5 out of 5 stars Hellraiser and other assorted treats. .......2004-10-21

This is the second "Unnatural History" compiliation from Coil, and in my opinion the better of the two. If only the corporate Schmucks who produced the Hellraiser series (theyre still great movies btw) let Barker do what he pleased (there are differing accounts of whether or not it was Barker who didnt want them on the soundtrack) and have this great group get their compositions on the sound track. Coil would have been seen as the next "Goblin" probably if that were the case (Goblin being Dario Argento's soundtrack group of choice and a classic band in their own right).

5 out of 5 stars The best Unnatural History album.......2000-08-07

This is a good album, it includes all of the hellraiser originals, and some other good tracks like theme from blue 1 and 2.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful, Sinister but enchanting........1999-02-07

This release has a subtitle that explains it perfectly, "Smiling in the Face of Perversity". Tracks 1 through 5, track 15 and the secret track following 15 are delightfully eerie, and have the tendancy to encompass your entire being. Tracks 6 through 14 are the original versions of the Hellraiser Themes, not used because director Clive Barker felt that people would concentrate too much on the music, and not enough on the movie. Definately music for the horror movie that is going on inside your head. Excellent release to the Coil newcomer and the seasoned Coil listener alike.

4 out of 5 stars Coil's best.......2006-08-06

This will serve as an excellent introduction to Coil. unfortunately afterwards also most their albums will seem unsatisfying since Coil love sometimes to take their experiments a bit far. However this collection really does not bore and presents soem of thier more ineteresting stuff. Not as extreme as some think. Quite ebautiful in parts.

5 out of 5 stars How to Destroy Angels .......2004-10-21

While this serves as a good "odds and ends" compilation of Coil, or a decent introduction to them, I will say that the track "How to Destroy Angels" is one of the most disturbing tracks I have ever heard. Nightmarish samples disorient the listener into a netherworld of the bizzare and morbid. Any Coil is recommended by yours truly, if only they would rerelease these Stateside to avoid the terrible import prices.

4 out of 5 stars industrial soundscapes.......2002-08-16

The album's good, a mix of early Coil work, but hard to listen to in one sitting since the album as a compilation has no continuity. Though great stuff, I'd recommend buying a real album such as one of the Musics to Play in the Dark or Horse Rotorvator (which has a similar sound to this stuff).

My main reason for writing this review, however, is to make clear than Unnatural History IS NOT Horse Rotorvator with different song titles. I don't know where the previous reviewer heard this, but it's not true.

4 out of 5 stars First Coil CD..........2000-09-14

This is my first plunge into the musical world of Coil, and I have to say I'm surprisingly pleased. If you're into 'experimental electronics' at all, Coil is one project to take a look at.

4 out of 5 stars A decent compilation.......2000-08-07

It is an alright album, there aren't really any tracks that stand out besides Dream Photography.

3 out of 5 stars Good for a few tracks, not so great overall........2005-09-01

This album has a few really standout tracks, the most memorable and fascinating being the small compilation of music the band has done for commercials over the years. This, and the atmosphereic and ambient tracks First Dark Ride, Baby Food, and Lost Rivers of London, make it a worthy purchase, but much of the rest is kind of forgettable.

4 out of 5 stars A nice dark album.......2000-08-07

This album is second best in the Unnatural History series, my favorite tracks are First Dark Ride, and Lost Rivers Of London.

4 out of 5 stars For Completists.......2000-07-27

Since hearing Coil on the "Terra Serpente" compilation in late 1998e.v., I have been a huge fan of Coil's music, collecting several of their CDs.

"Unnatural History III" isn't one of their best: in fact it isn't even close. For that, I would recommend "Windowpane & The Snow" and "Love's Secret Domain". UHIII's shortcoming is that of most - if not all - compilation albums: lack of cohesion. In other words, the pieces on offer here sounded disjointed when played one after the other. However, it should be remembered that the point of this album (alongside UHI - II) was to release Coil's music found on EPs, other comps, outtakes, rehearsal tapes, etc.

Now having said that, there is much to praise about this album. I ordered this CD from my local record store for track 10 "Lost Rivers of London" which would have to be one of the darkest, and most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. It brilliant captures that 'mystical London' of an Arthur Machen story, or of dark rumours about Jack the Ripper, underground occult groups, etc. I first heard an excerpt on Coil's website (http:/brainwashed.com/coil) in early 1999e.v., and the piece has haunted me ever since.

The CD also has excellent photos of Balance and Christopherson, and some interesting artwork.

Most of the CD is reminscent of "Scatology" and "How to Destroy Angels" - i.e. harsh, discordant, 'stream-of-consciousness' music, rather than Coil's later, stylised, music.

There is the unfortunate inclusion of "Music For Commercials" - 10 mins of bland, uninteresting music. Unless this is an example of Coil's notorious black humour, or to show that Coil can indeed produce banal, tedious music, this is a pointless inclusion. I can appreciate that, by necessity, advertising music must be bland and 'catchy', but why include it? That aside, I would recommend this release for those who have purchased the bulk of Coil's 'proper' releases (LSD, Horse Rotorvator, Scatology, etc.), enjoy their music, and wish to hear their lesser know music. For those who have done so, you won't be disappointed.

Standout tracks: "Meaning What Exactly?", "Scope", "Lost Rivers of London"

5 out of 5 stars A nice collection........2000-03-14

A great collection of tracks, from the song that feels like a journey, "first dark ride" to one of my favorite brain numbing tracks "baby food". I also enjoyed the track "Wrong Eye". There is also the extended intended introduction of "things Happen" from Love's Secret Domain. A good example of the escapist and beat orientated music Coil has to offer. All in all a great CD, but I still like UNNH II the best for scaring the light out of you.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Evil- A Masterpiece.......2000-01-12

If you collect Coil, or enjoy Dark soundscapes, this is a must-have for your collection
