While many of their peers were abandoning '70s metal and arena rock to hop the punk/new wave bandwagon, Def Leppard smartly stripped the earlier era's music of its excesses, bolstered it with energetic, pop-savvy hooks and quickly found itself the vanguard of the UK's new metal revival and one of the '80s most spectacularly successful rock acts. The first disc of this 35-track, two-and-a-half hour double-disc retrospective focuses on the familiar hits of their early MTV, platinum-selling prime, though the inclusion of the video edit/remixes of "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and "Rocket" attempts to cast them in a more club-friendly contemporary groove. But the grittier second disc showcases some of the early, overlooked roots of On Through the Night and High 'N' Dry, as well as underappreciated later gems like '99's "Promises" and a power-pop-perfect take on Badfinger's "No Matter What" from an upcoming covers project. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Great vocal warmup, especially of breath control, with unique syllabic exercises!.......2007-06-17
common popular exercises have failed to achieve. The breath control exercises especially have been an enormous help, and my students find them
not only challenging but fun as well. The warmup exercises are a little unique, bringing in tweet, hweet, and unique ways to improve sound production with exercises that combine air production with compression against the lips and teeth. The exercises as a whole help students with the lower register as well as the upper, and effectively improve power without yelling. A great program, I highly recommend!

Amazon.com essential recording
This 1972 live album is a watershed recording for the Band. Recorded the previous New Year's Eve, the two-disc concert recording presents the core quintet fortified by a five-man horn section overseen by New Orleans ace Allen Toussaint, and it is capped by a guest appearance by Bob Dylan. The brass and reed players incite the group to gut it out with more unrestrained fire than these road-hardened vets were accustomed to. The lion's share of the set selections are culled from the quintet's first four studio albums; only an ebullient cover of the Marvin Gaye hit "Don't Do It," the unremarkable original "Get Up Jake," Garth Hudson's mind-boggling organ improvisation "The Genetic Method," and an absolutely piercing version of Chuck Willis's "Hang Up My Rock and Roll Shoes" spice up the reliable album selections on disc one. But Levon Helm, Rick Danko, and Richard Manuel sound like they're having so much fun singing the likes of "King Harvest," "Stage Fright," "Caledonia Mission," and "Chest Fever" that it matters not that Robbie Robertson's writing muse had already pretty much dried up. The 2001 digitally remastered reissue includes an entire second disc of previously unreleased tracks, including four with Dylan at the mic. More than four years would pass before the Robertson version of the Band would call it a day following its star-studded Last Waltz, but, as a live entity, here is where they crested. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:
The Band, one of the greatest bands!!!.......2007-07-14
Best Live Album Ever.......2007-03-31
This one's funny. I bought "Rock of Ages" as an LP back in '72 or '73, not sure which. I'd never heard of The Band; in fact I had barely begun being interested in rock music. I did something here I have done many times since (and any bookie would want a system that has worked as well as this has): the album cover intrigued me, so I bought it, not having heard a lick of anything on it, live or in the studio.
I was pretty much floored from the first listen. I'm still floored. It's playing behind me right now.
I must have sort of presumed everything I heard would be this good. My interest in rock pretty much developed, after this, with my interest in The Rolling Stones. So, after I'd heard lots of live stuff, and gone to enough concerts, and the time came to do that thing we all do and pick out The Best, the Stones' "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" was the obvious choice as Greatest Live Record. One or two other contenders have blossomed since then. But until I bought this one, again, on CD, it never seemed to be among the records I considered. There's no good reason for this. It just is. I didn't hear my first studio Band album until well over a decade after buying "Rock of Ages." Can't explain that either. But I sure memorized every note of this one.
I didn't realize that the horns were a new thing for the group; that they punched up every single cut; that the group's fervor seemed to triple with what was behind them; that the recording was pristine; that any band would want one record one-tenth this good. I just heard it, loved it, went on to other things - Stones Who Zep Dead Doors U2 Allmans etc. - and left this one all by itself as Supreme Record Experience. Not Best Live Record Ever.
Which it is. Now that I know.
The second CD has good music on it. The first is the music I'm talking about. Whew. You will never - you probably never did - hear The Band sound better. This is called rising to the occasion. Someone once said that a traveler should not visit Alaska while still young, because it dulls one's capacity for enjoyment to see the finest first.
Maybe that was my problem. Not that I feel dulled or anything. But I heard this first. And it's still the finest.
Best of the Best.......2007-02-25
Band's best live album.......2007-01-12
The album kicks off with the definitive version of perhaps The Band's most famous cover, "Don't Do It." It's funky, energetic and a classic reading of a tune first made famous by Marvin Gaye. Another live first on this album is the addition of a horn section (featured on Cahoots). They sound great on "Don't Do It," but although Allen Toussaint's horn arrangements have been the object of much fan praise, I could honestly do without them on most of The Band's classics. It sounded like the group (especially Robbie Robertson) was really looking to add something extra to their sound. I, on the other hand, love the boys just the way they already sounded! The horns don't get in the way, but they don't really add anything momentous either.
The Band is in fine form on this collection, with each member shining in alternate moments. Robbie's guitar is wicked--it cuts and lifts the energy of songs like an electric razor. Garth Hudson's "Genetic Method" organ improvisation is one bonus of hearing their music live--he truly is a virtuoso, ad libbing some sweet keys and quoting recognizable snippets from several genres of music. Richard Manuel shines on is classics, "King Harvest," "The Shape I'm In," and "I Shall Be Released." His voice has so much uniqueness that every different version of a song has its own idiosyncrasies. Another track you'll get with this album is "Get Up Jake," which was the only way to get it for years. Also included are a couple classic rock and rollers, "Loving You Is Sweeter than Ever" and "I Don't Wanna Hang Up My Rock and Roll Shoes." The Band sounds like they're enjoying themselves to death while playing, and it's hard not to get caught up in it.
This release also boasts quite a number of bonus tracks, some of which are essential and others a bit disappointing. It's awesome to hear such rare nuggets as "The Rumor," and "Time To Kill," as well as "Up On Cripple Creek," which wasn't originally included on the album. The tracks with Dylan at the end, though, are a little lackluster. Dylan, famous for not wanting to rehearse with his bands, sounds unprepared (he even fudges the lyrics on "Like A Rolling Stone" for goodness sake!), and the backing is a bit ragged.
Overall, this is a very worthwhile live album, and although few of the live takes make the studio versions obsolete (except maybe the gnarly "W.S. Walcott Medicine Show," in which the horn section cheers on Garth Hudson's all-out sax solo), it's a great supplement to the absolutely essential studio albums of The Band.
Classic live album.......2006-09-30
I have to say, I think most of the goodies are on disc 1. Only a couple of the Band numbers on disc 2 strike me as really good (though none are bad). Furthermore, the Dylan stuff actually is kind of bad IMO--Dylan isn't singing all that well (though he's undoubtedly enthusiastic), and The Band isn't playing as well on those tunes as they did on their own stuff, either. Dylan fans may react with outrage, but that's how I hear it. Frankly, disc 2 mostly tells me how intelligently the original double vinyl album was selected and sequenced for its initial release--they really did get it pretty much right the first time, nabbing most of the best stuff on the first try. More isn't always better.
Even though I can take or leave the second disc (I suspect I'll mostly be leaving it), this CD is worth five stars just for the classic original record captured on disc 1.

Just as adult authors from Isabel Allende to Clive Barker are writing kids' books these days, rock & roll artists (remember Jerry Garcia and David Grisman's 1993 recording Not for Kids Only?) are reaching out to the younger set. Thank goodness, we say... and scoot over, Barney. Festival Five Records is the children's music label founded by Dan Zanes, former lead singer of the Del Fuegos, where he hopes to capture "the sound of a neighborhood band on the front stoop playing tunes after dinner for a family dance." His third CD release, Night Time! ("a musical cool-down disc for all ages underground"), comes on the heels of Rocket Ship Beach and Family Dance. Here, traditional tunes such as the West Indian sea shanty "Pay Me My Money Down" and the African American folk song "Down by the Riverside" take their place next to folksy, hypnotic Zanes originals, including "Night Owl," "Firefly," and "Linger for Awhile," a song aimed to reflect Brooklyn stoop life. Mandolins, harmonicas, trombones, fiddles, electric guitars (and more!) add to the contagious buoyancy of this eclectic 16-track CD. Our favorite is "Rattlin' Bog," a delightfully nonsensical cumulative song, led by Father Goose and featuring the kids in the Dandelion Chorus. As in his other CDs, Zanes invites friends and family to join the fun, along with heavy-hitters such as Aimee Mann, Lou Reed, and Dar Williams. This irresistible collection, appealing to toddlers and easy on their parents, is packaged in a colorful board book illustrated by Donald Saaf with starry scenes of moonlit music making. An excellent addition to any children's music library. --Karin SnelsonCustomer Reviews:

Product Description
This CD is pirate pop and buccaneer rock for scallywaggs of all ages. Shiver your timbers with a fanciful blend of scurvy sing-alongs and sea chanteys. Includes songs such as: Age of Buccaneers, I'm a Pirate, and What It's Really Like on a Ship.Amazon.com
Pirate-themed kids' discs have been done before, and they generally fall into the same musical black hole that swallows up other such single-minded projects (think railroad yard music for 4-year-old train buffs, monster records and the occasional daring clown-themed disc). Pegleg Tango makes itself the exception--the treasure chest at the end of a rough voyage--and here's why: Captain Bogg, First Mate McGraw, Charlie Scuppers, and the eye-patch-wearing, plundering brigade of others who populate this disc seem to have been actual pirates before they were kids' artists. "Pieces of 8ight" is served up with enough salt to sink an iceberg, and "What it's Really Like on a Ship" invites scallywags of all ages aboard for a scurvy-skirting adventure. Some surf music washes up, a little reggae reaches the shore, and the occasional mermaid sighting is celebrated with skull-and-cross-bones-style pop harmonizing (imagine a cast of Broadway crooners cutting up with parrots on their shoulders). Bogg & Salty's crew effectively capture Captain Jack Sparrow's swagger and set it to sound; there's not a musical deck-swabber among them. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:
