The people who felt betrayed when Linda Eder covered several pop songs on 2002's Gold will be relieved that her follow-up, Broadway My Way, is a return to the Great White Way. As if to prove that she isn't limited to either the songs of Frank Wildhorn or ballads, Eder tackles some well-known show tunes. The ballads tend to be overwrought, so it's best to look for the uptempo numbers. The singer's take on "Some People" is technically fine but so va-va-voom showbiz that it lacks the deranged edge that makes the song so compellingly dramatic. Things work a lot better on "I Am What I Am": while Eder doesn't take it to the top (or rather over the top), this is as close as she gets to Mermanizing a number. Elsewhere, "Don't Rain on My Parade" (immortalized by Streisand) and "Man of La Mancha" are appropriately brassy and triumphant, with Eder roaring her way through both songs. Fans of both Eder and Wildhorn should note that the singer reprises her Svengali's "Gold," the title track from her previous album, and an excerpt from his long-in-the-works Camille Claudel. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Linda Eder - Great Voice.......2007-07-06

This lady has one great voice. She can certainly sell a song. My only reservation about her is that she's a bit cocky. I think she could use some humility.

5 out of 5 stars Not a voice.......an instrument.......2007-02-17

Unbelievable breath control, phrasing, and style. My 10 yr. old Granddaughter who heretofore has listened and loved the usual rap
and hip-hop, heard me playing this disc and begged me to buy her
one........and I did, and she plays it all the time, and to her
friends. Linda Eder exceeds the Streisand mystique by far.

5 out of 5 stars the best female singer of the great american standards........2006-07-24

i am turning 60 years old this year. i went to my 1st.broadway
musical in 1960. over the years i have had the honor to see
almost all of the giants of american song, garland, streisand,
patti lupone, lena horne, betty buckley, barbaracook etc. in
"broadway, my way" linda eder cements her place as the best of the best. from an anthem like "i am what i am" to the lovely
"on the street where you live" captures you body and soul.
i loved this album, and don't ever miss a chance to see her live. JOHN POWER

5 out of 5 stars The powerful and beautiful voice of Linda Elder.......2006-02-23

A great selection of songs. Tremendous amount of energy in Linda's voice. I just love it.

5 out of 5 stars Linda Eder shines with her Broadway album.......2006-02-18

Wow! Linda Eder has an outstanding voice. She sells Broadway in the styles of Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand. After hearing this you will want more.

5 out of 5 stars Very well thought out compilation.......2007-07-22

I am a fan of most of the Hip-O Gold series compilations and this is one of the best and the best 70s compilation out there. Many compilations try to stick with one record label or use cheaper "live" recordings... this compilations chooses some of the best represtations of some of the best artists of the 70s.

This album differs from some of the other Hip-O compilations by not going in cronological order. The reason for this I believe is there were many different styles of music in the 70s and if you go in order this would not flow well. They group all the music by the style of music so you don't have classic rock mixed in with disco.

Some people will look at a compilation and notice there favorite artist isn't here. Well the way I look at all compilations is I usually have albums or best ofs already of my favorite artists so it never really bothers me.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-06-15

This is a great CD to listen to. The minute it arrived at my house I couldn't wait to listen to the songs that I most wanted to hear--"Boys Are Back in Town", "Hello It's Me" and "All Right".
Todd Rundgren's song kept echoing in my head and I was telling myself not to get it now. But I had to feed into my conscious and get it. And I am enjoying it already.
There are songs that I have heard but never knew who sang them. This is a good compilation of songs selected.

5 out of 5 stars HeeBeeGeeBees!.......2007-04-28

All right. Any collection of 70s pop music that doesn't include the Bee Gees is asking for trouble. I wouldn't say steer clear of this particular little collection, but it does tend to make one suspicious.

5 out of 5 stars nice old tunes.......2006-11-11

as with all music, the beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. and as such, this cd has some good and some not so good. the good is really good and the not is just stuff i didn't like. it is a worthy purchase though as it takes you down that road (wherever it may be!) to old memories and good times.
you will enjoy it. i sure did.

4 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...Fun Collection of '70s Biggest Hits.......2006-09-15

From new wave (The Cars, Blondie) to disco (Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor) and Southern rock (Lynyrd Skynyrd) to funk (Earth, Wind & Fire, The Commodores), Hip-O's 40-track collection is packed with some of the biggest hits of the era.

Not only did the decade provide a variety of musical styles, the way music was presented to the public was changing, too. The once dominant Top 40 AM radio gave way to FM stations and AOR formats. As such you get a mixed bag of LP versions (for example, the 5:14 version of "She's Gone" and the 5:59 version of "I'm Not in Love) along with radio edits ("Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" is cut from 4:33 to 3:18 and "Blinded by the Light" is nearly cut in half--the LP version was 7:08 while the single version was 3:47). Since many listeners will recognize both versions, it's not a big deal that about half the songs are presented in their single-release version. [I do, however, have a complaint with the version of "Maggie May" that was used. The LP version was 5:45 and the radio edit was 5:11. The version here is futher truncated to 3:41!]

The 20-page booklet is serviceable, but hardly essential. There are a handful of pictures, track listing (with release dates and highest chart position) and a 6-page essay by Mike Ragogna.[The essay does clarify that in Springsteen's lyrics to "Blinded by the light," he in fact wrote "...revved up like a deuce..."--NOT a feminine hygiene product. So could we all start singing the right words?!!]

If you're looking for a fun trip down memory lane, it's hard to beat '70s GOLD. [Running Time: Disc 1 - 78:34, Disc 2 - 77:29] VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

i came of age to this music. good times and bad times, war and peace.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to sing with!!.......2006-08-10

These ageless classics are Great. This mix of songs really gets you back to the 60's, crusin' main street, school days, sock hops after the football game, and teenage love. Wow! Great times and Great music!!!!

5 out of 5 stars '60s: Gold Various Artists.......2006-08-03

This series Gold, put out by Universal Music Co. is usually of top quality. Culling from the vast Universal Catalog, the '60s, has an excellent selection of well known standards as well as several "hard to find " chestnuts. The sound quality is very good and 40 songs, make this a thrifty purchase for the asking price.

4 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...'60s GOLD Will Satisfy That Nostalgia Craving.......2006-07-18

'60s GOLD is the latest release in Hip-O Records' "Gold" series. As usual they do a fine job in remastering and song selection--and amazon.com's discounted price makes this a real bargain! I have purchased several previous "Gold" series releases (SOUTHERN ROCK, '70s, BLUES, among others) and have always been pleased, and this is no exception.

However, here are a few points to consider:

*Most of these tracks are from the mid-Sixties. Twenty-six of the tracks were released from 1964 to 1967--eleven from 1967 alone! [Note: All tracks are presented chronologically.]

*There is a heavy emphasis on Motown hits. [Five of which are duplicated from MOTOWN GOLD.] My only concern is why was it necessary to include three(!) Supremes songs?

*The British Invasion is represented by only three artists--The Mindbenders, The Troggs and Procol Harum. The heavy hitters (Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Who, et. al.) are missing. Also, two of America's biggest bands--The Beach Boys and The Doors--are also MIA.

*Finally, with each disk under sixty minutes, it would have been easy to add another ten to twelve tracks and perhaps rectify some of the above concerns.

But if you're looking for a collection of songs guaranteed to satisfy your Sixties nostalgia craving, there are few releases that will provide that fix better than '60s GOLD. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-02-07

If you enjoy Three Dog Night, this is the album for you. I have played this CD way too much since I purchased it. The songs are still as fresh as they were 30 years ago and the sound quality is wonderful. Highly recommend if you are a fan.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits for the Greatest Price.......2002-10-01

I will take this from the GREATEST HITS perspective. We have the Millenium Collection, a few multi-disk anthologies, GOLDEN BISQUITS, and this import. This is by far the best deal for those who just want the hits, and not all the album tracks, (and there are quite a few good ones).

All of the singles are here, from the biggest (Joy To The World) to personal favorites like "Out In The Country". It would be redundant to go track by track, since like Creedence Clearwater in the same time frame, they were Single Machines who also put out great albums as well.

If you want just the best for a good price, this is it. If you want a completist collection, go for the multi disk anthology.

You can't go wrong with the music, for one of the best Vocal Bands of the era, with the tightest backup band since Booker T's MG's.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Collection.......2001-01-16

A very comprehensive collection of their late 60s/early 70s hits. When they were good, they were brilliant, as demonstrated in the exuberant Joy To The World, the moody, atmospheric Mama Told Me Not To Come (a description of a weird party), and the reggae rhythms of Black & White (first done by Greyhound), Show Must Go On (a Leo Sayer song) and Family Of Man. But their slower soft rock ballads like Old Fashioned Love Song, Never Been To Spain etc. never appealed to me although they were big hits. This band is hard to classify, they strode the rock/pop divide with great aplomb, perhaps like Paul Revere & The Raiders.

5 out of 5 stars Good by modern standards, too.......2000-06-13

Some people review CDs like this from a historical perspective. That's fine, but I prefer to pretend it was just released, and examine its musical value. There's a lot of good stuff, 20 whole tracks, of which three are outstanding: Joy to the World, Old Fashioned Love Song, and Black and White. I remember Joy from my college days. "Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea" would amuse my chess-playing friends every time it came on the radio, as "fish" is a derogatory term for a weak chess player. We were all fish. And we can all enjoy the same music today, whatever the context.

Looking for the commercial versions of the songs you loved most from the tribal rock opera, HAIR? This CD is the one you are looking for! The only other one you will need is the Best of the 5th Dimension. (Why "Aquarius" got left off this AM Gold CD is beyond me....)

5 out of 5 stars 1969 - The Greatest Year In Popular Music?.......2006-06-20

If compilations were an accurate measure of the greatness of a particular year in popular this Time-Life disc would make an excellent argument that 1969 may have been the greatest year in American popular music in the 20th century. Complilations will always be lacking for one reason or another. For example, on this discs there are no British bands represented. Neither are the West Coast superstars (Doors, Hendrix, CSN, Airplane...the list goes on). But even with the omission of those giants this is a great compilation. It is strongly evocative of the late 60's, Good Morning Starshine and Hair (from the musical of the same name), the songwriting talent of Laura Nyro (Wedding Bell Blues), some solid Motown (Someday We'll Be Together & What Does It Take), Canadian pop (the Guess Who & Jessie Colin Young), Midwest Psychedelic (Crimison & Clover)and more. If you were really a kid listening to AM radio you will know and appreciate each of these songs. And that's why '69 was such a great year for music, even the left-overs qualify as classic rock-pop.

5 out of 5 stars The 60's rock.......2006-06-08

I love 60's and 70's music the best of everything. I grew up with it because my folks are older than most parents.1969 is a great year of music with smile a little smile for me as my favroite song. I don't like the music the kids like to today it is awful. Rap no way. Heavy Metal yuck. It is time for the oldies to be the only thing on the radio agian.

4 out of 5 stars Great Compilation! But..................2006-05-31

This is one of the best compilations of the Jackson 5 you will find on the market at this time. The remastering job of these 30 plus year old tracks is astounding! However of all these hits there are two main top charters that were left out. Got To Be There and Where You Are. Big mistake. These two tracks should have been added or they should have replaced two of the less popular ones. Great buy for old school Jackson 5 fans.

5 out of 5 stars No superlative good enough for this found in my thesaurus.......2006-03-16

Below you will find a lengthy analysis of the opening song on this record "I want you back." If a single song can generate this kind of response, imagine the musical content of the entire 21 song record.

This song obliterates me. All the performances are incredible, including, to quote a friend, Michael's astounding, dumbfounding lead vocal.

The bass part sounds to me as if it came straight from the composer and arranger, but in any matter it's stuffed full with inventive ideas and super fonky! Given the calculated nature of this recording I would expect the arranger to have worked out the bass part note for note. The recording is a careful tapestry of many sounds that blend together to give the overall effect. The intro is a good example. The melody played by the bass is wonderful, but that melody is doubled by other instruments plus other things are woven around that melody, all indicating that the arranger wrote it all out note for note, the bass player serving to faithfully play the arrangement.

(Un)fortunately, any excellence in other portions of this song is obscured by Michael's unbelievable vocal. So much stuff, so much soul, so much range and flexibility. This vocal is way in the unbelievable range for any artist. But to come from a brand new 11 year old is, as my friend put it so well, "dumbfounding." (Look at other Jackson 5 records here on Amazon to hear the mentioned snippets.)
*He sounds a little hoarse and that increases the authority.
*The way he uses subtle, rhythmic vibrato on the word "me" in the phrase "won't you please let me back in your heart." (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
*The pause and surprise attack on the word "back" in the same phrase. (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
*The screaming with 100% authority.
*The drifting out of tune on the words "now, baby, yeah" in the phrase "Yes I do now, Oh oh baby, yeah yeah yeah yeah, Nah Nah no no." (Is there a technical term for this "drifting out of tune" vocal technique?) (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
*The authority and inventiveness and soul of the scatting on that same phrase and other scats in the song, including the various fun "Huh"s.
*The natural way he does the call and response sections with his brothers.
*The perfect timing all over the place, including jumping on some of the responses a little early.
*The exciting vocal build on the phrase "All I want, all I need, all I want, all I need!" with the fantastic atonal exclamation on the second "all I want."
And on and on. You could almost analyze every single note the guy sings. The fact that this guy could do this at 11 years old shows beyond any question that singing at this level requires talent given to you directly by God. You can't get it and you can't learn it. God either gave it to you or He didn't. My guess is that some genius worked out most of this stuff and recorded a track for Michael to sing along with during the session. I mean God given talent or not, Michael could not have come up with that stuff on his own, atonal, drifting out of tune, etc. But to even sing along and get these results....incredible. Plus, who was that singing genius that came up with all that stuff?

Other great parts of the song are the pervasive background vocals, the excellent call and response, the subtle, almost inaudible use of strings and background vocalizing, and the various guitar parts that weave an interesting tapestry.

One thing that I think is ground breaking but at the same time takes away from this arrangement is the calculated, restrained drum part. The drum part sounds completely canned, written out and played note for note. It's not exuberant; instead it's carefully restrained. To my ears it sounds too mellow for this joyous, raucous romp. But it's groundbreaking because this style of drumming became prevalent later and today in the 2000s you rarely hear any drum pyrotechnics in favor of a steady drum beat that does not break the flow of the song.

I wonder if all the vocals on this recording are Jacksons? I assume they are and that shows the talent of this family and the quality of this product.

Excellence and analysis of each individual part aside, the real value of this song, besides Michael's vocal which you simply can not retire to the background, is the overall sound. Each part is carefully calculated and blended to create a unique, exuberant, joyful, new, and instantly recognizable sound that's unlike anything that had been heard before. Though each part is worthy of study, perhaps the best way to listen to this song is with a 6 inch speaker through an AM radio in your car. And isn't that the way it was meant to be?

5 out of 5 stars GREAT COVERAGE OF THE EARLY WORK.......2005-07-30

This is the definitive collection for those who want the Jackson 5 work without getting all the early albums. My faves are from toward the end of that period, with songs from the Dancing Machine album.

"Dancing Machine" was huge in its day. The original full-length version first appeared as a cut on the Get It Together album. The song was so big it was remixed into a single 45 version, and that single version became the title track for the next album.

(On this collection you get the original full LP version from Get It Together. And it is good to have. Especially if you are not buying the individual early albums. If you want the single version of "Dancing Machine", it can be found on a number of 70's compilations. I have it on an import entitled, The Very Best Of The Jacksons, a worthwhile collection for the later work of the group.)

The next single from Dancing Machine was the masterpiece "I Am Love" and I'm thrilled they included the full version, as well as the album's follow-up, "Whatever You Got I Want", plus the infectious "Life Of The Party". You can also appreciate how The J5 evolved into the Jacksons by listening to this body of work.

All in all it is the best collection of the early J5 music.

5 out of 5 stars It's the SAME OLD SONGS - With a Different Package............2005-04-25

I agree with the other reviewers - these are the same songs from previous releases - JUST DRESSED UP WITH A DIFFERENT COLORED PACKAGE - way to go, Motown!

3 out of 5 stars It's the Jacksons.......2005-04-07

All this is is just the same music with a different title. I have every J5 greatest hits and all of the songs from those albums are on this album. But I have to give it at least three stars because they are the Jacksons, and being that I am a die hard fan its only right.

    .
Of over 600 songs, Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore realized over three-quarters: these are those. Gerald Moore was of course as important to this project as Fischer-Dieskau.

    DGG's sound is excellent.

This set is a remarkable document of art.
