Product Description
Technology that powers the world is supposed to be stable and not to fail. But every machine is programmed or operated by a human, whose single mistake can lead into crash. Furthermore, beware of the accidents that happen, which may cause serious damage to a power computer, will it be either a software problem or brutal physical damage. And, in fact, the more complex the technology becomes, the threat of unexpected damage rises.

However, broken machines could work, and here is the example: Displaced is the second album for Cocoon by Jacek Sienkiewicz, Warsaw-based 27-year old producer and fierce live performer, also running his own label Recognition. This is an exceptional record: made by Jacek after moving from his native Warsaw to more quiet and conservative Krakow, using, among others, a badly crashed laptop computer, virtually high on emotion. One can find all his trademark elements here - madly driving techno beats, overwhelming melodies and weird vocal snippets, but the result is more dancefloor-friendly as well as more experimental at a time, a rare achievement in today's formalized world of club music. The music formerly known as Techno is not dead, as many say... It's just somewhere else. And that's where it is.

5 out of 5 stars The most exciting jazz pianist to burst on the scene since Jean-Michel Pilc.......2007-06-06

Quite a statement, but just listen to this spectacular piano trio disc and I think you'll agree.

What's he sound like? Dave Brubeck meets The Bad Plus, with a little Vince Guaraldi and Brad Mehldau thrown in--and a big helping of Frank Kimbrough. He's got that metronomic intensity of Brubeck ("How Do We Catch Up?") combined with the controlled bombast of The Bad Plus ("Little Secrets") filtered through the hard-headed romanticism of Mehldau ("Displaced"). But the Kimbrough vibe shines brightest. Who knows if he's ever heard him? Probably unlikely, but the wacky waltz, "Pair of Teeth," literally reeks with a "Frank-ish" vibe. "She Eats Flies" and "Degree in Intuition" sound like updated and tweaked Guaraldi. With "That's My Space" we're back to Brubeck territory. "Kenny Two Steps" sounds a little like a Dave King tune with its bombastic drive and off-kilter concept. "Mourn," a dolorous solo musing, evokes a more virtuoso Randy Newman. "Pillar to Post" has a jaunty-bloozy Jacky Terrasson-like sensibility, and with "Taller Than Me" we're back in Kimbrough territory.

Forgive me if this sounds rather like an indigestible stew; in reality, it's all very attractive, with smart arranging and magical group conversation consistently shining through, all the while guided by the leader's sure compositional sense and monster chops judiciously deployed. The disc closes with a remix of "How Do We Catch Up" featuring some very attractive electronics. It would be very interesting to hear an entire disc by this group employing such an approach.

In any case, this is a debut of monster proportions. DO NOT MISS IT!

This guy is definitely one to watch out for. Part of Sven Vath's revered Cocoon stable, this guy is right up there with the likes of Michael Mayer, Reinhard Voight, Steve Bug, Ricardo Villalobos and others. The album is a collection of minimal techno tracks with incrediby detailed production. Tracks progress subtly, introducing element after element of bleepiness, quirkiness, Detroit string action, and many more. Standouts are "Dream Machine". "Displaced" and "Chrome Goodies" but the album in it's entirety isa work of art.

This 1999 CD is described on Terami's website as "gentle anthems for the displaced, misguided and dysfunctional". Recorded in her bedroom over a rainy three-day weekend, this is an amazing collection of lo-fi, confessional piano songs which will take your breath away with its melodic honesty.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Inconsistent, and works more as masterfull stepping stones.......1999-04-06

For my money the only good pieces here are the "Passacaglia" and "Battle Piece". In the "Passacgalia" Wolpe's aesthetic strategy was to merely create an incessant unfolding of various intervals collected in each self-contain section or for each comment on the main passacgalia idea. The overwhelming power comes through slowly in an accumulative like argument. As a performer you really need to have a global vision of this unfolding otherwise you will dilute the on-going forward moving momentum. You need to set yourself almost like a slow lugubrious locomotive pulling and puffing itself out of the station. Madge doesn't quite get it, and I found some expressive holes here where the momentum became dissapated. The work has a gruff, unrelenting roaring power, and if you loose this gestural quality you never get it back. I am prejudiced in hearing the early David Tudor recording from the late Fifties. Tudor created a seamless one-dimensional gesture without ever allowing the piece to slow or dilute its impassioned momentum. The "Battle Piece" as well is a work that should literally make you shake. John Cage said this at an early performance of it in New York. Here Madge gets the idea more comprehensively. Wolpe's creativity was inconsistent. He began profoundly, but then saw his work as an odyssey creating sketch-like works.

5 out of 5 stars vava blitzstein.......2000-01-11

This CD is just.....so....fine. Nothing more to say, because it couldn't be better than it is. Blitzstein is a wonderful composer, and the performances are great, especially the bariton, Mr. Sharp. He never oversings, vibrato never gets out of hand, he's always down the center of the note in tune. His voice is lush, and it satisfies.

From what I can tell, Blitzstein is a great composer who was deliberately marginalized. A movie has just been released about him entitled The Cradle Will Rock, but it hasn't got to the midwest yet. Now that I've heard this recording, I can't wait to see the movie. Maybe Blitzstein's day has come.

5 out of 5 stars One terrific CD that will please you over and over!.......1999-10-30

Might actually be Adrian Shaw's best solo work so far. Shaw apparently plays all instruments on 'Displaced Person' - guitar, bass, organ and drums with the exception of a few guest spots by two fellow Bevis Frond members Nick Saloman and Bari Watts. Tracks that make this CD a keeper are the jamming "What If", "The Only One", the psychedelic "Preoccupied", "Stalking Horse" (a bit more progressive than I had expected), "Placebo" and the eight-minute "One Last Drink For The Band" (possibly the cut of this entire disc). Well worth checking out.
