Album Description
"Few have the touch of Bob Florence." -- JazzTimes"Bob Florence is a pianist of unequalled harmonic virtuosity, as well as a composer and arranger of both sensitivity and power. Florence brings a mystical romanticism on the one hand and a driving potency on the other ... he assembles the finest musicians in the world and they respond brilliantly as a unit and individually." -- Jazz Review
"No other big band arranger and composer does it quite like Bob Florence does. Pyramid entrances by section and by individual, suite-like compositions that pierce the air with vivid memories, dramatic context that puts the listener on the edge of his seat, humorous asides and funny titles: these are the elements that intrigue both the performing artist and the satisfied audience." -- John Gilbert
"Swinging and original-sounding music and arrangements from a multitalented musician who has been a composer, arranger, bandleader, keyboardist, accompanist, and jazz educator ... the musicians in this band are obviously here because they love it and the results do sound like it." -- Audiophile Audition
The first new recording on MAMA in years! Bob Florence is a Grammy Award winner and has received an incredible fifteen Grammy nominations in addition to two Emmy Awards. "Eternal Licks & Grooves," commissioned by ASCAP and IAJE to honor Count Basie, premiered in January 2005 at the IAJE convention in Long Beach. "Appearing in Cleveland," commissioned by the Los Angeles Jazz Institute to honor Stan Kenton, premiered in March 2004 at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles.
Customer Reviews:
More of Bob Florence's Creative Spirit.......2007-04-09
What must be commented on first are these major compositions, both 14 minutes in length. The title track which opens the CD is Bob's tribute to Count Basie, while "Appearing in Cleveland" which closes the CD, is Bob's tribute to Stan Kenton. These compositions are most interesting in that each draws on major themes from these bandleaders' respective repertoires, yet in the end come across as pure Bob Florence, hard-driving, cutting edge (but within limits), creative jazz which both surprises and satisfies the listener.
But in truth Bob's creative spirit shines throughout the CD, on two more Florence originals, "Mirror Image" and Guiding Star", as well as three standards, "Clair De Lune", "Invitation" and "I'm Old Fashioned". Bob's ability to start a chart slowly and build it to a dramatic climax while keeping the listener fully engaged on the road is unparalleled. "Invitation" is a prime example, opening with Bob's reflective piano solo, building through a series of theme statements and swinging solos to a roaring shout chorus. Something similar takes place on "Clair De Lune", and on the more gentle "Mirror Image."
Florence's Limited Edition is gifted with the best musicians possible, and they dig into the music with great spirit and drive, and also much deep feeling when needed. For the latter, check out Bob Carr on baritone sax and Bob McChesney on trombone on "Guiding Star", and Alex Isles on trombone on "Old Fashioned" which is one the most beautiful theme statements this listener has ever heard. The band's ensemble playing is impeccable with top drawer soloists such as trumpeters Larry Lunnetta, Ron Stout, Carl Saunders and Steve Huffsteter, trombonist Scott Whitfield, saxophonists Kim Richmond, Don Shelton, Jeff Driskoll, Tom Peterson and Bob Efford adding personal and powerful statements. Perhaps the star of the CD apart from the leader is guitarist Larry Koonse whose comping and solos add a slightly different but most effective color to the music. Be not afraid, Koonse is no rock `n roll guitar distorter! The rhythm section of Peter Erskine on drums and Trey Henry on bass drive these often complex charts with flair and driving swing.
"Eternal Licks" and Grooves" is a masterpiece 70 minute CD, perhaps slightly more accessible on initial listening than a couple of Bob's recent Limited Edition recordings. The recording quality is very clear and well balanced, though a little distant, so that one will have to turn up the volume to get the full dynamic impact of the music (especially the shout choruses). "Eternal Licks and Grooves" is highly recommended to listeners of modern big band jazz and will certainly be among the top three or four big band releases of 2007. For many listeners it will be at the top of the list.

It's not often that nearly four-decade-old music manages to be both seminal and cutting edge, but these 32 hits from Jamaica's--and the world's--greatest ska outfit are just that. Early ska blended R&B shuffle with mento (Jamaican calypso)--Jamaica's antic response to stateside boogie-woogie. Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, the late Tommy McCook, and the other Skatalites injected the swinging sophistication of jazz-honed chops, and this set captures the band just starting out, during their '64-'65 tenure at Coxsonne Dodd's legendary Studio One. Ska's buoyant appeal has never died, merely gone underground now and then, and it's raging at an all-time high today. Foundation Ska shows why the Skatalites still dominate. Every track's a burnished gem, and fans will get extra kicks from the band's backing turns for Bob Marley and the Wailers ("Simmer Down") and Stranger Cole and Ken Boothe's "World's Fair" duet. --Elena OumanoCustomer Reviews:
Foundation is right!.......2007-07-06
But the real bonus here is the late great genius Don Drummond's wailing trombone in "Eastern Standard Time." Why more people in the uSA aren't familiar with this is a mystery. But in either case, this is one of those happy Cds that is recommended listening after a hard day.
Skatalitesmyfire.......2007-01-10
This is an excellent collection of songs. Can't really find a single poor track on either CD. These guys somehow combine a mastery of their craft with the primeval feeling of true ska. If I was to subdivide the many flavors of ska even further, I'd say this was "Big Band Ska" - a category the Skatalites own. While I'm generally not too keen on instrumentals, this album is way too good to pass up - and with 32 songs is also a bargain. Can't imagine a lover of ANY type of ska not enjoying this... 4.5 stars.
Ska-tastic..........2006-09-01
Oh, man...this is great stuff. I've always liked ska music, mostly English Beat and General Public, but that music almost sounds contrived compared to the "real thing"...
This music has a jumpy, happy beat...I mean, if you can make the song "Exodus" into something you want to dance to, you're onto something.
I have very eclectic tastes ranging from the conventional to the obscure. To me, music has the obligation to move the soul. If the soul is happy then the feet will be happy and if the feet are happy the hips will be happy until pretty soon your happy soul will unite with your happy body and you have what we call dancing and as Nietzche said in one of his essays, "I can only believe in a God that dances..."
Well, God does dance, friends, so let the spirit/the soul within you come out to play and buy this fantastic collection. It's a little pricey for something that's over 40 years old, but it still beats a lot of the stuff that's currently "out there".
Right.......2006-01-23
Of course, the reviewer comparing them to the Bosstones was most likely just trying to stir up crap, and has succeeded. There's more than a few people doing that on here. Don't take every review as if the person was perfectly serious: I think there is great humor in such facetious posts, as long as you are able to see it for what it is.
Now for another realization. Some of the first few bands I got into were Less Than Jake and Reel Big Fish. The Bosstones were, and still are, one of my favorite bands. They are exceptional at what they do. I *also* like more traditional ska, but I've had enough with the naming of names, and trying to one-up everyone by being more 'pure' in their selection. I don't feel it's any more 'real' - it's a totally different style, for a totally different mood.
Anyway. The Skatalites are great. Goodnight.

More entertaining than Mike Young's (Chicago IL.) reviews........2005-09-23
Of particular note are Mr. Youngs reviews of -
The movie Showtime, quote: "DeNiro's best movie"
The Fleet Adult Enema Twin Pack, quote: "The two pack is an idea whose time has come."
The movie Air Bud, quote: "Disturbingly relevant in today's post 9/11 climate" (He's down with Air Bud 1 and 3 but not 2)
The Skatalites Ball of Fire album, quote: "Ska, which was primarily invented by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Operation Ivy has gotten so big that they're now going back and calling earlier bands, like the Skatalites, "Ska" as well." (read the whole review and try not to make a HUH?!?!?! face)
I urge you to take time out to peruse all of Mr. Youngs reviews, nuggets of wisdom in each and every one of them.

If the people at Nimbus are smart, they'll do a whole collection of discs on this theme. The literary-musical connection is, when done tastefully, as it is here, irresistible. As the intelligent and interesting notes maintain, "London at the time of Jane Austen was one of the most exciting centers in all of Europe for music," and this was an era of great fertility of composers in general. Lucky Jane! Imagine publishing your second novel the same year that Beethoven's Seventh Symphony receives its premiere. Or offering your fourth novel to the public near the time of the first performance of Schubert's Fifth Symphony. The program highlights popular music from Austen's time by Mendelssohn, Haydn, Fasch, J.C. Bach, Boyce, Schubert and others. I find the exclusion of chamber music a little odd here, though, since chamber music was the rage among the sort of gentlemen and women of the country about whom Austen wrote so well. --Gwendolyn FreedCustomer Reviews:

The 1996 follow-up CD to For Our Children packs less romp and more hush. Although the stellar lineup includes Celine Dion, Seal, Faith Hill, Natalie Cole, Cher, Luther Vandross, and others, For Our Children, Too is really a lullaby album and its predecessor is a party record. There are more ballads, more R&B singers, and more arrangements mired in overproduction. That said, if you want a gentler collection of songs, this might be your first choice. Seal turns in a poignant rendition of "Puff the Magic Dragon," while Natalie Cole's "Both Sides Now" shows how universal that old Joni Mitchell classic really is. James Taylor and Carly Simon's memorable hit "Mockingbird" is also featured, along with Cher doing a predictable interpretation of "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" from Cinderella. Celine gives "Brahm's Lullaby" her trademark Dion treatment and Luther Vandross turns the protest anthem "If I Had a Hammer" into a moving meditation on peace and equality. Did someone say this music might be too sophisticated for kids? Still, it's for a great cause. --Martin KellerCustomer Reviews:

The Price Club.......2005-04-28
"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

Deep Gap, North Carolina's Doc Watson is considered one of country music's most influential guitar players. Watson's blend of Appalachian folk, blues, country, gospel, and bluegrass first gained steam nationally during a 1963 Newport Folk Festival appearance, and this anthology of instrumentals begins with "Black Mountain Rag" from his self-titled debut record from the following year. Foundation borrows 16 tracks from 11 albums--nearly 35 years worth of material--from his earliest recordings for Vanguard through the '70s and '80s duets with his late son Merle (who accompanies on banjo and guitar). Doc's voice serves only as an introduction to several of the collection's live numbers, letting his strings do the talking where it counts: on cap-tipping covers of songs by John D. Loudermilk, Maybelle Carter, and Molly O'Day, and on the nearly half-dozen rags that best display Doc's trademark flat-picking frenzy. --Scott Holter--Customer Reviews:

Doc has always been THE MAN to a lot of picker's,even the top picker's today, like Tony Rice,Norman Blake,& so on,it might seem like straight picking, but try and do some of his song and you'll find out different. When I frist started playing I started out with the guitar, listing to the Stanely Brother's, then I heard Doc play, and was in awh, I did'nt no you could pick a guitar that fast and smooth. And then I heard Tony Rice play and he would start out like Doc but then take it a different level, and now today I here young picker's play, start out like Tony Rice, but take it a new level, but it all started with THE MAN (Doc Watons). Its a must bye if you dont have these recordings already in your (Library), bye this one, sit back, and listen to the picking of Doc and the picker's of today and you'll see what I'am talking about, and you will also say yes he is (THE MAN)... thanks
The best of Doc in instrumental form........2000-08-20
While all of these cuts have been previously issued, this instrumental album is a first and should not be missed by any serious Doc Watson fan. It is truly magical to hear Doc's playing through the years on this CD. While his own style is remarkably similar throughout, the variety of artists who accompany him that make the tunes quite different and varied. This CD demonstrates just how special a player Doc is.

Product Description
Recorded near the end of 2004, this is the last recording from Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Legend Johnnie Johnson. The first studio release from The Father Of Rock & Roll in ten years is also his last. After a hospital stay in August & September, Johnnie came back strong. Hale and hearty of spirit, he was in top playing form & always ready to play. You can hear his heart all through this recording, Johnnie s performance leading a band of world class St. Louis musicians through all original material. rock & roll, blues, & Johnnnie s unique hybrid of jazz, swing,& boogie woogie, laid on a foundation of blues & gospel. It is likely that Johnson knew this could be his last recorded statement. And it was a very personal project. Beach Weather is about Johnnie s life & frame of mind, Lucky Four about Johnson s fourth wife. Find Me a Woman, A Good Day, people who know Johnnie would tell you those lyrics could fit him as well. The 2 hard blues, just listen to Johnnie on em. Johnnie's was the deepest blues. The blues is at the base of everything Johnnie played. Johnnie would take you all the way home. Nobody did a turn around like Johnnie Johnson. Johnnie would make the earth move every time. All the songs on the project were a collaboration between Johnson, producer Jeff Alexander, & Rich McDonough. Mention must be given to the band. Rich McDonough is one of the finest guitar players on the scene today. His lead work through the 2 deep blues is exemplary, and his slide on Beach Weather is right on. The interplay between Johnson and McDonough through the entire recording is delightful, thrilling, and instructional. Gus Thornton's bass lines are tailor made for Johnnie Johnson, noone sounds like Gus. He is the man. And Joe Pastor is a wonderful, intuitive drummer. Listen to former Blues Brother frontman Larry Thurston sing "The Blues Don t Knock" and you may start a petition to bring him out of retirement. And Victor Johnson is another guy who should be a household name. There was a lot of feeling here. Johnnie Be Eighty. And Still Bad! Johnnie's last statement. Recorded on home turf, outside St. Louis, live in the studio, with friends.Customer Reviews:
