Album Description

The Jamaican record label, Kariang, linked up to have their artists collaborate on a different kind of album...one which sends a positive message about unity and culture through lyrics, music and sounds. It touches the very roots of the Caribbean heartbeat. Much of the music is African village drum oriented, and the mix is as hard as any dancehall riddim out there. Producer/DJ, Yossi Fine has toured the world spinning as the Ex-centric Sound System, perfecting the songs and sounds of this recording....these songs are the Afro-Riddims. Produced by Yossi Fine @ King Solomon's Yard & Kariang Studies, Jamaica, WI. Features Anthony B, Brezident Brown plus others.

i'v seen the band last summer ,live in detroit,it was the music i allways wanted to get,but couldn't find, its funky , it has dub in it, did i say africa?,this is the band that made me love african music, this is my generation,{i'm 26}where drum&bass, dancehall, hiphop, and africa, are all coming together, positive, the bass player{yossi fine}is amazing,i'v never seen anybody playes like that,if i could recomend a cd to start up your morning,"WEST NILE FUNK"is it

4 out of 5 stars 'Feel the bass in your body' - and boy, do you........2004-08-30

The former bassist for David Bowie, Lou Reed and Ngegocello wants you to 'feel the bass in your body' - and boy, do you: WEST NILE FUNK is modern African-rooted drum and bass at its hardest - joined by Ghanian musicians and an African tinge which remains more European Afro-funk than actual African.
This is the band's second full-length release and is meant for modern world dance floors - and for people who think most world funk is too light on the beat or too soft on African.
It would be even more fitting to view this band live, when dancers are added - but as WEST NILE FUNK is only a cd, take it on the tempo alone: it takes the fast dancing of general African music, erases the hiphop elements which don't fit, and turns up the amp and volume a notch.
WEST NILE FUNK is everything west of the Nile, from West Africa to Caribbean influences: it's not as beefed-up bass as modern drum n bass listeners are used to, but it makes up for the tone down in a complexity most drum and bass dance collections lack.
Not recommended for sit-down listening: WEST NILE FUNK is dance floor beat at its best.

The brainchild of bassist Yossi Fine, who's worked with Gil Evans, Lou Reed, and Naughty by Nature, among others, Ex-Centric Sound System is a band that mixes authentic African sounds with dub, techno, and hip-hop. While they work in the same general area as Transglobal Underground, Afro Celt Sound System, and similar bands, it's the density of their sound that sets them apart. Instead of songs, they use real instruments, samples, hip-hop beats, and studio manipulation to create soundscapes that draw listeners in and take them on a journey. It's especially effective on the epic "Kokobi," which incorporates an Ethiopian church choir, Ugandan guitar, and Arab percussion--a veritable pan-African kitchen sink--to make its point. There's adventure in the music, which always remains dance-floor-friendly and heavy on the bass, and the flights of consciousness characterize dub old and new. A triumph of the collective imagination. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars Love It Love It.......2001-05-31

I first saw this group less than a week ago. They were absolutley great! I really enjoyed the performannce. Nana and Adevo were super on the African drums. Yossi, on the bass, really kept the groove all night. Michael, on the drums, played hard all night. If they are in your area, please make an effort to see them. They will be worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars talk about a strange brew..........2000-11-17

A friend of mine used to joke that his hometown of Bloomfield NJ was where "Italy meets Africa in America." Well, this CD is what happens when Israel meets Ghana in in a Tel Aviv recording studio. (Israel meets Ghana in a lot of Tel Aviv restaurant kitchens these days, but that's another story.) What comes out is a kind of techno dub with the traditional West African percussion providing both rhythmic propulsion and a human touch. The sampling sources are extremely diverse and masterfully interwoven into the soundscapes. Some of the tracks are anchored in traditional Ga and Fanti folk tunes ("Agbae")justifying the Sankofa visual proverb (retrieve the past to move forward) used as the band's logo. Among my favorinte tracks: "Lullaby" and "Kokobi." Nana Dadzie's suit of Ghana independence 40th anniversary cloth in the liner photo gets them that last star.

5 out of 5 stars Wicked Wicked VoodooLand.......2000-09-02

I am a music buyer for a major music chain and hope this will give my opinion sum value. This is the best Dub/World/Hip Hop group I have ever heard. The music is consistent and doesn't sound like a compilation, like most others in this genre. The bass playing is the drive and groove of the music, and man is he wicked. I want to be just like him. If they are touring in the USA I have got to see them. dysarta@hastings-ent.com

5 out of 5 stars woooooooow!!!!.......2000-08-04

The Excentrics, Yossi Fine, Nana Dazi and crew, have been working in Israel and recently showing in the US for about 4-5 years already, and are one of the best dub groups out there. Yossi Fine is one of the greatest bass players in the world, with a unique sound that's bound to get you hooked, and the rythem section of the group (the Israeli drummer and the three percussion players from Ghana) is simply amazing. The group delivers a blend of dub, african music, funk, electronic music (Yossi Fine's also a DJ) & hip-hop, and whatever kind of music this is, this group is best one making this kind of music _anywhere_. Best grooves you'll ever hear, amazing energy, trust someone who's seen their show over & over again and was amazed each single time. GET THIS!
