Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A "mixed" bag of treats for GU fans.......2007-07-22

GUMixed is a mixed (pardon the pun) bag, no doubt about it.
Following (and inspired by) GU's successful GU10 comes a nicely packaged three disc (or four, depending on whether you buy the limited edition) mix of unreleased/exclusive tracks and an '88-'95 retrospective, which is all well and good and certainly unique, but not without a few caveats.

The first disc begins very, very strongly with `An Evening With Bobi Bros' by Trentmoller & DJ Tom > Tenaglia's Island Groove Remix of `Dibiza' > `Lovin' (Your Body Remix) by Funk D'Void. In fact, the first CD is peppered with a quantity of really decent tracks - some stand-outs include `Shake It' and `Mal Funktion' - but the problem is that equally as many just don't hold water by comparison, leaving mixed impressions at the disc's closure. `SheShi Lounging' and `The Operatah' were a bit too disco-house for my tastes and didn't seem to fit in; the same goes for `Manga' and the downright weird `Razorblade.' Disc one ends as strongly as it began, however, with Bent's `Waiting For You' and UNKLE's `Burn My Shadow' (remixed by Junkie XL). Make no mistake, there really aren't any `bad' tracks on this disc, but a couple of tracks would have been better off omitted.

I can't quite understand where the GU marketing department came up with "Two discs full of exclusive and unreleased music," as disc two's opener `Azure (Part 1)' has appeared on other mixes as well - but so much the better, as it is a decent track. `School Of Thought' brings some nice sexy progressive trance to the table, but is followed by the disappointingly short `Warm Milk,' clocking in at a mere 1:14, and `Female,' which sounds as if it should have been included on the third disc rather than amongst the exclusive tracks. There are plenty of moments of saving grace on disc two, just like disc one, to make up for some mismatched tracks. Stel performs an earthy remix of Trafik's `Indestructible' which expands into a surprisingly hard-hitting number by its end. `Big Booms Bigger Tunes' > `Xcellr8' > `Mexico Can Wait' continue this theme that is abruptly halted by `Winter,' which is haunting and melodic, as is `Saturn.' The problem is, again, that these tracks seem woefully out of place even though they are quite enjoyable. Disc two ultimately redeems itself, as does disc one, with a series of fantastic tracks by Jim Rivers (`Black Box'), Gabriel & Dresden Ft. Jan Burton (`New Path' remixed by Jim Rivers) and Paul Hartnoll (`Patchwork Guilt'). Again, there are no truly harsh tracks present but the inconsistency is paramount.

Which brings us to disc three - the 1988-1995 retrospective of early house/acid-house tracks. I definitely dig this disc because it makes GUMixed a fairly unique and complete package and features songs by long-ago EDM pioneers including Lost Tribe, West Bam, Doi-Oing, Creative Thieves (Sasha performs a remix of their track) and Members Of The House, to name but a few. For a retrospective disc, disc three offers a lot and asks very little in the way of patience with aged tracks.

For the collectors out there who purchase the limited edition with the fourth, unmixed CD, let me be succinct: It is as decent as any of the other discs, but the extra $10 added to the price does not justify its inclusion. I think GU should have followed in the footsteps of GUMixed's predecessor, GU10, and made this a standardized four-disc collection rather than making the unmixed disc optional. It serves its purpose well for those who mix their own music, indeed, but it isn't *that* great.

Overall, GUMixed is a mixed bag of treats with some easily overlooked abrasions in the track sequences. I do think that I like this package better than GU10 because of the exclusivity of many of the tracks plus the retrospective third disc.
Disc 1 - 3.5/5 * Disc 2 - 3.5/5
Disc 3 - 4.0/5 * Disc 4 - 3.0/5
Overall, a strong 3.5, and overall a quality release.

    Album Description

Set amid the chaos of pre-revolutionary China, small time thief, Sing, aspires to be one of the sophisticated and ruthless Axe Gang whose underworld activities overshadow the city. Stumbling across a crowded apartment complex aptly known as "Pig Sty Alley," Sing attempts to extort money from one of the ordinary locals, but the neighbors are not what they appear. Sing's comical attempts at intimidation inadvertently attract the Axe Gang into the fray, setting off a chain of events that brings the two disparate worlds face-to-face.

The exotic original score by Raymond Wong is complemented by the film's classical pieces, notably Sarasate's acclaimed "Zigeunerweisen" and Khachaturian's famous "Sabre Dance."

5 out of 5 stars What about the dialogue?.......2006-04-08

I have a question about the dialogue on this CD... is it interspersed on separate tracks between songs, or do they talk during the songs?

    5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!!.......2005-10-21

As a Chinese, I love this soundtrack and the movie very much! There is no more I can say. However, it's a good soundtrack and I love it very much.

4 out of 5 stars great CD, but incomplete..........2005-09-20

This is the soundtrack released to the U.S. Just so you know, the soundtrack sold in Asia features a few more songs. Most notably missing is a song preformed by Huang Sheng Yi, called "Zhi Yao Wei Ni Huo Yi Tian" which comes toward the end of the movie. It might be my favorite song in the movie, and it's too bad it's missing from the U.S. soundtrack.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Soundtrack.......2005-08-20

If you have seen this unbelievable movie, then you know how incredible the music is. It matches the mood of the movie and everything the previous reviewer said I agree with. It has great sweeping scores with an extremely cool "oriental/chinese" sound and presence to it. I mostly bought it for a few cool songs I fell in love with when I saw the movie and the whole album is great. You will recognize a few of the songs used in a lot of other chop socky/martial arts movies and you'll really enjoy having them along with all the other great music on this soundtrack and it goes without saying, but if you haven't seen or bought this movie yet, get it. We need to encourage Stephen Chow and support him in his endeavors to make more great movies instead of the same old rehashed formulaic, cookie cutter, boring(need I go on?)"Hollywood Entertainment" fare.

5 out of 5 stars There comes a time when you find a soundtrack that's..........2005-06-14

    ...Absolutely perfect!

As a collector of various movie soundtracks, there are many times when I am utterly dismayed by how unrelated they are to the movies they are supposed to complement.

The Kung Fu Hustle CD, however, is far from any of that! I watched this movie four times in the theater, and every time, the music just mesmerized me from start to finish! The movie was great, and the music was even better!

I quickly ordered the soundtrack from Amazon.com, and when it arrived, I was far from disappointed. This CD is fantastic! It does not leave anything out. What you hear in the movie is what you hear in the CD from beginning to end. The tracks are even in order of which they appear in the movie!

If you enjoyed Kung Fu Hustle, then the soundtrack is definitely for you. Go forth! Purchase the soundtrack, and prepare to be pleasantly entertained by the delightful music!

    3 out of 5 stars pretty good.......2006-10-16

Decent although I agree that the harp is often covered up, especially in the Introduction and Allergo. I play the harp and I often find myself bored with the lack of musicality. Ms. Kondonassis is a fantastic technical harpist; however, I'd recommend Nancy Allen's recordings for her artistry.

5 out of 5 stars Rich, lush and incredibly pleasing........2001-10-31

I found the recording to be both rich and multi-faceted. It is incredibly beautiful...you can't help but be amazed at the artistry...and just envelopes you in liquid sound. Often the harp is overpowered when set against other instruments and/or orchestras (the Four Seasons recording, beautiful though it undoubtedly is, is a good case in point). In this CD, however, everything comes together in perfection. My overall impression of this recording is like being wrapped in silk and velvet: lush, sensuous, wallowingly comfortable and ultimately relaxing.

Ya know its a hard life when no one can understand why you want to listen to what appears to be cats on heat. "No, its Chinese opera", you cry, "its really good". Then you're just faced with looks of disbelief and confusion. They might question your sanity too. But as for me, I adore it. And I adore annoying everyone else within hearing range as well. I was introduced to Chinese opera through viewing the excellent film 'Farewell My Concubine' (right your task for today is to hunt out that dvd and buy it!). I don't think it is necessary to have purchased Chinese opera volume 1 to fully enjoy the volume presented here. The cd booklet does not contain any lyrics or translation but it does contain information concerning the opera, giving a brief storyline with each song. The operas themselves are taken from different regions of china and are fairly distinctive in style. There aren't many Dana (male) solos, which is a shame, but the exquisite female vocalization redeems that negative factor completely. These incredibly talented women (in my personal opinion) harmonize their voices with the string instruments, going up and down accordingly while maintaining perfect key. It is definitely an acquired style so I suggest listening to the samples offered above before purchasing. It sounds very strange indeed to unaccustomed ears, and at first I could only experience it in small doses. Now I play it all the time. Whether I'm cleaning, cooking or just relaxing it's a perfect compliment to my tasks and is very cheerful, except for the last song. It almost sounds like she's weeping at the beginning. So, if you're still with me after all that and have managed to experience some form of Chinese opera in the past and enjoyed it, get this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Exotic.......1999-12-16

This is a great introductory CD for Chinese opera. The selections on this disc are great and very interesting to say the least. However I think that you should have heard some kind of Chinese opera before you even think of buying this. Most people either love or hate Chinese opera; i've yet to encounter someone who doesn't have a strong view on it. I myself love Chinese opera, but most of my friends hate it. This CD is, to me, a jewel, although i gave it 4 stars rather than 5 because some of the tracks drag on a bit. Otherwise a wonderful CD!
