Yourself." On one hand, the band's sound is like organic acid jazz, but on the other hand it has an aged and vintage feel. The end result is music that sounds both fresh and time-tested. Their funky and danceable sound seems to draw on the likes of the Meters, Howard Roberts and Jimmy McGriff. The disc sparkles in terms of the arrangements and the solos by individual musicians. While Eddie Roberts' guitar work is hot, Bob Birch's keyboards are the real engine behind the group. The only dark cloud over "Be Yourself" is the vocals by Corinne Bailey Rae and LSK. While these two tracks distinguish the disc from the other funky jazz that's out there, it's not for the better. All in all, this quartet proves that the UK has some serious jazz musicians who are well schooled in improvisation. Although not as good as 2005's "This Is What We Do," "Be Yourself" establishes that the New Mastersounds not only know how to put on a good live show but shine in the studio.
