Hardcore Heaven.......2005-08-24
A little too buddy-buddy, but it still rocks........2005-04-29
The new Hardcore Heaven is kind of on the fence between old skool and upfront. While there is plenty of brand new, hot-of-the-press upfront Hardcore tracks, there are also plenty of (possibly new) old skool-sounding tracks. A compilation like this is meant to further Hardcore's leap into mainstream, and old skool tracks aren't gonna do it. This album is essentially trying to grab the attention of the enormous trance fanbase. Old skool is why trance fans have largely dismissed hardcore for years and years, so why the DJs insist on including it on their mixes is beyond me. This isn't exclusive to this mix, as the Bonkers series has started this crap, too (Hixxy's awful mix on Bonkers 13 was an all "OLD SKOOL KILLA KUTZ" mix... give me a fscking break... pretty embarrassing from the series of albums most responsible for putting upfront Hardcore on the map).
Anyhow, onto the mixes. Sy's mix is up first, and it actually starts off pretty decent. I'm not crazy about the opening track (Makin' Me Wanna Dance), but apparently it's a big hit overseas so I can understand why it's on here. Now the next 6 songs are great, typical Sy tracks - bass-heavy and bouncy. All good things (aside from track 7 "Hold You Tight" which has some of the worst vocals of all time). Then, out of nowhere, track 8 comes along and all hell breaks loose. What's this? A piano? Old skool is back baby! For the next several tracks, it's like taking a trip back to the mid-90s of hardcore, and it's not pretty. This is when trance fans would immediately shut off the CD player. Track 8 (Make It Bounce) is one I can live with. It's more of a cross between upfront and old skool... but after that, it's bad. Real bad. To Sy's credit, he gets back to the bouncy stuff again after his little old skool reprieve, but he would have been better off putting these at the end of the CD instead of smack in the middle where those who really dislike those types of tunes will get really turned off. Sy is an absolutely amazing DJ. His mixing is always spot-on and his scratching on this CD is just awesome. I'm normally against scratching in electronica of any type, but he does a great job on this mix and I actually enjoyed it. Grade: C+ (Mixing and scratching save it from bad tracks)
Brisk's CD is the one I had the most hope for. His mixes are usually a lot like Scott Brown's - uplifting but extremely hard. So I put it on and... I don't believe it. The first 4 songs are freaking old skool sounding tracks!? WTF!? Never in my life would I think Brisk would pull something like that. In any event, track 5 comes along and all is good. From track 5 to track 12, you'll hear what is probably the best stretch of tracks and mixing on this entire album. Scott Brown's "I'll Be Yours" and V.A.G.A.B.O.N.D.S.'s remix of "Crazy Love" are the two major highlights. Speaking of which, V.A.G.A.B.O.N.D. is featured quite a bit on this CD, which is very good. He's a major up and coming star in upfront Hardcore, and he should be one of the artists being pushed hard. There's a short jump back to old skool with "Dopest DJ" and then it's on to NuStyle (Gabba) to finish off the CD. Now, there's a lot of people who like Upfront Hardcore who don't like Gabba, but that's okay because these tracks are at the very end. If you like them, you keep listening, if not, you turn it off without being upset. Brisk's mixing is great, as usual, and once you get through the first few tracks, it's a great overall mix. Grade: B+
I really don't think I need to say much about Kevin Energy's mix. For those not familiar with current Hardcore, Kevin Energy is a major player in the world of Freeform (very fast, very hard, largely vocal-free hardcore). His mix is by far the best on the compilation because he sticks to his genre the whole way through. You know you're going to hear freeform and that's what you hear the whole way through. He wastes no time in mixing out of a song that's about to go into a breakdown (slow portion) to keep the mix bumping. Better yet is that his name isn't all over the tracklist! There are three songs he produced (out of 23) and one that he remixed. And his buddies aren't all over the tracklist either (Sharkey is in one remix and K Complex has one produced song and one remix). This means you're getting a very wide range of the genre. Plus, Kevin Energy's own tracks are some of the best on the CD without a doubt (particularly "Crescendo's of Ecstacy"). When you look at Sy's mix, there are so many Sy & Unknown tracks that it really makes you wonder how many great Hardcore tracks have been left out. Same thing on Brisk's CD (although not nearly as bad).
Kevin's CD bang all the way through, and you never feel like a song is out of place. On Sy's CD, you constantly feel like you're listening to different types of music. On KE's, you're hearing freeform through and through. Kevin's mixing is great, the only detrmiment is his love of the volume cut button, which he uses a little too much. Grade: A (Great mixing and pretty decent scratching)
Overall, this is a very good compilation. Sy's mix isn't one that will bring any new fans to Hardcore, but Sy's tracklists have never been very good. They're basically full of Quosh record label artists (Sy & Unknown's label). I mean, look at the tracklist... 8 out of 18 tracks are Sy & Unknown produced or remixed, and 2 are produced by their best buddy Seduction. Not exactly a wide variety of bouncy Hardcore, eh? If you aren't into Sy & Unknown tracks, you're pretty screwed for the album. Brisk's mix has a lot of Brisk on it, but his tracks are the upfront style that Hardcore should be promoting, whereas Sy's tracks are only enjoyed by a smaller part of the fanbase. Kevin's mix is everything a mix should be - a wide range of the genre, consistent tracks, and great mixing. Although there is a smaller audience for freeform, anyone that is even slightly curious about it will get to hear everything the genre has to offer... not just a bunch of tracks from someone's record label.
In any case, if you're a Hardcore fan you'll love this album and, if you haven't listened to Hardcore but are curious, you'll get a pretty good idea of what the genre has to offer, though I would recommend Bonkers 12 or 13 (except Hixxy's mixes) first. It's kind of cool to see how far Hardcore has come from being almost forgotten about to now having these ultra-flashy, nice-looking CD packages and DJs who are now fairly recognizable. Now, if they could just get past constantly trying to say "WE'LL NEVER FORGET OUR ROOTS", Hardcore would be totally mainstream. Change is good guys... it's not a bad thing that Old Skool is done with. Seriously, who would have ever thought a hardcore artist could make their entire living from hardcore? But Sy and Scott Brown and probably others do just that. Upfront is a good thing.
